Bushwalkers describe Tasmania's Western Arthur Range as "arguably the wildest and most spectacular part of the south-west.''
Having never visited the range myself I head out on an overnight hike to visit Lake Oberon 'The Gem of the South West' which is roughly located halfway along the range.

So Lovely Mother Nature at her. Thanks for sharing !👧
Thank you Rob. As older Tasmanians my wife and I are no longer able undertake adventures such as this and because of physical considerations our most adventuresome sojourn was an overnight visit to lake Nameless. Thank you so very much for sharing your research and videos on UA-cam. There is so much of our state to see when you leave the car behind.
Great video and scenery Rob. Glad you shook off your virus to get through it.
Another wonderful adventure. Thanks for all you do to share the beauty with us, Rob....
Hi i live in Hobart 57 yrs young. travel all over this Island :-) 4x4 and motorcycling , camping , prospecting. Your Vids rule the WWW . Great Respect and Huge thanks u do Tassie Justice SIR :-)
You keep on producing the most beautiful content. Please don't risk yourself when you're feeling ill.
Great video Robzombie.😂
I would like to see you make a video of catching some footage of the giant freshwater crayfish in Tassie I know your not allowed to trap them but you could take your diving equipment with you and catch some footage on your underwater go pro, that would be wicked.
You also could do some prospecting while you were there and you should leave your trail cams on for a few days while you camp and try for some footage of the illusive Tassie 🐅. Just an idea but I haven't seen the giant crayfish yet, I think that they live in the creeks of the far northwest but cause your a local you would probably know exactly where they are.
Best of luck friend.🐅🤗
Thanks for all the tracks ,videos and shots on the way!
Hey Rob I ventured out this way in 2020 before lockdown. It was shitty weather but we managed to do the full traverse. I'm painting Lake Oberon at the moment and my photos were very average and few between due to the weather, so your video has been a great help. thanks again.
Great video Rob. Thanks for sharing the awesome trek. Keep em coming!!
Looking forward to the scenery!👧♥️
Blown Away absolutly stunning
It sure is!
Dear Rob, Thank you for taking this ole girl, on your adventures, I've just found your channel and binding a few esps. liking them all.. 😊😊😊
Thanks Jan
Okay I’m definitely adding this hike to my list
Great footage - loved the time lapse with the clouds rolling in.
I loved the adventure rob, I'm 80 i wish I had done these lovely walks when i was younger. Regards Tezza
Here we go on another adventure. Can’t wait as I know the scenery will be amazing!👧♥️
Another magnificent video Rob. Thanks for making such an effort. The high production values do the scenery justice. Well done.
A pleasure as always mate hope I can do that one day oh that’s right I’m stuck at the rivers 🙄😂
This one’s no good for you mate not enough scrub bashing
It’s a brilliant area. Great to see your video. Memories 💚
I am a geologist , retired, loving the contorted mountains!
WOW, what a video!! Definitely my favourite so far which is really saying something as I love them all. The scientific lead in was terrific and the way you captured that timeless landscape has made me want to pull out my hiking boots and do this walk too. Great work soldiering on when you obviously felt like crap. The eagle in the beginning was a real treat 👍🏽🥰
Wow! Thank you Dina. But it can’t be better than my Franklin video because I remember that was playing on your big screen when Erin first texted me 🥰🥰🥰 😃 I’m glad you liked the intro I wanna do more fun ones like this in the future. Keeps my knowledge up to scratch 😂
@@Rob.Parsons Well done Rob I'd have to say that seeing the wedge tailed eagle take flight from a tree was a real treat. I have not seen one of those in Tasmania, for years now. They'd have to be one of the most beautiful birds in the wilderness that I can think of.....Pete from Devonport
That eagle you seen was a younger wedge tail (highly unseen or photographed ) actually was thought they had been no more living or very few ) but IV seen one up northern Tas that had 1.5m wing span and stood half the height of a paddock fence.
Just recommended a family member watch this one and was compelled to enjoy it immensely again. Well done Rob, thank you. p.s. I have an urge to send you some fine Merino woollies.
still so many places throughout our state I have yet to go
I've been to junction creek when I was 12, climbed mt hesperus. I know what an exhausting walk it is.
Hectic!
@@Rob.Parsons it might have been 20 years ago, but I have some fond memories of the south west, including Mt Anne also at 12 years old.
New bucket list
1-Lake Oberon [ ]
Ive just moved to Hobart I cant wait to visit these places
Welcome to Tassie, There’s so much to see!
Rob, once again you have excelled. Western Arthurs is truly a magnificent place with so much to see, you only scratched the surface. You released this video while I was on the Eliza Plateau. Another amazing walk worth doing, but of vertical and less horizontal. Very impressed with the push to the Lake in the time you made it in. Well done again.
Thanks lad! Seems so many people who watch my videos we’re out and about down that way. Pretty speccy time of year!
Great video thanks. This hike is on my to do list. Love you hat btw. Cheers.
Cheers homie
Hahaha! You actually said you love horizontal. Excellent.
of course! horizontal is a great protector of our beloved Huon pines. ;-)
What an epic place! Love to see it but think I’d need a body transplant to be able to accomplish it! Thanks for sharing
Epic 👍
Keep it up your amazing work 👌
Hope you’re feeling better now mate. Love all the videos you make. Cheers for making them, I’m sure a fair bit of effort goes into each one. Really appreciate it
Oh thank you!
Great hike crazy rock formations. My wife and l did Black Bluff on Christmas. Best way to celebrate special occasions. Hope you feel better.
yeah the metamorphosed rocks are crazy up there. Was a good way to break in the new year. Thanks George!
Downloading this video to watch later and hopefully do myself I've heard it's amazing
Awesome hope you enjoyed it mate!
@@Rob.Parsons everything about your vids are so underrated mate the footage editing the shit you do it's unreal honestly should have millions of subscribers hopefully you do if that's what your looking for ,, epic bro 🤘🤘👌
G'day Rob, I have found some space to catch up time on some of your doings, congrats. to you and Erin on your engagement, looking forward to making the trip to Tas in October to join in the celebrations. Enjoyed the Oberon and the massive history of Adamsfield, WOW that was enjoyable, all the best mate to you and Erin ,your old uncle Mike
Thanks mike looking forward to see you in october!
SPECTACULAR!!!
wow stunning landscape I think I was born in the wrong country
Brilliant video has given us a little insight into our challenge this week
Bloody awesome I hope you enjoy!
did this walk last January and even vlogged it inspired by you! (although i never posted it). Was very hyped to see this video pop up in my feed, great video as usual!
Oh why not? That’s amazing! I’m very humbled!
Loved watching this video - brought back memories from my younger days hiking NZ.
Thanks for sharing your stories and talents. Another excellent video.
Appreciate it mate thanks!
This is on my to do list - maybe in 2023 . What book were you reading at the start? I have the Chapman's & Abels books.
Highly recommend it mate. the book is South West Tasmania by Ken collins. Enjoy!
I don'ton't think I have that one. I'm on 29 Tassie books. A new updated Abel book this year and Frenchman's Cap hopefully to add to my list. Cheers.
Nice work and thanks for sharing. We hiked the range Jan 2019 your vid brought back some nice memories. Loved the beginning with the explanation of the range formation. Hope you're feeling better now.
Feeling much better now. Thanks 8
Exceptionally good hike and another captivating production. Well done Rob!
The night you spent in the car, was the night I was camping at Lake Judd just up the road. Great video brother, can't wait to go to the Western Arthurs one day soon.
Oh awesome. I’d love to check Judd out one day it looks amazing.
Majestic place.
That certainly is an amazing place Rob I would love to get back to Tassie one day in the near future.
It’s a magic part of the world
Just outstanding, stay safe.
Thanks dude!
My 7 year old daughter says your videos are amazing and so do I.
I walked this track about 3 times 20 years ago. No board walk then. Camped down by the lake but it rained solid for 3 days and flooded my tent. Fortunately it was waterproof but there was a lot of condensation and my down bag was loosing loft. Next day was sunny and I moved on and dried out.
oh no sounds like a nightmare! glad there weather picked up for ya.
@@Rob.Parsons It was ok. I had quality gear. Learnt the hard way at the start with cheap gear.
Great Journey Again Rob...Thanks Mate and have a Happy and Safe New Year.👍
Thanks Paul!
Thanks again what a spot to wake up
so cool hey, looking forward to exploring more up there in. the future.
Stunning scenery. Another great video thank you
My pleasure 😇
Thanks for taking us on this spectacular hike and letting us be vicarious adventurers
I’m glad you enjoyed it sarah thank you 😊
How you're all good now? Glad you went that route as I'll never get there so a spectacular hike & the geology is epic, I do love that quartzite! - & I guess those were amazing orchids? I like the history too, & you taking us off the beaten path in search of bringing the Past back to life & discovering Tassie 'secrets'...- take care & keep well, look forward to the next Adventure!
I'm feeling a lot better now, that cough took it out of me for a few days. I thought they were orchids too but upon checking they are Tasmanian Purple Stars, or Isophysis and it is a monotypic genus, meaning there is only one species of this very distinctive herbaceous perennial and it is endemic to Tasmania. Crazy hey
@@Rob.Parsons Glad to hear that - hope it's gone never to return! The Purple Stars were quite stunning - isn't Tassie grand? Thanks for sharing that, I don't s'pose they are a common thing? - sometimes it's worth stopping & really looking over a patch of ground just to see what might be lurking beyond the big picture - like with finding gold in a hidden crevice. Happy hikes - see you on the next one!
Thanks for another great video. Hope you feel better soon and thanks for taking us all along for the ride 😊 I'm getting to see parts of my island that I most likely never will and you are inspiring me to get out there and see the places that are within my capabilities
Thanks Lena I’m feeling a lot better now one week later. That’s really nice that you’ve been inspired to get out there I hope the wilderness fills you up the same way it has for me. Thanks!
Wow, quite the dramatic change in weather just from Lake Cygnus to Square Lake! Good old Tassie weather delivering the goods. Two days, or is it seasons in one day! 😉😏
Hehe yeah the weather runs it’s own rules up there it was forecast to rain in the afternoon though.
Fantastic video! Really enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing😊.
My pleasure!
great vid rob i see more of tassie from n great pictures, thanks.
Thanks guys glad you enjoyed it 😃
A specy hike. The flora upon those ranges, wonderful captures. The geological folds, amazing. The views, outstanding. The time you took, phenomenal. I hope that burned the crony out of you. Looking forward to your next share with us.
Thank you for your beautifully poetic comment 🥰
really nice imagery Rob. And thanx for the geology tutorial!
My pleasure mate it keeps me learning this video business. Cheers!
… and plan a return traverse as far as West Portal then back and out via Moraine K in mid February. I’m an old bugger though Rob and wouldn’t pretend to match your pace. Well done and, as usual, beautiful camera work, editing and soundtrack.
Thanks Glenn yeah I’ll go back soon and see the rest of it. No need to rush it I’m just too used to Jane pace. 😂 gotta keep the legs in tune. Glad you enjoyed it mate thanks.
Great video again. Western Arthurs are amongst my best ever hikes. I took a heck of a lot longer to get to Lake Oberon. Glad to see you didn't take your bride. Take a tip from an old bushwalker. Just because she marries you, doesn't mean your wife wants to do the Jane River or the Arthurs.
haha ill never say never! Thanks John
Another epic vid. I love the effect the wind has on the water. What an awesome place, congrats on getting engaged too!
Thanks so much!
Dude this is so crazy for me. I've been following your channel for a little while now and was camping at Oberon the same night as you which is blowing my mind. Should've come over to the hang spot and had dinner with us! Glad you showed the wind that night too because it was pumping.
Oh really? Haha that’s insane. Yeah I wasn’t sure about socialising much since I was pretty crook I didn’t want to get anyone sick, especially since most people were doing the traverse.
Awesome video mate!! The wild orchids, scenery and mountains look pretty spectacular!!
She’s bloody magic up there lad!
Geology captures, wicked! Tassie botanicals, out of control! Silent landscape stills awesome. Bucket Hat... getting seasoned. Happy NY Rob...sendit!🤣❤️👏
Thank you mate!
Happy new year buddy stay safe your videos just show how special Tasmania is so much to see 😷
Thanks Melnick I’m glad you enjoy them. 😃
Good to see you again Rob. Wishing you an awesome 2022. Great content as always 💖
Appreciate it Mary thanks
Always a great place. Loved the video work of slow moving scenes interspersed with time lapses. Good work. Well done.
Cheers Bernd!
Happy 2022 and congrats on your engagement. Thanks for sharing another of your awesome adventures👌 I'll have to add this to my list of things I'd like to do next time I visit Tassie, might need a longer holiday 😀
Thanks Dan yeah you should definitely get up there the scenery is unreal!
Thank you Rob for your breathtaking video, the scenery you captured was out of this world. Well done mate you are an inspiration. Have you ever done a hike to "Federation Peak" ? In the late 80's my wife and I took a joy flight over south West Tassie which included Federation Peak and to our amazment there was a hiker on top waving to us as we flew by, something i have never forgotten. Stay safe and congrats on your engagement. Cheers.
Aw cheers mate that's really kind of you. The scenery did all the work though! I've never done Fed peak actually was thinking about doing it the other day should make a fun video. just gotta look into it a bit more and make sure its all safe ect. That's amazing you saw a hiker on the top what a moment. He must of felt like the king of thew world at that moment, Thanks for the comment mate cheers!
class vid man, looked amazing. also, great hat haha
Cheers lad!
looks awesome, what guide book are you reading in the car? thanks
South West Tasmania - Ken Collins
Wow, this is spectacular! Thanks for the amazing footage, as always 🙌
Thanks guys!
Another wicked video Rob, hanging out to follow your adventures in 2022 🤙🏼
Thanks lad! Plenty to do!
Stunning scenery and really well shot, as with all your videos mate. This one is definitely on the future hikes list for me. Thanks for sharing the trip.
She's a ripper range you'll enjoy it, im looking forward to getting back there before summers out and smash out the rest of it, appreciate the comment cheers.
Aw thank you!
Loved the vid , gorgeous scenery when it was overcast and misty , would definitely cast it in a different light if it was blue skies all round. Gotta say you pick awesome songs to play during your vids as well Rob , well done . Looking forward to the next one.
Hehe thanks deb. I have a pretty good list that I chur through. Some songs I save for months / years before I use them like most the Jane 2.1 and Jane 3. Glad you enjoy them. Thanks!
Beautiful scenery, looking forward to the next adventure :)
Thank you Kath 😃
Love the geology info at the start, that was great. Did you do some of those animations yourself? I learnt something there, thanks
Awesome! I just used others animations that I sourced from UA-cam, I hope they don't mind!
@@Rob.Parsons all for the greater good of education! I'm sure they won't mind
Had a photo of it above our fireplace for years.
Oo nice!
Thanks Rob, excellent video.
We did the traverse first in December 1972 and second in December 1974. We were snowed in at High Moor both trips!
The heart would like to do a 50th anniversary walk, the head not so sure! Hmmm. Maybe. Inspirational.
Steve.
I think you should go for it mate, and upload a video when you're done! Cheers Steve!
Fantastic scenery Rob. I noticed a palm like plant growing up in the mountains mate, what the heck is that called? Must be bloody hard as nails growing up there.
Yeah its beautiful up there, mostly stunted vegetation as it snows up there a lot and quartzite makes pretty bad soil but those palm like plants are called Pandanis. Thanks for the comment
Nice one Rob. Looks like a lot of good track work has been done as far as Oberon. Pretty good effort getting there in a day when you're not 100%.
Thanks mate yeah good weather and some experience makes it pretty cruisy. Better not speak too soon I haven’t done the hard parts of the traverse yet 😂
Great stuff mate!
Thanks for showing an absolutely beautiful part of the world.
Inspirational probably sums it up for me.
All the best mate 👍👍
My pleasure geoff the wilderness is nothing but inspiring. How blessed we are to be able to enjoy it. Cheers
I climbed a mountain on NYE too and slept through the clickover into 2022! Oh well, its better being out in the wilderness than among the masses. Spectacular landscape, its on my bucket list. Do you use a gimbal stabilizer? Your shots over the vegetation were fab! Hope you're feeling better.
Thanks Terry what a great way to bring in the new year. No gimbal here, I use a selfie stick for those smooth low shots and shoot in slow mo. I might do a tutorial vid on how I do a lot of my shots, but then again im still learning so maybe not haha. cheers :-)
Another good video Rob well done, thanks for sharing.
Thanks Robin glad you enjoyed it mate best wishes for the new year. Thanks
Truly fasinating overview of what you are undertaking. Have you seen any thylacines yet? They are all over the place. The tracks on this hike are so well done.My suggestion for a sore throat is "fishermans friends" created for fisherman in more rugged situation than yourself; I have no financial interest in this product. The dirama of the Tassie's creation is very well done. Keep safe and well Rob. 23/02/2122
I wish I had seen one, I'll keep looking. Appreciate the tip!
Awesome video Rob! I did Lake Oberon and back with my father and brother and loved it! The views are amazing, and what a sight for sore eyes is Oberon as you come over that saddle at the top!
You didnt show much of the descent into Oberon, no doubt as you had no free hands to film, that descent was a tricky one!
We werent game enough to go swimming either haha
Thanks for sharing this, keep it up!
yeah its unbelievable coming over that saddle. what a stunning place. I did a swim at Cygnus it was a strategy to cool my legs they were on fire haha.
You are a walking machine to be able to get in and out in that time. It sure is an amazing location.
Haha thanks mate, too many Jane trips make these ranges look like ants nests.
Just wondering how much sugar you consume spiking energy levels
Amazing place to visit! Simply beautiful! What are the names of the two songs you use in this video?
Thank you! The songs are One Republic - Run and also Smith and Thell - Hotel Walls. Thanks for watching
@@Rob.Parsons thank you!
Do we need to register on Tasmania parks and wildlife service website even if we are doing the Lake Oberon alone?
I think its voluntary
Great vid once again Rob. Thanks for showing us parts of Tassie that most of us won’t ever get to👍🏼💪
Cheers onno!
Amazing scenery Rob 👌
Thanks for sharing, it was truly beautiful
My pleasure Barry thanks for the comment mate :-)
Rob! Thinking you or Levi...or both 🤣😂❤️
12 to be abandoned in Tasmanian Wilderness for new reality show.Casting is now open for an upcoming reality show where 12 people will be abandoned in the Tasmanian Wilderness.
Cheers lad I’m working on an audition!
Cool lil vid. Coincidentally at the start of this mid I was Mungindi a box of shapes distracted by a wedgie out the window at the same time you stopped to look at the wedgie
