2023 here, the videos are still as useful as they were in 2011. Thank you!
That's really great to hear - happy adventuring :)
I just picked up the game (yes, I'm VERY late to the party), but even 9 years later this video series was very helpful. I was intimidated with the game at first and wasn't sure I wanted to invest the time or money, but this video series definitely helped put my mind at ease and now I'm several expansions and adventure packs in to LOTR TCG. Thanks for your hard work Rodney!
So glad this was helpful - the game intimidated me at first as well!
I can't believe I'm watching these videos almost a decade after they were released. I'm really excited waiting for my box to come in, but your explanation for the game has been invaluable.
Never too late to learn a great game!
Gimli seeing Legolas offing the mighty spider : IT STILL COUNTS FOR ONE
I just got this game for Christmas, and this series was extremely helpful
So glad to hear it - have a great time adventuring!
Wow, what a great video series! I watched it from beginning to end in one sitting and now I'm on my way to buy the game. Thanks Rodney!
All the best in your adventuring!
I just did the same! Now starting my first game!
Looks like I’m not the only person buying the game after watching this series in one sitting!
@@BillyIndiana 1 year later… how do you like the game?
@@shawnfairbanks9339 It is one of my top 20 games. I am not sure where it falls in that list, but might even be in the top 10. I hadn't played it in a long time until this weekend, and got a few games in over the Thanksgiving holiday.
About to break this game out for the first time in a while and this series helped me remember some of the smaller rules. This series is A watch played classic!
Thanks Jason - have a great time adventuring!
Excellent series, very clear both in production and explanations. It has made learning from scratch very easy. Thanks very much for all your work on this!
Very nice to know you found it helpful!
Rod, your video tutorials are excellent! They are my "go to" guide for purchasing and learning new games. Thank you!
Thanks Molly :)
No matter how many years later these videos were amazing and highly instructional, as usual with this channel! Thanks, Rodney!
Thank you kindly Gustavo!
Hi from New Zealand :) I love your videos Rodney, I've been watching your series for a year or so now and this video series helped me make the decision to buy TLOTR: LCG a few months ago. I've been loving the game, it's heaps of fun. I'm also thinking of getting Mice and Mystics some day thanks to your play through. Thanks for all that you do, it really helps to get an idea of what the games involve and whether or not I'd enjoy them.
SO nice to know that the videos have been helpful Nicholas :)
What an exciting play through! Great ending.
So glad you enjoyed Brian!
Thank you so much for this tutorial + play through series! I was super daunted by the rules booklet but this series made it so simple for me to understand. I just scored a sealed copy for $23 and am EXCITED to play with my girlfriend or solo. Better late then never!!
What a great deal! Have a wonderful time playing :)
Review, good video collection. deffinately worth re-watching.
Very glad you enjoyed it!
Nice work!
Thanks for making this series - very helpful. I'm going to play my first game now. Remember there are no mistakes, just learning opportunities :-)
Enjoy!!
Just donated to your indiegogo campaign. Thanks for making these great tutorials.
Ah, that means a lot Nikesh, thank you so much!
Excellent job sir!
I'd just like to say thanks for these vids. I would have been stuffed without them. I watched these beforehand, then during, then after.
Your delivery is exceptional, I really appreciate you posting everything.
I am a massive noob to these games, and given this is 2018, I'm glad I'm enjoying these considering I'm so late to the genre. How could you could play this without Internet help, I dunno it would be hard.
Thanks again!!!!!
Hey Brendo - thank you for the very kind feedback - it means a lot to know these videos were helpful to you. Welcome to the genre!
Great videos as always Rodney! I've been wondering for several years if I should invest in this game or not. I have the Game of Thrones 1st edition LCG. When they came out with 2nd edition I was bummed b/c I had invested in buying the extra houses cards and other expansion card sets.
But having watched this series of videos and reading that the expansions still go with the base game and just add new campaigns, I'm more intrigued than ever. I'm seriously considering getting this game in the next year or so. Thank you again Rodney for always having awesome helpful videos and your humor.
So glad it was helpful, and if you pick up a set, I hope you have a great time playing!
Just bought the core set (others on the way :) ) watched countless review videos , finally found your channel . Not only did you teach me how to play the game but you made me laugh as well
Great job Rodney (and Family) keep up the good work
As a LOTR fan do you intend to play some of the other sets ?
Again thanks
I own many of the expansions. I don't plan to feature them on the show, as I try to cover a variety of game on the channel, but personally, I will be :)
***** I recall a shorter series you made where you played through one of the expansions with Luke -- is my memory failing me? I was looking for these videos the other night so the gf and I could see if we were playing our 2-player game (and also, first game) in the correct order. Great series, btw!
Mark Rampton I don't believe I shot anything LoTR related, except for this series. Maybe you're remembering the quick one shot we did with Android Netrunner?
***** I guess I'm starting to show my age then. I have this very clear memory of the two of you playing through several rounds using the Black Riders expansion (or another that had hobbit heros) -- chosen by Luke. But I'll check out the Netrunner episodes regardless ;)
Mark Rampton Nope, that wasn't me. Maybe Couple versus Cardboard?
Thanks for the playthrough! Watched them all! I have the game and have tried in the past to delve into it. I wanted to love it as I thought it would be a nice solo game. Something about it just didn’t click with me and it sat on my shelf for quite a while. Yesterday however, I went out and bought card protectors in preparation for finally falling in love with this game and expecting many playthroughs thereafter. LOVED it! I finally “got it” I guess. Expansions on the way -sigh- 😜
A big part of why I have this channel is to help people decide if a game is for them or not, and these kind of comments always warm my heart. I'm glad my video made you give the game a second chance!
Watch It Played zoinks! Have you moved on to any of the other quests yet? The second one is RUTHLESS! Think I’m going to be stuck on that for a while....😜 Hill trolls are so rude!
It's brutal, but wait until scenario 3 :)
Clap Clap Clap!!! Your Videos stand to all L.O.T.R. LCG game videos Good job sir!!!! you Are The ILLUMINATOR!
Very kind Gelo, it was a pleasure to create this series. Glad you enjoyed it!
Great videos. You take the frustration out of learning all these rules. Do not sweat some of the oversights. Had to Subscribe.
Thanks for joining us!
because you committed legolas to that last combat, i can see a ling arguement ensuing between the two over who gets credit for that kill.
I would expect so :)
Lol, you're so fast with these videos, didn't even notice you'd already made episode 11.
Disregard :D and here I go to watch it...
Hi, I would like to really thankyou for this set of videos. I have watched the whole lot on LOTR LCG and found them immensely helpful!
Could you please tell me which card sleeves you are using in these videos?
You're very welcome. I was using clear dragonshield sleeves in this video.
I just started to look into the game (better late than never ^^). Thanks for this, it's really helpfull.
For a matter of scoring, you could have defeat the Hammerhorn which is Victory 5, with Legolas. Gimli had enough strength to take down the main ennemy all by himself..
Thanks for checking out the series! And you could very well be right about the strategy tip :)
Hi,
Very nice videos indeed!
I just noticed you may have scored better. During the last turn, you decided to attack the Ungoliant Spawn with Gimli + Legolas, leaving absolutely nothing from that nice little spider (attack strength 13 vs defense strength 2 and only 8 hit points left to that already burried animal).
Great game! I'd have not sent Gimli on that last quest (penultimate turn), which would have left him unexhausted, and left you enough attack strength to defeat the spawn that turn.
Of course, that may have left me open to some horrible treachery effect that I don't know about.
Awesome videos man!
What an amazing game :D. I was able to pick up 3 core sets for a little less then $18 each on amazon a few weeks ago (with free 2 day shipping even!).
What a sweet deal that was!
Strategy of this deck:
Tie a hapless soldier to a tree, have Legolas in that tree, wait for an enemy to kill the soldier, have Legolas kill the enemy, blow the horn to attract new enemies, repeat.
That...
doesn't sound very heroic... :(
I've tried twice to win this scenario with only tactical sphere and didn't even got close to it. Congratulations for your play over there.
João José I had the same success as you, but then I went to record and amazingly things went differently.
Big thanks for the great explanation on how to play.
I may be starting very late with this game but I was able to get my hands on a cheap copy and ready to play!
First game I played with the tactics deck and was able to win 🥳
Just finishes my second game with the lore deck because I did draw 5 location cards in a row. Unable to compete with a threath strengt of 9 😭
Does this happen often?
Peace
Joe
Glad the video was helpful, I hope you continue to have fun playing!
Rodney will you be playing the upcoming revised core set? I'm a new player and would love to see your explanation for the new boons/burdens mechanic
Thanks for the interest! I talk a bit about that here: ua-cam.com/video/EdtDuvIUa6A/v-deo.html&t=342
I will reŵatch this series, loved it.
Very glad you enjoyed Daria :)
Watch It Played So im playing alone for the first time, and at the end of the First Round ( using Spirit Sphere ) I have 2 progress points on the old forest road, Eleanor has 2 hits from Forest spider ( shadow effect made that happen ) Dunhere has attacked Forest Spider for 1 Hit. Ungoliant Spawn did not engage due to higer threat than tracker. So my question is, at the beginning of round 2, do I add up the threat of the Forest Spider thats engaged with Eleanor but defended by Dunhere against the willpower of the heroes?
Once a enemy is not in the staging area, it is not longer adding its threat to the staging area. So if the Forest Spider has left the staging area, and is now engaged with Eleanor, you don't count it's threat when checking the success of your commit Quest points. Hope that helps.
Watch It Played It helps alot and thankyou for the fast reply, I appreciate that alot
Watch It Played Here is how my game ended but i think i made a mistake somewhere: attacking cards are Forest spider, King Spider, Ungoliant spawn, I managed to use Hosty Stroke 'Event' card to dismiss Ungoliant spawn shadow card, Ungoliant spawn Killed Eleanor. No attackers as Eowyn was exhausted with Ally 'Norther Tracker'. forest spider and king spider with 2 shadow cards would have killed me anyways, declared defeat. But im sure i missed something. I will keep practicing this game.
Would be cool if there were effects you could carry over from one quest to another. A sort of momentum you could build from one quest to the next.
I haven't played some of the later games in the Saga expansions, but I believe they add elements like this.
Wow. Excellent work. I will now sheepishly hang my head and apologize for trying to dissuade you from using the Tactics deck in this series... Once again, nice job!
I think you had good advice - I was very, VERY fortunate in this play through :)
Laughed at the name change sign. :)
I was surprised I was actually making some of the decisions you were. However, I realized that my attention to detail is not as good as yours. I would surely neglect to follow some of those steps. The game's is aesthetically pleasing, but for me (a more casual player), a lil' overbearing/or overwhelming. I think I'll stick with my retired LotR: TMG, or maybe I'll try Castle Panic for a cooperative game. Thank you for saving me some money.
Excellent video series, but I seem to be missing something here. Between the end of Lord Of The Rings LCG - Game Play 6 and the beginning of LCG - Game Play 7, the hummerhorn is gone, Legolas' attachments are gone and the threat level has been reduced by 1. You do reference the encounter, but why is it not included in the video?
Is it possible you missed this episode: ua-cam.com/video/vAX_MKOzEIo/v-deo.html
That was it. Thanks. I did miss the Corrections video. You still sold me on the game.
Excellent video! Quick question: Does the Travel phase occur in the same way, meaning if you pull a location card during the Quest phase you need to travel there, when you are fighting with the Ungolian Spawn at the end of the game? Thank you!
You never have to travel, but if you don't, your threat will go up - even during the later rounds of the game - is that what you mean?
@@WatchItPlayed Hi Rodney, that's what I meant. I wasn't sure if you had to continue going through each and every one of the seven phases that occur within a round once you are engaged with the Ungoliant Spawn, which you do. Thanks for your help!
@@vegankatzman A pleasure! Unless a scenario says otherwise, you still continue each round as normal (it's been awhile since I put this video online, but I don't think the Ungoliant says that it changes any of the rules for the round - if ti does, tan ignore me, and obey the Ungoliant :) )
Great.
Have the game but still not played it because of confusion !!!!!!
Kind regards.
Hope this helps you get to enjoying the game!
You do good work sir.
One question. I know that to equip an attachment you have to pay for it with resource tokens from heroes with the same sphere as the attachment, but could the hero that equips the attachment after you payed the cost be from a different sphere? Assuming you were playing with a multisphere deck?
The attachment, but after you pay for it can it be equipped but a hero of a different sphere?
Yes, you can attach the equipment to whomever you wish, regardless of sphere.
Hey Rodney, I started playing just now (can’t believe I was missing out on this) and I have a question. If I get to stage 3B on the quest phase and add Ungoliant’s Spawn into the staging area; shouldn’t I continue on to the travel, engagement and finally combat phase (at which point I would fight Ungoliant’s Spawn during the same round)? On this video it seems like you added Ungoliant’s Spawn to the staging area and went right into the Refresh phase instead of following the usual quest-travel-engagement-combat sequence. Thanks for all the videos!
I shot this long enough ago that this took a bit of digging :) In the previous video I added the progress tokens during the Combat phase (as a part of a combat effect), so the quest was completed at that point in a round, not during the usual questing phase. Hope that helps?
@@WatchItPlayed Got it, but then if I’m playing a Leadership deck and I don’t have that effect since my heroes are all different, then after adding Ungoliant’s Spawn to the staging area I should move on to travel-engagement (at which point I would engage Ungoliant’s Spawn)-combat-refresh as usual?
@@josevalerio18 You would continue on from wherever you were in the round before the Ungoliant Spawn came up.
I imagine how much easier this game could have bin in you allowed Gimli to eat the damage in the beginning than attach the armor. Well GG I was expecting a more deadly end :D well played.
+M Balazs I was expecting a deadly end too :)
***** youd did a grate game :D
Good game, but you could have cleared the board. Legolas's attack of 3 would kill the hummerhorn - 3hp no defence. Gimli had an attack of 10, US's defence of 2 would mean 8 damage, plus the one already there would have killed him too, so you would also have got the hummerhorn's victory points to improve your score.
I'm sure this is too late, but you could have attacked the Hummerhorns with Legolas. You'd still kill the Ungoliant Spawn with Gimli, and you'd kill the Hummerhorns with Legolas. This would give you the extra victory points from the Hummerhorns. I know victory points don't really matter, but just a note.
Hey - good tips are helpful for future viewers, so thanks!
Can you move an attachment once its been assigned to a hero?
No, you cannot move an attachment once you've attached it to a character (unless the attachment says otherwise).
ha, if someone didn't see last episode they're thinking "woah...this guy's good!" ; )
Regarding the Hummerhorn's forced ability. Would that still trigger of you chose to optionally engage it?
Afraid so, from the rules: Whether an enemy is engaged through an engagement check, through a card effect, or through a player’s choice, the end result is the same, with the enemy and the player engaging one another. In all cases, the player is considered to have engaged the enemy and the enemy is considered to have engaged the player.
@@WatchItPlayed OK, thank you :) It's great that you still bother to reply to comments on an 8 year old video
Dale Prosser A pleasure! Glad to have you here :)
Just a quick question, so when the threat level of the enemy is greater than ours, they don't attack?
Hmmm, your wording makes that a little tricky to answer. There are two different concepts. 1) An enemy engaging you (leaving the staging area to go in front of a player) and 2) an enemy attacking you (comparing attack and defense, doing damage, etc)
For an enemy to automatically leave the staging area to engage you, your threat has to be equal to or higher than them.
@@WatchItPlayed I see. Yes that have answered my question. Thanks so much, videos helping me out ☺️
Hi! Do we need to discard the shadow card after the turn if the enemy card is not dead yet. Or does the enemy card keep the shadow card till it dies? Thanks!
Juan Carlos Younghandsome It is discarded after that turn.
Thank you so much! I've played 2 games after watching this series. Now I have 2 questions left. So example the card Miner of the Iron Hills, it has a response card effect(After the card enters play), does this mean I can trigger it every turn or only once per card/game?
Another is the attachmentt Self Preservetion, it says I can heal 2 points of damage from my attached character(I need to exhaust it), does this mean I can trigger this every turn?
Thank you so much!
Juan Carlos Younghandsome Right, if the effect occurs when it 'enters pay', than the effect only resolves once (unless you can remove it from play somehow and then have it reenter play).
The other effect triggers each time you 'exhaust' it, so you get the benefit every time you exhaust it (so, likely, once per round).
Hope that helps and happy adventuring!
Alright that clarifies everything! I'm loving the game so far, and i'm trying to find the expansion packs already lol thanks!
Juan Carlos Younghandsome Glad to help :)
I found almost impossible to win this scenario (hard mode) with the tactics deck.
It's crazy tough.
It's a little odd how in this game, Gimli can use Citadel Plate and Blade of Gondolin, neither of which are Dwarven items. I'm having a hard time picturing Gimli in Gondorian plate. XD
He's a very determined Dwarf!
Can't believe you won with tactics
Me either!
Do already attacking, not-killed enemies get always a new shadow card when they are attacking a player in the 'next round' ??
Yes.
If you had discarded the Armor from Gimli - would he have died?
Yep!
You managed to win this game...solo...with a tactics deck?
Wow...
I was surprised too!
WTF?! Going from Game Play 6 to 7 does NOT add up at all!!! We were supposed to pick a card and then we go to a totally different set up. Loved this series but... I'm lost.
