Thank you for the most helpful video for spacer washers on a Daiwa. You made my day! I almost returned the Fuego because I couldn't see the rubber band and couldn't get bearing off. THANKS!

Should be interesting to see the difference. On mine, it bunches up at the rear, so as you said, I'll open it and see if I can remove 1 shim (mine didn't come with any shims). Thanks so much!
I had this issue on my new reel… It wasn’t the plastic washers either. It’s simply my error, when self spooling your line you want to spool the first few yards slowly until it fills your spool from top to bottom and you realize it’s even. When you realize it’s even from top to bottom you can full blown spool it faster. Trust me it works!
thank you...yup uneven line on my okuma trio 40s,there were 3 washers,I took out one, spooled back braid line..wow..even line..yayy..mahalo for your awesome and very helpful video.. aloha!!😁
Thank you very very much for this video!! I just recieved my first (and after this, the last!) Daiwa reel, and it was of course off when laying on the line. I got it done but the sweat ran cold trying to get that tiny rubber band off without snapping it! 😂 I just cannot understand why a premium reel producer can't get the shims right from the factory. I never ever had this problem with any Shimano reel, only with a Abu Garcia Cardinal SX, and they at least had the good sense to put the shims outermost on the shaft...
Absolutely! Happy to be of help. To be honest, sometimes reels are messed with before landing at home. For instance, some tackle shops will let customers hold and play around with the reel to see how they like it. Unfortunately, a lot of people like to tighten the drag to max and leave it there. Over time, this causes the parts on the spool shaft to compress. Causing issues like this. Whenever I’m done with using my reels, I loosen the drag all the way during storage.
I just want even line lay. Hard to avoid wind knots especially when fishing to leader but I'm here for line lay. I've found even to be best for me. Some prefer it to Kay up and others down but I'm all about evenness. And I'm to a point of needing a metal shim, bushing, spacer wtf ever for under my plastic shim. It's as thin as they get but line lay still sucks. Or isn't perfect which means it sucks. Thanks for sharing brother. 👍
A stainless steel flat washer will do in a pinch as a add on shim but I'd probably put it between the two original shims. I have a cheapo daiwa that was doing the same thing as the BG, stacking towards the top. I came here because I forgot if you have to add a shim or remove a shim to adjust for that problem. Baby powder in the neoprene gloves works wonders btw. Also the rubber band is called an O-ring.😌
Some are not all. This one had more than it’s supposed to according to my friend who works for them. This happened over time, was not adjusted straight out the box. This also is a how to for reels in general, not specifically the bg.
worked great. Was lucky as found a spare shym on Fuego for my better Daiwa Procyon. The box for the Fuego was in the trash already and luckily didnt throw out as 3 shyms in a plastic baggie inside.
Hey man! Thanks a lot for the support :) Happy the video you saw was enough to get you over here and put a line in the water! 50lb?!?! That's one heck of a day trip man!!
It worked!! My BG2500 was top heavy with line and now it’s even. Thanks so much! Now one question, what are the other 2 spacers for? Will i need them in the future for anything? Came with 3.
You can make your own plastic washer. Use caps from plastic bottle . Make a hole in plastic in the middle large enough to fit the stem/shaft and cut it around in a circle. You can use a drill to make a hole in the bottle cap. Cheap fix
Hey Mason, im guessing you are using braid? The most common issue is laying the braid on tight enough. When spooling, pressure needs to be added to keep it from doing that. Can you take a finger nail and dig it into the spool fairly easily?
Have heard some reels do have a slight cone, but this had a whole ring exposed on the bottom with the top maxed out. I have 3 other of the same reel but different sizes that have and always have had flat line lay. After, I was able to put much more line on and no more wind knots.
@@ZackBostick yep, your line profile might have been too cone shaped, overly cone shaped. But the profile is not really designed to be parallel sided -- but if it works, it works! Sure wish I would have looked into this first, before I tried a second spool of braid on my brand new reel. Yep, $35 of braid in the trash. The 2nd one ended up getting tangled up due to frustration, and spending 2 1/2 hours of trying things to get it right. I never experienced this before and starting questioning myself, even tho I have been spooling up my reels for over 45 years, lol. Then a light bulb came on after I seen this vid, and damn, I was wondering why there was a couple of extra plastic washers in that little zip bag in the box. No explanation why or what they were for. Let me know how it worked out for you! Just pay attention in which direction it is coning :) this fix can be an annoyance, especially respooling over and over if the problem isn’t fixed to my liking the first time /:
Bro thank you so much for the video. I am looking At my new BGMQ 4000 Daiwa. Instructions with the reel are not the best. I have three of those washers that you lost in the past lol otherwise the instructions don’t make it clear that they are for that purpose. Until today I never knew there was a REEL made where the line could go on incorrectly and have an INCLUDED solution to adjust it. Main question is why didn’t Daiwa build it to where it lays on in a uniform manner? WTH?
No problem at all! Happy to help :) They make great reels, and they do typically come with line lay in the manner it is supposed to. The problem is, sometimes after much use and/or someone leaves the drag tight after fishing, the washers begin to give. The constant compression of the drag system on the washers flattens them at a faster rate. Which leads to problems such as this. That’s a main reason I don’t buy display models. And if i buy one used, one of the first things I check is if the reel’s drag is handed to me locked down. Usually means they store it in that manner.
@@ZackBostick ok! Makes sense. Thanks for an explanation! 👍 since moving to Fl in late 80s I had read to loosen up drag when storing and it stuck with me. ASSumed (lol) most everyone knew better.

It appears on my reel that if the drag setting is to lose it will cause a uneven spool. All I had to do was tighten the drag to the proper setting and now it’s perfect.
Nice! Yeah, always want to have drag locked down when spoiling up. Otherwise, uneven line lay, lose of line capacity, causes wind knots and even line sink.
Very well informed presentation Zack. I've had this occur & I released the line behind my boat and then re-spooled. Genius shim idea. You one very funny guy. Don't quit your day job just yet my fishy smelling friend~!
Shims work fine when the thicker area of line is at the front of the spool. Unfortunately, a few poor-quality reels (generally an uncommon Chinese brand) will come with shims, but the spool needs to be moved farther back in. The best solution for those is the trash can and buy a respected brand.
Some Diawas are supposed to lay line somewhat uneven to the eye. Even those can foul up and need some tinkering. Some cheaper reels don’t use the shims, therefore they can’t be worn down.
No problem! Biggest issue is storage. Every time I am done using any reel I loosen the drag as much as possible. What happens is, if it is stored with pressure (drag on) everything gets compressed and over time it loses its maximum range of motion. lol, good question!
Do you have any experience with the Regal LT’s? I’ve got two 2000D regals that spool line off the bottom of the spool, but when I take the spool off it doesn’t have any spacers, just a very thick washer under the bearings. Do I take that off and replace with a spacer?
Great information.. but I do have a question.. I have a daiwa kage spinning reel and from what I can see my line is laying even but when feeling in line it randomly will wrap around the bottom of the spool. I am assuming I would need to maybe remove a shim?
Uh this is really old I know but I don’t want people thinking their Daiwa BG is defective. The BG has a reverse taper spool, it’s supposed to be wider towards the top for less resistance against the spool lip when casting. You guys have messed with the natural design of the reel.
This video was not directed specifically for BG. You are correct but the line was tapering more then it was supposed to. I had a buddy of mine that works for the company take a look at it. He agreed that it was more aggressive than intended.
Just a question,my slammer 3 is laying line thick towards the bottom,i already replace with smaller shim, its better but still smal gap on top of the spool.can i go without any shim?
my reel does not go up and down? the line just stays at the top of the reel then gradually falls down on its own. :( lots of tangles. The rod seems standard issue maybe I got burned on the reel? do they actually make reels that do not go up and down ty
In general all spinning reels will lay line up and down the spool. Some spool tighter, some not. My best guess is the gear (or one of them) is not catching so the spool stays in same position. I’d stop the headaches of untangling line and paying for new line and get a different reel. The bg is a great reel that is very versatile. I’ve seen them new on marketplace for under $70 for 4K size
Add a shim from an old reel of the same size. A lot of people just make their own. Not so say any size (thickness) will work. May take some trail and error.
Thanks B! Around richmond, no. Closer to hampton and va beach, I know a bunch. I replace my own guides and youll most likely find it isnt too hard and kinda fun :) hmm maybe I could make a video about that?!? Do you need the whole guides replaced or do you have the type that just needs new ceramic?
I need the whole guide on two. A video would be great. Never thought about attempting it myself. Good idea for cold weather content! Also maybe a video on reel maintenance. I am terrified to pull down my conventional reel. Lots of little parts inside.
That's a great idea! I will be brainstorming for sure. Oh trust me man, I hate taking apart reels. I designed a clear box to work in, but somehow lost it during my move lol! I need to make another one... I need to break a guide now 😂😂
Some model reels don’t have extras. I would take the reel apart and see what size you are looking for. I’ve seen people make their own. Usually becomes too much of a headache getting the thickness right.
I am confused on what you mean.. if it’s literally getting caught under the spool, sounds like you’re using either very thick line and or over spooled it. Or that when retrieving you don’t have tension to the lure or bait. Could be a combo of very heavy mono mixed with retrieving very little weight.
Fellow Asian, I use another reel. The one that has line on it, set it down with the drag completely loosened. Run the line through another rod and tie it to the other reel. Winding it off the spooled reel and onto the spare reel.
I am very confused bc I thought most bushings were round…maybe cylindrical but still round. Like bushings on suspension parts and such. I’m sure the stainless steel washer would work to replace the shim :)
Probably better off converting the rotary motion to linear motion using a crank and rod going to another gear or flywheel that’s oriented along the appropriate axis. (If the spool gear is oriented along what we’ll call the z axis, it’s driving a linear actuator along the z axis to a flywheel oriented flat along the x axis) with another linear actuator so that we can convert the motion from the z axis to the x axis. Then put a smooth rod along the x axis and a carrier of some kind that the line sits inside of allowing the carrier to move freely on the smooth rod. This solves a few different problems. 1) it can easily be adjusted to move at the appropriate speed along the x axis at multiple different points allowing for a large amount of reduction 2) since you’re not using a screw actuator you don’t have to solve the problem of getting the carrier back to where it came from without spinning the rod in reverse and 3) it’s simple with few points of failure. I’d suggest a large reduction to start. Do this by welding the connecting rods to the far edge of the inside of the rotary motion wheels. This will make the rotary wheels spin slower than the spool meaning the line will move from left to right much slower. There’s some math you can do to figure out an exact amount of reduction but you can find that freely online. But basically every time the spool rotates once you want the linear motion to change by the width of the line. The ratio of the circumference of the spool to the width of the line will give you that number. But alas, the size of the spool is always changing diameter so you’ll have to use averages and just do your best. I’d start with like 25:1 and see where that lands you. You can always increase the reduction between the first rotary wheel and the spool too to decrease the speed of the linear actuation
Either google search the part or you can make them yourself. I know a lot of people who use bottle caps that are cut down. But I’ll tell you before hand, it can get nerve racking (unspooling and respooling) when trying to get the right thickness of the shims. But I’d contact customer support with the company and see if they can sell some to you directly.
It’s awesome how these tiny shims are needed but if you don’t have extra they’re impossible to find online. I’m gonna have to make my own again out of a plastic container the same thickness
For sure! Lots of people make their own and it helps out :) always keep old spare reels.

Lmao! Thanks Wilson :) I'll do my best 😂😂
Gr8 lil tip right there!!!
Thanks man! Much appreciated :) Hope all is well
Very well informed presentation Zack. I've had this occur & I released the line behind my boat and then re-spooled. Genius shim idea. You one very funny guy. Don't quit your day job just yet my fishy smelling friend~!
Haha thanks Dave! Oh trust me, I won’t be lol!
Thanks bro where did you put your line to take it off and back on? Onto another reel?
No problem! Yes, that’s what I did since I was reusing it for demo purposes. Otherwise I’d have sit it or brought the drill out lol
thank you, my diawa fuego did this real bad, gonnas put both shims in
No problem! Happy to help. Hopefully 2 works but depending, may have to unspool and go down to 1
Shims work fine when the thicker area of line is at the front of the spool. Unfortunately, a few poor-quality reels (generally an uncommon Chinese brand) will come with shims, but the spool needs to be moved farther back in. The best solution for those is the trash can and buy a respected brand.
Fair enough
If my line is thicker in the upper side of the spool... What do I have to do, I will take out a plastic ring, or I will put another one!?
All my daiwas have this problem from my really expensive one to my cheap one. None of my Pfluegers have spool issues even my cheap ones.
Some Diawas are supposed to lay line somewhat uneven to the eye. Even those can foul up and need some tinkering. Some cheaper reels don’t use the shims, therefore they can’t be worn down.
Thanks, this has been pissing me off! Been avoiding using the reel. My question is why TF would they do this!?
No problem! Biggest issue is storage. Every time I am done using any reel I loosen the drag as much as possible. What happens is, if it is stored with pressure (drag on) everything gets compressed and over time it loses its maximum range of motion. lol, good question!
My new Diawa Diablo did this right out of the box
Do you have any experience with the Regal LT’s? I’ve got two 2000D regals that spool line off the bottom of the spool, but when I take the spool off it doesn’t have any spacers, just a very thick washer under the bearings. Do I take that off and replace with a spacer?
Huge help to see this detailed video - thank you!!
Absolutely Paul! Happy to be able to help you out!
Good information, just try to get to the point a lot quicker. This 7 minute video would be much more effective in a 1 1/2 minute video.
Understood! Thanks for letting me know! I will keep this in mind Estes :)
Have to disagree. Video was fine as it is.
Ima have to enjoy! learned something I needed to know thanks a lot
Give daiwa j braid a try.. it won’t fray and fuzz up like the line you have on now
Yessir! I have been using that recently on most all of my braid set ups! Really seems to be much better quality!! Thanks man
Great information.. but I do have a question.. I have a daiwa kage spinning reel and from what I can see my line is laying even but when feeling in line it randomly will wrap around the bottom of the spool. I am assuming I would need to maybe remove a shim?
How full do you have the spool? Is it over spooled? What size like do you have on it? Is it all right when retrieving?
@@ZackBostick it’s definitely over filled. Always careful to look. It has 15lb power pro braid.
Great video... Thank you ❤️
No problem!
i added the spacers. I took out the spacers, it didn't matter. still a triangle line lay. very frustrating.
Some reels are just not fixable. What reel is it?
@@ZackBostick Quantum Energy S3. I returned and got a Stradic.
Hahaha thanks buddy!!
No problem 👍
Very useful thank you
Uh this is really old I know but I don’t want people thinking their Daiwa BG is defective.
When that happens to me, I did the same thing and ended up running without one completely. Hopefully that will work for your case as well :)
my reel does not go up and down? the line just stays at the top of the reel then gradually falls down on its own.
My reel is adding too much line to the top & the bottom of the spool, how do I f8x this ? Thanks !
Take one out. If it reverses it too much, replace the one you take out with one that’s a smaller profile.
What if i have the opposite problem, that is to say i have less line on top than on the bottom
Add a shim from an old reel of the same size. A lot of people just make their own. Not so say any size (thickness) will work. May take some trail and error.
my penn reel has more on bottom and top and the middle has less its like an hourglass how i fix that one lol
Spending too much time down low and up top. The gearing must be worn down. What reel is it?
Nice and informative! Do you know a shop around richmond that would fix two eyelets on a rod?
I need to break a guide now 😂😂
Great 👍😃 thanks 👍
Absolutely!
You know the braid is old when it goes from dark green to fuzzy white! 😂😂😂
Hahah that braid was well past due for changing. Served it’s purpose though lol
My reel. Shimano fx c3000 did not come with extra shims. what do I use? I dont have old reels.
Some model reels don’t have extras. I would take the reel apart and see what size you are looking for. I’ve seen people make their own. Usually becomes too much of a headache getting the thickness right.
Do i take out the extra shims after spooling ?
No, if you take them back out after spooling, the original issue will remain.
Thank you for the video
No problem Tim!
My issue is the reel legit has no washers and It’s bottom spooling
Well in that case, prolly want to get a new reel. What reel is it?
Good info but video could have been 90 seconds instead of 7.5 minutes.
You’re not wrong.
You da man bro good fcken video🤣
Haha thanks for the support man! Much appreciated!!!
@@ZackBostick keep it up bro glad i found your yt channel👌
Hi my line keep spooling under the reel i searched the internet and cant figure it out
I am confused on what you mean.. if it’s literally getting caught under the spool, sounds like you’re using either very thick line and or over spooled it. Or that when retrieving you don’t have tension to the lure or bait. Could be a combo of very heavy mono mixed with retrieving very little weight.
@@ZackBostick I fixed it. The problem was I had too heavy line and too much on the reel.
Thanks
Welcome
Damn im screwed 😭
Haha why?
Thankyou x
Absolutely!
How am I supposed to unspool it?
Fellow Asian, I use another reel. The one that has line on it, set it down with the drag completely loosened. Run the line through another rod and tie it to the other reel. Winding it off the spooled reel and onto the spare reel.
So Daiwa engineering makes reverse taper spool and you defeat the purpose hmm…
Don’t over think it. Says for spinning reels. Not specifically Bg.
Broken reels huh? I fish hard, 60 years, I never broke a reel. Nothing, I did need a new handle once tho
thx
I had the same problem with the exact same reel, diawa sucks ass
Hahaha! I honestly like daiwa but yea, some models have certain issues pretty consistently lol
Rubberband 😆 o-ring maybe? 😂
O-Rings are used to keep a liquid or gas in 😂 We will go with BUSHING since your were confused to which part I was referring to 😆
@@ZackBostick a round bushing interesting 🤔 😆 😆 😆. I fixed mine with a stainless washer and a file..
@@ZackBostick bushbandring..
I am very confused bc I thought most bushings were round…maybe cylindrical but still round. Like bushings on suspension parts and such. I’m sure the stainless steel washer would work to replace the shim :)
Rubber band? O Ring.
Thanks. Sorry it was confusing you.
what if i dont have those spacers?
For what reel? They sell them online for pretty cheap. I have made them before buy wouldnt recommend.
@@ZackBostick Lol sorry i just got one off of a old reel and its now fixed thanks
@@papiohunter2172 heckkk yaaaa! Nicceeee
You can always increase the reduction between the first rotary wheel and the spool too to decrease the speed of the linear actuation
loose the gloves other than that very helpful.
Lose?
i wonder why its only a reel.and its smoth how on earth you put gloves in your hand its un necesary . . . .
❤️❤️❤️
Why don’t you take your gloves off
Sometimes the line is easier to see against gloves. I can send you hand pics if you’d like ;)
Or just buy a Shimano.
True! Last one I fixed did happen to be a small Shimano though. But yes, overall, shimano seem to be way less problematic
I got my reel second hand so I don’t have the box and the washers so what do I do? It’s a pflueger salt 080sw spinning reel
