  • Columnist Peter Hitchens has criticised his “fellow members of the chattering classes” for not having challenged lockdown more strongly.
Speaking with talkRADIO’s Mike Graham, he said: “At a time when human freedom was under direct attack by the government, they sat around in their back gardens drinking chilled Chablis and did nothing whatsoever to defend liberty.”

I've got a lot of time for Peter Hitchens and he's been ahead of the game with what is happening for at least twenty years, but he's being disingenuous about many of the frustrations voiced at him. In large part, the frustrations were not that he had a vaccine, which he's perfectly at liberty to do. But he rather declared surrender on behalf of the rest of us too! You can give up Peter. I won't.

Shame that you don't understand what's been going on.
As I work in the Health sector this may explain. Firstly, Covid is easier to transmit and has a stronger viral load. It had a strong start on Flu as it started in the uk around Feb/March. Covid had no natural enemy and went into the community. 2019 of course a lot of the vulnerable had the Flu vaccine which helps to dampen infection.
In 2020 the Flu Vaccine (in October) was taken up by 2 or 3 times the amount of candidates plus others over 50
Obviously, Flu took a vaccine hammering but Covid, being the stronger strain took over. Hope that helps.

I do like Peter Hitchens a lot, but I question his opinion on "tower blocks". I live in a tall one in the centre of a capital city. Among its advantages, not apparent to anyone who has not experienced this lifestyle, is that there are several hours extra daylight each day (half in the morining and half in the evening). My street is six lanes and one of the busiest, but up here the sound is attenuated. The view can be studied for hours, days, years and continues to offer up new discoveries. From my balcony I can look out from the centre of a busy metropolis into the surrounding countryside and even watch a farm of wind turbines turning in the distance. The British are prejudiced against high rise because mainly they were used as social dustbins for impoverished and troubled families. The occupants gave those places their reputation. The reality can be so much more. The one drawback is waiting for an elevator.

It's been a delay agenda for sometime. They've delayed the already looming triple crash of property, stocks, and bonds. Now they're adding to the magnitude of that collapse. Government backed mortgages at 95% LTV herald the coming descent. Commercial property, the refuge of pension funds seeking returns to pay pensions, securely, look in peril given the bankruptcies and retailers abandoning premises. Those annuities, allegedly guaranteed, don't look so safe, unless the funds play robbing Peter to pay Paul and monumentally screw the young. If I were young I'd be baying for blood over the past years and future ones where everything looks screwed after prior generations greed at inflating prices for their own benefit without a thought for anyone else. Eighties pension contribution holidays. The City forcing property cash ins by retailers. Utility giveaways. Council house giveaways. And more. All to hold up the illusion a free market economy works. It's alright Peter Hitchins blaming Joe public for allowing these restrictions but what were we supposed to do ? Not all of us are as articulate and able to speak out like Peter Hitchens. Pubs et al close because if they didn't they would be fined and run out of business. So what did you do Peter ? I don't recall you marching outside police stations.

I have spent the last year of telling my state paid colleagues that this is all nuts and flies in the face of the risk managament and scientific scrutiny that they are expected to extole in their day-to-day business. Only to be faced with "i'm alright, jack". I get paid well north of 50k a year to manage state nuclear liablilties, and all i can see, from the way society and the course of freedoms are going and whether what I do has any grand point, the only of redemable least-llvalue to me is to take myself to a lay-by and blow my fucking brains out.
