  • So I have been looking for months on a good option for a overhead camera rig. I have looked at a ton of UA-cam videos to see what I can find that was affordable for someone like me on a tight budget. I found plenty of videos about C Stands, tripods with an extendable arm, mic boom stick stands, etc. The only problem is none of those were really cheap. So then I started to think outside the box. That is where this setup came to birth!
So this overhead setup can be done in just a matter of minutes. All you need to do is go to your local hardware store and buy a few things. The magic word is PVC pipes. I bought a grand total of six 2ft x 1" PVC pipes. To make it more affordable I actually bought a 10ft PVC pipe and had someone at Home Depot cut it for me. So I was able to get 5 out of those 10 footer and bought an extra 2ft pipe separately. Then you just need some 1" metal floor flanges, a couple of 1" adapters that have a threaded male in that can screw into the floor flange, two 90 degree elbows, a 1/4" 20 hex bolt, and a 1/4" drill bit to drill some holes in the piping. And abrakadabrah...It's done!
This DIY project is super simple and super affordable. The grand total cost me right at $20. It might be more or less for you depending on where you buy it. I went to Home Depot since it's just right down the street.
So this overhead camera rig setup is the perfect answer to the question that I have been searching for a few months.
    Time Stamps:
Skip to breakdown of materials needed: 1:08
Skip to final rig setup: 5:38
Skip to view of camera mounted: 6:23
Here is a list of all the products that you will need. It ultimately depends on the width that you are trying to achieve. The main setup is 2'x2'x2' and that works pretty good. I bought a connector that I'm able to use to make the width extend out to a little over 4 ft. This helps to achieve the look you might be wanting and not having the PVC pipe and floor flange in the video. Just saying this to keep in mind...

Oh wow you were the second result for me after Peter McKinnon's video that has 600k+ views but I was attracted to the 20 bucks price tag. I watched your video and checked your view count, I can't believe this video only has 500 views. I left a like and a comment, thanks for sharing your way of doing this!

That is awesome to hear! I really appreciate the kind words for sure! I still use this setup today. I’m thinking about using some black spray paint I have in the garage and paint it. It has held up really well. Hope you subscribed!

Funny how we forget the old DIY ways ....I made a whole shoulder rig out of PVC back it the day. lol. Thanks for the reminder

Nice Idea. For the center section of pipe, you could have used a custom length of 36-40", along with the added length that the 90's provide--given that your table can still accommodate this added width--Those flanges should be out of the shot with minimal to (possibly) no zooming in. Other than that tweak, I think this is a pretty cool Idea. Thanks for sharing.

Was just thinking this myself. Standard overhead rigs are 36" wide, and with the thickness of the pipe, it would be fine. No zooming, wider shot for overhead views.Going to try this out myself.

I actually loved this idea so much I made my own from your concept creation. But used 3/4 in PVC and also in 3ft sections instead of 2ft. As a Tarot Reader I needed space as well as camera stability. To add that the 3/4 in. PVC holds my heavy Sony A68 to profection.

Thank you for this tutorial! I’m about to return a $47 boom arm that wasn’t compatible with my tripod, and I was trying to figure out what I could do for a top down shot! I’m definitely headed to Home Depot!

Hey awesome video. I'm gonna make this rig right away.
I just switched from 1 video to your video and i noticed your voiceover is a bit low in terms of volume.
you can use a collar mic, it won't look bad instead it would encourage people to stop hiding mic and focus more on clear voice quality.

      @RoyFlorez  11 місяців тому +1

Yeah, that’s what I’m saying though, you paid a lot for each floor flange. Unless you got some “higher end” ones but the ones I got are like $7 each. Looking at them right now. Regardless, $44 for the setup still isn’t terrible

These flanges look identical to the ones in your video. I'm not sure what is different about them. They were the only ones in 1 inch. Maybe online is cheaper?
      Regardless, still a good buy.
I have a heavy nikon d850. So I'm going to screw the setup into a flat board.

    • @RoyFlorez

I have extra pieces to do that but I don't necessarily need it taller for my videos. I did make it wider so the floor flanges go all the way to the edges of the table. I'm using clamps to keep it nice and secure.

So, I want to build a removeable overhead rig for filming my sewing tutorials. I'm wondering is there some sort of clamp I can put on each end to clamp it on the table. My table is antique and want to screw anything onto it and if I just sit it there it'll get in the way. Any suggestions for me? I'm using my backdrop bar right now and so awkward. 😔
