This vignette while welcome is also prosaic and understated. It’s actually an incredibly rare achievement, the intuition that resulted in the music of the Sopranos. It is on the same extraordinary level with its script and story of our human condition and human relationships.
The one that truly floored me was “Living On A Thin Line” by The Kinks. I just had never heard it. It’s so powerfully unsettling and as it was as a backdrop to the episode where Ralph kills his girlfriend forms a drama akin to Mozart’s Commendatore scene from Don Giovanni. There are so many other examples. The music of the end credits almost invariably was perfectly chosen. And before I stop, the heroic finishing of the series with Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” (to me, the greatest musical portrait of American idealism, hope, and love) was a wonderful decision.
I’m surprised more analysis of the series is not readily available but perhaps with time people will realise the depth of insight that it gave us of ourselves, despite the darkness of its setting and subject.
