  • Grow A Venus Fly Trap Plant With Me? It’s one of the few plants in the world that is truly carnivorous🌱
    🐛
    The Venus Fly Trap is a plant well-known for its ability to trap and digest insects with its modified leaves.
    Once grown, it’s important to know that each trap can only be used a few times before it loses its ability to snap shut. So it’s important not to trigger the traps unnecessarily, as it can weaken the plant.
    Also known as Dionaea muscipula, is a native species to North and South Carolina, where it thrives in swampy areas.
    Venus Fly Trap seeds are tiny - no bigger than the size of a sesame seed - and we’re sprouting them in two ways. Paper towel germination method and in soil.
    To germinate Venus Fly Trap seeds, sprinkle the seeds on top of the paper towel, shpritz them religiously with water - keep that towel damp - and seal it in a glass jar. Or you can plant directly in soil and water it three times a week - but you need a lot of sun for the soil method.
    After 2-3 weeks, you should start to see tiny Venus Fly Trap seedlings emerge from the paper towel and the soil.
    Transplant as necessary.
    One other interesting fact is that the Venus Fly Trap can produce flowers that are small and white and usually appear in the spring. If your Venus Fly Trap does produce flowers, it's important to remove them, as they can divert energy away from the rest of the plant.
    So come back in a week or two to see the progress of our baby carnivorous venus fly traps!

    I have a lot of information on these, since I've tried those myself.
    1. Do NOT plant venus flytraps, or ANY carnivorous plants in soil, unless the soil is VERY much so deprived in nutrients(it also needs to be acidic, butterworts like it alkaline though), in which you may not know the nutrients in the soil. Use sphagnum moss(better yet, mixed with perlite), or a mixture of peat, perlite, and silicate sand. Sphagnum moss with perlite is the best 'soil' for sowing carnivorous plant seeds. Peat is very fluffy(until it gets wet), mushy, yet dense, that's why you need silicate as a filler and makes the peat moss fluffy because wet peat moss is too dense for soft carnivorous plant roots, you also need perlite because wet peatmoss is NOT porous, and the silicate sand weighs the roots down, meanwhile perlite will make the soil more lightweight and aerates the roots between wet peat.
    2. Buying 'venus flytrap' seeds, or any carnivorous plant seeds on the internet is frowned upon, as it most likely is a scam, unless you know the seller yourself or you have good reviews that show how the seeds have grown. There are alot of scams because you have a similar looking seed to the flytrap; dragonfruit.
    3. It is not recommend to sow carnivorous plant seeds on tissue/damp paper towel as it can lead to mold, and these guys are more prone to mold than most other seeds.
    4. Venus flytrap seeds need stratification(a process in which the seed is placed in a cold environment for 1-2 months, to simulate real life winter, this process is usually artificially remade with putting the seeds in damp paper towel, and ziplocking it, putting the bag in the refrigerator, NOT the freezer) as stratification sharply raises the chances of your seed growing.
    (EDIT)
    5. (I completely forgot about watering lol) For watering, make sure you're using low TDS(Total Dissolved Solids) water. The TDS must be below 50. Guaranteed water with the TDS meter lower than 50 is; Reverse Osmosis water, Distilled water, Rain water, Bog/Pond/Lake water(please check first, if the bog/pond/lake water has higher than 50 TDS, then don't use it).

    There are numerous carnivorous plants on this planet mostly in the pitcher plant family that grow in habitats ( mostly peat bogs) that do not allow them to take up nitrogen in their roots. They evolved to absorb nitrogen through the enzyme digestion of insects.

    • @kolerebooted5658
      @kolerebooted5658 Рік тому

      The reason they "spit it out" is because they need live prey. (The traps have hairs on the inside, and those hairs need to be stimulated after the trap shuts so the plant knows it caught something) If the qualifications aren't met, the trap simply reopens. I still wouldn't feed it plants though since they catch prey for fertilizer. (Not to survive, they survive from photosynthesis) Plants don't have the same nutrients that a bug would. Feeding it a plant could also cause the plant to kill that specific trap.

    • @marieke6687
      @marieke6687 Рік тому

      @@kolerebooted5658 oh I’m not feeding it plant based food, it just won’t eat bugs. It’s outside now for the summer and it still spit bugs out. It did have thrips (😩) so that might have something to do with it. The plant is with my parents while I’m away for 3 months so I’m not exactly sure how it’s doing but from the pictures I’ve been getting it looks like it’s still spitting live bugs out.

    Venus flytraps seeds and all other temperate carnivorous plant seeds require cold stratification to be able to germinate. You should also be growing them in a peatmoss and perlite mixture.

    • @bigbowlowrong4694
      @bigbowlowrong4694 8 місяців тому

      Venus Fly Traps do not require cold stratification. They naturally germinate the summer they are released.
      It’s moot anyway, the seeds in the video are definitely not from a VFT.

  • @satinizer8021
    @satinizer8021 Рік тому +1

    they're not really carnivorous though, they still photosynthesize just fine. they "eat" insects to get nitrates, because the soil they naturally grow in lacks nitrates, which is a very important substrate in building proteins. it's why everyone says to plant the venus fly trap in soil that lacks nutrients; it's just their natural habitat, it's where they evolved to grow.

  • @Mukduck619
    @Mukduck619 10 місяців тому

  • @Rabbit-the-One
    @Rabbit-the-One Рік тому +2

    You need to winterize them first. Dry that towel a bit more and out that in the fridge for 6 months.
    Soil kills them too. Use sphagnum.
    I've grown hundreds, if you need a source.

    • @rizzorizzo2311
      @rizzorizzo2311 Рік тому +1

      Nutrient rich soil kills them, not soil. I have grown hundreds from seed and I use peat moss and have had great success rates. Sphagnum runs the risk of the seeds falling too far down into the media and not being able to sprout high enough to survive. And the only reason to keep it in the fridge is if you’re storing them. They don’t need any stratification, they can be planted immediately after harvesting.

    I want a/some carnivorous plants. Mainly want a ping and/or a drosera to catch fungus gnats. Do Venus fly traps need an actual supply of flies/insects larger than tiny gnats to be fed or will they survive just as a normal houseplant with whatever average number of pests may be around we don’t even realize? Not like a dirty hoarder place just an average clean home in a sub tropic zone. I’d get one if I can essentially leave it to feed itself but I don’t want to be having to supply it with bugs. And did I hear, and is it true that carnivorous plants should be in a growing medium with like no nutrients, so like not regular soil? Or am I confusing that with something else?

    • @BurntToast-mf7pc
      @BurntToast-mf7pc Рік тому

      Depends on what you're saying. You are allowed to not feed your flytrap, because there is still TEENY TINY BITS of nutrients, even in sphagnum or peat moss(the most common medium to grow them), and they photosynthesize those nutrients for well... nutrients. Eating bugs is just a side job/snack for them. You don't have to feed them unless the medium literally doesn't have any nutrients or is inert(silicate sand, perlite).

    Do not cut the flower of your venus flytraps. They can bloom just fine. Mine have bloomed twice already and are still going strong on their 3rd year of life
