  • Kangaroos are able to intentionally communicate with people and "ask for help", a study has found. The research challenges the notion that only domesticated animals display this behaviour, co-authors from the UK and Australia tell the BBC.

Just to explain to people wondering why this is such a serious and profound experiment is that normally the behavior for non-domesticated animals is to continue attempts at retrieving the treat without the aid of the experimenter.
Wolves, for example, will *not* look at the experimenter during this altercation and will instead choose to claw at the box until they can somehow retrieve the treat (even if that effort is futile).
Dogs, and other domesticated animals, on the other hand, will look *to* the experimenter for help very suddenly, after facing even minimal residence.
It’s a fascinating distinction and the fact that kangaroos display this behavior is indicative of a more domesticated state and maybe a more sophisticated cohabitation between our species.

@@NorthPoleJeff Agreed. Average Alsatians are as intelligent as a 9 year old human.
Domestication parallels the effects of William's Syndrome - a genetic condition that gives people rounded faces and a proclivity towards niceness.
For context to this story; I used to have an attic room. My step father used to sneak in and poke around while I was out for whatever reason. One day there was a big wasp at the window, exhausted.
I took it outside, gave it some crushed cherry and strawberries.
Turned out it was a queen (can't sting), and that wasps apparently remember faces and communicate to the other wasps to say that something isn't a threat. My stepfather tried to squish one with a news paper - and that's how I ended up living in a wasps nest without getting stung, while having my privacy guarded by a small insect airforce lol
I tell ya though mate, nothing scarier than waking up with wasps crawling on you and buzzing by your ears, except maybe navigating a room full of wasps in the dark (lightbulb blew) lol
My mum has befriended a pidgeon but she's afraid of birds. Percival, as he's been named tries to get in the house and wants to sit on her feet.
A hawk had him - he's fine now, just clunky flying because he's missing a few tail feathers. He's there waiting fo us to feed him every day, might have been someone's pet once.
Your point stands - life is clever. Friendship is predicated on trust; which is effectively safety plus time.
All the best, take care Jeff! (:

I think this is true for a lot of animals, particularly mammals. My garden birds tell me where they want their food placed, by looking and me then the area of the garden they feel safe visiting.
For as long as I can remember, I've had a lot more empathy for other animals than anyone I've met. I seem to 'get' animals where most do not, whether as a result of being a very empathetic person or not.
What shocks me is the surprise that people have when they exclaim that "These animals can communicate with us" or "They care for each other" or "they're smart". Yes, of course to all three.
We just don't take the time to understand them, which is sad. We also judge their intelligence based on our own measurements (IQ) - who'd have thought that we'd come out on top in OUR OWN tests!
How well would you survive in a lion's habitat, or a tuna's, or a penguin's? Would you be SMART enough?!
I'm not sure how I feel about the video, to be honest.

02:01 They can't be stupid if they're able to responsibly raise their offspring (unlike many humans who just leave their kids to their own devices). It requires an appreciable level of intelligence and social awareness to do that.

I've seen them and wallabies in the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, SC, but I admit it never occurred to me to talk to them - it was already a tad difficult for me to shoot stills of them with my camera without disturbing their space or peace.
