- The Big Shmear..
Easiest formula for lacing and cells.on a large canvas..
In this video I demonstrate how I use Amsterdam's oxide black mixed with floetrol and shmear it across other paints to create great lacing and cells.
Simple 2 ingredients..
Amsterdam Black Oxide paint
mixed 1 part paint to 4 parts Floetrol..
Get a dollar store cake server.. or large pallet knife..and do big shmears..
It also works with Amsterdam Titanium White..
and if you mix the 2 to make gray..
I show this application on three different paintings in this video.

Gail, I love the blues in the second painting! The first painting feels so bold and reminds me of a walk on Mars while looking into space just beyond the horizon. And the third painting is vibrantly beautiful! All 3 are beautiful! Big hugs ~Cheryl

Thank you so much for sharing these, they are absolutely gorgeous! I'm so glad you are using American floetrol, Aussie is way too cost prohibitive for me. Thanks again!
So beautiful!
I love stripes and you've got them in a variety of delicious shimmering color combinations. The large Oxo Spatula works very well for making cells pop too...

Beautiful work! Now I finally have a use for my cake icing spreader!!!gave up baking long time ago.....
Perfect..
Gorgeous, Gail! There are several paintings within the painting. 💜
Always so beautiful. You make it look so easy and ever so "graceful" if that's even a thing in painting. :-)
Wow they are all so beautiful. Could you share the colors you used in the last one (the one that was in your head)? So pretty!
Absolutely stunning! Have you posted a link to this on Art Addicts(?) I think our members would love this! Beautiful work. 🌹
These paintings are stunning 😍 Gail is the floetrol in all the paints??👏🏻🌈💚
Those blues are absolutely stunning! Which ones are they please?
Wonderful, thanks so much for sharing. Did you mix the colours with Floetrol as well as the black?
Yes, all the other colours are mixed with floetrol and a little bit of water It depends on the consistency of the paint but it's three or four parts floetrol to one part paint and a little squirt of water
Lovely and a wonderful way to use less paint.
Gorgeous Gail! Do you offer classes? I’m curious how you calculate the amount of paint you use for each piece. Thank you for sharing your inspiration with us.
Thank you Gail love these only Wished U.K. had Floetrol
Do you have just any brand acrylic binder? Isn't FLOETRAL just Acrylic latex paint with no pigment?
Any paint conditioner. Doesn't have to be floetral.
There must be a paint conditioner.. like Owatrol.. etc..
Another fabulous piece, and the music is 🔥 what was the first song? (If you don’t remember that’s okay)
Hello, this new way of painting with these pouring colors is great! You put a wonderful idea in my head. I work with Floetrol from Germany and have the feeling that its basic consistency is thicker than the American Floetrol. Because ... despite following the recipe instructions, my mixed color is always too thick in the end. And if you add too much water, the result will never be satisfactory. Unfortunately. Do you have a tip? I keep trying anyway.
I think it’s absolutely beautiful and I love the cells and always I love your colours I’m in Australia so I’m thinking because I use Australian floetrol that I’m going to get I hope a similar effect? My granddaughter and I are watching together she’s only six months old but she loves your work to ❤️
Awww.. so sweet.. yes you have the Aussie floetrol and should get wonderful results with the Amsterdam paint as well
Gorgeous Gail....very pretty piece.
Your black swipe is 4 parts floetrol and 1 part black oxide amsterdam. What is the ratio for copper, silver, gold paints? Whats the consistency of these colors please?
It is 3 to 4 parts Floetrol to one part paint...and a bit if water is necessary..
Paint is a small mound that hesitates.. before disappearing
Gail. These are wonderful! Do you think other Amsterdam colors, other than black and white as the swiping color, would produce the same results?
Thanks for all your videos.
I have not tried the other ones yet.. it might..
Is it only the Amsterdam paint that works for this technique?
Wow ...they are all absolutely beautiful... I have one question when you say four parts floetrol approximately what is that in grams or ounces?
It can be any measurement if its 1 oz of paint is 4 oz of floetrol
Gail you state in your video the floetrol you used was US floetrol is it different from Canadian or does both come from same place I guess my question is it different?
What are the mixing ratios for your other paints, gold, copper etc. used in this technique?
It's gorgeous, do you have to use Amsterdam paint?
So far that's the only paint that I have family to do this. Who knows maybe there are other paints that behave this way
@@GailBurstynLifeInSplatters thanks 😊
The 20X24, is that neon blue?
No.. It was Aretha Pearl turquoise..
Do you use 4 to 1 in all the colors?
Depending on the paint.. 3 or 4 to 1
Will any black acrylic paint work or does it have to be Amsterdam?
Sue Spurling- I tried this last night with what I had on hand which was a black metallic pearl from AColor and some generic sorts of silver, gold and copper that were poking around and it turned out amazing with lots of cells and patterning, so I would say Amsterdam if you have it, but go ahead and try whatever you have for a pleasant surprise. I am making a larger version for my living room today using the same black metallic pearl and some better Daler Rowney metallics and an AColor copper pearl metallic. Oh, I am in Spain so used Owetrol, the European floetrol.
dhijana scott-harmony thank you for your advice. I don’t have Amsterdam black so I’ll use whatever I have and see what happens.😊
Do you sell your paintings?
yes.. I do.. please email me
