- "There was a real risk that because I'd been around for so long in government that I became the sort of ugly face of 14 years of Tory misrule."
Michael Gove sits down to his Exit Interview with Matt Chorley, revealing the highs and lows of his political career, what happened on the election night the Tories lost 251 seats, and how it can rebuild.
Then, the tables turn and Michael Gove conducts Matt Chorley's Exit Interview on his final Times Radio show.

The damage this man has done to the UK and still getting a platform in the media!
it's useful to understand them if you want to keep them out.
Yet we still give Tony Blair a platform. I’m not sure silencing everyone is they way forward.
It's The Times, owned by Murdoch. What did you expect?
From the times.
They ceased to be a serious news outlet long ago
Gove is a major part of the problems the country faces.
Gove realised he couldn't win his seat, and decided it was time to look for more lucrative employment.
💯
But senior Tory MPs change their seats and move around the country all the time. Many Tory MPs in 2023 would have liked to change to a safer seat than the one they were in, given the opportunity. So why didn’t Gove simply ask Sunak to put him in a safer seat for the 2024 election?
@@timonsolus He will make far more money doing the news rounds!

Well, he's not really "around" any more.

Consistent incompetence and dishonesty from top to bottom. And Brexit.
They lost because they carried out a referendum result? Surely it would've been worse for them if they ignored the vote, look st what happened to the lib dems fighting to rejoin and ignore the result
Let's stop giving these traitors to democracy an excuse, these so called politicians care about one thing, THEMSELVES, the enemies of the people of the U.K. are these self centred politicians of all sides, they all showed their true colour when trying to oveturn the largest democratic decision in U.K. history, they should not be allowed to stand in something they obviously do not believe in.
Nothing wrong with Brexit; it was the saboteurs throughout parliament that caused the failure
Not to mention....Gove?
Agree totally. And Gove was among the worst of them because he has the intelligence to know what they were doing. In my opinion he should serve a custodial sentence along with other.
It was a perfect storm of being seen as too left-wing by some, as too right-wing by others, and as incompetent and chaotic by everyone.
👍 spot on - exactly! They were a party of “ Theresa May’s “ ie couldn’t get anything right / all decisions incompetent and wrong .
That seems to be the narrative they want put out there. The biggest thing on people’s minds is the dishonesty and being incompetent along with a disregard for everyone’s needs. That’s nothing like the narrative you put forward.
people who think they are too left wing should reconsider their life choices.
A perfect and succinct analysis.

I'm looking forward to the most Machiavellian , dishonest and corrupt British Politician of our day, Michael 'Pob' Gove in Court for his august role in the VIP PPE Lane scandal.

Aye, the very worst monster of them them all. And my mothers friend remembers him as a child in Aberdeenshire. Complete monster.
we can only hope these disgusting people are brought to justice. Unfortunatly Gove is protected by his puppet master Murdock
Michael Grove levelled down not up.. He was my MP in Surrey Heath and was absolutely useless.
Experts have had enough of him.
LOL. Genius.
He looks exactly like that bloke who told the country that Brexit would bring no change in our working relationship with the EU. 😂😂

I like how he said how the people there actually cared. Do the folks in other departments not??
Listen to this man carefully: this is why the Conservative Party is in such trouble -- blunder after blunder, led by the nose by the public service.
Corrupt self-serving incompetent brexit austerity you can name so many reasons
Mass immigration austerity. £9 Million a day just for illegals.
Even legal immigration 72% of Somalians are paid to live in the UK by the government. Social housing and benefits. Net drain on the economy.

I would like to thank Michael for his support with a £90 million housing grant to Blackpool back in March, it was a huge investment and largely came about because of his support behind the scenes. The impact that money will have on improving many lives will be huge in the years to come.
You’re probably owed £900 million over the past 40 years given the centering of wealth on London. You’ve been robbed.

Pity he wasn’t self aware in government
Maybe I'm mistaken, but I get the impression he was never a full-throated supporter of Boris Johnson, so for me he's not the worst of them.

You think that Blair wasn't Murdoch's c***sucker in chief??
I bet most Tories would rather be in power, in the EU and in a stable party, rather than be out of power, out of the EU, and part of a disintegrating party. Brexit gave the Tories the latter situation
Yeah, they thought they could lie and con people to vote to leave the EU and still maintain power. Reality hit hard.
They were the dog that caught the car
yes even the britexit tories shot themselves in the foot
Yes, the Tories would be happy to go back to 2014.
Humility and honesty something impossible to find in Conservative Party politics.
He is lying through his teeth
You were going to be booted out Portillo style. Your ego wouldn't have been able to cope with it!
He forget to mention the 14 year's of austerity measures that did this country untold damage.
He’s out now, he has no need to tell lies - but it's so ingrained into him, that he just can't help himself.
I fear the lasting impact of Michael Gove will be that he is remembered as one of the last honest Tories. I have little agreement with his politics but I do believe Michael Gove was in it for the right reasons and a much better public servant than many of his Conservative colleagues !!
Agreed. Gove would have made a better Prime Minister than Boris Johnson or Liz Truss.
In the UK less than 7% of children go to private school and yet nearly 70% of ministers in the last Tory government went to private school..
You have succinctly underlined the advantage of private schooling.
Won't be missed.
He is to blame too. Blind and deaf to what was going on in the world.
it is so much worse when you see Gove - and others- suddenly when they are gone start to be so sincere and honest - and you realise if they are like this now - they MUST have been aware of how many lies they told and told deliberately for the sake of power-they way they defended the indefensible on so many occasions. now for the purpose of some sort of credability they get a platform to speak - write some book - etc. i hate these people - not a word of apology for how much they have damaged the country - not the rich - just the majority of ordinary people who have suffered intolerably by tory rule -
I’m going to miss Mat Chorley on Time Radio. It’s been a very informative and entertaining ride.

It's just a bit annoying that someone who caused so much damage to this country, can swan on to Times Radio and make some easy money.
Really interesting what and how he talks now that he's no longer a politician. It's quite refreshing to actually see a politician let their guard down and not just regurgitate party lines.
He is a liar. All the tories same.
Silly sweeping statements that mean nothing. Why not explain these claims ?
According to the polls a lot of support was lost during partygate, another chunk was lost during Liz Truss, and more eroded away during Rishi Sunak's tenure.
And the polls accurately predicted the final result, so I don't think there's any good reason to think that they don't also point towards the causes.
With a result this bad, there's plenty of blame to go around, and the idea that you need to give a 'It was just due to X' explanation is childishly simplistic.
Actually Rishi Sunak did a good job - when compared directly to Liz Truss.
If Truss had not been replaced, and had remained Prime Minister until the election, I’m sure that the Tories would now have only 40 seats, not 120.
@@timonsolus I agree that things would probably be worse if she had stayed.
My point is just that Boris and Liz and Rishi all did a good job of losing some support, that you can't have a result this awful without multiple problems, and most of all, that whilst you and I may have certain opinions on this person or that, or this policy direction or that, we don't need to guess how other people felt, as the opinion polls actually did a solid job of showing what things influenced what people.
"I left because I knew I was going to get slaughtered and I am a slimy weasel and a coward"

Gove, the Worm Tongue of the Consevative party!
We want our money back Michael!
Terrible result only for the conservative party, rest of the country will benefit from this.
Failing upwards personified.
If he had a spine he’d stand up and be honest when he was in office.
Does Mr Gove at least understand that all politicians failure to update the building regulations led directly to the Grenville Tower tragedy?
Is that actually true though? I thought that the Grenville Tower cladding didn’t even meet the existing building safety regulations in place at the time… let alone the improved regulations put in place after the disaster.
A lot of them stood down at the GE because they were terrified they'd be booted out by the voters and they're replacement candidates wrestling humiliated
Well, to be fair, after having been in government for 14 years, being relegated to the back benches for the next 10 doesn’t seem very attractive. About 100 Labour MPs stood down just before the 2010 general election, because Gordon Brown was an unpopular Prime Minister and it looked like Labour was going to lose.
The civil servants were experts ! God forbid you should listen to them!
Between 2007 and 2024 guess which politician held the following positions: Shadow Minister for Housing and Planning, Shadow Minister of State for Children, Schools and Families, Secretary of State for Education, Chief Whip (Commons), Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury, Secretary of State for Justice, Lord Chancellor, Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Minister for the Cabinet Office, Chancelor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Minister for Intergovernmental Relations and Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities? Step forward Michael Gove. It is probably not an exaggeration to say that no other Tory individually did more to ruin the country over such an extended period of time than this serpentine, overambitious, self serving creature. And THAT is saying something.
A.T.A.B. Stop giving these thieves & liars air time!!
Awful party, awful people. Great electoral result for the country
What constraints, by the EU, completely delusional. Britain was on the top table making decisions in the EU. Now if you want to sell into the EU you have to comply with thier regulations and we are no longer making those regulations we have to comply with them. Great move.
I think he was concerned about his involvement in d VIP lane. Best leave know and hope no one notices. 🤓
100% Weasel.
They made promises they had no intention of keeping.
Good Riddance.
I am not going to listen to him, because I "have had enough of experts".
Not honest about anything in his life.
So, he's learned nothing.
Gove said "the elctorate moved away from us", but that's actually looking at it the wrong way round - to a large extent, the Tories became extreme: chasing ex-UKIP voters, moving to the right and deserting the middle ground. They moved away from their core electorate, traditional middle-class voters, and pandered to the right-wing and the think-tanks who don't want to pay any taxes, privatise the NHS and get rid of most benefits. You can still see this is the calls to ditch the EHCR, the support for the Rwanda plan, the possibility of Patel or Braverman becoming leader. Until they move back to the middle, they won't win a general election.
The majority of the tories stepped down because they knew the writing was on the wall
He decided to leave because he couldn't face his own Portillo moment.
I didn't vot conservative because they never built enough homes, or helped renters for all of their years in Goverment. They only made different financial schemes that helped Banks and house builders.
No government builds homes. I certainly wouldn't buy one if I saw Gove building it. People will only build houses if there is money in it.
Again not a Conservative but Harold Macmillan and other Conservative Leaders built a lot of Social Housing in the 1950's and 60's and shame so many former Labour voters brought them in the Thatcher years.
@@russellbradley454 he didn't build any. Half were built by local authorities, the other were built by his mates construction companies. Margaret Thatcher put paid to the former, the later would be kinda unpopular as a follow up to the COVID ppe scandal
Good luck Mr. Chorely. If Dickens were creating characters today, you would be one of them. Probably interviewing the three ghosts from A Christmas Carol.
Why is he even given a platform
Many lifetime conservative voters did not want brexit and could not vote for a party now dominated by brexiters
yes we need to align with our EU neighbors as soon as possible even though remembership if ever is years off as for gove he was one of the liars that told us brexit was going to make us all better off
Years after the Good Friday Agreement Gove was still raging against the Northern Ireland peace process in his newspaper column. This typifies the man, and so many of his ilk: as long as it's the poor, the marginalised, or non-WASP types far away being negatively affected go ahead and dish it out to them.
It was fun to see Matt Chorley put on the spot for a bit.
The country's infinitely better off to see the back of this fool, can talk his way out of anything and acheived absolutely nothing.

I am a huge critic of what happened. And Gove is so reflective of this. He was a a brilliant education secretary. He really was. Look at outcomes and standards when he was minister. Brilliant! But it all went to his head. Lockdowns. The whole green thing. He shd have been health minister, keep his head down and tried to fix health as he did for a while in education. But power goes to the head and he lost touch with his core electorate and what it wanted. He is very clever and I hope will reflect on what happened and come out of this a better person and perhaps even return in some capacity.
As an aberdonian he’s an embarrassment and also a backstabber .
Gove always came across as a bit of a sneak…
I'm pretty sure I don't need 15 minutes of Michael Gove to work out why the Tories lost...
Gove would kean any way the wind blows, he's no better than any of the others
This is one expert I've had enough of.
His war on landlords was the start of the end for the Tories for me. I can’t stand him. Reform all the way.
There are many bad landlords out there who need to be driven out of the market. Landlords who refuse to carry out repairs and evict tenants who ask for repairs, for example.
The Tories thought the answer to falling popularity was to move to the centre and become Blair’s New Labour. It wasn’t, the answer was to move to the Thatcherite right. They would still have probably lost, but not by much, and Reform wouldn’t have happened
Gonna miss ya Matt. All the best 👍.
Why is mr Gove sitting in your studio? Hasn’t he done enough damage already?
All self inflicted damage . Truss was like labour’s secret weapon that sealed the tories fate.
About a dozen or so names in the frame for conjuring defeat over a decade. Gove is on the list.
Brexit wasn't fully delivered. NI were sold out. Your record on migration was a disgrace.
How do you fully deliver Brexit ?
NI was saved from sectarian violence chaos that a hard border would have delivered! And being effectively in the Customs Union has made their economy one of the bright sparks left in the UK! It demonstrates how Brexit has failed for the rest of us! As it always was going to!
Brexit was delivered. Saying it wasn't fully delivered is like saying we didn't give Liz Truss a chance with her disaster budget.
@phill6859 . No . The Tories were never believers. They did hsve covid and Ukraine which caused issue's. However your apology is poor.
@bryangeake5826 . There wasn't a need for a hard boarder. It could have all been done online. The will wasn't there. It suited those wanting a united Ireland
to have a hard boarder. They new it wouldn't happen and guessed the tories would let the eu control NI.
Corruption.
Considering Britain's immigration policies WHILE they were office, I struggle to imagine how they could possibly do a worse job now than the previous government has already.
And none of it was anything to do with him... 😒

The Tories face a gigantic dilemma - do they turn to the right to pull back voters lost to Reform UK or do they track to the centre to pull back seats lost to the Lib Dems and to Labour? It could be that the Conservative Party will split.
