i know Im randomly asking but does anyone know of a way to log back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly forgot my account password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me!
@Lionel Mohamed I really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff now. Seems to take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
You are one of the few guys who actually know how to draw a ferro rod. That added detail of bracing on your boot was a nice little detail. I'm you newest subscriber.
Thank you so much for tuning in Chris! I am glad you found the video to be useful. That is what it's all about right there! Thank you for your comment and take care.
This is the best I have seen on youtube. I have one thing to add. Try using the slow scrape technique onto a dry leaf (or paper for practice ). Make a fold in the leaf (paper) and do your scraping. You can now tap the leaf to concentrate the scraping into the fold, and tap them precisely onto your tinder. Ignite with a fast stroke.
Thank you.. you can imagine me talking survival to my family.. well I just used Ferro rod one of the ways you are showing it and at worked like a charm.
It's been days I've been searching for a video that could teach me how to use my Ferro Rod in a better way. My current problem was that I couldn't light anything up without my cotton.. I thought the problem was I couldn't make big enough sparks like in other people's videos, because my Ferro Rod was too small.. that's when I find your video where you use the exact same model, and propose new techniques to counter it's small length! You saved me, thx!
Excellent video Matt! Very well demonstrated, very well presented, I can see that you make a great teacher when running bushcraft classes. Always learning something from your videos brother!
Thank you so much Torren! I really appreciate your kind words brother. That means so much my friend. Thanks for taking the time to tune in and I am glad you got something from it.
loved the video and it was perfectly explained...lit my first fire tonight using a ferro rod but was just hit with the irony of using youtube to learn primitive techs.
LOL! It is a crazy world we live in Chris :) We use our high powered devices to look up primitive skills :) Congratulations on that first fire!! I appreciate your kind words and I hope that you will enjoy other videos as you continue learning new skills. Take care my friend!
Wow. I've watch countless videos on ferro rod technics but yours has definitely tought me some new awsome skills. Thanks so much for sharing the knowledge!!!
Thanks for the honesty!! I often thought that a ferro rod would do as a magnesium, if it was done properly. Grinding the ferro rod into shavings, makes it so you don't have to carry one more thing into the bush. But now...MAYBE I'll get the 6" ferro...MAYBE..
Thumbs up from me, too: The best video, I've seen so far, and there have been a lot! Stabilizing the scraper with the tip of your boot - thumb up! "Shooting" sparks with only the tip of the rod - thumb up! And so on... Thank you!
Seems simple enough, but I see people on these "survival shows" struggle with ferrocerium rods and magnesium bars, so it's nice to see these techniques and how to use these tools more fully explained. Also good to know that the bigger size is worth buying.
Great video, really well done and informative. In the past when finding really good tender was a problem, I have used chap stick from my kit for an accelerant. I just rub on the stick as I'm feathering. I would recommend using RED or Orange Gorilla tape and paracord unless your trying to hide. Much easier to find items you drop or just lay on the ground. Reflective orange is really great at night if you have a flash light. I'm going to practice throwing a spark a foot today, like you just did. Thanks
Dang Dude. I have seen you do videos on things that so many others have covered, and yet you put an original spin on the subject and give so much more information. You are truly and outdoor and bushcraft educator.
Thank you so much for your interest and for the sub Mark! I appreciate it my friend! I will have a part 2 coming out before too long on some more ferro rod techniques to take it a little further. Take care sir!
Matt, can you use the inside of the bottle opener on your SAK as a ferro rod striker? Not the can opener which doesn't have enough space but the bottle opener. It has a nice curve to it which should contact a larger area of the rod. I don't have a ferro rod. Can you experiment and let us know?
I appreciate that my friend. It doesn't always happen in one strike :) Sometimes it can be a little more challenging depending on the tinder material. Thank you for your kind words and for tuning in!
That is an awesome video. Thanks for sharing your skills Mat. The way you break this down reinforced the need for well prepped combustibles. I appreciate your personal guidance this past weekend at Frozen Foot 2019. I'm doing it brother... Thanks. RLTW
Best option is to incorporate a spring-loaded ferro rod and striker unit, like a cigarette lighter, installed into the butt end of your knife handle. This is an always dry, always safe, (never drop and lose!) unit. And in a one-handed firestarting emergency you can hold a bird's nest and strike knife butt in one hand, run the striker along your pant leg, or boot sole (or side of sole) or a wood surface and shoot out a massive ton of sparks for getting a flame and fire.
I can't say I have ever seen a unit like that. Very interesting! I would love to see one in action for sure. Thank you for watching and commenting John!
Flint is really just a hard rock that is used to strike a spark off of high carbon steel. The flint itself isn't what is actually sparking. Ferrocerium is a ferrous metal compound which combusts when it is removed and exposed to the air. It is easy to get confused with the difference between flint and steel and a ferro rod and striker.
Another great video thanks for going in so much detail. And those were three good ways to use the fear rod. I enjoy your videos looks almost as much as it looks like you enjoy making them keep them coming I'll keep watching and passing them on thank you.
Thank you so much Phillip! I truly do enjoy sharing these videos and the process of making them as it challenges me to train, study, review and practice my subject matter. I really appreciate your interest and kind words my friend!
Hi Chris, I am currently using two that I have found to be exceptional, The HD6 from Self Reliance Outfitters and the Exotac Fire Rod XL. Both of those are softer in composition and throw massive amounts of molten metal when you strike them. You can find links below if you are interested to learn more.
Good video! I put Black Hat Bushcraft's URL and the name of this video in a review I did of Coghlan's Flint Striker on Amazon. Thanks for the video! -- Old Matt

Totally awesome!! I just realised that I've never unleashed the full potential of my ferro rod. Thanks for sharing the knowledge...

Thank you for these techniques I can struggle with the ferro rod and teaching my son as well!
Nice techniques and adaptions that make more options to fire starting. Thanks.

The pull technique is best.
Will the dust that comes off the corroding ferro rod infighting if you collect it & strike sparks on it?

I have the bayite rod , large one , is that a good rod
The Bayite is one of the best ones I have found, especially for the price.
Great video! New subscriber..
Thank you so much for the sub and your kind words!
The flick method will only work with a softer composite. Correct me if I am wrong.
Same with shaving the material off of the rod itself
You are not wrong. The softer rods will definitely perform better in this way. It isn't impossible with the firmer, just much more difficult.
Is a flint rod as good?
Flint is really just a hard rock that is used to strike a spark off of high carbon steel. The flint itself isn't what is actually sparking. Ferrocerium is a ferrous metal compound which combusts when it is removed and exposed to the air. It is easy to get confused with the difference between flint and steel and a ferro rod and striker.
