    Jason, my experience is the older a scotch gets, the more subtle and rounded it becomes. Often more delicate. I think bourbon drinkers have a problem with that as it is always in your face full of strong spices. Anyway as far as older age whiskies go their prices have jumped tremendously in the last few years. I good test i always use is to come up with a price/year normalized to 40% ABV so you can compare cost/per year. (Price/(ABV/.4)/Years. By far an away Scotch offers a much greater value than Bourbon does when you look at this way. In the last few years bourbon has really gouged the consumer on lower age whiskies using subsidized corn no less. So if I pay $240 for the PC18 it works out to be about $9.82 per year. Not so bad. My Old Forester 1920 comes in at $10.43 at the prices I paid. There is a premium for older age whiskies for sure and some of that makes sense since it is a long time to your ROI + angel share losses. I think the higher proof point on the 18 makes it worth it, if you really enjoy the dram.

    I love Bruichladdich and scotch. I feel the unpeated 18 is good but has no wow factor. At around $200 I'd recommend it if you like Bruichladdich or unpeated Islay, but probably would not buy a backup unless the price comes down.

      I have both and I think both are must buys. The PC10 is immediately impressive with its fully flavor. The Laddie 18 has subtle complexity that fully develops with time (in the glass and also as the bottle has more air) and a bit of water.

    I can't wait to try the Port Charlotte 18. For 18 year ex bourbon non peated scotch, I still think that Loch Lomond 18 is still the gold standard. Especially when it comes to value.

    Hey Jason, in general Scotch is more expensive than bourbon overall so I'm not surprised at the price. Also, Macallan 18 is $420, Dalmore 18 $359, Bunnahabhain 18 $359, Aberlour 18 $200, Glendronach 18 $309, Oban 18 $200 so I would say the price is about right in today's market. I would pay the $230 for the PC for sure over all of the ones mentioned. I'm also a Bruichladdich fan boy. Thank you for another great review. Cheers!🤙

    Port Charlotte 18 is great but for the money tough to beat the 10 yr old. The Octomore 14.1 is worth the extra bucks!🎉

    Thanks for putting this together, Jason! I'm primarily a Scotch guy, so I was pumped to find and watch this. All in all, you do a real solid analysis. If you get a chance, I'd love to see you do Dalmore Cigar Malt. Dalmore tends to have an incredibly robust flavor. If you haven't tried anything in the Dalmore catalog, it is definitely worth your time (at least in my opinion). Thanks again!

    Excellent reviews. Love the Scotch reviews. Laddie 18 is worth $200 IMO. Almost every 18 year Scotch is now $200-$300 and hardly any of them are at 50% ABV. It has subtle complexity that takes a while to fully appreciate. The PC18 also worth the price and instantly impresses with its explosive flavor. Love how these 2 bottles are at the different ends of the spectrum. Dark vs Light

    Always happy to see malt from Scotland here, Jason. Loved my Bruichladdich 18 except the bottle had a leak obviously 😂😅. The Port Charlotte sounds great too and happy to see they have very different cask makeups. As to value, for what Bruichladdich charges for many of the special releases they have done going back quite a few years, many of which are single digit age statements, these are priced well. If you look at the independent Bruichladdich/Port Charlotte bottles, they are way more. Comparing to other things available from Scotland it's high, but in the context of this distillery they are not bad. Especially if you include Octomore in the discussion. Cheers

    Thanks for the review, Jason. I have never been disappointed by a Bruichladdich product. Always have a Classic Laddie, PC10, and Octomore on hand and open. Black Art 4 is probably my favorite whisky of all time. Having said that, with how much I like the entry level bottles, I am not sure I need to spend the extra $s on these new 18 year releases.

    Very nice review. I have only had the Port Charlotte Islay Barley 2013. I know it is an 8 year Scotch at $90, but it is very good. So by extrapolating, the 18 year should cost just over $200. So unless the 18 is WOW! I think I would stick with Islay Barley 2013. Slàinte Mhath!

    I'm with you, Jason. I love the combination of heavy peat and sherry influence. I think if you asked 5 years ago, those prices were quite steep for scotch. Now... it seems like the bourbon boom has spilled into scotch and it's uncommon to see an 18 yr age statement much below $180 - 200. I liked the PC 18 enough that I backed it up, if that tells you anything, lol!😂

    1) More Scotch content, really enjoy hearing your takes. 2) PC18 is $199 and BL18 is $179 here in CO. 3) PC10 being one of my favorite pours, I though I’d absolutely love the 18. And the nose on it is insane, top 3 of all time for me. But the palate unfortunately was too closed off and I didn’t get any of that fruit or sweetness, just a lot of leather. I’ll have to experiment with water, but unfortunately so far it hasn’t landed for me. For $199 I sure hope that changes. Glad you enjoyed it though!

    My thoughts on Bourbon and Scotch is I’m in Ky and to me I have a hard time paying over $100.00 for bourbon because I’m so close to the distilleries. Scotch comes from a lot father away. It’s hard for me to pay more for something I know for me is not going to be better than Islay Scotch. Definitely would love to have the Port Charlotte 18 and would love to see a Ledaig or a Talisker review.

They can no longer get the grain whisky they use in this blend and are going out with a bang. They hired an incredible artist for a special label and are celebrating the end of this great and unique blend. Compass Box has been an innovative and fantastic blender over the past 20 years. They are the Barrel Craft Spirits of the Scotch world. Your take on this interesting release would be great to see.

  • @hanqb10
    @hanqb10 3 місяці тому

    On specs alone, the Bruichladdich 18 is about an even value. 18 years with 50%+ ABV is a steal these days for $200 in scotch. But if I drank it blind I’d mistake it for a 12-15 year 46% Glencadam ($60-$80). The PC18 has the specs AND delivers an amazing flavor experience that I think is actually undervalued. Beats the Ardbeg 19 which retails for $299.

    • @steveno7058
      @steveno7058 2 місяці тому

      I don’t think a 12-15 year Glencadam has nearly as much complexity as the Laddie 18. Especially with adding a bit of water.

    My prices are a bit out dated(most recent of these was purchased Feb 2023), but here are a few top notch 18 year old single malts(I would put any of these against the laddich 18 and PC18) that I have purchased for what I would consider a "reasonable" price. These have all been purchased between 2020~2023. Glen Scotia 18-$69.98(I came across this sale at a local store back in Sep. 2020), Arran 18-$99.99, Ledaig 18-$103.26, and Deanston 18-$92.68(these prices are sans tax). However, I've observed a sharp increase of maybe 30+% in prices across the board in the last 18 months or so. By the time we see these bottles on our shelves, between all the import tax and distributor pork added on, they're probably 70%~100% more expensive than purchasing in Scotland...Scotch prices are going up anyway due to the rise in popularity, but its even more bloated in the USA. The fact that US bourbon prices are often even higher than comparable Scotches(if it were possible to compare) is an absolute insanity.

    • @steveno7058
      @steveno7058 2 місяці тому

      Also keep in mind the 18s you mention are at 46%. The Laddie 18 is 50% and PC18 is 54%+

      @@steveno7058 Sure, but $200+ is still not a good value for an 18 year old. It may be worth it, if it's a bottle you really like, but I think something around $150 would be a fair price.
