- In todays video I'll be explaining everything you need to know about PON for beginners! It is a super easy substrate to work with and I find that my plants love PON. About half of my plant collection is soil free at this moment and I'm really loving it. PON like anything requires some maintenance but I find that it's maintenance I can deal with. At the end of the video I share an update on some of my plants in PON.

🤔 Very beautiful hostess. Clearly knowledgeable and passionate about your hobby.
In the long run it’s better for a multitude of ways to make your own Pon. I utilize Calcined Clay and “ Special Kitty “ natural clay cat litter in my home made Pon. The two clays give a number of nutrients and have a excellent water holding and wicking capacity.
I wish you success with your UA-cam endeavors and your hobby. ✊🏽✊🏿✊🏾
This video was exactly what I needed 😫 my black velvet is so fussy and I’m ready to transfer it. Thank you so much for this video!!
Now I’m up late messing with these plants 😂😂. Thank you soooo much please continue to make more videos.
😂😂I’ve been there and thank you thank you thank you..I really appreciate hearing that
Shout out NCC! You must be local 😃. Congrats on your success with subscribers and thanks for the helpful content!
Love watching your videos! You are so attentive to your plants.
Aww wow thanks soo much! I really do love them lol
Your video is so helpful. I tried leca snd rotted my plant's. So going to try pon. Has anyone told you thst your voice is so calming? ❤
Lol Yes thank you! and I hope you have a better experience with pon
This is completely new to me. You explained this very well. Thank you
You’re welcome! Happy to hear that..Please lemme know if you decide to try it out!
Amazing tips! I have been using Pon for a while now and I love it!
Thanks!! Me too I think 70% of my collection is in pon now
Thank you so much for the PON lesson! Your plants are beautiful 🌱 🤩 💚
Love your video!! Super helpful, thank you!! 💚🪴🙌
Thanks so much 💚 and Happy to hear it helped!
I LOVE Little Emerald Thumb!!!! She does substrates right!! Great video so much info! Thank you
Thank you, Lauren, for this video. You are a lifesaver! I love that you give the basics and you are thorough in your research! Saves me the time to research it! 😅
Lol you’re welcome! That’s what I’m here for🙌🏽
Love the tips. I wil tru some of them. Thank you for the video! 💐
Of course! Happy you found it helpful
Because of you, I have a better understanding with pons. I purchase a bag and when I first used it plant failure. I watched an old video and you encouraged me to try again. You said when transferring your plant from soil first let it be in water for awhile and then put it in pons
Yay!! I’m happy it was helpful and yea sometimes that middle transition period in water jus gives you a chance to see how the plant will react.
Anyone reading this. PON is a good substrate, but you must be careful with it. I purchased my first Thai Constellation and put it in PON. The roots went bonkers, so I decided to repot it in cocopeat. That was a big mistake as my plant rotted and died in a week. If you put your Thai in PON leave it there. PON makes the roots airy and light and the cocopeat was too heavy. I purchased another Thai and used a substrate that is chunky with biochar, compost, leca, cococoir and chunky perlite. Be mindful of what you are doing. Nice vid by the way! I don't rinse my PON because I feel I am rinsing away the fertilizer but that is just me.
Rinse the pon, the fertilizers are infused you can't rinse it away, like lecca pon can create water roots on your plants which differ from traditional roots. If you want to switch from pon to soil of any kind go to a stratum or pearlite and then to a chunky soiless mix otherwise you'll kill the plant. However pon is going to likely be best for most house plants. Not all so do research. Thai cons are a great pon candidate due to their susceptibility to root rot but transferring from pon to soil is not advisable
German lava. There are so many volcanoes in Germany they just don’t know what to do with all the lava they have lying around lol.
Thank you for the propagation info, most videos don’t explain the care after placing a propogation in pon substrate …
You've explained this all so good! I've just made my own for the first time fingers crossed it works. Zeolites is used for eco-friendly traction control instead of sidewalk salts same for the lava stone. Pumice however in my area and on Amazon is bonkers🤑 so I subbed for perlite. I figure the weight of the rest will keep it all from rising up. I've sub'd and now going to binge watch your content 😁👍🏻
Aww thank you soo much and I’m happy the info has been helpful for you.. pon and semi hydro can be a bit of trial and error lemme know how it works for you..I been loving it and thanks for the info on zeolite!
@@PlantsNTings Whewww I just fixed all my typos hadn't had coffee yet 😁
Excellent!, I will be purchasing pon for my Black Velvet and a few of my other plants. Keep up the good work🐝🌸
Awesome! Lemme know how you like it 💚
Will do
@@beatricegreene3836 Hi! Did you change your Black Velvet to pon? Did it do well?
Hi! Yes its been in pon for about a year now and it’s doing very well
@@PlantsNTings Yay! I will try mine! I changed my second Silver Dragon from soil to pon this morning, but I've killed Black Velvet 3 times (soil only) and I'm scared to kill a 4th one. But, at this point, what do I have to lose, right? I obviously do NOT know how to grow it in soil, might as well try something new. I appreciate your reply!

Hope it’s helpful
I just purchased the Jack’s but I haven’t started using it. I’m still a soil but I do add orchid bark, pumice, charcoal, perlite, and warm castings in my soil mix.
Nice! I’ve heard all good things about jacks..your soil mix sounds awesome too..I do still have several plants in soil and some that I’ve received in a mix like yours and they’re loving it! I always like watching people make they’re soil mixes lol😍
Wow, you're gorg!
Thank you!☺️
This saves me money because I was going to switch from soil to leca! 😮
That’s great! It’s actually a bit more expensive for me than leca🫠
@@PlantsNTings oh wow I figured all the nutrients needed with leca would add up.
Oh well when you think about it that way ..that may be true..cuz most pon comes with slow release fertilizer in it
See I was the silly one that bought crap tons of LECA, nutrients, etc, LOVED it, but then found Pon and loved it even more! Definitely a big advocate for pon, and her video is AMAZING. Wish I would have come across it sooner!!
@@MrsMeeker0328 I switched to LECA lol
I use pon to transfer from soil then I transfer it to LECA
LOVELY. Hi good morning watching from England... Thank you for sharing your knowledge of plants very much appreciate... Please stay connected.. Love Sally and Paul 🦋🌹🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶

I wanna try pon but I don’t want to put my rare plants in pon😂 I might try it with my syngonium albo 🤔
Lol yea I wouldn’t experiment with those jus yet but I do have 2 syngoniums in pon and they love it!
Hi my name is Robin, I just started useing pon,I really like pon. Just wondering if I can pot my cactus in pon and I have pontsettiae as well? You explain vary 👍
Thank you! I do mix half pon half soil for my cactus but I haven’t tried straight pon..if you do try it I wouldn’t keep a reservoir and I’d be sure to let it completely dry out before watering again..I’m not sure about pontsettiae sorry I haven’t had one before
Babygirl its dead. 😅😅😅That would be me giggling over the stump
😂😂
Hello I am new to pon. Where did you get that beautiful glass pt with the drain holes?
Hey! I bought it goodwill but I drilled the hole with a diamond bit
@@PlantsNTingsthat’s so clever!
Do you think flushing pon is important?
Sorry about the typos, damned predictive text !!
lol no worries I understood you
Hello, I'm new to Pon. I transferred all my plants to Pon last week, but without using self watering pot. Can you please let me know how often I need to water my plants? Because it's hard to know when I need to water it. Also, I mixed Pon with moss for my plants. Thanks a lot!
I wouldn’t mix moss with the pon. It’s not a substrate to mix!
Hi. Are you using pots with drainage? If so you’d water them the same as when they were in dirt. Pon does tend to hold a bit more water for a bit longer tho..if your plants are in pots without drainage then I’d just water when you no longer see water sitting at the bottom of the pot. Also I do not have experience mixing straight pon with moss. I’ve mixed the 2 with other substrates but not just those 2 alone so I can’t speak on whether that’s a good option or not. Sorry.
Forgive me if you answered this! But I don't think you did, I listened in segments while at work so I might have missed it😅 So I've not really heard anyone mention anything about how they add extra nutrients to the slow release fertilized pon, but is that a thing? Ive been thinking about adding my flora series at diluted amounts to one of my waterings a month... I already use superthrive, Diamond Nectar and CalMag (calmag only for the first 2 week transition). What do you think?
I was still adding fertilizer and i didn’t have any issues. so I’d say deff with caution you can but like you said a diluted amount. You can also jus test it out on a plant or 2 to be sure it’s ok.
@@PlantsNTings good idea! Thanks so much!!
How do you know how much water to out in the close container?
I fill it to the bottom 3rd. Unless it’s a new propagation I’ll fill it to where the roots stop.
@@PlantsNTings where can I buy this product from. Tried looking in Amazon with no success.
The brand lechuza pon has been sold out for a long while now in the US so I purchase from plant sellers. Here’s a couple:
www.plantlifelex.com/shop/p/custom-made-pon-mix-2lb-bag-semi-hydroponics-potting-medium
www.etsy.com/listing/1060348823/
What liquid fertilizer do you use
Jack houseplant special. I believe I have a link in the description.
Wait! Noho in mass?! I'm out in the Berkshires
Mines are all dying..there is mold, the leave are turning all soft and roots are roting
Sorry to hear that.. could be a combination of over watering and our not enough light.. usually the latter
I have the same problem. I took several plants out of the pon, boiled it, rinsed it again and replanted. In the kitchen, it was a mess. I decided to spray the top of the rest of my pots with hydrogen peroxide. Some were on the window sill so not sure the cause…
Do you make your own pon? And if so what and how much of each item do you use?
Hi! Not at this time I just use the lechuza brand when I can get it. Or I use little emerald thumb from Etsy which I do really like. I do think I’ll eventually need to resort to making my own tho😕
I like you video, you sound funny and sympathetic, unfortunately the informations you gave about adding fertilizer are seriously misleading and I'll explain you why. There is a very thorough video on the channel of a Canadian soil scientist and she points out that you one want to use PON than absolutely have to use ONLY inorganic fertilizer since organic fertilizers will turn the whole thing into a toxic mix for your plant. Search it and listen carefully.
Thanks for sharing! I’m not sure but I believe I only mentioned adding additional slow release Fertilizer after some time but I agree you’d want to choose one that is inorganic
dont rinse it, you are washing away the ingredients/fertilizer etc
Thanks! Yea I don’t rinse my pon anymore
