It's generic because OnePlus is finally just becoming a regular phone company like Samsung and Apple. After the first few phones there's not much you can do other than bump up the specs. Their phones will eventually be just as expensive.
From all the reviews I've seen, this is the best one out there. Most of the reviews just crush the OnePlus 5, say it's a bad phone, with a bad camera and just point out all the bad things about it. As a OP3 user I'm disappointed, it seems like a lazy step up from the previous iteration. almost like the iPhone 7 was to the 6. Now I seriously must consider between a S8+ or this.
How can you compare the S8+ to this? They're completely different price points. In the UK this £450 and an S8+ is £780, comparing them is ridiculous. If you want to spend over £300 just to have an edge to edge display and water resistance go right ahead.

I'm not considering upgrading my OP3 to this at all. The gap between the cost of this and the other major flagships is slowly closing, which means that OP are loosing their USP. This year, customers are expected to pay more for a better camera .... and that's about it. What's essentially happened is that they couldn't build a significantly better phone than the 3T for the same price and so they spent some extra money on a camera to give people a reason to buy it. They've lost their place as the best value IMO.
Your right with that, but does it really matter? Most intentional clones will include an apple logo and theme their phones to look like iOS. To me, this phone is about the internal specs and the software. Also, you don't tend to look at the back of your phone all that often ;)
I think what most tech reviewers lacked in their reviews are audio test, specifically microphone quality. Try record some videos in a loud environment(concert, pub) or having someone to play the drums would be a good test on the microphones. I'm a musician and I find HTC's and Lumia's are superior in this area. Cheers! :)

if you're have the OP3 or 3T and in their Open Beta program, then you already have all of those software features. And if you want to install the latest OS then use OperaVPN , it's super easy

This is no way a flagship killer. Have been a oneplus fan... owned opo, op2 and op3t... but disappointed with op5. It is definitely not per the slogan of oneplus "never settle". They settled for a full hd screen rather than competing with 4k's out there. They settled by blatantly copying iphone7+ design. They settled for same bezel based display screen when flagships are going bezel less. they settled for no ipx ratings when other flagships are already water resistant to great extent. They did nothing else but grouping together last years innovations in one phone and calling it industry disruptive device shamelessly. It is a great job done by their marketing team in creating hype and every one is buying it.

Don't bring up the VR argument, VR on mobile is just dumb, your phone doesn't have a GTX 970 in it, nor does it have a gsync screen, if u want VR, build a PC. People who bash on 1080p display probably also believed in "4k 60fps on console" and bashed htc for removing the headphone jack without realizing htc u11 offers the best DAC on mobile devices through USB-C.
I bought the S8 two days ago instead. the lack of originality annoyed me. looks way too similar to the iPhone. oppo and one plus need to stop drinking the iPhone kool aid.
if u want gorgeous Design(not a copy), infinity display(qHD), wireless charging,water & dust resistance, better camera, and awesome Samsung accessories (like Samsung pay, Samsung dex, AKG earbuds) you just have to pay $150 extra and buy S8; otherwise op5 but surely op has lost its uniqueness

OnePlus3T had OIS and OnePlusX had SD card support in SIM2. So I feel like it could've been included.

I guess this is my next phone next year, next year because it will be cheaper and im good for now :)
