I’ve been using pon for a year now, all my plants converted and I’ve successfully rooted cuttings and grown from seed. I do flush the pon regularly and use liquid gold leaf to feed them, so far they all seem happy which makes me happy 😊
Because its in a clear container, algae will naturally thrive when the medium is wet and exposed to light, a quick fix for this will be to put the plants in a cover pot 😊
I've got my calatheas in pon in diy self-watering pots (filled with distilled water) and they're thriving. It makes their care so much easier since I just refill their reservoirs once a month.
@@aliciaparker8004 if they’re baby plants they usually don’t fuss too much. Established calatheas do experience a bit of shock when the roots get unsettled. I found the best results when I removed their soil and then put them in water for 1-2 weeks before moving them to pon. Make sure the pon is rinsed well. With self-watering pots with wicks I often had to modify the wicks to make sure all the pon was evenly moist. Never tap water. I’ve had 13 different species do very well with that setup and no additional humidity. I find even moisture is much more important than humidity for them. Good luck!

great video. . thanks for the algae issue in the glass vessels. wrap the glass with black fabric or dark non trasparent paper for about 3 days check to see if its cleared, if not give it another day or two. Ater that you will be good to go. If you continue to place in direct sun with will start again to encourage algae growth. Just repeat the process.

This is amazing. I have been researching this for a few weeks, I found the zeolite at Lowe's but was struggling to find small lava rock. I'll definitely be try this, I love Home Hardware, it's the best. 💚💚💚
Have you ever heard of maifan stone? I found a mix of red and black lava rock with zeolite and maifanitum stone and I googled it and it helps remove mercury, lead, cadmium, and other heavy metals by attracting these dangerous molecules to their rocky surface looks like I might try it in a pon mix.

I love this video. My decision to root in perlite was just last weekend. Cuttings of my investment Hoya . 9 jars. . leca I'm using for plants I have an issue w root rot. Philo anything 😂. I have black carpet in the entire apartment. The DIRT IS EVERYWHERE 😂 no clue how that happens. Seriously. Pon was an idea awhile ago but not enough to keep my attraction to experiment w at the same time as leca and perlite. Thinking if I am going to try might as well be doing it when I have alot to do and extra cuttings and lightly rooted just in case not a good thing I still should have enough to be successful investment. Lechuza Pon is apparently more expensive in the USA than it is in the EU, about 50% higher in price. Here (EU) it is more expensive to buy pumice etc. and mix it yourself, can buy Lechuza Pon for less than half the cost, per liter, than what pumice sells for.
I use both of those as well! Just FYI: LavaGrip is black pumice (lapillo). I've been using orchid pots and putting that in a cache pot with my "pon." I heard you don't have to flush with pon like you do with Leca; however, I like to err on the side of caution ;P

@@wildfern If you have a Brad-point drill bit (it makes cleaner holes), you can make extra holes on the sides of nursery pots for more aeration, or use a Dremel/Rotary tool to cut in slits. Cheap/easy way to reuse some old pots instead of buying new orchid pots :) I am always running out of cache pots too so I've been using some deeper saucers until I get more.

I love propagating/growing in straight up perlite! I don't know how it would do as a substitute in this mix (I haven't tried it), but you can use it semi-hydroponically alone with the same method I showed in this video. I also have a video all about it, as mentioned. Perlite is awesome, I'm sure you will have no trouble using it up once you start experimenting! And if you do substitute it in this pon recipe, let me know how it goes :)
I like how pon looks like and how easy it is to disinfect for reuse (compared to the regular potting mix). The downside I'm looking at is how expensive it is, which leads me to a question- May I ask if there's a substitute to zeolite? How did you water propagate your ctenanthe?! She’s beautiful, I’m scared to do so to my ctenanthe/calathea due to having to use division method but I’d love to prop them so I can prop in water and then grow semi hydro, since my prayer plants were the first plants I tried to convert from soil to leca in April and I killed them due to inexperience 😩. But I do want to have them grow and live their best lives in semi hydro so I plan on trying again soon. We like pon for the same reasons, so I’m glad I found this video (I have a bag of diy pon waiting to be used) & can’t wait to browse the others you have!
Glad you are having success with your Pon growing, it is the first video I have seen somebody doing this. Now a question, the first plant you potted had three leaves, only one looked like it was good, why did you not cut off the other two leaves? wouldn't the plant be putting its energy into keeping them alive, where as if they were cut off all the energy would go into new growth.
That's kind of a misconception! When leaves start to turn yellow it's actually because the plant is pulling resources out of them to store/reuse - so generally it's better to leave a leaf until it's fully dead. (Unless its like a pest or rot that could spread)
I'm wondering if the heavy wet rocks might damage delicate roots? I've wondered that about Leca also. Just a few dry pebbles won't hurt but a cup of wet pebbles are HEAVY!

I know this is a bit of an old comment but figured I’d answer based on my research and experience. Pon is probably easier simply due to ph issues that leca can create. I’m more experienced with leca and love it, but it can be a lot of work with nutrients/reservoirs and flushes, balancing ph pretty constantly. I’m just now trying pon over the last few months and it’s less work than leca. Leca gives you quicker visible results because you can dial in nutrients and get pretty explosive growth whereas pon has a much slower release fertilizer component. You could probably get similar results if you made your own pon and used your own liquid nutes, as with leca. I’ve found that full/semi hydro is needed to get those results (roots partially submerged) rather than wicking systems but that could just be dependent on environmental factors.
I got the same lava a few weeks ago, but mine was smaller (I think.. yours looks a bit bigger than mine in the vid, but can’t be sure) and it was wet and rinsing seemed to disintegrate a lot of it.. very messy and rinsed black. I wonder if they come in different grades or if mine was a bag that got thrown around a lot or something..
You just need to put in another pot to block out the light to prevent and if you are already dealing with algae, hydrogen peroxide wash/rinse gets rid of it :)
You'd end up with all of the dust/debris accumulating at the bottom of the container. I don't know if it would hurt your plants, I just want to minimize it.
Do you think peperomias would do well in pon? Most of my plants are peperomias and I'd love to switch them over to an inorganic substrate but I've found that leca is not the best for them. Also do you have to use nutrient water like for leca? Or would using liquidirt with fertilizer be fine for them?
I think if you didn't use a passive hydro method, then probably! Peperomia grow in rocky and craggy areas often so that's likely to do well. Semihydro would be too wet for them, I think. Unless they got a good drying-out period maybe
I don't own any peperomia, so I can't speak to them. However, I will say that I have had a MUCH easier time with pon than with leca! I don't use any nutrient water since I've added slow release fertilizer, but if I had not added that, then yes I would use my nutrient water.
I’ve been researching all about pon, diy pon, fertilizers to use, the best lava rocks and zeolites and pumice, and just about anything I can find. I am struggling because I don’t want to buy the osmocote, and don’t know if liquidirt or superthrive can be used instead, as plant food. I also have the miracle-grow all purpose fertilizer that I haven’t used in forever (not a fan), but wondering if I can use either one of those w pon, since I have them… any thoughts, anyone? I
@@wildfern thank you!! Turns out I got TWO bags of zeolites, rather than one zeolite and one lava rock. Sigh. And I got FloorDry which is not pumice, it’s diatomaceous earth. So much for my dang “research!” 🫠 now I’m trying to figure out if I can still use them and just get lava rock to add to my mix, idk. I feel so silly 🙈 gonna transfer some heart leaf philodendron to my mix in the meantime and see how it does, which I continue with my “research” lol thank you anyways for the info!!
It actually appears that I can still use the diatomaceous earth granules and bigger zeolites in my mix, and I’ll just buy lava rocks to ensure there’s better aeration. And I’ll incorporate some of these mediums to my soil for my outdoor veggie garden! Not as terrible of a mistake, thankfully…
Omg alsoooo I’ve been having the worst luck with prop boxes :( do you leave the lid cracked open to let air in? Does yours grow mold on top? That’s what happens to mine. And then all my plants in there start rotting. I’m gonna try again with a bigger box because maybe that was my issue. I dunnooo
That sounds like its not getting enough light on top, imho? I dont leave my lids cracked, I just open them once a day or every other day and let some fresh air in.
@@anniesziebert4322 hmm maybbeee. I kept the box right by my back sliding glass door. And I have grow lights so I have no idea. And I started opening it to let some air in and then close the lid but still rotting and smelly. Maybe too much water? So I tried re doing it and then it with less water then it dried up so fast
I feel so bad when people ask me this because I have never had mould on mine! So I don't have any great advice. Honestly, sometimes I only open mine once a week and they are fine. Good light is def important, I have mine either in windows or under grow lights. Hope you are able to resolve it!! x
@@wildfern I think I must just be doing something wrong. I was using a small tubberware container so maybe it just wasn’t a big enough box. I’ve only had luck water and soil propping 😅
I had this issue when the substrate was to wet. With a prop box, it needs to be damp, not wet. Think the damp paper towel you use to wipe down counters, not wet lime hair fresh out the shower. If you're heavy handed, mist until the desired wetness is reached instead.

Yes! You can buy it premixed as "pon" but it's still these same ingredients :)

I find peperomia respond really well to Pon, I have had issues getting the watering right with them in the past.

They might! I try to be gentle, but I'm not too worried because the roots will grow back.

Hi Fern! I’m late to this pon party but what are your thoughts on leca vs pon? I really want to experiment with both but I’m torn between the to try first. Does one have a higher success right or is just more simple? Thanks!!
I know this is a bit of an old comment but figured I’d answer based on my research and experience. Pon is probably easier simply due to ph issues that leca can create. I’m more experienced with leca and love it, but it can be a lot of work with nutrients/reservoirs and flushes, balancing ph pretty constantly. I’m just now trying pon over the last few months and it’s less work than leca. Leca gives you quicker visible results because you can dial in nutrients and get pretty explosive growth whereas pon has a much slower release fertilizer component. You could probably get similar results if you made your own pon and used your own liquid nutes, as with leca. I’ve found that full/semi hydro is needed to get those results (roots partially submerged) rather than wicking systems but that could just be dependent on environmental factors.

I got the same lava a few weeks ago, but mine was smaller (I think.. yours looks a bit bigger than mine in the vid, but can’t be sure) and it was wet and rinsing seemed to disintegrate a lot of it.. very messy and rinsed black. I wonder if they come in different grades or if mine was a bag that got thrown around a lot or something..

Help me! Isn’t pumice a smaller lava rock? I’m trying to make my own pon as well.
Pumice is a type of lava rock, but it has a different density so absorbs moisture & drains differently. You can get it in various sizes.
Would love to use pon but I love my clay pots. Any suggestions?
Put a plastic liner that is big enough to sit on the rim while leaving room for a water reservoir below

Have you found a solution to the algae build up issue?
You just need to put in another pot to block out the light to prevent and if you are already dealing with algae, hydrogen peroxide wash/rinse gets rid of it :)
What if you don't rinse it off first? Would that be bad for the plants?
You'd end up with all of the dust/debris accumulating at the bottom of the container. I don't know if it would hurt your plants, I just want to minimize it.

Do you think peperomias would do well in pon? Most of my plants are peperomias and I'd love to switch them over to an inorganic substrate but I've found that leca is not the best for them. Also do you have to use nutrient water like for leca? Or would using liquidirt with fertilizer be fine for them?
I think if you didn't use a passive hydro method, then probably! Peperomia grow in rocky and craggy areas often so that's likely to do well. Semihydro would be too wet for them, I think. Unless they got a good drying-out period maybe
I don't own any peperomia, so I can't speak to them. However, I will say that I have had a MUCH easier time with pon than with leca! I don't use any nutrient water since I've added slow release fertilizer, but if I had not added that, then yes I would use my nutrient water.
I’ve been researching all about pon, diy pon, fertilizers to use, the best lava rocks and zeolites and pumice, and just about anything I can find. I am struggling because I don’t want to buy the osmocote, and don’t know if liquidirt or superthrive can be used instead, as plant food. I also have the miracle-grow all purpose fertilizer that I haven’t used in forever (not a fan), but wondering if I can use either one of those w pon, since I have them… any thoughts, anyone? I
you can definitely use liquidirt and superthrive! I'd be a little more careful with the miracle-gro since it would be more likely to cause burn.
@@wildfern thank you!! Turns out I got TWO bags of zeolites, rather than one zeolite and one lava rock. Sigh. And I got FloorDry which is not pumice, it’s diatomaceous earth. So much for my dang “research!” 🫠 now I’m trying to figure out if I can still use them and just get lava rock to add to my mix, idk. I feel so silly 🙈 gonna transfer some heart leaf philodendron to my mix in the meantime and see how it does, which I continue with my “research” lol thank you anyways for the info!!
It actually appears that I can still use the diatomaceous earth granules and bigger zeolites in my mix, and I’ll just buy lava rocks to ensure there’s better aeration. And I’ll incorporate some of these mediums to my soil for my outdoor veggie garden! Not as terrible of a mistake, thankfully…
Omg alsoooo I’ve been having the worst luck with prop boxes :( do you leave the lid cracked open to let air in? Does yours grow mold on top? That’s what happens to mine. And then all my plants in there start rotting. I’m gonna try again with a bigger box because maybe that was my issue. I dunnooo
That sounds like its not getting enough light on top, imho? I dont leave my lids cracked, I just open them once a day or every other day and let some fresh air in.
@@anniesziebert4322 hmm maybbeee. I kept the box right by my back sliding glass door. And I have grow lights so I have no idea. And I started opening it to let some air in and then close the lid but still rotting and smelly. Maybe too much water? So I tried re doing it and then it with less water then it dried up so fast
I feel so bad when people ask me this because I have never had mould on mine! So I don't have any great advice. Honestly, sometimes I only open mine once a week and they are fine. Good light is def important, I have mine either in windows or under grow lights. Hope you are able to resolve it!! x
@@wildfern I think I must just be doing something wrong. I was using a small tubberware container so maybe it just wasn’t a big enough box. I’ve only had luck water and soil propping 😅
I had this issue when the substrate was to wet. With a prop box, it needs to be damp, not wet. Think the damp paper towel you use to wipe down counters, not wet lime hair fresh out the shower. If you're heavy handed, mist until the desired wetness is reached instead.
