  • Episode 608. Two very different, but strong Single Malt. The Bimber is an ex-Bourbon single cask which seem far more mature than it's age, while the Bruichladdich is a cask I've never had; Jurançon. Have you had either? #bimber #bruichladdich #whiskyneighbour

I heard really great things about that Bimber Canada Single Cask but have yet to try it. However I have a bottle of that Bruichladdich cracked and it's a really interesting Single Cask. I think the impact of the Bere Barley can still be felt which is pretty incredible given the Cask type it was in. A great edition of Sample Sunday Jon! Quite the contrast. Thanks for the video Neighbour 🥃

Thanks for dropping in. Cool you have this Bruichladdich. I did not give enough credit to the Bere barley, thankfully I have another dram in that sample! Cheers!

    Impossible!
Surely this must be a one off? Because NEVER in history has ANY whisk(e)y producer had even the tiniest bit of shadiness lurking in the offing.
And on that note, I've got some wickedly high potential, once in a lifetime opportunity, swamp land in Florida that I'm willing to let go to a discerning buyer at a heck of a great price...no controversy attached.
    Really.
    (Cash offers only, please)
Back to track....I'd be happy to have either (or both) in the glass. Will be keeping an eye out for Bimber's future releases. As for Bruichladdich, it's just good all round. Generally can't go wrong.
    Fresh week ahead! Cheers Jon...

Hello Jon! This Bimber single cask is an interesting one. It was like mango syrup and it had a spicy finish. Thank you for sharing this review. Cheers🥃!

I will pour another later today. I was getting sweet fruit, but more like peach. I'll see if Mango comes up!

Hi Jon from St Lazare, Quebec. Jurançon is an area of the South West of France. The vineyards are in or close to a city called Bearn. You may have heard of Bearnaise sauce. Anyway, some iof the white wine are sweet and similar to Sauterne wines. Some red wine coming out of the south West are Cahors and Madiran and wines that I particularly like. Robust, dark red and well rounded they are. Nice review as always. Really enjoy your channel. Take care.

Thank you for sharing your insight. I should have done more research before shooting, but it is good to learn what I can now! Sounds like a wondeful region. Thank you too for the kind words.

Check out Whisky Lovers Society and see Gert and his delightful adult daughter trying scotch for the first time! She nosed and tasted 3 amazing scotch whiskies! She did so well for a newbie!! 🙂

Bimber has some controversy but it can happen to any company. I agree that the association no longer exists. We can all know people who have committed criminal actions - if they atone - I am very supportive. I ignore this Bimber controversy. From what I have heard from good friends, much more 'in the know," the making of this whisky had nothing to do with the individual we are addressing here. I love this Bimber English Whisky and I adore Bruichladdich. Fascinating casking! It can't help but win out for me here! My palette is going through a weird time! I do think Bimber is hefty in price but what else in new these days with whisky?! It's sad as so many people miss out on superb whisky. I dislike that so much. I like it when enthusiasts can participate and enjoy. I am all for boycotting when it's necessary and I do out of a sense of strong integrity, but I think it's absolutely fine to buy Bimber with a good conscience. Fabulous thoughts Jon as always! So enjoyable! I am excited to be on my way to St. Albert soon - on the 16h!!!!!! I am not only an all in mom, but also an all in aunt and I will be spending a big birthday with my kids and husband and my niece Jenn and her husband and 2 adorable kiddos - 15 and 12 - in the Catholic school system in St. Albert, AB. I am pleased with their school experiences although I am always rooting for the public school system!! I hope for good weather and time to see cousins in Edmonton, right next door!! 🙂

@christinecamley thank you for sharing your thoughts and insights into the Bimber story. I do not know anyone with close ties, but what I have read would align. The team making the whisky are passionate, dedicated whisky folk making great, craft spirit. So cool you are coming out to this way! Weather should be great for enjoying the outside. I hope you have a great family visit!!

@@WhiskyNeighbour Thanks Jon! I will be looking for an interesting scotch. I was about to start a journey with a family member who needs to be completely alcohol-free for several months during cancer treatment and sadly she hasn't been able to. So I occasionally partake - in huge moderation!! I agree with all your amazing thoughts! We are usually on the same page. I feel like AB is a second home! I grew up visiting aunts, uncles and cousins so often in Edmonton, Rosedale, Smoky Lake and Calgary and I have deeply special memories! I miss my niece and I thought she'd be back when she moved to Edmonton about 20 years ago for a job in social work, but she met her partner and she married him and had 2 precious daughters and to say I adore them all is an understatement!!

I've tried 4 Bimbers... and didn't like any of them even slightly! Unfortunately, I bought a bottle before I had the chance to taste (FOMO got the better of me) and have been trying to give it away ever since - nobody seems to be stupid enough to take me up on the offer!
Jurançon is pronounced something like "zhooro'sso''" (the "zh" is like the "s" in "measure", the "a" is half way between "a" and "o", the cedilla makes the "c" a soft one, like an "s", and the "n" in each case is only half-pronounced, making the "a" and "o" somewhat nasal). There's probably a better way to explain it, but hopefully that will do for now.

@@andrewbutler7681 That's rough. I genuinely enjoyed this one. Yes, young, but not off balance for me. Thanks for the pronunciation! Cheers!
