This game really is one of the best games ever made. I only stopped playing because of the glory that is Arkham Horror Living Card Game. Such incredible gems of game design.
@@TheGameLocker Right, right. At first I thought "pull a random horrible number out of a bag and suffer" was a bad mechanic, but it becomes manageable, and you generally only do things when you've got a very strong chance of success. But the missions are far more detailed and thematic than LoTR, and the campaigns are amazing as your deck grows and you gain injuries and permanent effects from the campaign. But the deck design is more obvious. You still plan a puzzle based on who you bring on a campaign, but it's more about how you upgrade than how you build. Arkham ends up telling a story that is unique to you through the game mechanics alone, which is awesome. We lost a long-standing police officer near the end of a campaign where we were walking down a magical staircase to our doom, and we were like...how are we going to justify a new character suddenly appearing when he dies (as per game mechanics), and our player realized they were playing the actress, so we rationalized it as if she had been acting as the police officer the whole time and only now revealed herself. Kind of silly, but an iconic memory. That poor cop - he stayed back and took permanent harms so many times to save us, until it finally killed him. So, LotR is an awesome puzzle game with less total randomness, and Arkham Horror is a roleplaying game about managing how horrible things get and seeing how far you can make it. It's about triage and tough decisions. Really well done games.

I had picked up the old slim core box some time ago, played it 2-handed for a tiny bit, then put it away because I didn't care for it. I recently decided to give it another try but with true-solo and have been loving it. Catching this video, however, has shone a massive revelatory light on some of the things I hadn't truly understood too well (the staging area, simultaneous questing, threat checks, etc) and has made my last few games even more enjoyable. Now I'm grabbing saga boxes, starter decks, and excited for it. Thank you!
This is hands down the best play throughout video available on lotr card game. It is complete, comprehensive (even for people with non-English native language speaker). This is great job. Very well done. Now I’m good to go for solo LOTR adventures !
Whenever I look at the time bar of a rules teach and it exceeds 30 minutes, I just don't watch it. I want to save time on learning but reading usually takes around an hour or two so why watch a video. But this? This was amazing...Do not regret one bit, and the entire hour is actually fun.
Thank you for clarifying the rules. Even after playing it multiple times, I completely skipped the difference between the Engagement and Staging Area Cards..... I would have had so much more success XD!!!!
Sin duda, el mejor tutorial para aprender el juego. You show a high level of understanding of the game rules and mechanics, which sets you apart from other UA-camrs I’ve seen. Well done! Greetings from Spain.
Been playing this game since it first dropped in 2011, and this is such an outstanding learn-to-play guide! Really fantastic work on the editing. Thank you for making this tricky game such a breeze to learn.
I was a little sceptical at how long the video was but after trying (and failing) to learn the game solo I watched. You've made an amazing, well paced and incredibly clear tutorial video. Probably the best of any game tutorial I've seen. Thank you so much!
My first proper UA-cam comment ever. I have been trying to learn this game for ages and this is the best video I have seen. So excited to be playing it!
Just ordered this along with a few other board games to get free shipping. Your intro along with my memories of seeing all the expansions this game had on the shelves of my old local store sold me. Loving this breakdown and I can’t wait to watch Part 2 now!
Hey watching your vid for the first time. I saw that you had other projects planned ? What are the odds that you scrap that idea and make more Lotr content haha
Lol, did I mention other projects? I've got no other video projects planned at this time aside from LOTR content (Part 2 tutorial is next), but I can't guarantee any content will come out quickly - very busy season of life for me :)
@TheGameLocker haha your last comment was about how you had other projects that weren't lotr related and that was 3 months ago. Happy to hear that the reverse is happening!!!
I finally got around to watching your tutorial, and I think you nailed it dude! I remember you mentioning you put a lot of time into this, and it really shows! I'm going to show this to my best friend who is also a long time Lord of the Rings fan that I mentioned this game to over the phone just about a week ago. I didn't go in depth about the game since I know how long it would take to explain, so I needed a good how to play video, and I remember you mentioning yours. I really like the idea of covering parts of the cards and uncovering them as they are needed! There were also a couple rules that I didn't even know about.
wow - found this as I just purchased the game and I must say - this is one of the best How to Play videos I've watched, and I've watched a lot. Great work and keep them coming!
Absolutely perfect video! Pretty clear, easy to understand and excellent explanations and tips for any LOTR Card Game player. Thanks and greetings from Brazil.
Started playing the game a couple of weeks ago and thought I knew the rules - but this video really cemented what I knew and taught me a few things I didn't (e.g. questing simultaneously so that the Aragorn / Theodred combo doesn't require Aragorn to have already had a resource token waiting). Thank you. Continue doing these videos! Please!
I have watched the video, it is amazing!!!!!!!! You explain things in such a clear and easy to understand way. Thank you very much. I am immediatelz jumping to other videos, and I feel so ready instead of lost for my own gameplay ;)

It‘s extremely rare for me to comment on a video, but I just have to say this: Thank you for taking the time and sharing your insights. You did an awesome job, and you honestly deserve a lot more views, a whole lot! Ps: Really looking forward to part 2. Please keep doing lotr lcg videos! 😉
I had made a comment about your quote on "complex" with this game. I deleted it because I literally have core set and that statement is not true I'm sure! Thanks for the video, I've been playing for a bit too! I learned so much more
You are extremely underrated and this is a very well done presentation. I’m mostly here to see how the game works before purchasing. Thank you so much for making these videos!
Awesome explanation of this great game, i've bought it and after seeing this video it's given me more confidence to play it!! Thanks a lot...keep on doing this great tutorials and i'm looking forward to chapter two!! Greetings from Belgium!!
Been playing for over a year now and still like to watch these videos, never knowing what new detail I might learn. This presentation resembles nothing more than how I try to explain the rules to friends when I introduce them to the game. In fact I would call it "the friendly way" (I was put off for some time by "the easy way", fearing there would be some sort of dumbing down -- nothing like that after all!) Will now point all people searching for this content to this video. High production value too, as noted elsewhere. Looking forward to part 2 😊 Oh and about details to learn: you seem to be quite certain that one of the instances of "the player gets to choose the order they prefer" applies to discarding enemy and shadow cards. I have had difficulty finding a definitive ruling on this, including in various online discussions. I would definitely choose the order in which various remaining shadow cards are discarded at the end of the combat phase, but am still unsure for the common case of a shadow card being discarded at the same time as a destroyed enemy. Will now play it your way until further notice 😊
I'm so glad this was helpful! I was definitely trying to hit the tone of "this is how I would explain the game to my friends." The common case I found for the first player deciding the order in which to discard a defeated enemy & its shadow card comes from page 16 of the Learn To Play book, where it says "If an enemy card leaves play, its shadow card is discarded." I think the assumption is that these two things happen simultaneously, so first player always decides the order of simultaneous things, and I haven't found anything different otherwise. If you do, let me know! But this at least can make the game more fun by giving you more decisions to make :)
Really well-made and easy to follow. Amazing editing, felt very professional and modernized. I bought the core + first cycle a long time ago, couldnt get into it and it felt overly complex. After coming back to it now, and plenty of plays of the other fantasy flight lcgs under my belt, this made it feel like a cake walk. Great job!
47:10 I am new LotR LCG player (just played 1st quest from core box) coming from Marvel Champions LCG and I supose that Spider web can not be discarded since it is a Treachery even though it behaves as an attachment. But the keyword on it is the Treachery 🙂 Super useful video. I was not sure how to handle Action windows - I supposed that in Resource phase I can only use Actions which gives me resources or cards and so on. Well the true is that the Reference rule book does not specify it so just to be sure I watched your video 🙂 Please continue with such a great work. Thanks.
I bought the revised edition at the beginning of this year, I've already played more than 70 times and anyway it was such a pleasure looking at this video. I think this is going to become a 'must-see' for new LOTR:LCG players. Congratulations for this great work!
Sir, you have done an amazing job with this tutorial, and EARNED a subscriber. Without question the best how-to-play video I’ve ever seen. Perfect. I now need you to make one for every game I play!! 😂
43:37 Yeah... uhhh... make sure you guys absolutely remember this part. I just had my first game recently and I kept on getting locations. Every time I had characters commit to the quest it was usually my 13 willpower vs like 2 or 4 threat... I didn't overflow progress tokens...
Thank you for creating this. I'm a Marvel Champions player so I naturally want to burn all of my extra cash on another lcg! I've been debating over Arkham and LOTR. LOTR seems much more finicky than MC but it's theme appeals to me more than AH. I've been looking for a video just like this. Thank you!
This is a must watch for all new players to LOTR LCG. I look forward to Part 2 and the advanced rules including multiplayer related keywords and expansion deck abilities. Possibly a discussion of important errata would be warranted to fully round off this series. Kudos
Thanks Keneil! I debated how much of the material from the FAQ to include in this series, and decided to keep it to just the core set rulebooks and player cards (with a little dabbling in the cards found in the Starter Decks). But I'll definitely try to include rules clarifications from the FAQ where it's appropriate :).
Great breakdown of the rules! I would caution new players though, that the progress overflow mentioned at 43:50 only applies for locations. Progress doesn't overflow from one quest to the next quest, it only overflows from the active location to the main quest.
This 'how to play' is epic! I learned the game several years ago and played it once or twice, but I've not had time for gaming in the years between. I've gotten the revised core set now and this guide was EXTREMELY helpful in getting into the game. It's so well put together and thought out and easy to follow. Thank you! I'm really looking forward to part 2 :)
Best video on whole yt! We deserve more of this! I had this game before gave it away cuz it was confusing and difficult to understand but gona buy it again now thanks to u ❤
@@ghostmk3322 Definitely take your time enjoying the revised core - my Top 35 tips video has lots of tips for how to get the most out of that core set experience. The next pack I'd recommend getting is the Dark of Mirkwood so you can play the 5-quest campaign combining it with the core set quests - that's a ton of fun. Then I'd recommend getting the Fellowship of the Ring box, one of the best expansions for this game ever with quests that will be familiar to you, and a great new set of player cards to build a Hobbit deck with. After that, the world is your oyster! The starter decks are all great (Elves & Dwarves are the best), the Angmar Awakened Hero expansion is best when combined with the Dream-Chaser Hero expansion. The Angmar Campaign is much harder than the Dream-Chaser Campaign, but both are excellent. Hope that helps!
@@ghostmk3322 Feel free to comment here for questions, but honestly the #1 best way to get rules questions answered is by joining the Facebook group for this game "Lord Of The Rings LCG Players". The community is amazing at helping new players, and you'll get better answers a lot faster than I can :)
Fantastic video :) I've read Learn to Play book (which is great, by the way) and still had some questions/doubts what to do and how to play in some certain situations or was not sure if I played correctly and according to the rules. This video helped me to understand the rules much better and answered to most of my questions. I would highly recommend to read the Rules book and to watch this video afterwards. It will save you a lot of time when learning to play this game.
Fantastic video. I'm a new player who just bought the revised core and already feel ready to play before reading the rules. Excellent job! Consider me subscribed.
I have just bought the game, watching your content while waiting for it to arrive. Very well done, great quality, very educational and clear yet to the point. Can't wait for part 2 :)
This was really terrific! I’ve been playing this game for a dozen years, and wouldn’t change anything in the way you presented this tutorial. (Minor note for sharp-eyed new players: Aragorn’s damage from defending in the first round should have carried over into the second round)
Thanks Henry! Yeah I beat myself up about Aragorn's damage, couldn't bring myself to re-record that round for the 4th time so I left it in and corrected it in the following round ;)
Wow. So thankful I found you from the beginner tips video. I just started investing on this brilliant card game (I’m also venturing into the Journey to the middle earth TLOTR board game 🤭). I can’t commend enough how thorough but beginner friendly this video is. I’m so pumped to delve deeper into this game. Gonna watch part 2!❤
@TheGameLocker thank you! I'm wanting to get a large quantity and was wondering how they looked and felt. I've used dragon shield and ultra pro eclipses almost exclusively on my mtg and pokemon decks, but wanted something more affordable for my budding LCG collection.
Nice, happy to hear you're able to enjoy this game now! I'm currently filming part 2 and 3, Campaign mode I plan to cover in Part 2, and if all goes according to plan I should have these uploaded sometime in July.
This was a great explaining video for this very difficult (but fun!!) game! Thanks a lot! Hope to find more in the future because you did a great job. 😊
This is very helpful. Looking forward to the video where you explain multiplayer (I hope it’s soon, my pals and I are trying to play next week!). Thanks again for the amazing tutorial!!
Definitely won’t be ready by next week, but if you understood this video then reading the “Learn To Play” book will be a breeze, because you’ll quickly be able to see what the differences are in multiplayer. Generally speaking, several phases are done in turn order starting with the person holding the “first player” token, which is passed around every refresh phase. The tricky ones are the engagement phase and combat phase, so pay special attention to those in the rulebook. Have fun!
This is hands down the best, most well thought out tutorial of any board/card game I’ve ever watched on UA-cam. Thank you!
I agree, I need this for every game I buy!

If you do, let me know! But this at least can make the game more fun by giving you more decisions to make :)
I am confused when the action windows are.
This format is far and away the best format of all how to learn to play videos! I hope you keep going, subscribed!!
Thanks very much! I hope to make more in the future as well! Hard in this season, but maybe the next season :)
Great job!
Thanks so much! I definitely spent a great deal of time planning this one out, I'm so glad it was easy for you to follow!
Great tutorial, makes a lot of sense. Best one I've seen, I wish
all tutorials showed as much patience, but where is Part 2?
Absolutely brilliant and neat! Love your explanation style and editing. Thank you.
Thank you so much!
Got this for Christmas and your walk through really helped. Very much looking forward to part 2!
Thanks for the video! I learn best through videos like this. Learning through rulebooks is too frustrating for me. Happy new year!
Just like others have said i will say it as well. This is probably the best learn to play i have watched. Keep up the great work!
Thanks very much!
This tutorial is absolutely amazing! Best tutorial I’ve ever watched on this game!
Thanks!
Thank you for your videos; they're the reason I started playing LOTR LCG.
You're so welcome! I'm glad they're helpful!
Thanks for putting this together. Looking forward to part 2.
47:10 I am new LotR LCG player (just played 1st quest from core box) coming from Marvel Champions LCG and I supose that Spider web can not be discarded since it is a Treachery even though it behaves as an attachment. But the keyword on it is the Treachery 🙂
Super useful video. I was not sure how to handle Action windows - I supposed that in Resource phase I can only use Actions which gives me resources or cards and so on. Well the true is that the Reference rule book does not specify it so just to be sure I watched your video 🙂 Please continue with such a great work. Thanks.
So glad it was helpful for you - thanks for watching!
I bought the revised edition at the beginning of this year, I've already played more than 70 times and anyway it was such a pleasure looking at this video. I think this is going to become a 'must-see' for new LOTR:LCG players. Congratulations for this great work!
Thank you very much! This took longer than I ever expected it would, so I’m super relieved it’s published now.
Sir, you have done an amazing job with this tutorial, and EARNED a subscriber. Without question the best how-to-play video I’ve ever seen. Perfect. I now need you to make one for every game I play!! 😂
Lol, thank you very much!
Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! There's a lot more flexibility and openness to LOTR compared to MC - more action windows, more deckbuilding opportunities...
For me this is the best helping tutorial on YT! ❤ cant w8 for part 2 🤗 My hype has increased 100% for this game after watching your video 😅😁
So glad to hear it!
Thanks! And right you are - I mention that very point at 59:30 :)
This was astounding. Very well done.
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it!
So we’ll explained, thank you! Waiting on part 2 now!
This channel is perfect for a new player like myself, thank you! I know you put a lot of time into these videos, it’s very appreciated!
You are very welcome! So glad it was helpful!
Thanks Nevil!
Best video on whole yt! We deserve more of this! I had this game before gave it away cuz it was confusing and difficult to understand but gona buy it again now thanks to u ❤
Nice! I'm so glad this was helpful for you!
@@TheGameLocker after buying core set what is next box/hero pack i should get?
@@TheGameLocker is there way to reach u true email or ig for question about the game and rules?
So glad you found it helpful, thank you for watching!
Fantastic video. I'm a new player who just bought the revised core and already feel ready to play before reading the rules. Excellent job! Consider me subscribed.
That's awesome, I'm glad it was helpful!
I have just bought the game, watching your content while waiting for it to arrive. Very well done, great quality, very educational and clear yet to the point.
Can't wait for part 2 :)
Great video, really clarifies how to play and will absolutely help me get this to the table. Thanks so much!!
You're welcome! I'm so glad it was helpful!
Thanks for this tutorial. I just got this game and this "How to play" guide has really helped. Thank you.
Ah, it’s almost impossible to get through a game of this without mistakes or oversights. FFG should compensate you for this tutorial!
@@henrywilliams543 Haha, from your lips to their ears ;)
So glad it's been helpful! Part 3 will come eventually too :)
Extremely good tutorial! Well done mellon!
Danke!
Thank you very much!
I can only add to the others, this is a really quality video, thank you! I hope you have the time and motivation to do the second part sometime!
Thank you! Part 2 and 3 are in production!
Thanks for this great tutorial. I really see the game with new eyes now... You´ve earned a new follower.
Great video, I plan to watch it with my wife to help teach her how to play! I do have a question. What sleeves do you use on your cards?
I use Sleeve Kings - better quality than penny sleeves but still quite affordable!
@TheGameLocker thank you! I'm wanting to get a large quantity and was wondering how they looked and felt. I've used dragon shield and ultra pro eclipses almost exclusively on my mtg and pokemon decks, but wanted something more affordable for my budding LCG collection.
@@stevenrussell6920 Nothing beats Dragon Shield, but I only use those on my heroes.
Great video and after your explanation I gave this game a try and I love it. I hope you create more LOTR card game videos. Thank you!!!
Great tutorial. Sure wish it had been around when I first started playing. I am still finding little things I did differently than what this shows.
Can't wait for part 2!
The best Outstanding and Terrific breakdown out there! Hats off.
Thanks for the video, a friend just bought this game and we are anxious to play it!
Really looking forward for the part 2.
That was awesome! is part 2 coming? =)
Maybe a video on campaing mode would be nice.
A got the game after seeing this video.
Thanks!
Have fun!
@@TheGameLocker hell yeah. Thanks so much!!
