I have super nostalgia for the Master System version. It was one of the first games i ever played. And the music in the master system version coupled with the title screen and monsters on the first level kinda frightened me as a kid. Now it just reminds me of the good old days when cyclop mammoths and langolier look alike enemies freaked me out.
This game is great. I played the SMS one and the Genesis one, but never the one for Saturn. Just to let you know this game has somewhat of a succesor (or a game that was inspired upon this one); it's called Sin & Punishment 2 and it's for the Wii. It feels just the same as playing Space Harrier. I dunno, that's just how it feels to me. For those who haven't play it yet, give it a try. I feel S&P2 pays a lot of tribute to the Space Harrier's style and gameplay, and I just love it!
You know the one thing that many people overlook? It's that SEGA produces some of the best gaming audio in history. I mean, you can practically hear one tune and automatically determine which game it comes from, just like the rings of the Sonic games. My personal favorite: GAME OVER YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sega might not make game consoles any more but they still make great games like Bayonetta and the Total War games. This game was and still is epic. Sega fan for life.
Love this game! You don't know how much you love it until you play it and keep progressing through levels seeing all the craziness. Works great with the 3D controller and just bought a mission stick today, can't wait to try it with that one too.
@@hotcoffeebreath lol, yeah the mission stick made the game more fun and felt more like an arcade experience for sure. However, I could play the game better with the 3D controller (nights into dreams analog controller). Still worth it. I enjoyed playing Night Stricker S on the Saturn even more so with the mission stick.
@@VirtualRobotsRevolt awesome thanks for the response! Very tempted to pick one up... Currently have the Japanese Virtua stick in all its microswitch glory but would be cool to enter the fantasy zone in analogue too. But I'm not really an after burner fan (don't hate me) so it'd literally just be space harrier I'd be getting it for... A bit excessive maybe but hey...
Fantastic video. The PS3 version on the Megadrive Ultimate Collection is really good but your are right that this one is even better. Don't have it one the Saturn yet so I'll have to add it to my collection of things to buy. Still love the Master System version though. For me the game is still shrouded in a hazy cloud of nostalgia. I know it's slow and choppy but there is definitely something endearing about it. The SMS struggles but I love it all the more for just giving it a go.
I'm glad this game is finally getting some love. I played the hell out of it at the arcade back in the day. Thing is, this game was not at all popular. Until this day I was starting to think that I was the only person to ever play this game. Anyway, thanks CGR.
You can also play arcade perfect versions of this,afterburner2 & outrun on the dreamcast when you go into an arcade in SHENMUE,& also superhang on in SHENMUE 2.
I'm thinking this is going to be my next saturn game I order online, I never got too into this game but I love the old school Sega arcade games and I already have outrun and afterburner II for my saturn so I might as well get this one too. Good review man.
I totally agree, it looks and sounds great. The Saturn version is fantastic. However, why did they EVER release a game from 1985 on Sega Saturn? It makes no sense to me. If it came in a collection of classic games or was an unlockable on another game, it would make sense.
@cyx7 I know right? It's a pretty decent collection. Yet GameSpot gives it a 5 or a 3 lol (then again a lot of underscored games on GameSpot I enjoy, but mostly in the 7s or 8s). I thought the Golden Axe remake was also good, if a little short. Yeah, I wish they'd do more Sega Ages remakes aswell. There was one of the first Streets Of Rage that either came out in Japan or was going to but was cancelled. Though there is Streets Of Rage Mobile, which was the first game again with a SOR2 look.
@IceyOnly Oh wow, I bought that for the Sega Ages 2600 version of Virtua Racing and loved all the other remakes. I don't get all the hate Sega fans give it. Just wish they'd release the others, like Phantasy Star Generations 1&2 and the Galaxy Force 2 remake in a collection stateside.
They released the Master System version on VC because the VC has a memory limit, which most disc games exceed, hence why Sonic CD for VC would be impossible, yet Ocarina of Time, SM64 and SF64 are all on there. CD sound takes up TONS of space, an so does FMV. The 32X version should have been put on there, though...
The WiiVC does have the arcade version available now, but at one time the only version available was the SMS version. I think the reason the SMS version was released first was because it was easier to emulate than anything else, and Sega wanted to get some money from the game sooner rather than later. The arcade version probably took longer to get emulated accurately. I don't think the Wii emulation is always plug-and-play, they sometimes have to do some debugging before a game can be released.
I have this on the Sega Classics Collection for my PS2 and everything is full 3D. And I find it a bit easier because the higher frame rate allows you to better anticipate where projectiles are going. Then again, I've only played that and the Master System version of Space Harrier.
Outrun IS on Shenmue(I was playing outrun on it just last week) & shenmue 2,at least it is on the Dreamcast version of Shenmue along with all the other games I mentioned, the only game that's on the 2nd Shenmue that isn't on the 1st is super hang on.
I have the remake on the PS2's Sega Classics Collection, which graphically improves even on the Saturn/32X version, which is still great. I remember when I had Space Harrier on the Spectrum. It had the trademark weird shading colours lol Still quite fun though. I also have the Genesis version but I'm not sure if a game within a game (Shenmue) counts. :P
@hepper95 Play Vanquish or Sonic Colors. Those are recent sega GEMS. Though I can agree with you its the exception and not the rule for sega, its just that the modern sega does'nt quite follow the heavy metal urban arcade ninja style that their team used to put into everything.
I always thought those Sega Ages discs for Saturn were compilation discs, not discs containing only one game from the past. It seems like a missed opportunity to not include more than one game on them given that games like Space Harrier don't take up more then 600 MBs.
@alec1382 I don't really care for those and neither should you. As long as he still does video game reviews, it's all good. Although I agree, Ultra Fail is kinda weak.
"Get ready!" When I hear that, I'm instantly transported back to the mid eighties, and it makes me feel whole again.
I played this game on shenmue as a kid and fucking loved it, awesome game

This was released on the SATURN in a SEGA AGES pack which included outrun & afterburner 2 aswell.
there's Sega Ages for Sega Saturn's includes this one.Out Run and After Burner🐀

Hey, 5 years late to comment but hi did the mission stick affect the game?
@@hotcoffeebreath lol, yeah the mission stick made the game more fun and felt more like an arcade experience for sure. @@hotcoffeebreath also worked great with Galaxy Force.
And panzer dragoon 1 and 2.
This is a great game still holds up today they still rock it up in the laundry mat 50 cents
This and other SEGA arcade games should be released on GameRoom! Imagine if they modeled the Space Harrier arcade cabinet for that.
Thanks for the Falcore Bonus round! LOL
Saturn is basically God in a box.

It's the SEGA Saturn's sound chip that does the trick, its superior quality makes the difference.
I had this for turbo grafix..I loved it...

According to wikipedia Classic Game Room is the best thing to ever happen in your life. Sources may vary however.
Shenmue 1 = Space Harrier / Hang On
Shenmue 2 = After Burner / Out Run
You can also play arcade perfect versions of this,afterburner2 & outrun on the dreamcast when you go into an arcade in SHENMUE,& also superhang on in SHENMUE 2.
WHOA! On the tittle screen for space harrier
There's a rick dom from Gundam!!
Mark, you played this version quite well
Saturn versions, the HD versions of the past
I'm thinking this is going to be my next saturn game I order online, I never got too into this game but I love the old school Sega arcade games and I already have outrun and afterburner II for my saturn so I might as well get this one too. Good review man.

it's the 4th video you made of this game and I'm still not tired of it, looks like good old brainless shooter fun
also STAGE 4 BE TRIPPIN BALLS

/watch?v=ARdIAc59cGo - You can have these ones instead.
@VanillaElephantEnt GENIUS!!!
I have the second version for the genesis. And I would love this game!
But I don't have a Saturn :l
@MrTheblock24
Yer this is true. At lest they are Publishing games that are 99 percent better than what most people are putting out.
Outrun IS on Shenmue(I was playing outrun on it just last week) & shenmue 2,at least it is on the Dreamcast version of Shenmue along with all the other games I mentioned, the only game that's on the 2nd Shenmue that isn't on the 1st is super hang on.

"LUCASIA," otherwise known as Naboo.
@pilgrimMj Yes, Mark has reviewed it on only 4 out of 17 platforms it has been released on. We want 32X version review.
This is a re-release from a 1985 game... Saturn games looks exactly like PSX games
Don't forget the Game Gear version! ^_^ Like the Master System one but harder to see, but it does have passwords!
I think Space Harrier 3D with the glasses on the master system is better!
it also was on shenmue! i played it a LOT
@hepper95
Play Vanquish or Sonic Colors. Those are recent sega GEMS. Though I can agree with you its the exception and not the rule for sega, its just that the modern sega does'nt quite follow the heavy metal urban arcade ninja style that their team used to put into everything.
All those reviews for those Space Harrier ports yet CGR still avoids reviewing Shenmue! Does CGR know you can play Space Harrier in Shenmue?
Awesome review! Thanks man!
My thumb is getting tired just watching this Hahaha.
+Broyale26 Sounds like your playing with yourself.
Daniel F
With a voice like that, how couldn't you?
Mark's vocal delivery is like porn.
HEY! At 4:05 it's a VF-1 from Macross (Robotech)!!!
Much better than the Master Baitor System
Supposedly the Panzer Dragoon games were made to be like Space Harrier. I definitely see it... fly around and SHOOT HAHA! All that is to it.
I played it in Shenmue.
hello mark everytime i go youtube i go and check to see if u have made a review on dead space 2 . i hope u will soon!
If your talking about the sequal to the original Outrun I haven't come across that on the 2nd Shenmue!
This version and the Dreamcast (Shenmue) version is Arcade Perfect.
While you're on Space Harrier , you might want to do a quick video on Bayonetta's homage to this game. Maybe on CGR ULTRA FAIL?
I always thought those Sega Ages discs for Saturn were compilation discs, not discs containing only one game from the past. It seems like a missed opportunity to not include more than one game on them given that games like Space Harrier don't take up more then 600 MBs.
you should take a look at OFF-WORLD and clock work knight!
i have it on the sega AGES collection, it's the same game but with 3d models
32X Version, CMON!!! It needs a review too!
hey he uploaded it today 3/4/2011! i was there!
@pilgrimMj I think it is a Sega's version of StarFox 64.
Boom ! Want !
Pretty sure this is the same version, on the 3ds virtual console and not the genesis one. That's from checking the eshop images display.
The 3DS version is my personal favorite version
0:21 Is that a Dom from the Gundam series? It sure looks like it.
This was comfy, before comfy was a thing
LOL Fancy pants and moon boots.
Now review the Sega Saturn port of Outrun!
@andoc I'm not usually that hateful in my comments, but I would have thought he'd learn after the first time, and if not, at least the second time.
Out Run arcade is on Shenmue 2
Now, if SEGA agreed to release Space Harrier (MS) for the Virtual Console, why could we not get a Vectrex version? Now THAT would be fancypants!
@alec1382 I don't really care for those and neither should you. As long as he still does video game reviews, it's all good. Although I agree, Ultra Fail is kinda weak.
@andoc What? No, no misunderstanding. I was just adding on to my previous comment.
@VanillaElephantEnt he might as well review the motorcycle game as well haha
Yu Suzuki is the m'fing man. Can't wait for Shenmue 3.
Check out the "Yu Suzuki Game Works" on Dreamcast, it has Space Harrier.
@MrStephen182 They didn't make either of those, they published them.
@VanillaElephantEnt what a swell idea man i hope he does that.
@VanillaElephantEnt That. Mark really needs to review Shenmue. A review with ∞ parts.
Nice.
left the shemue arcade version, and the bayonetta version?
space harrier kick ass
@TheChocodip ok, you're God now.
mark is superior to all other sapient beings
oh my goood
For the Saturn, how's does Japanese version and the US Sega Ages version compare?
Sega is the best..
@alec1382 If you don't want to see it, don't watch it. Mark doesn't have an obligation to give you what YOU want.
Or the Sega ages 2 which includes it.
U should do a "lets play" video...
if there is some way to make space any harrier...human kind has yet to devise it
Hahaha, I just got finished playing Shenmue, only togo to the arcade to play SPACE HARRIER..
I'm still not gettting a sense of what Space Harrier is about. Please review it a few more times.
Please compare the Saturn version to the 32X version.
what about Space harrier 3d SMS love it
this game looks like one big acid trip...
still think those flying heads look creepy lol
will you do a famicom SH review???
now how about space harrier 32x?
space harrier should make a remake in real 3d!
why is the first level named after the creater of 4chan?
Watching the patters when he is going through the tunnel like part is giving me a headache.
