*As much as I enjoy practicing more primitive methods of fire making, A Bic lighter has always had a place in my kit. I don't use it always, but it is nice to have instant flame when you need it. These are a few tips or simple mods to make your lighter just a bit better and I will demonstrate use of a lighter in a couple of ways. I will also demonstrate how to salvage a soaked lighter very easily. Many people like using the "roll on the pants" method to achieve this but I prefer the shown method as it doesn't expend the mini ferro rod in the lighter that actually makes the sparks. The rolling method works fine in the short term but I always prefer to think in terms of conserving my resources. I also feel that this method is just as fast if not faster for me personally. Thank you for your time and interest!

Black Hat Bushcraft The fastest way to get the lighter to work after it gets wet is to just keep trying to light it. The flint will dry real quick from the friction.

When trying to light the wet lighter it really helps if you roll the wheel backwards a few times, it will rough up the flint and give you a bigger spark... try it

I used Bic lighters for years until I discovered Zippo butane inserts. It's like a mini torch, with a directional, hot blue flame. Far superior for getting a fire started. I've submerged these in water for hours, removed them, given them a shake, blown a couple puffs of air in and they light right up. They are also refillable and they don't leak. Wind-resistant. No more burnt fingers trying to get the flame where I want it. Other companies make these inserts as well. Those I've tried all worked the same. I wrap mine with with bright yellow duct tape for visibility and a fire starter source. I still carry a small BIC as backup, but haven't used it since I switched to the inserts.

A #11 o-ring from Lowe’s works well in place of the Canadian Jam Knot. I put it on my lighters. Just slide it down out of the way to light and I don’t run the risk of losing it when using my lighter. I imagine you could probably burn the o-ring also if needed.

    Very helpful!
My guess is to wrap the lighter up in cellophane plastic or a sturdy plastic bag to minimize the chance of it getting damp.
Also look around for a very small plastic container that will fit at least one lighter air tight.
If the lighter stops producing a flame, but continues to produce a spark, then try alcohol.
Ethanol and isopropyl alcohol should ignite with a spark.
    Try carrying extra lighters.
Thank you for sharing helpful videos!

Great ideas and suggestions! I thought of yet another way to dry out the lighter would be to tie a length of chord to the loop on the lighter and whirl it about. A 4-foot length whirling at two revolutions per second would give a wind velocity of about 35 miles per hour, in addition, the centrifugal force would tend to throw the water droplets away from the lighter. Cool ideas!

After watching this video I added the gorilla tape, bank line loop and extended the bank line long enough to make the Canadian jam knot also (all one peace of line). Now it is impossible to lose the jam knot. If you attach the wet Bic lighter to a 2 foot or so piece of bank line and spin it really fast, it dries out very quickly.

    Another couple tips is.
1: when your lighter runs out of fuel keep it. I believe certain fire tender (like char cloth and petroleum jelly cotton balls for example) can still be lit by the spark from a empty lighter.
2: if you're careful you remove the flint from your empty bic for a Zippo lighter.

Other tricks - take a small screwdriver and pry up the "childproof" strip, and use a pair of needlenose pliers to pull it off. Now, your lighter will be much more user friendly to cold fingers. Also, in between the tape strip at the bottom for the "hanger" and the shroud at the top on my other comment, wrap the mid-body with waxed jute or bank line, for more tinder. Also, to dry it off, wipe it off, then blow into the hole, wipe, blow, and that should do it . . . unless the last person to blow in it has ebola, you should be fine.

Thank you for your helpful advise. I would also caution people who are not familiar with using butane lighters at high elevations, or cold temperatures. Most lighters quit at about 11,000 Ft., depending on the barometric pressure. A fellow hiker got lost on a high mountain in a freezing rain. He had six Bic lighters and one high altitude lighter. He had to use the latter lighter to get the Bic's to work.

  • @ryanhanchett3708

    Hehe.
But in terms of "my worst fear", I can think of several that are a heck of a lot worse .
You've got some great ideas there! I got one of the Xotac sleeves to stop the lighter from accidentally draining and to get an attachment point. But your methods are a lot cheaper. Thr Xotac is relatively watertight however, so the lighter will still work if it gets soaked.

The cord under the gas button/lever is a good idea. I've always used a piece of shock cord that I've tied around the lighter with a knot on each end.. I tighten it up enough so it doesn't come loose and when i want to use the lighter, I grab the knots and pull and it stretches enough to slide it down the body of the lighter. Plus it just stays attached to my lighter so I don't end up losing my Canadian whatever that knot was string. :)

I often use a keyring, cut in 2 ,and clip the both ends of the open ring in the 2 dints of the metal top. (sometimes you'll have to bent open the ring a bit,or close to get a tight fit). It works best with a Clipper, but any disposeble lighter works as well

Great informative video. I also carry Bic lighters in my kit for the same reason. They are my first go to. I find them to be very reliable, and as you demonstrated here can quickly be dried if they get wet. You can also roll the flint wheel on your pants causing the flint to generate heat. This can accelerate the drying process even more.
One thing I do is store my Bic lighters in a prescription drug container. I find that I can get 3 Bic lighters to fit in one of these, and the fuel cannot run out as there is no way the valve button can be depressed. You can wrap duct tape around the container and accomplish the same thing with bank line to create a loop for hanging it, and yes it also floats. I've found that I can easily slide one of these containers into my pocket, and have as many as 3 Bic lighters plus a few other items such as safety pins, or waterproof matches stored inside.
    Just my two cents.

I like the technique of blocking potential fuel leaks with bankline under the fuel latch. To actually test the bankline under the gas latch, submerge it in water, and THEN press the latch. If there are no bubbles, there is no gas leak.
But failure to achieve ignition of a potentially weak stream of fuel is NOT a good test. I will loop the line around TWICE to increase my confidence level.

I take a piece of thin plastic (milk jug or water bottle) cut a strip a little more than 1" wide - put the gorilla tape on one end, wrap the strip around the lighter and overlap and take a few more turns (I generally wrap around two feet or so of tape). Then, this "shroud", if done right, will slide up and down the lighter -- to cover the top end, button and all. Slide it up - no accidental discharge. Slide it down - light as desired.

@@Sackmatters the "flint" in a box lighter is enormous, it will far outlast the fuel in the lighter. Rolling it on your pants to dry it out will not use up the "flint" before the gas outlives it. Besides, we are talking about getting fire now, we may be cold and wet, life is on the line, do we care if we take a little life of the "flint". Not to mention these types of lighter are cheap. Abuse it once, if after that you are not comfortable carrying it, just take a new one next time.

If all you have is a wet lighter, your right, you better know how to get it to work fast. However, you could really use one of our Fatwood Firesteels. Great video.

For the cord, you can use reflective paracord, to make it easier to find, with a flashlight in the dark, makes good tinder too. Can be used also for trail marking. You can use a ranger band [piece of bike innertube] to stop the gas from leaking the way you did with the bank line, burns good too. When your drying the lighter, spin the strike wheel backwards a few times, it will create ferro dust to ignite a flame. No pink lighters, thanks.

Maybe, you could, add to the tip of water logged lighter? After maybe first 20-30 seconds of the shaking and blowing {which where great; added to my Arsenal}rubbing the wheel up and down (if available) dry material such as; pants, shirt, towel, ect., and {[in worse case scenario´s] i suppose} your skin may speed up the process? Idk ive always just used my pants or coat not much of the rest it was sufficient. Reiterating that I adding tips to Arsenal. May God be with you

If you take a Bic lighter that is wet it is easiest to roll the Flint wheel on your jeans about 10-12 times collecting Flint shavings inside of the wheel because it's wet when you strike will create a ton of spark and will relight the lighter

Thank you for the Jam knot suggestion I had seen people suggest putting a zip tie on it but I was like zip ties are not reusable

I agree 100% Denise! I want to be able to take it on and off as needed without cutting a zip tie. Thank you for your time and interest!

Great tips Matt. Funny enough I've never heard of those tips before. I also like to take off the child's safety features on the lighter to make it easier to ignite. Thanks for the video. - Josh

Thank you so much for taking the time to tune in Josh. Disposing of the child safety lock is always the first mod on my lighters as well. I appreciate you watching and commenting.

A rubber O ring of the appropriate size also works well to prevent accidental leakage.

Matt as usual one real find video!! I just happen to run across that one about the Bic lighter. Those are good ideas especially typing the little cord on it, and I've been using it. gave me out of your putting to keep it from bleeding out. Keep the videos coming and I will keep watching and tell other about them. Gingdah 🚶💀
