Professor Sunetra Gupta: 'Lockdowns are a luxury of the affluent…the UK cannot afford it'

- Professor of theoretical epidemiology Sunetra Gupta has criticised the planned return to a Covid tier system in December.
Speaking with talkRADIO's Julia Hartley-Brewer, the Great Barrington Declaration co-author said it “still leaves the doors open to the enormous harms of lockdown”.
She added: “Lockdowns are a luxury of the affluent…the UK cannot afford it.”
It comes ahead of Boris Johnson setting out plans for a strengthened three-tier system of restrictions to replace England national lockdown and to pave the way for a limited relaxation at Christmas.

@Mr Porter Try not watching any TV/internet etc for a few days. It all goes away. I tried this a few weeks ago, went all weekend without watching anything and I had forgot all about it. If this was so bad I definitely would have remembered. If there was no TV/masks/lockdowns etc, it would go away. I have not known one person affected by this virus, not one. Without it mentioned I wouldn't have known anything about it as nobody I know has been ill with it or died. BTW I live on an old people estate too, not one person had it to any of our knowledge. Local Tesco where I go every week has had same old people working, they been fine. Also crematorium I am close to has no more dead than usual. Nothing makes any sense with this virus.

That is indeed true. But don't imagine those in the second cluster are insensitive to the overall situation, professor Gupta being a case in point.
Why do you naturally assume lockdowns, even the very weak one we have at present, are bad.
I know more working people whose lives have been changed for the better and they are neither affluent or reliant upon it for their income. In life there are always winners and losers.

The 1% in the US have added more than $200 billion to their net worth since March, while unemployment and bankruptcy has destroyed the middle and working class. Just look at how well the stock market in NYC has done since March. No doubt it's the same in the UK and the EU. In Soviet Russia the 1% got richer too.
The Fed (like the BoE) has also been printing money in vast amounts, which further benefits the rich, whilst the resulting inflation will destroy savings of normal people.
Compare the intellegence and dignity shown by this lady to the arrogance of Matt Hancock. It makes me angry.
May as well dig up Tony Hancock at least he'd make us laugh.

I’m in the vulnerable category and the way I protect myself is by taking magnesium, vitamin C, D and zinc, eating clean, getting enough sleep, praying, and not injecting myself with synthetic chemicals.

The schools are not open.
A friend has had to take their 5 YO child out of school because he is being forced to wash his hands constantly and being told not to touch anything, and he is starting to have nightmares because he is being made to live in fear BY THE SCHOOL.
It's wicked what is being done to children. They are usually very resilient so I hope they all bounce back and won't be turned into neurotic scaredy-cats.
I am disgusted to hear that the child was told off I as an adult get told off re walking the wrong way in a supermarket or placing one foot over a wretched line(I have a mobility issue and have a walking stick so sometimes I stumble. It greatly worries me how children may end up terrified over all this!

I read that article in the Guardian and I was shocked by how venomous it was. The writer sounded unhinged! I, for one, am very grateful to Sunetra Gupta for sharing her expertise in such a measured and rational way. She seems to be a very caring person and does not deserve the abuse in that article.

They now know we had the virus in February and Asda Staff many who are part time near retirement worked right through lockdown with very little protection .

If only UK had done what it did to Care Home Elderly we could simply say it was a tragic mistake but they did the exact same thing right across Europe and USA .

What part are you not getting. We do not want your vaccine.
These are completely new vaccines without the same rigorous long term testing normally required before mass consumption. They will not break the chain of infection (Flu is an epidemic ever year except this one and probably won't come back). Sure, If there are those who wish to be vaccinated then go for it. But if they try and enforce vaccination there will be serious trouble.

Attaching the political agenda of the WEF to a public health issue has made many justifiably anxious about the motives of the government that rules by decree. Coupled with the lack of meaningful political opposition, in spite of the arguments put forward by those of TGBD, is deeply troubling. If there was a general election today the Conservatives would be wipe out.

I just can't understand why certain scientists who are pro lockdown and pro vaccines are the ones being listened to by the government. Professor gupta is against the lockdowns and I agree totally. Hi Anyssa's World, I am very sorry to have to tell you that what is now happening is entirely 'normal' in the sense that it is the direct result of the combined impositions of all the interested parties operating jointly and severally to no specific or coherent plan or agenda, each parts sometimes pretending to be working with others but really only ever pursuing their own goals, and that mostly for personal glory or wealth, they are sometimes interchangeable!, most of their influence is disruptive, most of their 'controls' make things worse, it has been like this in public life for centuries and will continue to the bitter end!.
