    Calibration changing when changing brightness, is likely because as you increase brightness, relatively more White sub-pixel output is added. This would not be an issue with QD-OLED panels since they have no White sub-pixels. Too bad those have such a strange pixel arrangement. For the desktop a normal RGB stripe OLED would be the best option.

    This monitor uses a MicroLens Array panel, which is a new W-OLED panel type being introduced this year on the G3 TV line-up. It's not exactly the same tech as the C2 42". MLA allows for more light to pass through even with smaller pixel aperture ratios thanks to a coating made of convex microlenses with a ratio of a lens per single pixel group.

    • @isakh8565
      @isakh8565 Рік тому +41

      It's supposed to increase brightness by 60% or so, but seems like it hasn't improved the brightness much on this monitor compared to the previous gen LG oled TV's.
      Maybe they're driving the panel less hard and using the advantages of MLA to just match previous oled TV's brightness, thus increasing the time it takes to burn-in?

Without Micro Lens Array this 27 inch OLED would be to dim and probably would not have made it to market.

  • @maugre316
    @maugre316 Рік тому +1

    Yes, I have been waiting for this review! The low brightness I can cope with as my place doesn't get much direct sunlight. What I would like is a 32" 4K version; as a tftcentral article notes, 32" 4K at 125% scaling is equivalent to 3072x1728 but with better pixel density (around 140ppi) at the same text size as 27" 1440p. For me that's a good size for productivity and movies while not being massively demanding on a top-end GPU for gaming. But I have to say, the 27GR95QE is highly tempting (if it's ever available in UK).
    Although worth noting the limit on UHBR 13.5 (as on RDNA3) at 4K is around 229Hz so UHBR 20 will be required for 240Hz. However, the 4K 144Hz OLED panel that AUO is reportedly working on should be fine on UHBR 10.

    Also, I've seen reports that if you use "vivid" mode in HDR in this one, the brightness (and saturation) increases more like the advertised one, but not in all % white windows. Kinda makes some trade off, but it probably suits better for some "i need to get blinded by this monitor to enjoy everything" people.

    This would be my dream monitor if it wasn't the price and the coating, I really hate matte, they should have made options to chose between semi-glossy and matte, but the thing is being matte at least we can rip it off and make it full glossy.
    ps: But I'm guessing a Samsung QD-OLED of 240hz will be a whole different beast with the color volume difference by both not using just a normal LCD like color filter and no use of the extra white sub-pixel.

      Burn in is very, very easy to avoid. Just use a screen saver or some shit so when literally nothing changes on the screen it doesn't stay on the same image for hours.
      Not to mention if you use something like lg companion, it also reduces consumption by a lot.

      @@vgamedude12 I am a bit conflicted about the issue.
      Matt coating is an "all rounder" in case you use your panel in both lit and dim environments. Sounds good.
      Only OLED really only shines in dim environments due to it being low brightness.
      So why make it Matt? Because in stores, there is A LOT of light, and we (the enthusiast crowd that watches youtube content to know every detail of a product) are an insanely niche minority (probably well under 0.5%) of customers this product is targeting.
      That would be my best guess. (Apple has been using glossy displays for a while but I believe mini led is far brighter than OLED, so its not exactly apples to apples.... hehe, apples to apples).

    • @vgamedude12
      @vgamedude12 Рік тому +2

      @lrmcatspaw1 To me glossy is the all around coating. If a display is glossy you can also easily make it matte with aftermarket films you can apply to the screen. If the screen is matte you're basically stuck with it.
      Proper anti glare glossy coatings allow fine usage in lit conditions. After all many tvs are usable in such, and even outdoor focused televisions use glossy panels. You just need a decent glossy coating.
      Monitors are the only market where matte is the norm, and not just the norm but usually the only option.

Could have bought two of these 27"1440p240hz OLED for the price but I needed my next logical upgrade to be a 42" 4k120 16:9 coming from an AW3821DW (for work and mild gaming, I couldn't stomach the downgrade in real estate from the AW3423DW even though it was gorgeous QD-OLED like my 65" A95K TV).

      Don’t forget to put TV into HGIG mode and then use windows HDR calibration software from the windows store (free) to liturally calibrate the first setting to 0 and the next two settings MUST be set to your TV peak brightness in nits, so for my LG I set them both to 800 and save. This will correctly colour map using HGIG with both auto HDR and normal HDR but in came im you must calibrate the game to 1000 nits, like Assassins Creed has a setting for 800 nits, but HGIG will look bad as the game is double limited HDR - so out at 1000 and paper white to default (or personal taste).

    Strongly considering this monitor. Seems to be great overall for what I want. A mix of a good 1440p screen, ideal for competitive games and also possibly hdr single player games if I don’t feel like playing those on my tv. But just the response times of OLED with high refresh rate is what I care about way more than perfect hdr. Might as well play on a big tv for that.

      I just bought it. I was concerned about brightness and the matte finish. When I plugged it in I was a bit disappointed by the brightness but I'm not sure how it comes out of the box but when I switched to the appropriate picture modes I was relieved to see it took a few moments but eventually got to full brightness. As the review says, the matte is all about preference but I agree it still gives you the incredible contrast and blacks that I wanted from my oled, as an owner of an LG CX OLED TV. Not disappointed at all. I think it was the right choice. Overall I think it definitely feels like a worthwhile upgrade, given the price over the very capable $600 1440p ips panel I've had for several years and loved. It's subjective but I do think its basically twice as good as ips for image quality and pure wow factor. You come into the room and see it and its like looking through a window. I'm going to try it on Valorant tonight and see what the refresh rates feel like. I don't think I'll be disappointed. If you can wait for the upcoming sales, I think this will be available for a really good price. Highly recommend it.

    The problem I see with this monitor is because of the burn in risk and the sub pixel layout, it's really only designed to be used as a gaming monitor, and as a pure gaming monitor, I think the AW3423DW(F) is just a better choice for most gamers. There are some advantages to the LG, but overall, for gaming specifically, I just feel like the Alienware is the better buy.

      Not really, the Alienware is an Ultrawide so even at 1440p you need more GPU horsepower than you do for a 2560x1440 display.

    Another thing to keep in mind is that LG's hardware calibration enabled image modes, as well the factory tuned sRGB mode, come with a significant processing latency penalty as per Rtings testing, which makes them really suboptimal for gaming.
    I don't know if it's standard behaviour (at least for sRGB mode) for WCG displays (I really do hope it's not), but for me this is a huge concern since I'm very sensitive to both color accuracy and input lag, and the main reason I was extremely disappointed after getting incredibly enthusiastic about LG's model.
    I wonder if Alienware models show the same behaviour with their sRGB (Creator) image modes.

    Cool to see normal formats showing. Can hope MS updates for different sub-pixel layout though. I appreciate matte coating, it's simply superior for monitor, glossy is just bad to look at.
    I'll be waiting for Samsung to release 4K 240Hz model if I'm going OLED and high tier monitor at this point.
