I have to reply to this so it'll vanish from my "comments I haven't responded to" list. Why does UA-cam include the your channel's own comments on this list? Who even knows.
Do all the newer army have lesbians? It's kinda off putting tbh.
“They are push-fit models...”
Ah, you mean they are “cut down a big needless chunk of plastic so I can actually assemble the model” models...
Quick tip for GW push fit models. Trim a bit of the "post" off of each connection to make it slightly more narrow when it fits into the socket. This allows the parts to still fit together perfectly but also allows room for glue.
A very good idea! I'll probably do this in the future... if I'm not too lazy ;)
argee
The day that you don't use aquarium gravel for your bases will be the saddest day...
I've still got about a kilogram of it left, so that's probably a couple of thousand minis at least. I think we're safe ;)
And so will the fish
These are amazing. I love how the hair and flame turned out. Looking forward to the next video. Keep up the good work.
No Penny this time? Did she see how much purple you'd used and refuse to be involved? :-D
Haha, I wish! She's been super busy on night shifts. Great for me making videos, bad for her doing anything except sleeping and working. Boooo.
Have burned through almost every video from all of my favorite UA-cam painters and have been looking for a new channel. I have found it.
Woo! You've got 60 new videos to explore :)
Just bought a cultist warband box and was looking for a easy and straight forward tutorial to paint'em... MWM 4years before already deliverd. Thank you Guy.
"We were able to pick up (Dark Uprising)." Lucky sods.
That GW's legendary pricing returned, in it's full, terrifying splendour, just in time for a much anticipated boxset made me laugh way more than it should, considering we all saw it coming. It's just, I don't anybody expected the box to be quite so much- it's like Gw's trying to make up for their last few boxes costing what they did.
I sort of thought that when I saw the price for the box set, but when I unpacked it, I realised what a downright HUGE amount of stuff there is in there. I also bought from a FLGS, so got a slightly better price than RRP, which helps :)
Exactly, you need to keep in mind that Dark Uprising is huge. I have it sitting on top of my Blood of the Phoenix box that I haven't had time to open yet. The Dark Uprising box is exactly twice the size.
Thanks for the video. The price tag on that new Necromunda box is no joke, so thanks Patrons! Actually pretty interested to see what you do with the enforcers in that set. Cheers Guy (and Penny)!
Let's just say I have a *plan* for the Enforcers...
I think you're guides are some of the most refreshing on how to get colours to work and how to get decently coloured minis on the board. I wish I knew you guys existed before I sunk a crap ton into paints.
Aw, thanks Matt! Well, hopefully we'll save you from some unnecessary purchases in the future, haha
I assembled these in bed, in the dark, very fragile but i didn't break anything, but holy shit they're delicate. Great upload
Just in bed in the dark!? My bed was on fire and i was blindfolded!! ;)
I get told off for assembling models in bed. It's worse than crumbs, apparently.
I notice when you mix paint in the pallet shots you didn’t always use the brush you were painting g with (especially during the layer stage) any reason for that? I started assembling my first real models today, hopefully by New Years I’ll have 900 pts of necrons ready to go!
Well spotted! Yeah, I tend not to mix paint with smaller brushes because it's easier to get the paint in the ferrule - the metal bit that holds the bristles in place. When paint dries up there, it starts to change the shape of the brush and bristles start firing off at random angles.
Totally awesome👍....tryin to use the painting method on the blackstone fortress chaos marines on the chaos 'chosen' marines hoping for good results
Nice! I bet it'll look awesome on them :)
Really loved you showing of the process of using a progressive palette. I've got a batch of Traitor Guard to paint this weekend I might employ that for!
Nice! Good luck using the technique, it's a pretty fun way of exploring colour theory while you paint :)
As it often happens to me with your videos, at first I'm highly skeptical ("this isn't going to work...") and by the end I'm amazed by how good the paintjob looks. I love the dark/bronze flesh tone of your cultists!
Tell me about it! I'm highly skeptical through the whole thing, and then in the final shots I think "oh, wait, this actually looks okay!" ;)
Talk about hindering line of sight, that firebrands "helmet" deal ought to count as like ... I dunno ... a friggin wall between him and anything anywhere that might even slightly suppose to be in his line of sight. Poor choice there, sir, poor choice indeed!
Haha, I like to imagine him ducking his head left and right, checking his blind spots like a cautious driver.
Midwinter Minis need to get him a stupid comically loud and sharp sounding air horn, s'cause me, I AM TRYING TO MERGE NOW, and other stupid driving jokes. Hey man, thanks for the reply, I know that in another video your girl mentioned you both read ALL YOUR COMMENTS, so it is really cool that you interact with your community. I think I will subscribe, since, you are a real good mini painter and a fun couple to listen to and watch.
Really love how these turned out, prop your best work so far! That evolving color blending was a really cool idea btw, I need to try that :)
Woo! Thanks Alex :) Yeah, it was a bit of a gamble, but glad it worked out for the video
Awesome no BS *real* speed painting vid. No premixing 100 shades on wet-pallete then editing to make it look fast.
Haha, thanks mate. Just 14 paints, a few brushes, and a whole lot of mistakes ;)
Did you assemble all Blackstone Models completely before painting? Or does it make sense to keep some parts detached for painting?
I did, for better or worse. I thought that most of the viewers would have probably done the same, so didn't want to force people to do things in sub-assemblies.
How do you keep the paint from drying? With the amount of water you used and they are vallejo paint the should thicken by the time you finished the last model with 1 color?
This is going to sound silly for a speed paint video, but... paint faster! :) Each colour stage usually takes me about 10/15 minutes when I'm batch painting like this. Go fast, don't worry about paint drying on the palette :)
maybe your best paintjobs yet!
Oh, you're too kind!
Got a fresh box of the blackstone fortress. I guess i will have to time how long i need for the minis. Maybe i can beat your times B)
I like a bit of competition! Good luck painting your set matey :)
I’d put off watching this video until I’d got the new set (thanks Santa!).
Well worth the wait! Great and informative video as always.
Trust you and Penny had a good Christmas. Looking forward to your new content for 2020!
Thanks so much John! Ho ho ho, and Happy New Year!
been looking at blackstone fortress to buy and wanted to paint the minis having stumbled across your very detailed paint guides, i am going to give this a go the way you describe and show i am giving this a shot starting all the way at the start, i hope to produce even something that looks even half of what you produce i will be satisfied beyond anything i thank you very much for your efforts and instructions
Good luck getting your set painted up! Hope you enjoy playing the game too :)
Awesome as always, my favorite youtube channel! How did you you like the new brushes? Do you think maybe you might do a video on eyes/faces? Keying in on them and doing a bit more close up on doing various faces / colors / washes and the thoughts and theories behind those choices at some point.. it's such a weakness of mine... ( though I am just starting out), it's the most intimidating part for me. I've watched other vids but the presenters just go on and on and end up making little sense 30 minutes later lol. You have a gift for teaching yet keeping it clear and simple. Always looking forward to more from you and Penny. =)
Thank you! First off, I thought the brushes were pretty good, but then again nearly all brushes are good at the start, it's how they handle being used over and over again that matters. I'll probably be able to let you know better in the future! Also, I might do an episode of easy faces, good idea :)
@@MidwinterMinis AWESOME =)
When you're basecoating, do you have any tips for keeping the colours for different areas apart? I was doing some DA veterans, and kept having the bone and green touching one another, and making the edges look incredibly messy. Tried to fix it after, but ended up making it look worse.
Try lining them with some brown wash! Use a detail brush and just line the borders between the colours, should make them both pop a bit too :)
Brilliant results from combining a load of the colours. I'm very much liking the dark finish on these guys.
Thanks Adam! Yeah, it's nice to mix up techniques and tones every one in a while :)
Suitably grimdark. Would look great as a Necromunda Helot gang
Yeah, totally!
With it being grim and dark now in the winter. It's not the best idea to spray outside. Any tips to allow us to spray safely in the winter?
I think it's totally fine, no? There's a lot of misconceptions about temperature, I think humidity is the biggest factor in speckly/uneven priming. I'll do some research though ;)
So many awesome sets to buy....so little funds in which to buy them....
The permanent problem of the mini painter ;)
Where are these Necromunda videos m8? Can’t wait!
They'll happen! We only do this as a hobby ;)
Could you Show us a necromunda Speedpainting 😱 for Example Terrain and the Gangs
Oh, that's definitely on the agenda!
New to painting minis When you paint on stuff like the skin during the base coats is it all just one coat of the color or are you letting it dry then putting more of that color on?
It's mostly one coat, unless I really feel the need to add a little more. The good thing about adding a wash is that it balances out the tone, and then you also add highlights, so it doesn't need to be a perfect 100% coverage, even basecoat :)
Im so tempted to buy all this Black fortress stuff for the Chaos stuff.... but I have already a 2600 pt Army... mostly unassembled and unpainted. Still this models look so awesome! But my urge to play the Game a first time in anyway pushes me to killteam >.>
Still your videos want me to do some actual cool Cultists.
Nice! Get that lot built and gaming! Sounds like you'll have a pretty formidable Chaos army on the go :)
@@MidwinterMinis Haha I hope so... I have no Idea how to play the Game, just bought some cool Models (and biggest part is Shadowspear) to create a Chaos undevided Army. Got hooked by your Guardsmen video to actually start painting Warhammer. Painting is my biggest kick in this. Now the year is almost over and I still need so much stuff to be done.
Slightly random comment... I feel like Bethesda should look at models like these for inspiration for Fallout. Granted they likely won't make another decent one. So it'd be pointless, but there's some interesting designs here. Futuristic but Tribal.
Maybe we should hope that Obsidian look at models like these, eh? ;) All the best Fallout games were Obsidian... controversial statement!
Not necessarily obsidian but def the crew working for them. Lol
Absolutely brilliant!!! I am half way through painting the main BF game mini's because of your videos. Thanks!
Nice one Sean! Thanks so much for becoming one of our patrons, too :)
That's a great look for the cultists, and a pretty fun approach to mixing the colours. I'm a bit irked by the flame/hair-less models, in that they don't really have a big, sexy bit to add a contrasting colour to. What would you think was a good bit to splash with some colour?
You could maybe make the casings of their weapons a solid accent colour to give them a bit more spice? Or, if you're feeling adventurous, freehand a little squad logo on their battleskirts? ;)
Haha, the weapons casings were my first thought, "Hmmm, maybe some hazard stripes..." - but that's my solution to everything: paint hazard stripes! :D Maybe I need to challenge myself, and try painting them... a solid colour :)
Definitely going to try the progressive palette on my next batch, looks like it saves a lot of time. You always have such great tips + techniques to enlighten us with! Many thanks.
Thanks James! Really glad you enjoyed this episode and the palette technique, good luck trying it out!
That Cultist Champion looked amazing with her hair and the purple of the robes/skirt cloth.
I did like the way the tanned skin and bronzed armour went together.
But what did Penny think of all that purple?
To be honest, Penny wasn't a fan ;)
Midwinter Minis I did not think she would like it.
My CorpseMaker Death Guard have purple cloth on them.
Hello everyone! I'm newish and Guy makes these guys look wicked cool! Does anyone know how kill team friendly these guys are? I only play orks and I'm looking to expand and I'm unbelievably excited about these guys.
I finally got the joke of Bostonians pronouncing "Car Key" like "Khaki". In *vanilla* US english the "a" is pronounced like "apple" or "can" so it totally doesn't work. The way you say "Khaki" I keep expecting it to be weathered steel with a big satin black bit on one end.
I didn't have to go to the store 1
Got these guys as a Chaos cult for Necromunda, but essentially put myself in a deadend when I snipped the leader's ponytail off to snazz up my Escher Gang Queen. I intended to green stuff long hair and a replacement ponytail, but alas, I remembered I'm dogpoo with any sort of putty.
Great video, super stoked you are going to do the Dark Uprising box. Don't get me wrong I know you will do a bang up job on the minis, but I am most looking forward to your ideas on the terrain.
My fingers are so sore after assembling all that Zone Mortalis stuff!
@@MidwinterMinis Blood for the blood god, pain to appease Slaanesh...see you are doing your part. The Chaos Gods are pleased.
Fruit leather, favoured by khorne.
Delicious
Lots of fantastic tips in this one. Well done Guy! I don't have this expansion, but I really like the look of these models.
Thanks mate! I haven't had a chance to play any of the campaigns in the expansion yet, but it looks pretty good :)
I just got every expansion including escalation from a local guy for just about msrp. I can't believe it.
Having now looked at the box art, I really like the changes you made to the colour scheme, far nicer than the original in my opinion.
Thanks very much!
Great job my man
Thanks mate!
Not done any Warhammer 40k in probably over 20 years, but this stuff intrigues me
Hey mate, bit late to the party but do you think you'll ever do some videos on retinue and solo characters? I'm absolutely loving this series and it's been a huge help with my painting, both in general and for Blackstone Fortress.
These look awesome, I particularly like the skin tones. Thanks for the tutorial :D
No problem! Glad you enjoyed it :)
These guys looked awesome in the end. I’ve got a chaos space marines army and I wish that I could find a tutorial like this when I was painting my cultists. Also nice little outro!
Thanks Ben! Yeah, not too many fast guides for painting up Cultists, definitely a gap in the market eh? ;)
Great tutorial. My cultists are coming out so well. When are you releasing those necromunda vids?
Very nice work I picked up Dark uprising as well that is one massive box
Another good one. I can't bring myself to speed paint like this...I mean I can, but I have a problem. I put too much work into each of my models and don't get stuff done! Your channel is perfect for this...paint...get stuff done...play. I think your blue hair looks boss on these plus the licks of green spooky or chemically flame is a great standout choice as well. For speed painting, this is the place to be :)
Thanks mate! A lot of the speed aspect is really just practise, and also eventually you just stop caring, haha. Just get it done fast, and fix then fix the mistakes ;)
Can I get a link for where to get those brushes?
It'll be different depending on your country, but they're Artist's Loft and/or Royal & Langnickel Gold Taklon brushes :)
There are 86 billion neurons in an average human brain and my hatred towards to the firebrand cannot even be comprehend by 100 average normal human brains.
Absolutely perfect as always mate! This may seem like a strange way to go, but I'm going to use this tutorial for my Drukhari kill team, namely my Haemonculi Coven stuff! Aside from using a paler skin tone for the typical Drukhari look more or less (ideas on what to use in order to tie that into the technique?), I'm gonna follow it exactly. I think the Wracks and Grotesques and Incubi and Mandrakes I'm working on are going to look incredible using this method! Thank you so much as always!
Oh nice, I bet that would look great on those kind of models :)
So happy to see you picked up necromunda, now i can live vicariously through you.
Haha, I think a lot of people are thinking the same thing ;)
not drilling out the gunbarrels?! REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE love the vids keep it up
Haha, drilling's for chumps ;) I gotta paint the next thing!
I'll send you my miniatures to finish my chaos army. i see you can do that real quick. so what is your adress?
Did you ever do the Necromunda content you mentioned in this video? I don't recall seeing anything
Even quicker for edging the bases - i use a chisel-tip black sharpie. Love these videos, very helpful. Thanks.
Interesting! I'll have to try it out. Penny has a massive pen and marker collection, so I'll have to "borrow" one ;)
Ughhh! Why Guy why? I was quite happy procrastinating over these models, now I’m gonna have to assemble and paint them now!
(Seriously though, great job! Love the scheme, really like the aesthetic)
Haha, sorry Jon! In fairness, they're a very nice little squad to paint :)
great vid guy as allways. I think I am gonna use these cultist as an necromunda gang.
I found this video with #wigglybits
Haha, as it should be ;)
Did you thin the push-fit pegs with a file before assembly, or, chopped the pegs off entirely? I find that this makes assembly a whole lot easier.
That method of mixing all the paints together gives a great effect.
No such luck, I just jammed them together and hoped for the best ;)
6.30 - awesome advice, as a horde army player I cannot agree with you more on this bit :)
Totally, right? Being quick then tidying up > being careful all the time
Awesome job on this channel has already uplifted the plank of the table-top standard! Congrats on hitting 30K! Expecting Heresy anytime soon? Always great to see how a channel grows, I was there in the beginning!
I expect Heresy every day of my life, but in terms of painting the models... maybe! Lots to do before I can consider that, but I definitely like the old chapter colours :)
Very nice paintjobs and love the bg music. Befitting. 😁
Thank you Jared!
Is it possible to completely strip a model of its paint if you want to make a huge change of color scheme?
It depends on the paint and how thick you have it on, I'm in the US so I soak the minis I want to strip overnight in alcohol to get the east stuff with a stiff tooth brush then I let them soak in simple green for a few days to get the rest with the stiff brush, then the last step is under a magnifying lens (old eyes ...lol) I use a fine point xacto blade to get the paint in the crevices....this works for me with GW, Vallejo and Reaper paints
Haha, you totally can, but don't feel like you need to! :)
Here is a video that compares different household cleaners to strip minis with and the results, hope it helps ua-cam.com/video/OqBjt1wKZfc/v-deo.html
Hhhhhhnnnnnnngggghhhhh still can't handle the don't worry about it!
The cultists are nice.
Pretty cool, eh?
Awesome job! Where did you get that turntable? and what is the name of it? I would love to get one myself! :)
Oh, it's just a non-brand one off eBay. Took a punt and it turned out okay! :)
Asome guaide !
Thanks! :)
Hot damn (pun intended ;) ) those skin tones are FLAWLESS! Good job bud! Loving the new music btw
Thanks pal! Nice to mix skin tones up a little bit now and then :)
Great colour work. This blendings are amazingly awesome
Thanks very much! I love mixing it up sometimes :)
love this color scheme
Cheers David!
what brushes you use?
It's in the video! Artist's Loft Essentials in this episode :)
You're making really goods videos , nice results , and always good tips , thank you Mate.
Thank you Eric! :)
Oh and poor old penny had to work so was no there to add her whimsical overtures to the conversation - next time Penny its your turn while guy takes the dog walkies!!
I'd love to have her take the helm for an episode! Give me an evening off ;)
That was a great video and the models look fantastic for such a quick paint job.
Thank you Paul! Glad it worked out! :)
Love the video. Always love seeing your tutorials. Really stoked your moving on to Necromunda!
Old Necromunda was my favourite game, so I'm really excited to start fiddling around with the new stuff :)
best sub on youtube.
Thanks Mike!
Awesome as always! Watched it during my nightshift. 😊
Did I manage to keep you awake? Haha
My box of these arrived yesterday! Gonna fit right into my heretic astartes kill team - defo using your guide to paint them.
This is by far my fave painting channel and I watch pretty much all of them.
Love the duo commentary and how accessible you make the paint schemes.
Would be awesome to see you paint some warcry!
I'd like to try out some AOS stuff this year, so we'll see! :)
@@MidwinterMinis so you promise...
#wigglybiiiits 😍
The inevitable return ;)
Love the blanchetsu feel of this colour scheme. Great video for relaxation and inspiration.
Thanks Kevin! Yeah, definitely an inspiration :)
Yes! #Wigglybits
It was about time eh? ;)
Guy: Owns a large enough Warhammer collection to showcase on youtube
Also Guy: Doesn't want you to think he shelled out a couple of extra dollars for fancy brushes
so whats happened to necromunda?
Cant wait for your necromunda content!
👍👍👍🍀🍀🍀
:D
Just watched this video and was very happy to watch it again. Thanks for the tip on skin tone, I will be using it for now on for "Chaos" infected models. I also tried the one base tone with different additional colours and was very happy with the result. I can say that I will now paint all my figures in this manner. Thank you very much, and hope you and Penny are safe. Look forward to hearing from you soon.
Just finished watching the whole playlist. It was great! Entertaining and informative. Hoping to see tutorials on the four retinue characters and solitaire from the 2019 annual book.
Battle skirt? I think I need one
Would love to see you work on some new Necromunda models, just getting into the hobby and your vids been very helpful.
