  • A true spring ephemeral, the Dimpled Trout Lily, Erythronium umbilicatum ssp. umbilicatum usually appears by the first week of February in the Florida Panhandle & South Georgia, with peak bloom in the second and third week of February. In Florida, it is a state-listed Endangered species and only occurs in three panhandle counties.
The speckled leaves give Trout Lilies their common name, resembling the speckled sides of a trout. Their nodding, lemon-yellow flowers only open mid-morning once the sun is strong and close back up by late afternoon. On overcast days, they may not open at all.
Check out Wolf Creek Trout Lily Preserve in Grady County, Georgia, to witness an astounding population of these spring beauties. This preserve protects the largest known population of Dimpled Trout Lilies. Many members of our FNPS Magnolia Chapter are responsible for establishing, protecting, and maintaining this incredible property. You can find the Preserve Facebook page or check out their website at WolfCreekTroutLilyPreserve.org for directions and details.
