@@Stickweasel91 So I'm actually thinking of doing a series on Villains. Not sure if you've watched the Captain's Orders video which is imo better than this by leaps and bounds. But in that one I go into a little more depth on evil within society.
This comment and me following my own nose has me thinking about doing a Killmonger vs. Joker video that ends similarly to the Captain's orders video. But with a different issue of course.

To be fair, Peter was willing to kill Gamora and Wanda was willing to kill Vision for the greater good as well, but only because Gamora and Vision begged for it. That's the difference; no one asked Thanos to do what he does. I suppose that does make him evil, even if he's only doing what he considers to be necessary. Very good essay!

one thing most poeple don't seem to cinsider in wherther thanos is evil or not is why he does it... most poeple go in to it wih th assumption that the universe would be fine withuht thonas or his plan because they simply see him as an antoganist... but don't forget, he does it to save the universe... and even for their nation, a lot of people are willing to kill, which is why volunteer armies like the us armies haven't run out of soldiers! yet people just dismiss thonas killing one person to save the universe as evil!

    • @SSDsmiley

I think another thing is the timing, Wanda only had the will to kill Vision when Thanos was on the door steps of victory. And Peter only had the will to do it when Thanos had Gamora in his hands; which is actually a slight against Gamora if she really wanted to stop Thanos in his tracks she would have killed herself earlier.

      SPOILERS for ENDGAME!!!
While I do agree with you on those points, I think this was setting up a contrast of self-sacrifice vs sacrificing others. In Infinity war, we see that every sacrifice of others leads to failure/defeat of the Avengers, but the ultimate final mic drop was of the self-sacrifice of tony stark.

    • @SunScourge
      @SunScourge 5 років тому +3

@@SSDsmiley True, for them there truly was no other way, which makes killing a loved one more understandable. Thanos was very convinced that there was no other way to save the universe, but that makes him the Mad (and shortsighted) Titan. (in this, I find it interesting to contrast him to Tony's pursuits of clean energy via arc reactor tech, tackling the resource problem in a very different way!)

Not that I’m defending Thanos or anything, he’s clearly in the wrong, but I think this is why he deserved to win, and why he DID win. Obviously everyone’s gathered by now that you can view the movie as Thanos as the protagonist. If you do, this scene is him making the hardest choice ever to reach his end goal and accomplish what he thinks is the “greater good.” That’s why he wins.
Just an amazing villain, best one I’ve seen in a movie in years.

    • @TheSchaef47
      @TheSchaef47 5 років тому +18

This is why the prequels are way better if you view Palpatine as the protagonist that ties all the movies together. He's the only one with clear, delineated goals (take over the Senate, create a military force under his control, undermine and dismantle the Jedi), who conceives a master plan to achieve them, and by the climax of each of the movies, accomplishes all of them.
Not *good* mind you, but better...

Bartholomew Thundercat III the “greater good” is pretty dubious for Thanos. His plan ignores even the most basic questions of ecology, and he’s more than willing to kill everyone else.
That he kills his daughter is irrelevant - his abusive disregard for his children is well documented, he just worships his own “destiny.”
Thanos isn’t a great villain, he’s just an overpowered self-centered jerk with delusions of destiny.

Honestly, is someone could explain why Thanos is so great with solid explanations, I’d like to hear it. All I see with him is claims that he’s complex without any actual justification. The “greater good” defined as little more than a desire to be an hero, the Obviously Evil goon squad, the gratuitous kick the dog moments of cruelty, the self-satisfied smugness... this is just commercial off the shelf villain, nothing special.

This scene cememted Thanos to me as not only the best MCU villain but one of the best characters in the MCU. One of the most layered, complex, and deep characters period. I didn't expect the movie to show so much emotion out of a villain I was close to tears when that scene came up I felt for the villain of the movie that shows how great of a villain they created and a testatement to Josh Brolin phenomenal performance (seriously he makes you feel for him, he can make you feel uneasy, sad, or even terrified and yet I completely understood where he's coming from) and the amazing writing by Christopher Markus and Stephen Mcfeely who unfortunately many of the times get overlooked. I love how you presented what Thanos did as violating the moral of the MCU; really emphasized Thanos as the ultimate villain of the MCU.

Pretty low bar tbh. I mean, Loki is considered a "good" villain in the MCU.
Snakr aside, no, I don't see "layers" there. Thanos is on a cosmic ego trip to push his deranged vision onto the universe and just because he spouses the tired man-feels cliche (which Brolin delivers perfectly, don't get me wrong), people think there is more than a twisted abuser there? He literally threw Gomorra off a cliff less than 10 minutes after he tortured her mutilated sister in front of her. And just because he sheds a few tears, he is layered?
Everything he does, he does for one reason: To satisfy his ego. To have a universe "grateful" for his rampage.

It also helps show that Thanos truly is "Mad". He's so broken by his grief over what happened to his world, so *convinced* he could've saved them, that even compared to the one thing in his life he thinks he did "right"(doesn't seem too bothered by her betrayal, just oddly proud of how strong she is in her convictions and such) he's willing to literally throw that thing one right thing away.
He's The Mad Titan, and his Madness is linked to his belief in *doing what he thinks is right* no matter the cost.

    • @SSDsmiley

Crying only shows he is in pain. Not that he thinks it is wrong. He's losing something he cares about-- it hurts him. It's not about Gamora dying-- it's all about Thanos. I'd cry over losing a dog too. People decide to have their dogs put to sleep every day. They cry.
It's a blended mixture of concern for the pet's quality of life but *also* about money. Most people just can't afford to spend $10,000 to heal your sick pet. So you choose between it living or dying. You could *technically* afford it. But it would be break normal people financially.

He would rather do what HE wants instead of what is objectively better; consequences, family, the UNIVERSE be damned. Shhh. No spoliers before the 2 week mark. (common courtesy) He is canonically more himself than he's ever been on screen. Because before it was just a mission. His warped sense of honor kept him from killing unneccessarily. In Endgame, he's livid.

      Spoilers
Infinity war thanos had made his decision. He had thought out what he was going to do already. Endgame thanos however was from the past and had seen the future and his death. This led him to change his character and decision. His original goal with the infinity stones was to carry on life by wiping out half of it so the other half could live easier. Since endgame thanos had seen the future and his death, not accepting fate, he decided that the only way to carry on life was to make new life since the other half of life he killed could not accept what happened. This led to endgame thanos being more murderous and evil like how a classic villain would be portrayed while infinity war thanos was more portrayed as a villain with kind of good intents behind his actions. Endgame thanos even admits to enjoying the massacre of life he is about to commit while infinity war thanos’ only intent is to help and is only forced to kill when necessary. This explains why the only avenger he attempted to kill was iron man because he was the only one he viewed as a threat.

I think that this also puts further reason into the amount of anger he has in Endgame. (These aren't really spoilers for it tho.) He sees that he sacrifices possibly the only person he's ever had a chance to love.
    Now for spoilers.
He also sees that Thor beheads him...and he says...that's my destiny....and is proud of it...HE'S PROUD OF THAT!
He's happy even though he sees himself get killed because he's accomplished his goal. He's content. Until he sees that no one else is content...so he wants to start the whole universe over. In his mind, he gave up everything, his planet, his children, his daughter, and his own life but beyond all of that he feels that it's all because it's his destiny. And now to see that no one is grateful to him, he'll erase everyone and make one that is. He doesn't want to see the entire universe turn into Titan. He wants it to flourish, in his own way.
Both Thanos and Thor believe in Destiny. When they find out that their belief is flawed they sit down, sulk, and give up. Thor although still sulking has moved on.
Thanos, even if he was still alive, did not. Tbh, I felt a tad bit sad for him when he flaked away. I mean, I was clapping my ass off but seeing how sad he was just made me feel a tiny bit bad for him.

    • @markcobuzzi826
      @markcobuzzi826 4 роки тому

Another difference between Spock‘s scene in Wrath of Khan versus Thanos’ plan in Infinity War is that Spock was not planing to save anyone by just killing himself. Spock saved his crew by repairing the radioactive core, while his death came as an undesired byproduct of the room holding it being hazardous. Likewise, Vision’s first death was a byproduct of Scarlet Witch finally deciding to destroy the Mind Stone, while it still happened to be attached to Vision.
According to philosophical principles like “Double Effect”, this would make Spock’s death and Vision’s first death ethically different from scenarios like Star Lord trying to shoot Gamora at her request, Thanos killing Gamora against her will, and Thanos wanting to directly kill half the universe’s population. The latter three scenarios treat murder as the desired solution or means to an end, while the former two have an individual’s death occur as a side-effect. However, Gamora and Star Lord’s scenario is a lot more grey, since Gamora is asking for it out of her own free will and sees herself being alive as a weapon Thanos could use to harm others.

    Really good video.
What a personally love the most about this scene is that :
When Thanos kill Gamora, we feel opposite feelings, we hate Thanos cause he kill a character we've been following and liking for 2 movies, BUT at the same time we feel empathy with Thanos, because for a moment, we share the same feeling, sadness, we see him cry, being crushed by his sadness, seeing him loose the only person he ever loved. Just like us, Thanos is feeling extremly sad, for the same reason as we do.
I think this is what this movie do the best, making us hate the hero from the beginning but still making us feel sad about HIS lost..

The difference is, the good guys don't do this out of the arrogant conviction that they are right, as Thanos did. They do it out of absolute necessity, when they can see literally no other choice, and their own life, and ideals, and integrity, are always part of the sacrifice.

Evil. Yes. Loki calls him out in the beginning of Infinity War that Thanos could never be a god. In Endgame, Thanos decides to use the stones to destroy the universe and rebuild it in his image. Bottom line: all his pontificating about doing the best thing for the universe is an excuse to feed his ego. The universe did not matter, only Thanos matters. That is what makes his "sacrifice" of his daughter is self serving compared to Natasha giving her life in Endgame to undo the horror his original snap inflicted on the universe. Natasha was the embodiment of self sacrifice; not only for the whole, but for her friend Clint and his family. It diminishes Thanos. A and when he is dusted by Tony's snap( another moment of self sacrifice) it is fitting because he is a hollow creature. Good video.

@ 3:27 This is the truth our world needs to see. I believe to often our world and our American society has taught that true strength comes from independence or true strength comes from the collective. When in reality true strength comes from self sacrifice. True heroism is not just beating up the bad guy, but putting everyone else before you and your needs for their betterment. If you are willing to sacrifice yourself in place of others then you are a strong hero, our world and our society needs to remember that.
    *Spoiler for Endgame*
As this video explains, Thanos was willing to sacrifice anything to accomplish what he believed would be for the collective good, but in doing so he was never willing to sacrifice himself. By comparing the Soul stone sacrifice scenes in Infinity War and Endgame we can see the stark difference between a villain and a hero, a weak man and a strong hero(s). The same proposition is made in both movies, one must sacrifice that which they love, also put as, a Soul for a Soul. Thanos does not hesitate to sacrifice his daughter for the collective good, while Natasha and Clint argue and fight one another to sacrifice themselves for the collective good. Natasha nor Clint could be reasoned with, they both knew the right thing was for themselves to die and not the other. This is heroism, this is true strength, this is what makes a strong man/woman. Somehow these Marvel movies are teaching better how we should live then any self help book out there (that's probably an exaggeration but I am going with it).

Nice video. Though I usually cringe when a term like "evil" is used since that eliminates the complexity of the person. Thanos isn't evil. He (in our sensibilities) is sadly misguided and a zealot. Thus he does (in our opinion) do evil things. Saying he's evil is a cheap out. To steal from Obie Wan ... many of the truths we hold dear depend on our point of view. It was super well spelled out what Thanos' point of view was.

    • @ThatMakesSenseToMe
      @ThatMakesSenseToMe  5 років тому

      Hey Ron.
I get that. I know people who work in the prison system and there are many cases where the world wants to say "evil" when the crime came from either poverty of mental illness. So I don't just get the temptation, I agree with you.
In my opinion though... as these are postmodern times... It is a good exercise to find the complexity in a person before judging them, but taken too far... we waste our time not judging people when we ought to be finding solutions to the problems the "complicated" people made.
Tragic example...school shooters. Sure. They have complicated lives that drive them to murder. But how much of our time should we spend defending them vs. spending time figuring out how to stop more of them from appearing.
It's a delicate balance. Not binary. But worth considering that some things aren't nuanced. Genocide isn't nuanced. Who cares what Thanos thinks. Stop him from committing mass genocide.
Some logic with Nazis in my other video: ua-cam.com/video/9Ijm-LX8HG8/v-deo.html

While this video was cut short, it does in its scarcity brilliantly say why Thanos is the villain. Many can side with Thanos because that is their opinion (in which they don't see him as evil), but at least by Marvel's metric where you don't sacrifice others - at least not without them asking for it with good reason - *Thanos is evil* .

Doctor Strange saw all the possible conclusions and in only one does the universe end up saved: the one where Tony dies.
And he chooses it. He trades lives.
That gives Thanos' actions some weight. Ultimately, if sacrificing your friends is the ultimate evil of the marvel universe, don't Endgame and Infinity War end on the message that morality is more complicated than that. It's too simplistic to say you would never sacrifice a loved one to the greater good, even if the heroes fight that idea tooth and nail, they all end up comong to terms with the fact that they must do just that.

Hey, thanks for watching. And thanks for the comment.
I think there is an important moral difference in that the commanders are ordering troops who have already consented to the risk of death. That is morally important. Like Quill and Wanda try to kill Vision and Gamora.
They have volunteered to die. So it's morally different.
But this essay isn't meant to advocate for the morality of the marvel universe, merely show a version of it.

I mean... _That makes sense to me._ Then again, I've never fought a war. A rare disease runs in my blood (Loeys-Dietz) and "it" killed. In my reality, death is a consequence, and not a choice. Combat is alien, as is a community born of violence... I'm no soldier. Death is no alien, and it's impact is as real (and familiar) as anything.
In a sense, I feel like a lot of us are blinded by a cushion of non-violence. In other words, these stories are born of violence. They almost revel in violence. The focus is on the consequence of violence. The most impactful consequence of violence is death. Death born from violence is usually murder, no? *Murder...* How many of us can even come close to relating?
I guess I'm trying to say "I think that makes him evil." is a little too much from my point of view. Thanos is a villain in my eyes. Thanos is evil in my eyes. I'm rambling, and am strongly considering deleting this post. I may do so, but for now I'll still say it "out loud." Murder and violence... Our super hero stories revolve around murder and violence. Make of that what you will.

I want to add to your point on how Thanos violates the moral core of the MCU.I think you can even say he stands on the opposite end of the spectrum of everything (including the morals) of the Avengers. The greatest villain is always the opposite of the hero (or in this case, heroes), as they say. Thanos is the embodiment of the "anti-Avengers." One on one Thanos is able to match up against every strong attribute of the Avengers. You name it... Hulk's strength, Tony's intellect, Cap's will. I'm sure if you analyze it enough you can come up with more. It was only when ALL the Avengers had come together were they even able to stand a chance against him.

Wouldn’t have letting Gamora kill herself pretty much be sacrificing her, clearly Thanos knew she was about to and stopped it, meaning if he had just let her kill herself in a way he would have sacrificed her by letting her do that. Which makes denying her sacrifice (even if it would have been in vain) even more twisted. Of course this is all speculation and, Spoilers for Endgame beyond this point,
the whole sacrifice thing is made even more confusing in Endgame.

I disagree. Killing Gamora does not make him evil. He did it for the sake of every civilization. In his eyes he is saving everyone and I think you can make the case that he did. Especially because we now know about celestials and how they are born. Thanos is wrong for his execution. If he had done what he did differently, he would be THE hero of the entire universe. And because his goal was to save EVERYONE, killing some guys who oppose him isn't that bad. He doesn't enjoy killing, he even expresses how he lost everything after accomplishing his mission. I even think the movies kind of agree with me. Thanos won by giving it his all, sacrificing his own daughter, crippling himself and letting go of the power he held, because he won. The avengers lost because they weren't willing to do what it takes to win. But in Endgame they do win precisely because Tony realizes this. He gives it his all, willing to do what Thanos did 5 years prior by giving his all to win.
I understand I may have read between the lines and have a biased view on certain scenes while not mentioning others, however, I truly believe that Thanos is not a bad person. What he believes in is good. He is just biased in believing that violence is necessary. And no, I don't mean doubling the world's resources, that is an idiotic idea... That literally would lead to more overconsumption and because of exponential growth would also lead to barely visible results on the long term. Help. That is what Thanos should have given. And education. Those are the virtues that Thanos is missing. But killing Gamora was not an evil act.

I think the Russos and Fiege show the evil in being too willing to sacrifice others. Thanos has this cold blooded logic he relies on but it's easy to poke holes in his 1/2 population scheme. Meanwhile the heroes will painfully make sacrifices showing the inherent value in every life.

Well both Wanda and Starlord made that same play so what do you think of them? (Yes I get that their play is undone but the attempt is still there with both of them)

Another person by the name of SunScourge already said this, Gamora and Vision asked for Starlord and Wanda to do what they tried to do. No one asked Thanos to do that, and that’s what makes him evil, even if he thinks he is helping.

I think theres a difference because both Vision and Gamora asked/begged to be killed, compared to when Thanos killed Gamora without her consent

Strange that you cut your analysis so short, because I feel like you missed a crucial point here. What got me about Infinity War, is that the difference between the heroes and the villains boiled down to consent. Vision asked Wanda to kill him, making it okay for her to make that choice. Gamora was not on board with Thanos' plan. Thanos' problem isn't that he's willing to sacrifice his daughter, it's that he won't effing listen to her. Like somehow even though he's really smart it has never occurred to him that if you're *the only person in the entire universe* who thinks something is right, then you're probably wrong. Other people's opinions and preferences do matter, and should matter to you. You should question your beliefs when confronted by the stories that other people tell of their experiences. Thanos refuses to do that, imo that's why he's evil.

Not every MCU movies do that collective good vs individual right thing, not every. That's one exception.
The most OP Captain Marvel, what she did is never because of collective good or individual right but just because she can do whatever she want as a lady mary sue.

In my opinion Sharon wasn't given anything to do so she's a wasted character in my eyes. In the MCU Cap should have given that speech to maybe Ironman when he challenged Cap's morals regarding the Accords.
