The good thing about watching a review/demo with Andy is that everything sounds so amazing. the bad thing is that everything sounds so amazing with Andy and not when you play it.
Just bought a FZ-3 last week and played it a couple hours and was blown away with the fuzz almost all the way up. Bought a second for collection. It’s hard to explain the feel of this pedal but it’s sustain us insane and single notes are awesome! Highly recommended and I’ll say it better than FZ-2.
I like Boss Pedal’s naming conventions over many other pedals because the pedals name tells you what is does. You can’t have better marketing than that.
I own a muff, and my other guitar player owns this one. This one definitely cuts through the mix better than my muff. It's got a really nice sound to it.
i can't believe it ,I own this pedal and I never really it because of the boss cosm .people would tell me they are not real fuzz boxes.WOW after andy 's video i'm sold on I ,it's the best fuzz I've ever heard and I listen to hundreds.
I think out of all the demos I ever heard of guitar players giving demos of guitar pedal, I'd say you are the best at it. Very conniving demos...Most of my pedal selections were based on many of the demonstrations you did...Just thought I let you know dude...I'm 59 and still rockin like I was 15....still playing in good classic rock bands...
The octavia setting has always been an octave up, never below. The trick to getting the octave up ( and this is with the original pedal) is to use your guitar's neck pick and play above the 12th fret. It is not like today's pitch shifters, it is subtle.
keep calling it a bad pedal I got mine on ebay for $60.00 bucks like new and it work just fine. . but keep saying it's crap and may be the Next fz5 will go even cheaper love it! lol
I have this pedal, as well as some other Fuzz pedals, colorsound DAM fuzz sound, a germanium Fuzz Face, MKII Sharpetone tonebender, Colorsound mark IV tonebender and some big Muffs. This pedal is a great pedal it has a nice treble edge which gives the fuzz more clarity so it doesn't sound so muffled. I really like the Oscillating fuzz sound and the Maestro setting. pretty versatile Fuzz box.
Have owned 4 analogue fuzz's over the years... I didn't really get on with any of them. Some sounded positively bad even though they were rather expensive. I thought i'd give this pedal a go as I found one on ebay for a snip, very happy I did. The fuzz face is nice, the maestro setting is very harsh but great for that Lemmy sound if you use it on bass... If you roll down the highs you can just about use it on a guitar. The Octavia setting isn't too obvious, sounds good on bass too. Thought fuzz was not for me, glad to have been proved wrong.
i’m willing to bet money all the corksniffers in the comments complaining about it being a modeled fuzz wouldn’t be able to tel the difference if they had a blindfold on
Sonic Titan corksniffers will be corksniffers. Blindfold them & they can never differentiate Gibson from an Epiphone, Fender from a Squire, Sabian from a Zildjian, Marshall from a Vox and so on and so forth. If it costs more, then it’s better than cheaper ones because they like to get economically ripped off...
I read your comment and agree that the Big Muff is a pretty good pedal as your comment suggests. This is coming from me and certainly doesn't reflect everyone's opinion. I like collecting gear and Boss and MXR products rate high on my list of favourites. "Who in their right mind buys a digital fuzz?", you ask. I haven't yet had the chance to test this Boss Fuzz but I have the feeling that it sounds pretty good. For guys like me, though, I simply like collecting different pedals digital or not.
@@savanaviolenta This pedal is a hot candidate for worst boss pedal of all times and I'm not alone in this. Find out what a Fuzz is, test a real fuzz next to this fz-5 digital abomination then report back.
I’ve never seen anyone demo playing Band Of Gypsys 🤘🏼I’ve never even seen anyone playing that song. Amazing. I know you must’ve been working on that one for a while.
So I just plugged one of these in, and it is a good pedal. What I like about is it is versatile, you get three distinct fuzz tones in one box. Furthermore the germanium transistor tones are pretty good. This is significant because real germanium transistors are very finicky. Pedals with these transistors will sound different pedal to pedal, and more significantly will change with the temperature. That this pedal will stay stable despite the temperature and probably be consistent pedal to pedal makes it pretty great in my book. On some sounds like overdrive, I don't ever want digital modeling, but on a fuzz it is perfectly fine, because fuzz pedals already sound funky and weird. I think it is a pretty good pedal, and I am a person who isn't a big Boss pedal fan. Playing it live will be the litmus test, however. If I change my mind, I will update this post. Oh, and read the instructions. The middle setting does not work until you get the gain setting passed noon. I bought the pedal used, thought there was a problem, and thought there might be an internal bias control, and went online for the user manual. It explains this fact. The middle setting only wakes up when the gain setting is past noon. Hope all this helps.
holy shit, if this audio was with a boutique fuzz pedal in the picture, you cork sniffers would be frothing....this thing sounds fucking awesome. just listen to that intro???!!! boss haters gtfo
Sounds friggin awesome, for a DSP modelled fuzz which I'm guessing doesn't have all the associated futzyness of the weird transistors that go into a real fuzz. Very cool.
Personally, my biggest issue with this pedal is that it replaced the earlier FZ-2 and FZ-3, which were not modelling pedals at all. They're both rather respected in the stoner/doom community, and they were affordable because they weren't boutique. This one seems geared towards classic tones, and it fulfills that role well.
Besides Andy's studio-musician level skills, I think that a great tube source tone and the compression are what make the gear demoed sound so great. Just listen to his voice. No-ones voice sounds like that naturally. There's a lot of filtering and various sound optimization going on. ProGuitarShop sets the bar.
On PGS's site, you'll find analog options in the same price range as this pedal. I am frugal when it comes to buying new gear, though the gear that I do have is good quality and useful. When I was younger, I made a lot of impulse buys on gear, which has led me to become a more informed consumer. Now, I do research before I buy gear, so that when I hear a cool demo featuring studio recordings of Hendrix covers, I don't immediately need to go out and buy it.
Sound is subjective it’s really down to a lot of different combinations and variables within your playing... i.e. the fat on your fingers, the type of pic, the type of guitar , the Amp etc... and the quality of the SONG...(least we forget)!!!
don't get me wrong, i LOVE my Double Muff, Big Muff, Little Big Muff and Tone Wiker Big Muff .... I'm a fan of MUFF sounds and that's why I bought them all, but I like buying other stuff to continue exploring and having fun out of the "common water" .... Cheers and Merry Christmas
I actually don’t mind this pedal. I use it with a blood moon phaser for some cool shoegaze tones. I don’t use it for basic rock and roll like most will. Just find a good amp to use it with and you’ll probably get some use with it.
This pedal works great. It's funny how the guitar nerds talk about boutique handmade analog pedals over the digital. At the end of the day they buy expensive pedals just to play in their bedroom.
So so so, a digital fuzz, eh? Us analog faithful spy blasphemy! Yeah yeah, for the same price, you buy a big muff, but they are poorly made, don't sound anything like the originals, and lose all dynamics of your playing. It's like a vaccumm cleaner. This FZ-5 is a great pedal because 1. 3 fuzzes in one 2. Additional gain on tap 3. More reliable and not tempermental and finally 4. Looks badass in that silver enclosure. Who doesn't eant a pedal that says "FUZZ" on it?
It doesn't sounds like crap. It sounds like an overdriven amp. With lots of noise. It goes "FZZZZZ". It's a Fuzz pedal. It sounds dirty. That's what it's meant for.
The best Fuzz pedal I ever bought was the JHS Triangle Illuminati mod pedal. Combine that with tweed. Thunderous roar. I made figurines fall off my furniture 25 ft away with that bass roar.
I'm surprised I didn't read it here somewhere, but Fuzz-Pedals are not meant to be used with clean set amps! In a demo you'd have to, I guess, but they come to life when combined with an overdriven amp, and the two sounds blend! I own a FZ-5 and in Fuzzface-Mode put in front of a crunchy Marshall, the sound is really killer!
That's all dependent on the fuzz pedal and the sound you're going for. For fuzz face style fuzzes, I totally agree. But big muff kind of fuzzes sound better into a clean amp, or at least a mostly clean amp, to me.
Interesting point, but the tonal differences are obvious. Since the digital part is translated back into analog somewhere along the signal path before it hits the output jack, there must be a few analog components doing the job, either on the chip, or the board. The tolerance (accuracy) of resistor and cap values on ICs isn't that great. You probably already know that.

Andy proves you wrong here. It's the player, not the gear. He can make an inexpensive pedal sound like a gem because he has talent. You obviously need an expensive boutique pedal to compensate for your lack of innate ability, but truly great players like Andy don't need it.
You know a lot more than I do about the engineering side. I'm sure you have a great ear too (but mine ain't bad either). I think I read somewhere that "resisters" inside an IC can vary much more than the 1% discrete components (and 1% is surprising, must be pretty costly even at volume pricing), and if any part of it contains analog circuitry, that might account for distinct differences in actual sound, which otherwise has no explanation - at least not yet. Best regards.
that´s call "knowing how to use it and where to plug it" i´ve bought a couple pedals just because of the andy´s reviews and belive me i havent being disapointed yet. It all depends of your gear and knowing how to pull out some juice properly of the pedal you´re using my friend
Hands down the best fuzz pedal. I don't like fuzz pedals at all but you can check out Heroine album by From First to Last. That to me has the best fuzz sounding tone and I tempted to buy one.
Thanks. It's already gone so I can't try it but I'm fairly sure I tried all pickups in all positions. I'd hoped to use it for the Blue on Black solo by Kenny Wayne Shepherd. KWS does use the neck pickup and goes down to the 10th fret (close enough), but there is no problem hearing the octave. He's using a much better pedal, but one that this pedal should at least be able to approximate. Didn't work for me, or on some of the UA-cam demos I've seen. Anyway, thanks again for the info.
I think thats how it works with just about any pedal, but I think the fuzz market is big enough that I could find something else that would satisfy if these become sought-after
I think PGS should have used the audio from the Boss FZ-5 and showed some other box with fancy graphics and wouldn't be one dislike on this demo. You guys should pull the old switcharoo sometime. :)
This is a really nice pedal. Not too much fuzz, it's just right for that vintage feel. If I'm being honest most fuzz pedals sound way too dirty and over the top, this pedal hits the right spot
its predecessor actually. fuzz a different gain structure than the average distortion or overdrive pedal. so you can imagine: a clean sound has a round sound wave structure. a distortion pedal has a slightly flattened top with round edges to that flat think. a fuzz sound has waves that look like they are simply cut off on top, looks like some kind of saw, and sounds like it too. some kind of dirty, sawy, scratchy distortion.
The Octavia setting sound very much like a Fender Blender IMO. Compare this demo with the one made by gearwire and you will see the difference that the player does.
The big plus about your video-review is that its instant playing when you start the video, exactly what people want to hear immediatelly.
