- Johnny Olsen is away this week. Stepping in to announce this week is Bern Bennett.
*Note: This is the only week of Match Game that Johnny Olsen is absent from. He is very much missed!

It sounds so strange without Johnny announcing.
Thank you for all the time you have spent past and present for uploading all of these episodes (and some other shows too) here! Love and appreciate it!!
I didn't give a rats' fanny who was announcing
@@joeambrose3260 get over yourself
@@storylass9071 WTF ? I'm entitled to my opinion, as are you
Johnny didn't announce the end of the last episode either. Maybe he was on vacation.
H/H match update:
...
Here we go with week 120 of our favorite classic game show (these episodes were taped on Halloween 1975 and originally aired in late November and early December of that year), and once again our stalwart regulars Charles, Richard, and Brett are joined by semi-regular Fannie in the sixth seat. (This is now her third "double.")
And, once again, we have two "one-and-done" celebs in the same week: Joe Silver takes the #1 position and Esther Rolle is assigned the #4 seat. With two "new kids on the block" and a different announcer's voice (Bern Bennett is filling in for the beloved Johnny Olson this week only), Match Game just seems a bit... unfamiliar out of the gate today.
Anyone who's been watching these episodes in sequence knows that Richard has been on quite the hot streak with the head-to-head match. In fact, looking back at the past six weeks, Richard has been chosen for *every single H/H except for three.* But to be fair, Richard has also been matching more frequently than his prior average, bringing his score up to 40% and change. (He comes into the week at 40.1% compared to the 36-38% range he'd been at for many months before.)
Anyway, it's time to sit back, enjoy, and see which celebs get a shot at the head-to-head match this week!
(Personally, I'd love to see Fannie have another go at it!)
Today's action: For the third day running, we start right off with the H/H match. (To recap: yesterday a new champion was crowned and for the super match suggestions he picked Fannie, Richard, and Charles for audience match suggestions. Taking Fannie's answer, he won $250 just as time ran out.)
And no drama or excitement today as our new champion chooses... well, you know...
Today's question: "________ Heat"
I think this is one of the more classic, somewhat harder H/H matches (which is fine, since there's been a couple of "gimmes" lately).
I had to put the video on pause to give myself time to think. All I can come up with is "Dry Heat" but that doesn't sound too promising. (People always say "But at least it's a dry heat!") Hopefully our contestant does better.
Richard scratched his head but didn't take too long before writing his response. The contestant didn't look terribly happy with the question. When called on, he scratched his head and seemed resigned to the fact that he wasn't going to win with "summer heat." The audience shared a collective groan at his answer.
I don't know. I suppose it's possible Richard might have written that. I've seen more improbable matches than that come to fruition...
...Richard mentioned "dead heat" which sounded pretty good (why didn't I think of that!), but he wrote "steam heat" which sounds absolutely lousy to me.
No match this time, but wait...
...After an unusually speedy game, our champion makes his second trip to Super Match land. (This is first time since episode 582 that two H/H matches got squeezed into a single day!) This time he calls on Richard, Fannie, and Charles, and goes with Richard's suggestion for a $500 win.
And still no drama or excitement as our new champion chooses... well, you know...
Today's second question: "Fourth ______"
My first thought was fourth wall (which is sometimes broken in movies and TV shows), but I quickly decided to go with Fourth of July. I think there was a movie "The Fourth Man" from roughly that time period. (I looked it up afterwards, it was released in 1983.)
Richard wrote without hesitation. The contestant exuded confidence as he said Fourth of July. Moderate audience applause.
I'm thinking this is going to be a lead-pipe cinch...
... and sure enough, Richard scores his 135th H/H match.
Here's the updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy:
Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts).
Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts).
TIE: Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts).
TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts).
Fannie - 52.6% (10 wins in 19 attempts).
Betty - 46.9% (15 wins in 32 attempts).
Charles - 45.2% (19 wins in 42 attempts).
Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts).
Richard - 40.2% (135 wins in 336 attempts).
Brett - 38.0% (19 wins in 50 attempts).
Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts).
*These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 596, excluding the lost/missing episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")
This is Bern Bennett speaking for Match Game 75; a Mark Goodson Bill Todman production
I’m surprised that for the baseball question no one said “brought in a pinch hitter.”
By the way......in MG 75.....episode 597.....Gene apologizes for "forgetting a part of the tradition"....and kisses Esther Rolle....and also explains Johnny O's absence
Thanks John , was wondering what happened. This is my second round watching all of the episodes, there are so many that I forget what happens during the game but I recognize the contestants. I still never forget a Face....Lol... thanks again... 🖖😊
I know Gene was the older generation. He probably wasn't about to display any overt racism, but passive racism had to be a hurdle he was still working on. I'll give him an A for effort due to his age. Anyone younger would have no excuse.
Besides, it might also be about not being as beautiful as most of the celebrities who sat in that spot.
You think he really forgot ?
"Damn, damn, damn!" lol (a line Esther Rolle performed on Good Times after her husband was killed.)
Florida from Good Times
Bern Bennett doesn’t have the magic, energy and charm that Johnny has
You tell 'em Chuck!! Fannie is pretty on the inside too.
Michael Sebastian so glad you are enjoying these episodes. I see you comment a lot. Just wanted to say hi! Thanks for continuing to watch!
@@MatchGameProductions I've been on a binge in 2022.
Damn, Gene got a lot of miles out of that suit.
I said, "Canned Heat." (Goin' up the country, why don't you wanna go?)
or, in 1999, "I've got canned heat in my heels tonight" -- Jamiroquai
He sang the National Anthem!
Fanny has two balls for him...
Esther seems to not want to be there at all.
Very surprised to see episodes of Match Game from the 70s......without Johnny Olson....and am I the only one wondering why Gene Rayburn didn't kiss Esther Rolle?
Let's be fair to Gene. Let's not speculate based on the color of skin. Not fair to him.
Another reason you wouldn't kiss a woman (out of respect) is if she's a mom.
I believe he held her in high regard as an actress. She wasn't a blonde bombshell.
Rolle was a very conservative woman. I suspect she may have refused a kiss.
Stop making up excuses for Gene's conduct....he said back of the bus to numerous black male panelists....
And......as for Bern Bennett....and his fans....he can be heard daily...on the original Beat The Clock....weekdays at 8/7 Central on Buzzr
And the original announcer of #theyoungandtherestless for who he is best known for.
Good to know zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
@@joeambrose3260 amazing, you feel compelled to give negative answers to folks and I feel compelled to slap you stupid fingers. Grow up
@@jackiwheeler6963 back then...the original host of Beat The Clock was Bud Collyer....in the 70s....Jack Narz...and later...Gene Wood....and the last version was hosted by Monty Hall (and Jack Narz was the announcer and associate producer)
I've NEVER seen a MG without Johnny O. It just ain't the same and don't seem right. And Frankly I think it might of thrown Gene off a bit??
I don't give a rats' fanny who's announcing, get over it
@@joeambrose3260 dang Joe, give it a rest
@@storylass9071 isn't the guy entitled to a vacation once in a while ?
It was weird, the first time I watched MG'90 with Gene Wood announcing. He did a great job, although he wasn't necessarily a good match for all of the shows Johnny O did. (He just didn't have the right delivery for Price, for example.)
In an episode of what’s my line from 1974, gene said that he tried to do match game without johnny and couldn’t do it without him. He said he enjoys working with him. I think in this case he is either under the weather, working for other shows, or spending time with his beloved wife Penny in Lewisburg West Virginia during this time.
WOW is this the first time Esther has been on the show
Yes it is. First time for Esther and Joe
This is also one of the episodes to not have Johnny Olsen as announcer.
Malek Masoud that’s what the episode says in the title and description!
Kathy B I think she was on MGPM as well.Correct me if I'm wrong.
I believe each panel did five daily shows and a PM.
When I first saw that episode...I thought....might've had a slight cold....I know when I get one...I take a shot or 2 of NyQuil.....and stay
away from people for a day or 2
I could be wrong, but I think Gene and Richard (until he left) were the only 2 to appear in every episode...granted, I'm only into '75 so guess I'll find out :)
Kim B, that's me until episode 1285 of Mg78. That is correct
@@MatchGameProductions wow.
Bern Bennett subbing for johnny olson
Johnny Olsen out this week

Panelists:
1. Joe Silver
2. Brett Somers
3. Charles Nelson Reilly
4. Esther Rolle
5. Richard Dawson
6. Fannie Flagg
Charles Nelson Reilly almost never waved goodbye to contestants.
You got a Charles fetish?
I have noticed that, too. I wonder why he did not.
@@Trefoile maybe, down deep, he wasn't a nice person. Or maybe he was unhappy.
@@joeambrose3260 that's a really stupid comment.
Almost all of Joe's comments are stupid.
Contestant Charles is hot AF
I would think that after having served in the Army, and his many years of work in radio and TV, Gene would not be so sensitive to whistles and screams.
The only problem with these episodes is, The network time compresssed them and they seem to be on speed! They get 2 minutes more commercials to fit in this way.
Paul I don’t see any speed ups in these episodes recorded from 2015.
The music suddenly speeds up and then slows back down in a couple of places.
Contestant Charlie is a cutie.
I said body heat.
Whoopie !
@@joeambrose3260 take your meds
@@storylass9071 Why so nasty ?
Funny, Gene didn't try to kiss Ester to welcome her.
RedNekLvr22 catch the next episode!
steam heat?
Gene all ways kisses the new stars that come on the match game so why didn't he kiss the lady that stars on good tines?
Yes he did.
“Rubbed dirt on his bat” and “warmed up” were not a match? Tsk, tsk.
OHHH I thought it said BEA BERNADETTE on the last show
I've only read through about a dozen comments, but a few folks here don't like Bern Barnett, I thought he was a great announcer. And Brett says she doesn't know about sports, the dumbest thing Donald COULD do is throw her back
His style, at least here, was much like Johnny's. Pleasant voice, too.
For God's sake...please give Brett a cough drop.....
He's not God "sake"
She was a smoker. She always coughed in the microphone and never covered her mouth.
Has anyone seen the episode Betty is talking about in this video at 2:50?
