My comment disappeared?? Guys, Daiwa has this as a normal feature, and it’s called the ABS Spool. It’s supposed to be a little wider towards the top. This advice is good for other brands but not for Daiwa owners.
Not all Daiwa reels are ABS reels. The reel I have in this video is not ABS. The high sitting line in this video is because of shim issues. If you have an ABS reel shims still come into play, you just need the line to be perpendicular to the reel.

Great tutorial, and it's great they supply washers, but really? Those reels are worth a small fortune and it's very average that it shouldn't come perfect out the box.
James Calley to be fair this is 12+ months old, I had 1 brand of braid on and changed to this braid recently. Was after I changed that it wasn’t right. Every line will be different in some way so the reel won’t always be seated right. It is very uncommon to have to adjust them from the box though. I just keep all the box’s, the reel has done a fair bit of work.
roborovski008 hey mate, I haven’t seen that issue and it won’t be a shim related problem. Has the reel been dropped or jammed in between stuff? Potentially if the nail arm is bent or it is a bit corroded inside it may account for it. Without having a look at the reel I can’t help much more sorry.
Good video Thank You for explaining this but this is NOT a “quick and easy fix.” I gotta spool on and off 50-100 yards a few times to see if my line lay is even. And I got a PENN Fierce III 5000 size Spinning Reel that I am spooling 300 yards of 30lb braid on. This DEFINITELY IS TIME CONSUMING. Why can’t this just be simple as: I tie my arbor knot and get spooling and -BAM! Even and good to go?
When you drop 400 dollars on a Penn reel or in your case Diawa which is probably thousand you shouldn't have to fix it. Throwing a few washers in is just a scapegoat for rubbish machining. That can be the only reason some reels spool like this and soon do not 👍
A reel that sits right with one type of line might lay different on a different type or weight or line. Also, over time drag washers wear down which move the spool height. Quality reels acknowledge this and supply shims to counteract all sorts of issues. Its preparedness for changes and a long life of use. Something you only get with quality gear.

@@MurrayCrabbFishing Wow thanks for the quick reply, yeah it has squashed down a fair bit, I'll leave it in and see how it goes but it was better than before anyway, cheers
Lochie David no worries mate, thanks for watching.
I did this and now my drag isn’t nearly as loud
Have you placed everything back the same way?
It shouldn’t effect your drag noise as it’s not related to it.
My line is spooling up to where there is both more line at the top and bottom than the middle sany advice
Sounds like it needs a good service and respool
@@MurrayCrabbFishing sadly they are brand new diawa fuego
@@jlipstraw45 that is very unusual mate.
You can try pulling line off and reslooping under pressure.//
@@jlipstraw45 My new Fuego has average line lay also. Yet dirt cheap Diawa Laguna has excellent line lay.
never had this issue with Okuma reels
It will happen to any reel over time.
Different elements, lines and wear on the shins will adjust the sit of the spool. It’s inevitable.
@@MurrayCrabbFishing i see, well the box doesnt have any spare shims, either
@@WhiteGhost21 when you need you will be able to contact them and get them.
Also a lot of shins fit multiple reels:
@@MurrayCrabbFishing so how are you able to tell your shims are wearing out? just randomly you start to get wind knots or something or the line lay just stops being as even if youre to respool?
@@WhiteGhost21 line lay will be the tell mate:
As shims flatten with age the lay will sit higher.
Where can we get more. Mine did not come with any
Have to contact your reel manufacturer mate.
They should be able to ship some/
@@MurrayCrabbFishing thanks
@@MurrayCrabbFishing I was able to find the size of the washer and went to hardware store. Got for 20 cents
Hey Mate. After i remove the drag cap, I can't remove my spool from the reel. it's stuck with little up/down movement. What should I do? I have the Daiwa BG5000
AznVinc3nt it may be caught in something.
I have a BG 2000, 2500 and 4000 and I’ve never had issue.
I will set a reminder to have a look and see what it may be when I get home. 👌🏼
@@MurrayCrabbFishing all good mate. Took is back to anaconda. Apparently it was faulty!
AznVinc3nt there you go mate. Glad it’s sorted.
I just purchased a saltx and had to remove all of the washers so it only has the red oring. Is that ok?
You need the drag washers, the only ones you can remove and add that won’t effect the running are the shims.
@@MurrayCrabbFishing Sorry i meant to say Shim. I removed it so only the washer and the oring are on. I had to remove it in order to spool it correctly. Should it be a concern if the reel comes like this out the box?
@@MongoDAoC nah mate, different lines lay differently and other varying factors.
As long as once you adjust it it is good and works well then no issue mate 👍🏼
Thank you 👍

Does anyone know why my spool has side to side play in it ?
@@LiamPompeani it could be a number of things, it could be warn on the shaft or the shaft has play.
It could have other issues, one of those things that probably needs to be pulled a part and investigated.
@@MurrayCrabbFishing I apreciate the help. The reel is new only used 3 times and is quite high end diawa. could there be any chance its suppost to ?
@@LiamPompeani no mate, it shouldn’t have much side play at all.
Mine is spooling only on the bottom and i have no shims to remove.
@@critiqueandcomedy potentially need to source a thinner brand of drag washers or lightly sand down the underside of the spool… but you need to be careful doing that.
my spool lacks in the middle is it okay?
AustinPowers G is it an older
Reel?
AustinPowers G honestly if it’s an even vine mate, shouldn’t be an issue.
Good info, just wish the focus had been clearer.
Kenneth Nied thanks, sadly the GoPro focuses on what it feels like and while filming I can’t see that. :/
James Calley thanks for watching mate
What if u dont have the washers
john hall your reel manufacturer should be able to supply them if you contact them.
@@MurrayCrabbFishing thank you
I cant believe I threw out a reel because of this thank god it was a cheap piece of shit anyway, but now I know 👍
I cant believe i missed this comment. hopefully no more reels lost to this now.
how do you fix hourglass shape line lay instead ?
roborovski008 hey mate, I haven’t seen that issue and it won’t be a shim related problem.
Has the reel been dropped or jammed in between stuff?
Potentially if the nail arm is bent or it is a bit corroded inside it may account for it.
Without having a look at the reel I can’t help much more sorry.
@@MurrayCrabbFishing it's a daiwa bg, fresh out of the box
roborovski008 that’s got me stumped then mate. Sorry.
I don’t have those anymore
You will have to try order them
Good video Thank You for explaining this but this is NOT a “quick and easy fix.”
I gotta spool on and off 50-100 yards a few times to see if my line lay is even.
Something you only get with quality gear.
thx
👍🏼
lol... RTFM!
Bram van der Heijden ??
@@MurrayCrabbFishing sorry... was suprised that so many people don't know what the shims/washers are for.
Guess many don't read a manual. (Read The F***** Manual).
Bram van der Heijden yeah, I made this video because of the amount of people that didn’t know.
I guess to be honest I do t read most manuals instructions either.... lol
Reels are something I try take care of. 🤣
