- Former Supreme Court judge Lord Jonathan Sumption has criticised the government's approach to the coronavirus pandemic, saying it has employed fear as a means to justify its actions.
Speaking with talkRADIO's Julia Hartley-Brewer, he warned that Downing Street could hold on to its emergency powers after there is no need for them: "The problem is that fear is the main pillar of every authoritarian government. Fear has been skilfully and I fear deliberately employed throughout this crisis."
The soldiers of the past must be spinning in their graves at how easily the British public have rolled over and surrendered their hard fought freedom, we're a disgrace to these brave men and women.
I've used the exact same statement, I really believe that while they pay lip service to the poppy appeal and remembrance day they are systematically destroying the very rights and freedoms that our grandparents fought and died for, so yes those young men would weep in their grave to see what is happening now 😢

Around one month ago I saw 26,000 was the number of deaths due to lockdowns. Must be higher now, and will go up rapidly the more this goes on.

I know of 2 people who have died and have CV19 on their death certificate but had underlying health problems previously.

You cannot eat, can barely drink, and are beyond caring whether you live or die. You are incapable of leaving the house and no-one, other than your family, witnesses your suffering. Anything that differs from this and involves coughing, spluttering and being upright is a cold.

Im afraid they do. The shift is so stark now, it's appalling. As he said in his Cambridge Union speech we haven't had our freedom taken away, we have surrendered it.
My experience is that about 70% are in favour of lockdown. People are highly susceptible to propaganda. They believe this is an existential threat and are in favour of using the armour to disperse social gatherings. I always thought of dystopia as a wicked government bullying and terrorizing its people, but the real dystopia here is that most people want it.

I think just people wearing them now would stop the moment the government told them too even, again, without any scientific backing. I’m from a town in Hampshire and I know so many people who have died this year of alcoholism, drug overdoses, heart attacks and cancer I know of only one person who has died of covid.

Lord Sumption deserves the highest of honours, in my opinion. He has been a rare voice of reason and clarity from the start. His comments were the only source of comfort to me at the outset. I felt that if someone of his standing and knowledge was voicing concerns I was supported rather than isolated in my view of events. He effectively helped to balance my mental health in a terrifying situation (terrifying not because of the virus but the very real threat of subjugation by a group of Despotic politicians and their willingly ignorant minions).
I don't have Lord Sumption's impressive qualifications but I could have told you that. What we need is someone to tell us how to lawfully resist all this.
Thanks Lord Sumption for speaking the truth on this. I pray you try to get the House of Lords to see sense in this, get courage and speak out to stop it.
It's nice that all those influential people are speaking up but how is it actually helping? What are they doing that can change the course the government has taken? All Europe is in lockdown because even countries like Britain have given up on standing up for common sense. Only talking is not enough!

My 93-year-old mother in law lives in a care home 5 minutes away from us. Since February she has only been allowed half a dozen 30-minute visits by one family member and that was just after first lockdown. Is that what Boris calls saving her life cos I can assure you she would not agree. We are not battery hens and he has no right to treat us like we are.

I absoluetly love listening to these debates on Talk Radio. It is one of the few media outlets that give a balanced sensible view on all this. I personally do not deny that COVID is a 'thing', however, the response is hysterical and completely disproportionate. I do not understand why people have allowed themselves to be so frightened by this. Logical reasonable process is the way to deal with this, not knee jerk reactions based on clearly false data. It really is almost unbelievable.
It's certainly stopped us talking about Prince Andrew and co.
