I don't know about you, but it's weird because I only just now realized that it sounds kind of happy and victorious by itself on the piano, when it always sounded scary in the game. And kind of the opposite with the World 2 music; in the game it sounds fun and cool, but without the drums in the background it sounds foreboding.
Yeah that one needs more production. also Airship, Bowser, W8 and the Star Power theme are REALLY similar in concept. (I covered all of them and put them into a single tune. it works, i swear. lol!)
Thx for uploading, this vid make me realize how godly the music designer was again. They even needed to put this music in the same channel of jumping or catching coin sound effect meanwhile make it still sounds smooth. Ancient monsters.
They were beasts! And all within 384 KB or so of cartridge data (and SMB1 in 40KB). every sound, graphic, level, boss and gameplay element packed into the size of an optimized JPEG image. And with such a primitive sound processor to boot.
It's a solid OST and I'm so happy that more people are getting into it again. I've got the complete soundtrack [covered and reimagined] on my channel as well, I uploaded it Apr 28, which means we both had M3 on the brain for awhile. :) I gotta look up how to do the colored midi not explosion thing you've got going. that's so fun to look at. great work!!
The airship music is basically a cover of ‘Mars’ from Gustav Holst’s The Planets. John Williams took a lot of inspiration from Holst when composing for Star Wars.

Super Mario Bros 3 was the first Mario game to properly emphasise the importance of the worls. Previously, it was just straight in with just a little picture to preview. By introducing 6 or more levels in each world with a map and it's own theme tune. It ticks all the boxes! This is why I believe Super Mario Bros 3 is the best.
many people know the warp whistle is a jingle from the original legend of zelda, but Sea slide world 3 actually sounds like the fairy fountain or title screen from zelda also
Mario, Pokemon, these Nintendo games smashed it with the soundtracks while being so restricted on hardware/software limitations. So iconic, impossible to forget.
Koji Kondo is an amazing composer, who had a very deep understanding of how to milk the hardware for every drop. It also helps that he's a 'melody first, melody always' type of writer.
I think it's quite spiffy. In all seriousness, I think they'd dig them. Some of these tracks wouldn't sound out of place as a Chopin Waltz in my opinion.
