Problem is, people are buying a brand, not looking for the best or most sensible deal or even the best tech. And inflation only hits prices, not incomes of consumers. Eventually the size of the consumer group who can afford to throw away $1k+ on a new phone every year is going to be negligible...
I agree with the buying a brand argument. However, I think we’re already past that point. Solely-based on my own personal experience, I feel most people whom are spending upwards of $1k on a phone intend to keep it for a few years. There’s always going to be those people who want the latest and greatest and will spend beyond their means to get it but I doubt they are the overwhelming majority.
@@djjaybiggz agreed. I think the minority would include spoiled kids, rich people who can afford it fine(fair enough), and people who want to look rich but give up other parts of their life to get it.
The loss of the mini model is really upsetting. I have bad joints in my hands, and with the XR I would constantly dislocate my fingers trying to hold it, and I’d drop it all the time. I got the 12 mini right at launch, first time I’ve ever done that, and I love it. Best iPhone since the 6S. Fits in my hand. No more dropping it. The fact that phones are getting bigger again is really distressing because I simply cannot use them.
Looks like it's time to switch to Android if Apple is not meeting your needs, plus you will have some extra money in your pocket by not spending as much on a phone.
I'm on #TeamMatt on this one. Austin has a point in terms of Apple's prices for the last 1/2 decade. How ever they can easily afford to take a blow on hardware sales considering their infinite money machine on the app store.
This. I have been thinking of switching to iPhone purely because they hold their value vs even my Pixel phone. But the steep price point is a gigantic hurdle. While Pixel's are getting more expensive, when I trade in a Pixel to Google I get almost as much as I paid for it initially (in good condition of course) whereas with Apple I get $150...not just keeping the price the same but lowering the price will bring more people into the ecosystem. Period. And nobody cares about the use of how ever vs however. Add to the conversation or shutup.
@@sijoabraham5715 I wouldn't say that at all. No eco system is better than the other lmao. Each has their positives and negatives and saying that one is better than the other for everybody is an ignorant statement.
I have to agree with Matt ... average Apple fans aren't upgrading every year because their phone is supported in IOS for so long. They need to entice the people like me that have absolutely no intentions of ever buying an Apple product again, but still respect the company. How might you do that? Take a hit on the sale of the hardware ... like aggressively take a hit on the hardware Pro models at $800 to then get us into the ecosystem where we will either get ads or pay for apps. Take a hit in the short run to get outsiders hooked on the ecosystem. Genius.
I agree with Matt, look at Pixel how much good press they got for the regular pixel at $599, They could easily take a loss on the hardware and make it up in sales and new subscriptions. They are rich enough to try things out like this and come out on top. The direction their going now seems to be insulting more and more people every time I talk to someone about Apple it's always negative. They make amazing stuff but just one single year of them cutting the price by a bit and undercut the competition would be enough to save face.
I agree, the Pixel 6 is a great phone whether base model or pro model and at $599 or $899 I thought it would dominate the Android market. Also, yeah, it seems like everyone is starting to get a negative opinion about Apple, even die hard Apple fans. I think Apple is slowly digging themselves a grave and unless they get a hold of their prices and greediness that grave is just going to get deeper and deeper.
@@footßall That's because Google is shaky and not confident that their phones will sell well and their track record is not on their side. Apple and Samsung are the two biggest smartphone companies and sell tens of millions of phones every year and that's why they are confident enough to sell smartphones over $1000.
Austin has literally fallen so far that he is defending Apples price hike.. Bro, not everyone is you, marques, linus or even Mrwhoseboss (Love them all ofc) 1000 bucks is and already has been a steep asking for a long time. The prices of the phones should not be going over 1000 bucks. Stuff like Samsungs Foldables is okay, because they are so uniquely niche and different, that they justify the price, Apple CAN just take 100 less profit (Even Matt is wrong here with the console comparison, Consoles are sold at 500 and cost like 700, Iphones are the opposite, made at 500 and sold at double that) on the inital sale, and very, very quickly make that back via literally everything else Ios/Apple Related. Hell, if you are really that worried people wouldn't spend, include a 100 dollar Apple Gift Card with purchases of the device, people will use it on the phone to do a bunch of different subscriptions, and then, oh no, the 100 bucks is out, but they really love Apple Music, oh shit, you now have a new Apple Music subscriber for lord knows how long. Something to consider Austin, with your point, is that you fail to understand the everyday person. You are talking from the perspective of "Mr big influencer who gets sent the products for free then uses the ad rev/sponser money to buy a personal one" Yes, After the 1000 dollar phones became a thing, everyone walked around with them. But how many people ACTUALLY BOUGHT THEM at that upfront cost? I can damn near say for sure, that about 95% of those people are on phone plans with whatever U.S/Canadian carriers you have (Here in Australia we have Optus/Telstra as the main 2) Where they are paying say 50-60 bucks a month for the phone and about the same on a plan. They aren't paying 1000 bucks upfront. They are paying that over the course of 2-3 YEARS with the phone plans. That 100 dollars ABSOULUTELY makes a huge difference for the rest of us "Normal" people, as that cost that gets shuffled into our plans is truly the difference of "Can i afford this phone monthly or not" and if the answer is no, i'm not going to settle for a lesser Iphone, i'll just buy Samsung's "Pro" "Max" "Note" "Ultra" phone when they keep it at 1000. I'll get better performance and specs over a base Iphone 14. Legit, With how much Apple is a "Eco System" you'd think Tim Cook would have worked out, that if he dropped the prices on all his phones, say the highest was 800, then 700, then 600, then 500. As crazy as that might sound, Iphone would literally be the greatest phones to buy, you wouldn't be able to convince people otherwise. And now that they are so much more affordable for many, you now have a much. much larger consumer base to sell Apple Music subs to, Airpods, Macs, Ipads, etc etc Samsung doesn't have that, sure they have thier Ear buds, but, you don't need em, any bluetooth buds will do, most will work idenitcally to the samsung ones, Airpods aren't like that tho, use any other buds and you are in for a HUGELY inferior experience. Once you get that inital sale, you can easily get people into the eco system. Point is, 1100 dollar phone is stupid, Austin is wrong and Matt is right
Apple used to make good, high quality devices, which were relatively easy to upgrade/fix, it's a long gone and forgotten by them line of... iPods. I love my iPod video to death, once I have enough surplus funds I'll get a flash kit and a new front for that old boy, just to keep it alive as long as I can. I wish they didn't forget about it on the 20th anniversary, but all the hope is gone. Good thing that there's still a growing community of modders, keeping those beautiful beasts alive and well.
Last year I had a 12 pro max. After hearing the rumors that the mini might be discontinued I went and sold my 12 promax and got a 13 mini. Apart from abysmal battery life it’s a great phone. This also showed me that I never used any of the “pro“ features.
Heh, you think your battery life is bad? I’m still using the 12 mini I didn’t get the 13 mini because battery life was the only upgrade I wanted a promotion display or under screen fingerprint reader or SOMETHING but it was the same phone basically
The reason I’m still with iOS is because my wife and her whole family use iOS and we like to FaceTime. In addition, i have several other iOS devices and , as a result, I am invested in the ecosystem. I’m perfectly fine with the base model versions of the new phones.
They’re selling $1000 phones that they make for $400, but it’s absurd for them to take a hit on the price for one year to get more people in the ecosystem? C’mon Austin!
Austin is wrong. Phones should not be over $1000. Apple is literally the highest valued company of all time and should be able to take the small hit to sell more phones and ultimately make more money.
They do have a less than 1000 dollar phone......its called the iPhone.....iPhone pro has more features and the latest and greatest therefore costs more....Samsung s22 ultra starts at almost 1200.....they're premium devices....a luxury....too expensive? That's fine get the non pro/ultra....
They tried, it flopped. iPhones are seen as a status symbol instead of what it is... a phone. That's why the cheaper iPhone 5c were a flop, nobody was buying them. If you don't have the high end model, then you're lesser than your friend who does.
wow Austin, jeez, you're argument for raising the price of the iphone is, they can and they're great for making a ton of money. I mean you're right, they can and people will buy them, but Matt has a point it would be a great image boost to just keep the same price (and still make a ton of money) It doesn'treally feel like an apple move, but this is just weird to be so adamant about that being a bad idea because they should just make more money.
The tech stagnation is real for me. I’m using a 7 Plus and it basically does everything I need from a phone. Haven’t seen any new and must have feature for years now.
So . . . Are we all just ignore Matt's Eyelid pimple? I am sorry, I meant to say eyelid pimple, I'm sorry, I meant to say eyelid pimple. Okay but for serious now, what is with the eyelid pimple? They’ve been running the “same phone different year + 1 or 2 upgrades” business model for ages. Especially with iOS. Apple’s marketing is the foundation of their company. Tbh they only care about making leaps for everything else they sell besides the iPhone.
The stat I’d like to see is…who actually buys a brand new iPhone 100% out of pocket vs who just has the apple upgrade program where you only have to pay for half of it before trading it pack in for the next new one?
I agree mostly with Austin on this one. In my area, most people don’t buy the Pro iPhones for the features it brings, they buy it for the “flex”, screen size and/or thinking it will boost their status. I think the normal Max will help with this, because less will splurge for the Pro with features they don’t need. There will still be many that can’t afford the highest iPhone but buy it anyway to have the 3 camera design and new i notch thing. The $100 price hike doesn’t make a difference to people who are already spending more than they can afford. The Pro was designed for people who can utilize the features but I think it’s turned into a status thing. Which is a bummer. So many don’t need the extra features and would be perfectly fine with the base phone, or even a 13, 12, 11 or SE. Anyway, it was really interesting to hear your take on the upcoming 14. I really wish they wouldn’t take away the Mini, it seems like the perfect size for a phone.
I switched from all time Android user to iPhone 13 mini specifically for the form factor. So happy with it. Will stay with it until it runs out of support.
android/under the display fingerprint sensors are not secure at all for making payments. on the iphones, you could use the fingerprints for a secure way of paying. and we've all known that apple's finger print sensors, and face ID have been almost the most secure way of getting into your phone, and also using for payment purposes.
Definitely agree with Matt. They have been over charging for phones for all of these years. UA-camrs have been saying it’s because of marketing for years. So if that’s the case why not cut down on the marketing to sell the phones at the same prices. We all know apple is overcharging their customers but they will keep coming back either way. If they make a great mid range phone with all the features they would chip away at android users too. In my opinion.
There is one issue they need to sort out losing a sound problem every iPhone I’ve ever heard always loses sound after updating or something it really wind me up
That is not an issue, I’ve had nearly every model iPhone and always run current operating systems and this has never once happened to me. If every iPhone you’ve owned has done this like you claim, you are the one doing it. I’ve sold phones for 7+ years and this is NOT an issue.
Oh really? Because I sure do need it, I am on an iPhone 11, and I need something new to upgrade to, especially something smaller like the iPhone 14 Pro

Those older chips still outrun anything in the Android market. Besides, the standard 14s will probably come with the 5 GPU core SoCs featured in the 13 pro models.
@@vernearase3044 You are missing my point, my point is older gen chips when put in newer shells, their price should not be crazy hiked and be less than the newer chips in newer shells! Performance wise may be ofc than androids, still they will be inferior to newer apple SoCs.
@@heavyDriver320 Oh ... are they hiking the price of non-pro models? I didn't catch that part. Would make sense considering supply constraints and inflation. IAC, the non-pro iPhones will probably come with last year's Pro level SoCs - the A15 bionics with 5 GPU cores instead of the 4 GPU cores on the standard iPhone 13s.
@@vernearase3044 I mean if the pro models are only going to see new design and new SoCs, then their price will increase naturally, but the non pro 14s with prev gen SoCs and essentially same design as well with the notch, why should they increase their price over present 13s. And they use the same designs for probly half a decade so even if they don't increase the price for pro 14s also, they still will make great profits as it will make new models more attractive.
@@vernearase3044 Also if they would just replace the SEs with the minis instead of just removing the mini lineup, that would make things even more attractive, but they ofc don't want to do that sadly. Btw Im one of those people who still like to have touch id.. 😏
Hopefully the mini line is what the new SE will look like. I very much doubt that apple is going to waste all those extra chassis they have lying around right now.

So I have the 13 pro max and honestly it is such a good phone imo that I don’t think I will upgrade for years which is something I have not done in a long while
Honest to god feel the same about my 12 pro max. Honestly don’t see a single difference from the new ones and it’s a personal favorite I’ve owned. Phone before this was the 11 pro max and there was a difference between those, but it’s just back to “minor” differences on newer iPhones since the 12 pro max
Austin made a very good point regarding inflation. Once you factor that in $100 price jump after 5 years actually seems reasonable. If this was like $50 every year I think Matt’s argument would have more traction.
Austin touched on this but didn't close the loop. The iPhone Pro with a 48 MP main sensor will allow hybrid zoom up to 30x. I have the S22 (just the regular one) and the iPhone Pro will basically catch up to the regular S22 in zoom. It's usable up to 10x which comes in really handy sometimes! How much cheaper is an S22? or S22 Plus if you need the battery life? Apple ecosystem vs. Samsung phones that are better and less expensive is what it boils down to. Then there's the S22 Ultra getting a 200 MP sensor... S22 Ultra will maintain a comfortable lead in specs over EVERY iPhone in my opinion even without the upgrade.
I'm thinking that the next iPhone SE will use the Mini chassis. The SE has used the same iPhone 8 body twice now, and I'm sure they have ran their course. That and the 4.7" display is long in the tooth. That will also give them the "justification" to hike the price up on the next SE model as well, which I have no doubt they will do.
Pretty much the story of every iphone. With the camera improvements of the 14 pro series, the 120hz display, along with the brightness improvements 5G and the larger battery, there's really not much reason to hold out for the 14

Austin, the price of making the phone is a small fraction of the cost of the phone. . They charge for the design and the ecosystem. Sure they bring some new iOS features everyy 1 or 2 years but most of the times people can't use or won't use the feature. Like example 4k recording or cinematic on a 64 gb model . So it is a scam. They wanted to make more and more money. So the price hike is not acceptable. In fact they should have charged less since they save money on not including chargers and they were able to save money on space in shipping with smaller boxes. Plus they were able to sell charging accesories
I am on Team Matt, sell it at a lower cost you may even get Android users to pick it up as a secondary decive to access iPhone ecosystem features, they can make up the loss with accessories lol
Nope - the pro will probably go up $100 and it's entirely justified. TSMC is increasing their fabbing prices, and the iPhone Pros will feature a new camera system. Whereas in the past they might've made up for it in app sales, everyone and his sister is suing Apple to bring down their commission on sales, or to allow third party stores where they won't be getting any commission at all. Matt is obviously _not_ a stockholder - _Apple should sell their phones cheaply to prove what nice guys the are._ Unlike every _other_ phone manufacturer. Parts are expensive and in short supply - you will probably have to make your nut on a potentially smaller number of unit sales, at least while the semiconductor market shortages remain.
They fact they removed the mini and replaced it with a massive and heavy dingus phone upsets me. It would’ve made sense for a mini and a max cause then you got normal, big, and small base models and then big and normal pro models. Also, the price jump is upsetting, I could get a Pixel 6 pro for $899 while if I wanted a 14 pro I would have to fork up $200 more.
Austin is 100% right, people who buy iphones either pay whatever it is no matter what or just get them 2nd hand, either way Apple increasing prices wont make them lose any sales
Apple can not lower the price just because they have money, that’s not how share holders work. That and inflation is something that’s impossible to write off as it’s the literally currency that buys everything that is the issue
There is no good excuse for another price hike. The last several have already been unnecessary. Not to mention the price hike alongside accessories removal from the last Gen which essentially equalled $200 increase. So 2020-2021 we saw +$200 on the iPhones and they want another +$100 in 2021-2022? Mind you, both of these increases were for devices that were near identical to the previous year? Absolutely not. I'd be okay with the price hikes if they actually provided us with a new product, but they don't. This is 100% why I left apple. Even as a life long Apple fanboy, I had to leave because they have been scamming us since the iPhone X.
imagine they actually discontinued the mini because they wont have any chassis for the s.e. .they used the 5s chasis for the first one..the 8 for the second one..and the mini for the future..until a different form factor again
I don't think iphone 14 will bring any much upgrade compared to 11,12 and 13. If there's gonna be a touch id, it should either be on the power button or under the display.
For people who think iPhone is meant to drop their price on the new iPhone, that's a feasible but impossible idea, because it's never happened before. Truth is, you can only buy what you can buy. Plus, certain Android phones perform alright.
Most androids are good if you’re getting higher end ones like Samsung’s Galaxy S22 or Google’s Pixel 6 Pro, hell even some of the Chinese brands like Oppo are good.
Yes you tell the different, every year phone is faster, has better cameras due to better processor, they also jump from 60hz to 120,this year iphone will be even faster then 13pro
I use the iPhone 12 mini and I plan on keeping it for as long as it’s useable. I love it to hell and my partner has a 12 pro max which I just can’t use. I don’t even have especially small hands, I just don’t like the balance of such a heavy and large phone in my hands. I use my phone 1 handed sometimes and I feel like that’s impossible with these large phones.
To be fair to austin argument Apple was the first company to charge 600 for a phone with the iph 6 when it came out. And jump to a 100 with the X . So yeah they didnt price their phones on inflation back then, because back then most of the phones were under a 100 mark.
The mobile ecosystem has pretty much solidified by now, you not gonna bring Android users into iOS by selling the pro model for $100 cheaper. If they ever gonna convert they probably go for the non-pro models first
Actually since 2017 they cut around $50 worth of assessories from the box. So a $100 price jump really seems excessive

@@footßall yes absolutely right.
@@footßall That's because Google is shaky and not confident that their phones will sell well and their track record is not on their side. Apple and Samsung are the two biggest smartphone companies and sell tens of millions of phones every year and that's why they are confident enough to sell smartphones over $1000.
where i am from, nobody even talks about the pixel, and due to its buggy nature, the value of the same is down in the dumps.
And now that they are so much more affordable for many, you now have a much. much larger consumer base to sell Apple Music subs to, Airpods, Macs, Ipads, etc etc
Samsung doesn't have that, sure they have thier Ear buds, but, you don't need em, any bluetooth buds will do, most will work idenitcally to the samsung ones, Airpods aren't like that tho, use any other buds and you are in for a HUGELY inferior experience. Once you get that inital sale, you can easily get people into the eco system.
Point is, 1100 dollar phone is stupid, Austin is wrong and Matt is right
Man doing a full on rant.
Absolutely based opinion right here
Apple used to make good, high quality devices, which were relatively easy to upgrade/fix, it's a long gone and forgotten by them line of... iPods. I love my iPod video to death, once I have enough surplus funds I'll get a flash kit and a new front for that old boy, just to keep it alive as long as I can. I wish they didn't forget about it on the 20th anniversary, but all the hope is gone. Good thing that there's still a growing community of modders, keeping those beautiful beasts alive and well.
true, in my country you'd be able to buy a small motorcycle or a full spec gaming laptop for how much the iphone goes

Austin is wrong. Phones should not be over $1000. Apple is literally the highest valued company of all time and should be able to take the small hit to sell more phones and ultimately make more money.

Next: iPhone 15 Pro Max Flex
This is like a meeting of the Apple Kool-Aid drinkers Klub.

They should bring the price down, specially with older chips inside new shells!

I'm not a big Apple fan, but I agree that's one of the best places for a fingerprint reader, as it works great on my Moto G Power 2020 being under the Moto M logo on the back of the phone even with slightly wet/sweaty fingers.
Austin is right, whether or not I like it is a different story
Matt speaks like a man child of idealism.
They fact they removed the mini and replaced it with a massive and heavy dingus phone upsets me. It would’ve made sense for a mini and a max cause then you got normal, big, and small base models and then big and normal pro models. Also, the price jump is upsetting, I could get a Pixel 6 pro for $899 while if I wanted a 14 pro I would have to fork up $200 more.
spending $1000 to check you Twitter and IG is crazy

To be fair to austin argument Apple was the first company to charge 600 for a phone with the iph 6 when it came out. And jump to a 100 with the X . So yeah they didnt price their phones on inflation back then, because back then most of the phones were under a 100 mark.
