That lead voice is the incomparable and great Michael McDonald. I was 14 years old in 1979 and a high School Freshman when this bombshell song came out. Doobie Brothers were special!
His voice is smooth as butter. I was born in '93 and I listen to this song all the time!
The fool built up this relationship in his mind, which the girl had no idea of, she barely noticed him.
This is the meaning of this song
Micheal McDonald is lead. He has plenty of hits, and an awesome song writer and composer.
A friend once told me "Never chase after busses or women, 'cause they just leave you standing there."
The wise man has the power to see what this "fool" don't see...she ain't interested.
" NO WISE MAN HAS THE POWER, TO REASON AWAY..." When you're so deep like this man is, you can't reason yourself out of it, see the reality thst it 'aint gonna happen with this woman.
I find it interesting that it can work either way. 'No' wise man can reason with a fool. & 'The' wise man can reason away what the fool can't. Basically saying that same thing.
"What a fool believes, no wise man has the power to reason away!"
The lyric is "No Wise man has the power..." When you're in as deep as he is, nobody can get out....
@@parsrus Thanks for giving the correct quote.
The Doobie Bros harmonies were nearly the best in the biz.
He went on to sing "I keep forgetting we're not in love".
Yep. Don’t forget “Feedom”.!
I love The Doobie Brothers and Michael McDonald!
I saw The Doobie Brothers perform live on the sitcom WHAT'S HAPPENING back in the day.
I fell in love!
❤😊❤
Yes, it was a 2-parter! Good episodes! I saw them live and they were awesome!
There's also an innocence about this song, like a teenage Summer relationship that one partner thinks is a 30 year love affair, family and kids, other partner is all "I like you and all, this is just a Summer fling, babe" ... but the fool knows the same , wanting to set themselves up for the heartbreak, friends just let it happen
Micheal McDonald one of the kings of blue eye soul. One of the best in the biz.❤
The absolutely warmest voice ever...Michael McDonald.......
One of the best groups of the 70's. There catalog of music spans from the early 70's to the early 80's. They are in the rockin roll hall of fame. This song and album won Grammys in 1979. One of my favorite groups of all time. I grew up listening to them from grade school to when I was a Marine in the USMC.
I love this song, it's my favorite from the Doobie Brothers. Michael McDonald is singing lead and he had a great solo career too. Check out his mega-hit, "I Keep Forgetting" and his duet with Patti Labelle, "On My Own"! His voice is so beautiful and distinctive!💖💖
She did the one with Patti, I don't think she put it together yet
The simple fact that Michael McDonald can hold his own with a powerhouse like Patti Labelle gives testament to him as a vocalist. "On My Own" is one of the best duets of all time to my ears
Blue eyed soul...love the Doobie Brothers and the story of the song.
I'm 48, when I was 5 I used to sing this song around the house. I used to get in trouble because I thought Michael Mcdonald said something else when he said the wise man has the power lol
@onmysquare3536…I am 48 also and I sung 90% of the song lyrics wrong😅
I've always loved this song since I was a kid. Great reaction!
Dem boys can sang!!!
Written by Michael Macdonald + Kenny Loggins. They won the Grammy for Song of the Year 1979.
This is late Doobie Brothers. Michael Macdonald era was more soul + pop. Michael Macdonald on lead vocal + piano. Produced by Ted Templeman. Same man who later produced the first 5 Van Halen albums. Similar song: Steal Away sung by Robbie Dupree.
Michael McDonald sang with Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross, Steely Dan, Toto, the late James Ingram, Patti Labelle, Wang Chung. McDonald also wrote I'll Wait with Van Halen.
Suggested videos: 1 Michael Macdonald sings
I Keep Forgettin. 2 Van Halen performs I'll Wait live in 1984 in Montreal 3 Christopher Cross and Michael McDonald sing Run Like the Wind 4 Toto and Michael McDonald perform I'll Be Over You.
Michael McDonald is a legend. Check out his background vocals on This Is It with Kenny Loggins, Run Like The Wind with Christopher Cross, and his duets on Ever Changing Times with Aretha Franklin, Ya Moh Be There with James Ingram and I Just Can't Let Go with David Pack(Ambrosia) and James Ingram!
I Keep Forgetting by Michael McDonald ❤😊 He is the lead singer of the Doobie Brothers
Love the Doobie Brothers! Check out Long Train Runnin' and Black Water. Always great harmonies, lyrics and grooves!
Yay. You are the only one ever to pay attention to the lyrics. Good for you lady!!!!
Michael McDonald was that White boy with soul.
Dont forget the Righteous Brothers
The Doobie Brothers pre and post Michael McDonald were awesome. Michael McDonald also had a super solo career.
This song has such powerfull lyrics.
"What a fool believes he sees,
no wise man has the power to reason away
What seems to be
Is always better than nothing nothing at all..."
Isn't this spiritual poetry??
The wise man
@@mikewilliams1559
Nope, many years ago I' looked up the lyrics (just did it again) and it says 'No wise man...' And if you think about it for a second: How can a wise man have the power to reason away what a fool believes? He can't!
The lead singer is Michael McDonald
Glad to see your reaction to the Doobies. Its looks like you forgot that you reacted to Michael Mcdonald on his solo song "I keep forgettin", and you loved it
Absolutely Ashley!❤
Michael Mcdonald is the lead, you reacted to him with his duet with Patti Labelle on their collab on my own.
I’ve seen Michael twice solo and then with the Doobie Brothers. That velvet voice and excellent musicianship and songwriting. Doesn’t get any better than that. Michael is always invited to the cookout!
They never had a love connection all along! He was thinking that they did!
The lead singer Michael McDonald has a very unique voice and went on to do solo work. A very gifted singer by any standard. I have some of his Christmas stuff. Just incredible. Great reaction.
Song of the year 1979!
Such a great singer.
This song is about two lovers from long ago meeting again. One of them, the man, is still hoping there is some flame in the relationship, but the other, the woman, doesn't even remember him and is only meeting up to be nice. In the meeting, he thinks there is still something there, but she just indulges him with a meeting and leaves, forever. Kenny Loggins co-wrote this song with Michael McDonald. Loggins' version actually came out first, but he decided to let The Doobie Brothers to release their slicker version as the official single. “What a Fool Believes” was certified gold by the RIAA on April 14, 1979. It was won the Grammy for Song of the Year 1979 by a duo or group. Here's the lyrics below:
He came from somewhere back in her long ago
The sentimental fool don't see
Tryin' hard to recreate
What had yet to be created once in her life
She musters a smile
For his nostalgic tale
Never coming near what he wanted to say
Only to realize
It never really was
She had a place in his life
He never made her think twice
As he rises to her apology
Anybody else would surely know
He's watching her go
But what a fool believes he sees
No wise man has the power to reason away
What seems to be
Is always better than nothing
And nothing at all keeps sending him...
Somewhere back in her long ago
Where he can still believe there's a place in her life
Someday, somewhere, she will return
She had a place in his life
He never made her think twice
As he rises to her apology
Anybody else would surely know
He's watching her go
But what a fool believes he sees
No wise man has the power to reason away
What seems to be
Is always better than nothing
There's nothing at all
But what a fool believes he sees...
They were never lovers. It was all in his mind.
Micheal worked with Steely Dan and I believe the Steve Miller Band, Christopher Cross, James Ingram and more.
Don't forget Kenny Loggins.
Don't forget TOTO
Michael McDonald has worked with many people to include the group ambrosia, Kenny Loggins, Patti LaBelle, Aretha Franklin and the list goes on
Yes! I remember, the boy was bad!
Basically, he worked with everyone.
If you read the lyrics along with the song it takes on a WAY deeper meaning. Good job Sis!
What a great song!
This is gonna be good!
Incredible music. And complex ,sad story.
I graduated high school in 1979, this song was brand new that year! I'm telling y'all, we grew up listening to the absolute BEST music of all time! There were so many iconic bands in the 70s. There hasn't been a decade since that can compare to the artists of those days...PERIOD!
Fantastic reaction, darling! Your reactions are a breath of fresh air!
Michael McDonald is singing lead. BTW, this song won Grammys for Record of the Year and Song of the Year in 1980.
Yep love this song & reaction ❤
One of a kind, once you hear his voice, you always know it
Subscribed! thank you for looking at the BEST decade Ma'am...
I’m not even sure there was ever a relationship. I think he thought there was but I’m not sure there was. That’s Michael MacDonald singing lead. One of the best in the biz🙏🙏
That's always been my take on the song too.
Your Doobie Brothers "Minute by Minute" era line-up ~ Patrick Simmons Lead Guitar & Vocals , Michael McDonald Keyboards & Vocals , Tiran Porter Bass & Vocals , Jeff "Skunk" Baxter Lead Guitar & Vocals , John Hartman - Drums , Keith Knudsen Drums & Vocals , Bob LaKind Percussion & Vocals . Tom Johnston who was "on hiatus" from the band during this period of the band is the primary Lead singer & guitarist on many of the bands hits . He's been back with the band since it reformed in the late 80's after being broken up for a few years .
To better understand the feeling of hearing songs from the 1950s-1970s, I recommend you listen to the studio recording version. This way you are hearing the song the way is was initially heard on the radio, at sock hops and basement parties during those eras.
Awesome. Lead singer being the one and only Michael McDonald!! I love everything by this phenomenal band. His solo career is amazing also. You’ve reacted to Keep Forgetting by him
Michael McDonald has a very distinctive voice. Check out his duel with Patti La Belle. Beautiful.
Micheal is a musical genius songwriter and performer.. Aretha Franklin also recorded this song he wrote and had a hit with it ..❤🙏🙏❤
Michael McDonald is the singer
Michael McDonald was the lead
This react should of been the first Michael McDonald / Doobie Bros. reaction video. Incredible stuff all the way around: Lyrics, vocals, arrangement, video, impact.❤🔥🎤
My jam right here
For harmonies, try Crosby Stills Nash & Young - Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, Teach Your Children, or anything else by them
Micheal McDonald and Patti Labelle "On my own.
Wow, get into the lead singer Michael McDonald, he’s a legend, with so many hits as co lead singer with The Doobie Brothers, solo hits , and so many songs from other artists from the 70’s to the 90’s , and beyond, still performs today. Most of the songs he’s been part of he wrote or cowrote also..
Definitely one of the songs we called blue soul even though i believe they were a country band
That’s Michael McDonald You have reacted to him before with his song “I keep forgetting” And also a duet with Patti Label. Great singer!
The satiny dulcet tones of Michael Mc Donald. Really deep song too, if you listen.
You get an A+ for just picking this
Michael McDonald is a gift from God 😅 more please - ya Mo B There / On My Own - he duets with James Ingram and Patti Labelle ❤
A+... you keep topping yourself!😂
They never were an item, it is all in his mind!

You are such a kick to watch and listen to! 😁👍

The lead singer is Michael McDonald two videos of his previously the first one was I keep forgetting 2 on my own with Patti LaBelle
Great reaction. Michael Mcdonald is the truth. I suggest you check out "I Keep Forgettin'" or his duet with Patty LaBelle, "On My Own" for starters. There are so many other songs.
Ashley, you did Michael McDonald, the lead singer of the Doobie Brother's duet with Patti LaBelle a year ago.
You can always tell when a song is being sung by Michael McDonald's Wonderfully Unique voice.😊
I dig your vibe
Michael McDonald and the Eagles are an all-time great Blue eyed soul singer artist and group🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Good music never die.
👍👍💯❤️🔥
You really should check out a lot of Steely Dan songs. They are legendary for soul, rock and jazz. Really can't put them in a box though. You probably have heard some of their hits and didn't realize who Steely Dan was
🎉🎉🎉v😂😂 i litt sitting like wait till they hit that chorus on you lol. Lead is Michael McDonald 1 of best vocies
Love these guys. Lead singer Michael McDonald
I know of this song because of comedian Tony Baker's alligators videos 😂
This song, this band, and Mr. Michael McDonald is legendary. This younger generation doesn't really have the ear for great music. Cute little bop indeed!!
Michael McDonald, the lead singer here, does a duet with Patti LaBelle called "On My Own" that you might know, and will probably like if you haven't heard it. It was all over the radio some time ago.
🧡
Michael McDonald with Patty LaBelle "On my Own"
THE LYRICS WERE….YEARS AGO….THE WISE MAN HAS THE POWER….TO REASON AWAY….WHAT WE BELIEVE WE SEE…
Michael McDonald I Keep forgetting
ALWAYS have the lyrics on or available for a Michael McDonald song. He has a great and legendary voice, but he doesn't enunciate very well and it is almost impossible to fully understand what he is singing about on a first listen.
If you get a chance Give a listen to steve marriot formerly of humble pie singing "five long years" (blues)
