500 Meters in 30 Seconds - WINCH LAUNCH

  • A winch launch is the fastest and cheapest method to launch a glider. It was great fun to fly the LS3 again. The noise of the glider is horrible at the moment, I need to seal the canopy properly.

    My first glider flight was a cable launch in a Slingsby Sedbergh, I just about crapped my self as we pitched up against a stiff breeze, but after a few seconds it wasn't so bad.

    Oh how I miss doing this - I've not had this experience since the mid '80s, winch-launching in an ASK-21 at what was West Malling airfield in Kent (now a damn housing estate), then catching thermals over carparks and business parks in Maidstone, spiralling up and gaining altitude to be able to head up Blue Bell Hill and on to Rochester airport where you could get massive thermals from GEC-Avionics' huge car park (who would have guessed then that I'd end up working there a few years later) and then head off all over Kent for a few hours of sublime peace and quiet.

    Do you get a lot of g's during a winch launch? I wanna try but also I already feel like passing out when doing rollercoasters xd wondering how much acceleration you can feel in this case

    • @davedonald9966

      No. Only a very brisk acceleration. When established in the full climb, it’s a rocket ride! Nothing like a roller coaster unless the cable/rope/wire breaks.

  • @TheSoaringChannel

    Stefan - how long of a cable/runway is at that field in order to achieve the gain you got? I've been looking at a winch for our club. Is there a ballpark ratio of length of runway and cable vs what altitude can be achieved?

    • @deflyingfarmer
      @deflyingfarmer 2 роки тому +2

      I think it is around 1m of height for 3m of cable. We have a 1200m cable winch at our club, and average a 400m launch height

    • @steilkurbler4973
      @steilkurbler4973 2 роки тому +2

      @@deflyingfarmer Seems realistic. We get 300-350m on 950m rope. Depending on what plane, pilot, winch driver, weather, the usual.
      Depending on the whole System you might get higher release heights with plastic rope over steel cables.

    • @TheSoaringChannel
      @TheSoaringChannel 2 роки тому

      Thank you, everyone, for the replies! So a 3:1 roughly seems like the better end of yield for the winch launches. I've run this idea by our club for when the tow plane is busted, etc. And it would be great for training at our club.

    • @breintje91
      @breintje91 2 роки тому

      Strongly depends on the headwind. We usually get 400 metres on an 1100 m cable (dyneema), but it can be anywhere between 300 and 550 between slight tailwind and good headwind. In fact, if the winch is rigged to allow extension, light wooden gliders can kite all the way up to the end of the cable if the wind at altitude is strong enough.

    Hallo Stefan
    Das war zwar nur ein Spassflug und kein Wettbewerb, und wahrscheinlich weisst du es schon, aber der Klappeneinsatz bei 2:20 war nicht ganz optimal. John Delafield schrieb in seinem Buch „Wettkampf Segelflug“, dass viele Piloten die Klappen ineffizient anwenden. Was er sagt klingt logisch: Beim Hochziehen bleiben die Klappen negativ, wie du es ja auch gemacht hast, Es sei Unsinn, mit mehr als 1.3G zu ziehen, und das Bisschen Mehrauftrieb kann das Profil auch negativ vorwölbt hergeben. So weit also alles bestens. Dann aber schreibt er, in der Parabel beim Nachdrücken werde trotz abnehmender Geschwindigkeit sehr wenig Auftrieb benötigt. Die Klappen können also negativ bleiben, was einiges an Widerstand einspare. Sie sollten erst NACH der Parabel in Thermikstellung gesetzt werden, wenn wirklich der volle Auftrieb benötigt wird.
    Beim Abflug aus der Thermik setzen offenbar viele Piloten die Klappen zu spät negativ, und das habe ich hier auch bei dir beobachtet. Auch beim Nachdrücken in den Schnellflug reduziert sich der benötigte Auftrieb wegen der Parabel, die das Flugzeug beschreibt. Du kannst also problemlos direkt aus dem Kreis heraus die Klappen hoch stellen ohne vorher die Geschwindigkeit zu erhöhen. Das Flugzeug sollte von alleine die Nase senken und in den Schnellflug übergehen.
    Ist wohl alles „kalter Kaffee“ für dich. Wenn nicht, könnte es dir wertvolle Sekunden einsparen beim Wettbewerb.

    • @SteFly
      @SteFly  2 роки тому +4

      In diesem Fall war es nur rein zur Gaudi und ich hatte mir keine Gedanken über die korrekte Klappenstellung gemacht. Trotzdem ist das immer wieder gut zu hören und auch bei Thermikflügen mache ich das nicht immer optimal. ;)
