I like this guy because he actually explained and go through what is does the piece teaches you, explain the jumps the scales the chords. As a rookie pianist I am, I find this video both entertaining and informative.
I think there are three reasons why "The Entertainer" became so played: (1) The movie "The Sting" (1974) which brought the music of Scott Joplin back to the Public's attention (although I prefer the solo piano version of "Solace" over "The Entertainer"), (2) it is in the Public Domain so any can play it, and (3) it was one of the early songs played via computer, On my Commodore 64 computer there was a music program and one of the songs included was "The Entertainer".
Lord Vinheteiro is amazing as musician, but he really shine during interviews and podcast. If you don't understand Portuguese, you are missing at least 90% of his best content
Moonlight Sonata 1st movement is pretty easy, beautiful and harmonic, so it obviously will be overplayed. But, the 3rd movement, which I am learning right now is making me cry😭 Edit: oh it was easy after my teacher explained all the arpeggios.
yo bro u have really good consistency and you are definitely going to make it big. This is only the beginning, and the journey only gets better I appreciate ur work
8:08: Yes, Pachelbel's Canon was written for string quartet, and it is a pain in the neck for the cello: 52 bars of playing the same eight notes. And it is so popular, because it is so simplistic. And if you replace the G in the seventh accord by Em, you get Streets of London. But the most famous canon in existence is Frère Jaques.
They just use that chord progression and a bit of the melody, many other songs actually used the chords due to their compelling movement! :) (Maroon 5 definitely ruined it though and that is coming for someone who basically plays Canon in D every morning, that's how much I love it)
I recently saw a piano in pub, where I was first time. On it there was a note saying "Play whatever you like, but Fur Elise means you gonna clean the toilets."
An easy way to categorize piano pieces into two categories of difficulty: Vinheteiro doesn't need to look at the piano while playing it, or he needs to.
I learnt two simplified versions of The Entertainer with 2 different teachers. I played it pretty smoothly. I would have loved to learn it in the proper stride piano style though.
in my opinion Nocturne in E Flat Major and Clair de Lune are overplayed. Nocturne because a ton of aspiring pianists learn it and Clair de Lune because its just good and the beginning is easy to play.
Vinheteiro aparecendo em grandes canais! Esse músico é um dos orgulhos daqui do Brasil, fugindo de tanta coisa musical podre que temos aqui... Thanks! Hello from Brazil 🇧🇷
Back in the 70s when I was learning, every kid had to get the simplified arrangement of The Entertainer, with just a single bass line plus the melody. Another one that was popular in the late 70s or maybe early 80s was Music Box Dancer, a piano solo piece that got some radio time and some popularity. It seems to not have had as much staying power, but might be one some actual music boxes. At first when I saw the words Prelude in C Major (which I have played), I was thinking of Chopin's Prelude in c minor, which is one of my go-tos when I want to wallop on a piano with some big chords, then finish with a whisper.
The Entertainer - from 1975 - 1979, I was in high school and was in the Symphonic Orchestra, electric piano and percussion. Back then, we didn’t have two different types of groups. When we performed/toured, a small number of us had to learn different styles, and for the Jazz/Ragtime section, a small number of us would perform. The Entertainer was the core piece, and sometimes, depending on the performance time, it was the only piece played in that section. You are right, there is some complications for the pianist playing it. If I recall the rest of the ensemble included Clarinet, Sax, and sometimes Trumpet with the piano. If the venue has an upright piano we would use that with the other ensemble members standing around the piano.
Matthew, I was going through all of them and when he did knuckle song I already thought about #10. That was my first song I could creatively do either part along with the all important Jaws, Close Encounters and Pink Panther themes of my day. Fun fact, only piece that Lord V had to look at was The Entertainer piece. So I guess he’s not a big ragtime guy and didn’t have the song memorized. Love your work ❤
Heart and soul was stolen by Carmichael. According to family, was written by Amy Braynard, my great Aunt who was a commercial organist and composer. She couldn't afford a lawyer to fight for it. We had other songs of hers in our piano bench as kids.
1:04: Cut time isn't necessarily 2/2, it can also be 4/2. Alle breve just means that the halves are the metrum, rather than the quarters as in common time.
I was today old when I learned that the name of the silly piano piece my mother and I used to play when I was about 7 - 8 y.o. is called Heart and Soul. We referred to it as Chopsticks.
The most overplayed piece when I went to school and had piano lessons was the Amélie soundtrack. And the "everyone knows it" piece here is the Flea Waltz (German: Flohwalzer). Similar to the Knuckles song it only uses mainly black keys with a few white ones inbetween.
When I dreamed of learning the piano, the first song I wanted to learn was Canon. I always thought it was one of the most beautiful pieces to be written. I didnt really mind the graduation song, didnt necessarily like it either. But memories ruined the crap out of the song I agree. One song that many disagree with me about is Beautiful in white. I always thought that was a great use of Canon. But nothing will ever be as beautiful as the original score. The one the channel Just Classics posted i can listen too a thousand times LOL My mother always loved fur elis and music box dancer. Both I also love. Lastly, I always wondered why Train's play that song sounded so freaking familiar......... It's because of one of the songs my grandma always played back when i was really young. Heart and soul! Thanks Matthew. This is a really nice way to look at this topic. You're never too good for any music, especially not as a teacher.
Well said. I like the acknowledgment here that some songs deserve to be "overplayed." Unfortunately, much of the professional music world is plagued by elitism. It's up to us to buck the trend! What a silly idea, that we should change what we like because too many other people share our taste.

Fun fact about Heart and Soul: while most people play it as I-vi-IV-V in the key of C, the sheet music I have for the full song (1938 copyright date) is actually I-vi-ii-V in the key of F. The first time I saw it I found it interesting that it uses a 2-5-1 cadence like you would find in jazz instead of the expected 4-5-1.
That is super interesting! Particularly because a ii7 would contain the notes from chord IV so it’s essentially the same but with a different bass note to give a ii7-V-I cadence.

The Prelude in C is the first and probably the most well-known part of the Well-Tempered Clavier. But we have to keep in mind that Bach wrote a prelude and a fugue for each major and minor key, so it's 48 different pieces, which makes the whole opus not overplayed.
Heart and Soul and Hot Cross Buns were the two songs that my choir teacher banned from ever being played on the piano. Any other song she was fine with, just not those
