Hey John, I want to thank you for the cell-phone camera trick to test optos. I've been having issues with my Bally Truck Stop for over a year and couldn't pinpoint it, until now. Thanks again!
I really like the fan mail and hang outs at the table. Also really like the Johns quest for 300,000. Everything you do is very entertaining. Keep up the great work.
slayer768 Thank you, sir! :)
This is My first time watching .I really enjoyed it .Great job .
Right on John another great video. Can't believe your opto problem was so simple and complex at the same time. Have a good one.
On the "Quest for" videos: Please continue! They don't detract anything from your weekly tech videos or "on the road" videos. They're bonus videos that I really enjoy! Subscribers that don't particularly enjoy them can just wait for your usual weekly releases.
On space in the basement: If you were to expand the arcade area, you could relocate some of the holiday storage into the garage. Your selection of games, in your own words, is extremely good. As you find more games you want to collect, you need to create more room to house them.
Keep up the great work man! I have my phone alert me when you upload a new video, and I'm never disappointed at what you share.
*edit* Also! Congrats on figuring out the RFM problem!
Keep doing what you are doing, the point quest vids give me hints on how to better my game play, the on the road vids are always great, and the refurbish, repair vids give me knowledge that I would not have otherwise. Keep up the great work!
i like that you have such a passion for what you do john, its what propelled you to learn how to fix all this stuff. just bought my first ever arcade game last month (1978 Atari football), no doubt because of watching all your vids. thanks so much and im looking forward to you restoring that sprint 2 for all us old schoolers
John this video is very informative about the opto problems you can experience on revenge from mars pin. thank you for making this video if and when i get this pin the info will def come in handy. I enjoy all your tech videos John. they're all amazingly informative for the hobby thanks again. Keep up the amazing videos John!!
Hey John, Here's a quick tip that has made my life easier. You can test IC's with your digital multimeter. Simply set the DMM to the diode test setting, place the red meter lead on the ground pin of the IC under test, and probe the other pins with the black meter lead. What you are essentially doing is looking for dead shorts to ground, because when IC's fail they usually short dead to ground. You should normally read a junction drop between the pins of around .4 to .8 volts. If you find a pin that appears to be shorted to ground, you have to then reference the manual to see weather or not the pin is supposed to be shorted to ground, as many times they are purposely pulled to ground.
I've been watching your videos for a couple of years now, and it's pretty amazing just how much you've improved them. Seems like you've really embraced it and your videos are balanced and have structure, which makes them a joy to watch. One minute you'll see pinball repair, the next arcade touring, then out of the blue you'll see something like the Pole Position Clone board. I personally think this channel is the most enjoyable channel on youtube. Well done man, keep it up!
Wow, dude! Thanks so much. I truly appreciate the kind words! THANK YOU!
Agreed! There's not enough arcade guru's out there with John's variety & dedication.
i know Im asking the wrong place but does any of you know of a trick to get back into an instagram account?
I stupidly forgot my password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me.
@Brett Aryan Instablaster =)
@Roger Ronan I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and im in the hacking process now.
Seems to take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
In the future while working on the opto board replace the old LM339 chips they are prone to be the weak point. Install sockets so that in the future you can replace the chips without soldering. Don't forget to clean off the solder flux as it can cause false bridges and is also corrosive. You fixed the initial problem with the installation of the new transmitters that failed to light. Most opto problems are bad transmitters as they are always on from power up and like bulbs they burn out. You created another issue when installing the new receivers but you were not aware of the reverse nature of the new optos. Congrats on the fix.
Definitely in the column of liking the gameplay videos - they're great for the rest of us who suck at the game. Still struggling to consistently get 100k on DK
So true, since John has been making these quest video, my score on DK has gone from 15k to 90k, I have to play DK at least once a day to get practice from now on & it's working, next stop 300k... I'm coming to get you John, lol JK ;)
Bimmy Lee Awesome! Glad the vids helped. DK is so much fun. I need to play again soon!
All these videos where you go and look at them, or buy them, or fix em up. Its all an ends to a means, and thast to play them. Love all your videos but the playthrough/quest videos are the real money shot for me. The reward after the work. Or after drooling at machines after an "on the road" Chalk me up for a fan of these as well
108400 now! only 1/10th away from some sort of record...
That is a cool pinball game, love the little cartoon on the screen.
Great, another lengthy Tech video !
Thanks man !
PS i love the new intro with you introducing the vid before the music starts, looks much more PRO ;-)
Good job fixing the optos John!!
Glad you fixed it man. The only Pinball 2000 machine I played was Stars Wars Episode 1. Unfortunately I never got to play Revenge From Mars but I did get to play Attack From Mars which is also a great game.
Since I found this channel, it's easily risen to the top of my favorites that I subscribe to. It's not only for repair videos, I watch them all...sometimes multiple times! I actually just started to collect arcade machines myself (breaking the neck on my CRT accidentally, as you read on your forums!) all because of this channel!
In regards to the Johnny Quest videos, keep them coming, I say! They're fantastic! (Though, where's Hadji been all these years?)
Thanks, Patrick! Means much! :)
Thanks John! Great vids as always! Big fan!
I am a long time VGO listener who just purchased their first pin (Episode 1) and am looking to get a feel for how to work on these. I don't have keys so need to drill the locks and reseat the prism card. It's randomly restarting and not booting back up. Thanks for the video man!
MrDrunkReviews Sounds not to bad. Good luck!
Ben Heck is a legend.Get him to make you one of his RE-Flow ovens.
Idea for Ben Heck: fix that damned moving table !
Glad you fixed those Opto !!! got a bit worried after you replaced the censors and it went back to the same old issue...
Love the idea of you organizing the Fun Spot Tournament ;-)
Love the videos John and Keep the game play videos coming.
Great video! I know you aren't really a Pats fan even though you have a table down there. I officially honorarily nominate you as a 12th man! GO HAWKS!
Ben could make John a thingy to keep the table from wobbling LOL
Honestly you should have him build you a board rack so you can test arcade boards before placing them in your machines
Stick to your guns John! Keep doing the bonus quest vids! I don't get people who complain about a bonus.
Awesome you got it going! Love that game.
Awesome, really enjoyed this one.
I would suggest that Ben Heck create some kind of test bed for your, something you could use to tend arcade boards at a glance; It could have its own test menu, and sensors you could place on the board you're testing to check continuity, resistors, capacitors. The Test Bed would allow you to troubleshoot any new/used board without putting it in a full cabinet.
Man, I love pinball more than anything but I will never own one because of all the maintenance/fixing you have to do on them. Must be such a headache. Anyway, awesome video!
Hi buddy, Ben could create an electronic scoreboard for saving your high scores. It could be like a live database that keeps you updated with latest score and once you input your score show how close you are to beating it etc. great vid as always B
This isn't a bad idea!
Yea that sounds good, Maybe wire it into Johns LCD TV and have a high score ranking across all his games. Getting the games to communicate with a central system would be the hard bit. No doubt Ben would find a way. Unless you just enter the scores, game name and player name in manually.
craig gilchrist Hey guys. My buddy Yotsuya over at BYOAC has already created one. You can use Google Docs to Update it on the fly with a cell or similar. Check it out here: forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,140635.msg1456258.html#msg1456258
I think it would be a great idea, hanging above you little work area etc. That would defiantly give me an incentive to beat em
It would be cool if it had a built in keyboard. All in one.
Awesome been waiting for this!
Hey John, For me.. The game play videos are "ok" but the reason I watch them is different than most I think. I watch to learn technique & tips. I would prefer you spent the time playing and describing play tips. I learned so much about DK , but the high score was not the driving reason to watch the video. I think a lot of games have a lot tricks , secrets, and technique that are not common knowledge so that's something to consider for your videos.
Seeing a video we you AND ben heck would be awesome
Maybe some kind of motorized Swiss Army knife, but instead with a bunch of tools that you use on it. That's all I can think of
Ben Heck making a game tweet highscores would be awesome!
I'm sure you noticed this already but your video camera showed the infra-red just fine, don't need the phone :)
googleboughtmee Yeah, I know. I did not see that while I was filming. ODD.
Great Video. Glad you fixed it! Reversed Silk Screen or something? Ben Heck is my top channel next to yours to Watch. Hope you not getting pounded by the snow storms.
Great video John! Glad you got it solved. By the way, did you drop your cell phone? It looked cracked later in the video.
If I ever see you in person I'm going to buy you a beer.
Thanks, bro! Cheers. :)
Did you change your camera? The frame-rate is awesome and the picture looks great!
Dude......I'm in Detroit. If u organize that tournament..........IM THERE!
Another great video.Ben heck is a legend how about a recording rig to help capture game videos something not bulky with a lighting rig and viewing screen for you.something that has place to clip on your camera that is measured distance that will give you exact same shot everytime
For different video types you want
Maybe even something to have multiple camera angles so you could get those papa pinball style videos ?
Keep fixing
Steve in the UK
Oh yeah, and I'm down for Funspot this year if you set something up.
Ben and yourself are my most watched UA-cam Channels. Can't wait to see you guys hook up and make something pretty B.A.
Looks like your phone needs a new screen now John!!
Congratulations! I was just about to ask you if those optos were backwards. LOL. I love my RFM.
Brian Hanifin Yeah, can you believe it!?? WTF!
Congrats! You need to celebrate with some Tito's!! You KNEAD some Tito's!! :)
By the way, I enjoy the game play videos. If you are a viewer that does not like it... then don't watch it!
A working arcade game/combo guitar amplifier with a full range of effects
I've Ben hearing a lot about this guy Ben, all around town here in RC. Sounds like one Heck of a smart guy. Anyway ,just my two cents,, love the idea of a digital high score board of the games in your basement. This way your viewers can see what, and who has the great scores in your basement! Also give them something to shoot for on there own respected arcades they may have... interested in what you two come up with nonetheless... Should be awesome. your, keepping it real,,Great work ,JON
Hi john I was watching an episode of the Ben heck show when he mentioned that his pinball machine would have a phone diagnostic software so that you can test the machine without taking the glass off ( so if you have a machine on location you can quickly and easily test it) so I through that maybe Ben can create a universal or single board to connect to your pinball machine or just revenge from mars (since when testing the game you can't see the screen so instead of listening to the beeps you just look at your phone) also if the board is universal what about support for your arcade machines so that you can look to see the high scores or enter self diagnostics without the need of opening the coin door. Just my idea.
That's awesome! I remember you wanting to do something with Ben a few videos back. Excellent!
maybe you guys could make a video pinball that plays multiple pinball games, if that's your thing - Pinball X, Or maybe he could improve the overall look of the arcade, walls, ceilings, SOMETHING cool and original. Didn't you have some lighting issues with your Major Havoc, like you could get the lights to flash at the same time or something? Hmmm it will be intereting to see what you come up with.
Oke, nice vid, lucky you , kind of strange that they go the other way .
Had a lot of snow today ? maybe you could show some weather,..... as if you were a weather freak .
Thanks gr from Switzerland
Have Ben Heck fix your Patriots table! :)
I think i suggested before that you should convert your wild gunman or whatever that nintendo cab you have in the garage is to a nintendo sheriff ...i know it's not the same cab and i know you don't like conversions but you said you really wanted one
Ben heck could make the controls since it's not a common controller
if not well, i dunno,..anything ben does is going to be a little unconventional but i don't know if you could get him for any serious (big/time consuming) builds
when replacing the dark receiver optos, how do u know the orientation when installing them?
By the way, opto. sensors are not LEDs (light-emitting diodes); they're light *sensors*.
i tried the other williams 2000 pinball game star wars episode 1 for the first time tonight. i actually liked it better than i thought. i never really liked revenge from mars that much because it seems so cheap. no ball save or at least on the machine i played it on years ago which can make the game go way to fast.
You ever think about putting LEDs in your RFM? I did, but until there is an LED OCD board for it, I might just put old lamps back into so they will fade correctly.
+p firths I have considered this many times but never did anything about it. Maybe... Some day.
+John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech I just watched your tour of the Stern factory followed by the documentary about Pinball 2000. It must have been so cool to have Mr Gomez take you on the tour since he basically created RFM!!! please keep up the great videos! I'm about to attempt the vga upgrade in the next couple of weeks
p fritts Dude...George Gomez is a personal hero of mine! It was amazing to have him give us that tour. So honored!
Shark tank has a PRODUCT that is called TABLE JACKS. They are for wobbly tables. EBay them.
Just think of the news headlines if he -didn't- fix it:
"Crazed man smashes pinball machine to bits with a flipflop, blames it all on "Opto"
Is there a free play mode for this without opening the cabinet?
John, I'm sorry I'm a newbie, please what does that blue and yellow plastic spring loaded tool DO? Does it blow air or suck up air? To remove excess solder particles? Thanks.
It's a soldapullt sucks up the solder like a manual vacuum.
Hey John been waiting for your new Vid,Hey when is your new Donkey Kong (and DKJr) Score Breaking attemts episodes ? Don't forget to do em asap i particulary love those :)
I've said it before and I'll say it again. You need space for more games. So, my thinking is to challenge Ben into figuring out how to rig up a way to run multiple boards that can be changed at the push of a button. Jamma's OK...but has to swap boards. Why not figure out how to do that Neo-Geo trick with full sized boards? You've got it going with DK Jr/DK 3. Why not something else?
Otherwise, I can't think of much that Ben could do. Kind of like the digital score board. A grid of LED's or an LCD hooked up to a Raspberry Pi? Though, I once did something like that with a Timex Sinclair and a TV that I got for free.
Wouldn't think FunSpot would object. After all, a tournament only means they get a flood of business on their classics. Why would they object to money???
The "I watch him in bed" comment about Ben kinda creeped me out.
You don't watch TV in bed ever?! :)
No. It makes me stay up way to late.
Maybe Ben could make you a custom token. Dispensing change machine. Could show how to do. Then you can have that in the basement and set up for tokens. Could be a good way to track what games are played the most.
You should ask Ben to look at your table.
John how about building an arduino controlled basement automation auto power up system
Flip one switch and each game powers up one at a time in the order you want
A breeze for Ben
Or the Heck effect guitar pedal!'
Hey John,
I know that you and Ben Heck both have a Revenge From Mars pinball machine why not do a cool mod for it? Like a new plunger or something new on the playfield?
I would like to see a MAME machine with a marquee that is an LCD so for each game it will bring up its own marquee. I know some people have tried this before but I would like to see this done on the cheap as the monitors for this are very expensive. Though I know how you feel about Emulation.
Ben has an Attack from Mars
Wait, before I watch - isn't it a SPOILER to say that "we are going to fix..."? ? Where's the suspense? The tension? The drama? Is Rosebud really the name of a pinball game?
LOL! I should just release videos with no title and description. :)
Nor image. Kinda like that release by Public Image, Ltd.
didn't need to use cell phone. any camera even the one you are using can see ir. could see it easy without phone after turn light off. trying to show phone on camera was harder to see them then just showing them with your camera. could tell right away what one wasn't working before using phone. did you not look through viewfinder/lcd screen on camera at all to see?
The viewfinder on the video camera did not show that! I swear! I only saw that AFTER I did the video. Also, the way I did it with the cell phone is exactly how you should do it if you weren't filming a youtube video like i was. :)
oh ok. weird. wonder why the camera screen didn't show it.
the flat side is Negative - - - - not + + + + + flat for a flat line :)
Well, the replacements were the opposite to the originals.
ho them dam chines know nothing about standardization lol
A better boad for por pole position
Your poor phone...SMASH!
Ya know, you're just being redundant by putting the phone's video camera in the way between your optoelectronic emitters (which "opto" for short shouldn't be capitalized and confused as "One-Person-Train-Operation") and your camera that we see you with. It doesn't have to be a cell phone. There's nothing special about the cell phone camera. We can already see them lit up through your nicer camera here.
Don't for get the jump bug you need to work on your new game rember the jump bug
