Fully agree! I don't like painting quick either, I only get to paint on the weekends so sometimes i put in 16+ hours, sometimes I don't paint at all that week. Takes months to paint a unit, but that's the pace that works for me.
I’m too engrained with the idea of “you can get it done fast, or you can get it done right” to really go for speed painting. Not that it’s a bad style, but it’s not for me. Even my eyes always tell me I enjoy slowburn paint jobs more.
It is totally ok. Speedpainting makes me nervous every time I want to record it. I rather sit on a model a few days if not weeks and do it slow. Airbrush helps to reduce the time but apart from that every speed painted model is there because i wanted it to be done quick and quick isn't always good.
Not completely succeeding might well help us more, than a seemingly flawless process. Thank you for keeping that in and talking about the mental side of the hobby.
Said it before and I'll say it again; absolutely love these 'full process' videos, including kitbashing and experimentation, etc. Really liked how you were able to get through a full squad in this one, with little showcases for each model! Heavy Flamer guy rocks. Really appreciate the way you talked through the process, especially without a test model; the disaster was disappointing, I'm sure, but the way you pushed through and dealt with that problem is I think just as much a part of the process as the techniques, and definitely very inspirational. I think stuff like that really helps with learning/teaching the fundamental skills of the hobby, and is one of the things that keeps me coming back to these videos and watching every single one, regardless of how applicable a particular scheme is. It complements the recent focused technical videos really well, getting deep dives on both the hobby holistically and on specific aspects. The revelation at the end, regarding speed painting, I think is a really nice thing to share. I think especially within the space of painters making content for youtube, that's a unique and valuable perspective. I think I broadly align with that viewpoint, and your attempts at painting more efficiently are really useful for ways to paint well but still get things done, but so is your candour here. It's really validating to hear. I think as a content creator, that obviously changes the dynamics of that, but I think the videos you make are the best when it's a project you've especially enjoyed. PS; Is there a good place to share images of my current project with you, Henry? Its the Aquilons I mentioned on a previous vid, and I'm really happy with how they're coming along. No hard feelings whatsoever if that's not something you're interested in! (Oops, just got to the point in the video where you mention the discord! I should track that down)
I love the look of these slightly smaller heads on the 40k DG bodies, they look absolutely BRUTAL. Might be the best proportions I've seen for marines yet!
I find your kitbash videos, no matter if small or big, are my favorite videos. Its my biggest passion in the hobby and watching+listening to your ideas is such a motivation to do more of them myself. Live it
Man that flamer is so cool! I love the conversions you did and honestly it's nice you went into your mistakes; I think content creators can give off this aura of invincibility sometimes and admitting you don't like something you did and what things you learned is humanizing. Awesome video, glad I found this channel!
There's something so satisfying about watching the confidence in your kitbashing, happily just chopping bits up and experimenting with all sorts. I've never done any kitbashing but this video in particular's likely to make me start - I love the idea and lore behind the Death Guard but there's a lot about the way they look that I thought could be more to my taste. Awesome vid and great result!
The rotten wood is also on the bolter of the 2nd ed plastic Death Guard mini's that coincidently I am painting right now. I agree, it fits the Death Guard really well.
The 2nd edition DG mini's really sell the idea that they are rotting and in constant pain, but that's the impression I'm given I haven't handled them in eons I could be misremembering or exaggerating the memory of them!
Love this different take to the same scheme from the last time you painted Death guard. The darker shades are great and really different to the yellow green I usually go with
Really like how the pale fleshy bits came out, especially as a contrast to the dark armor. Keeping them pale, makes them less cartoony, which I think was your goal.
I'd love to see your take on the bullgoar ravagers. Maybe trying for two or three different colours of hair amongst the squad could be an interesting angle for the video, if painting all that fur on a efficient manner and still keeping them interesting looking...
I’m so glad you reflected on your approach to painting at the end of the video. I love your videos and after watching lots of them, it’s clear to me Henry that you are too creative to be a speed painter. You love the details and creating paint and colour recipes to get the look down that you like! You said it your self, you were texting people because you were so happy with the results of your paint scheme. That right there IS the hobby for you. These are 100% your strengths and reasons why you enjoy this hobby and you should stick to that, in my opinion. Plus they make for a hell of a video. Also - I think you would paint an amazing raptor marine. Would love to see that one day. Cheers.
Cheers Henry. I really appreciate that you talk candidly about mistakes, as well as admitting that you just don't like a certain style of painting. That's what's great about the hobby, everyone can engage with it the way they like. Looking forward to the next video, have a good one.
I absolutely love these models, and you have done such an incredible job on them. My favourite by far, though, is the flamer dude. He looks exactly how I imagine a death guard should look. Amazing work. Thanks for the video. I will be referring to it lots to improve my Death Guard.
oh this is so beautiful. tweaking the loudout/build with a light kitbash...... prime black, down spray white. standard schemes, highlights, mouldy metals, details, light varnish touches. so inspiring. my box arrives in the morning and im paint shopping at lunchtime. no airbrush, not worried now.

@cultofpaint It would be great to see Steel Legion birthed from a Death Korp kit as originally in the Armaggedon campaign, the Death Korp was birthed from the old skoll Steel Legion models. And IMO Steel Legion are way cooler. I just prefer Mechanised Infantry.
i absolutely love you conversion. stylistically i do like the new death guard models, but a lot of times i'd love them to more darker and serious. your improvements hit the nail on the head. don't know why i didn't think of just clipping all that funny stuff off :D also great paintjob. I wanna try some off-white dirty colour scheme for mine but all the other stuff i might be copying partially :) thanks for the great video

Also, I know Andy did a 158th Siege Regiment video already, but would love to see your take on the Veteran Guardsmen in the 143rd grey/blue colours.
These look great Henry. I will be painting mine up as Iron warriors. I think nurgle and corrosion on iron warriors will look great. Thank you for the inspiration on certain elements

Late to the party though I am, I'd absolutely love to see your take on a tau pathfinders/hunter cadre kill team. Some of the more unusual septs have quite cool and unique colour schemes that may be fun to play with.
As I've got older I've found it harder and harder not to kitbash; it's another layer of imagination that can really elevate miniatures and make them feel truly personal. I wasn't thrilled with the KT box reveal - I don't think the terrain looks good and I'm numb to anything Primaris, but these Death Guard look great. Personally, I like your sorceror best - that upturned hand just emanates "Norwegian Black Metal" energy that I find irresistible!
I think its so important between this and the warhawks video that you're talking about how to kitbash and make the models you want from the plastic canvas. The amount of posts I see that that feel like you *have* to paint it box art or even that you're locked into the instructions and you can't do basic headswaps and arm changes. I'm always on the fence about nurgle because I find them almost a little too gross. I think it works in AOS more but these have me really tempted to pick up a team
I love watching you you guys kitbash. Have you considered turning the space marine half to a Death Watch Kill team? Would be awesome watching you kitbash each of them into whatever chapters they originated from.
It's interesting to see what a different result you can get with a bit of conversion and a more grim dark scheme. I've been painting these myself recently, they certainly aren't quick to paint with all the details, although some of the rest of the range take it to the next level, I'm not sure if i will ever have the energy to finish painting the biologus putrifier 😂 .
@@cultofpaint yeah, you can always tell a ranges they had fun making when they have a huge number of minor characters (see also sisters and genestealer cults)
Really enjoy this style of video. I can't believe it was 36 minutes long! It certainly didn't feel it. Great to see you revisiting 40k Deathguard! How did you find this scheme compared to your previous "army painting" attempt? I'll have to put some pictures up on the discord of my on going Deathguard project following elements of your previous scheme, maybe even some WIP of the rest of it when I pick it up again. Any how, the weathering came out brilliantly, the Verdigris and subtle streaking in particular.
I have seen in on of your vids you have the abteilung 502 sepia oil paint and i wanted to ask can i use this instead of seraphim sepia wash from GW for death guard 30k style ?
Would love to know this as well. Literally looked the last two days for pale moonlit skin and this is the best one so far, but sadly without explanation. 🥲
It was a bit of a downer hearing how you were having to rush these to get them done in time for the video, as it doesn't seem 'in the spirit' of a Kill Team 'full of characters', but then I'd forgotten that you're a fantastic painter and so, of course these came out looking great! They were looking good from the off, but following your initial disappointment with the wash, it became apparent that 'Henry was back' and we were in for a treat.
'Maybe speed painting isnt for me'. Henry, I own EVERYTHING from the release of Octarius. EVERYTHING. My pile of shame should have me on a list. (Ive painted 5 models🤫)
Hi Henry, I know you have a few skin tone recipes out there, but I would love to see how you did this one in particular, also perhaps, a more elevated skin tone recipe than army painting... I also know Andy has a few... is there a good in between level? for Kill Teams, I would have said perhaps one of the War Cry or Underworlds sets would be amazing!! thank you!
I'll pick a few more skin heavy projects and we can take a look. This one is just rakarth flesh from above, terradon turquoise from below and a little red washed into the eye sockets
I'd really like to get that Plague Marine killteam just so I can convert them into Nurgle-corrupted Blood Angels from the Dornian Heresy Also how should I go about kitbashing my own Nurglite Blood Angels?
i think that sounds a great idea. PAint them red, couple head swaps like ive done here and perhaps swap any really weird weapons for more heresy typical ones.
Thanks for the "maybe speed painting is not for me". I've been fighting with slow painting for ages but maybe that's just okay.

thanks. I'd probably go for a white and a dark brown, and then depending on the other colours on the mini i'd alter the "middle" oil colour.
@cultofpaint ok sweet, thanks for your help. Im painting space marines (Nova Marines) blue and white.
I love watching you you guys kitbash. Have you considered turning the space marine half to a Death Watch Kill team? Would be awesome watching you kitbash each of them into whatever chapters they originated from.
Already started exactly that!
@ excellent! I can’t wait for the video 🔥
Can't wait for these beauties
Nice corrosion effect thats hpw i do my DG too!
Looks nice 🎉😮
It's interesting to see what a different result you can get with a bit of conversion and a more grim dark scheme. I've been painting these myself recently, they certainly aren't quick to paint with all the details, although some of the rest of the range take it to the next level, I'm not sure if i will ever have the energy to finish painting the biologus putrifier 😂 .
really amazing range isnt it, you can tell the designers loved doing it
@@cultofpaint yeah, you can always tell a ranges they had fun making when they have a huge number of minor characters (see also sisters and genestealer cults)
Would love to see the Eldar corsairs and the Kroot!
I did one corsair video when they came out, I'd love to try the full team.
Hi, what do you think of nemesis claw? I’d love to see your take on it!
huge potential. Definitely a candidate.
Whoop whoop, go team Henry \o/
Really enjoy this style of video. I can't believe it was 36 minutes long! It certainly didn't feel it.
Great to see you revisiting 40k Deathguard! How did you find this scheme compared to your previous "army painting" attempt? I'll have to put some pictures up on the discord of my on going Deathguard project following elements of your previous scheme, maybe even some WIP of the rest of it when I pick it up again. Any how, the weathering came out brilliantly, the Verdigris and subtle streaking in particular.
Thanks. I'd need to go and rewatch the old video, but i suspect a combo of the two would result in something close to what i was hoping for.
I would love to see your t'au variant. :)
I have seen in on of your vids you have the abteilung 502 sepia oil paint and i wanted to ask can i use this instead of seraphim sepia wash from GW for death guard 30k style ?
It is a darker brown than seraphim sepia. But im sure it would work great on that scheme.
@cultofpaint Thx for the answer i will give it a try ^^
How did you about painting the face on the flamer guy
Would love to know this as well. Literally looked the last two days for pale moonlit skin and this is the best one so far, but sadly without explanation. 🥲
black and white preshade. Rakarth sprayed from top, terradon turquoise sprayed from below. Bit of watered down red around the eyes.
The "modern" models have far too much crap on them. I do exactly the same to make them less busy, it Improves them enormously. Amazing as always mate
Blooooooooody helllllllllll. Those are good…
"Sucking at something is just the first step to being kinda, really good at something."
wisdomous words
Would love to see the kroot kill team as something a lot more organic
'Maybe speed painting isnt for me'. Henry, I own EVERYTHING from the release of Octarius. EVERYTHING. My pile of shame should have me on a list. (Ive painted 5 models🤫)
What's the glue thingy Henry puts over his mini with the green lid? (at 3:15 for example)
@@fuchsundich4370 Tamiya extra thin.
@@cultofpaint Thanks! Are you using it to seal remaining gaps in plastic minis? Never tried it, sounds interesting!
@fuchsundich4370 yes, and to smooth out any rough bits
@ Interesting! I give that a try :)
are you planning on doing some Mechanicum or Dark Mechanicum Legions Imperialis?
@@makinote yes. I thought I'd wait until we get the walkers.
I'd really like to get that Plague Marine killteam just so I can convert them into Nurgle-corrupted Blood Angels from the Dornian Heresy
Also how should I go about kitbashing my own Nurglite Blood Angels?
i think that sounds a great idea. PAint them red, couple head swaps like ive done here and perhaps swap any really weird weapons for more heresy typical ones.
Can you make the video about Painting & Kitbashing Warhammer 40,000 Combat Patrols?
- Space Marine Chapters: Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Ultramarines, Imperial Fists, Raven Guard, Space Wolves

Love it. Dream big.
Im so glad that im not the only one that thinks death guard modes are corny with all that hot topic stuff hanging off them
You guys coming to Adepticon 2025? I'm finally going and would like to sign up for paint classes!
It's looking good for us both being there next year.
@cultofpaint Erick will be happy.
Did you pin all of those poles and standards?
nope
