- Vanessa Bayer (SNL, I Love That for You) joins us in the MBB studio to discuss using humor to cope with her cancer diagnosis as a teenager, her tenure as one of longest-running female cast members of Saturday Night Live, and her transcendental meditation practice. She opens up about her Make-A-Wish experience, landing SNL and the resiliency working on the show entails. Vanessa’s brother Jonah Bayer (writer, podcaster, musician) joins in virtually to discuss his current studies in a Clinical Mental Health Counseling program, what inspired him to enter into the mental health field, and why he’s interested in the mental health of creatives in particular. He opens up about his experience navigating Vanessa’s illness, his own battle with leukemia, and how he uses yoga to maintain his mental wellness. Vanessa and Jonah profess their deep love of Blossom, explain their working relationship as siblings, and consider the difficulties around getting started with any mental health treatment.

Vanessa is definitely an underrated comedian she deserves a lot more praise and fame
I loved Vanessa's portrayal as Evie, the emotional vampire in "What We Do in the Shadows" the TV series. It was really hilarious. I find her character and the character of Colin so hysterical and fascinating at the same time. It sort of touches on a mental health issue that some people struggle with, whether you are the energy vampire or are trying to get away from one. 😂

Beautiful episode. While I'm the wrong age to be a Blossom fan, both women are lovely, funny, smart and hamishe. The relationship between the sibs is golden as well. The three of them exemplify hard work, aka consistent practice. Love their minds, their hearts, their humor, their artistry, their tenacity. I am where I need to be. Thx, Breakdown.
Hey, I'm 68 and became a Blossom fan anyway. Watching it now, it's very much of its time, and one needs to adjust for not having been a young girl in the early 90s. Still, it was groundbreaking for its time, even for adults. And there was Ted Wass, whoa (to quote Joey Lawrence's character). Along with a number of parts and guest spots being filled by adult actors like Barnard Hughes and Melissa Manchester. Plus the catchy theme music done by Dr. John. I actually streamed the whole series about five years ago, when I wasn't feeling well for a week or so, and it was perfect. Just saying.
Okay, for this episode filled with Blossom nostalgia, I just have to say: *the tips frequently offered for mental health are fascinatingly close to the original Blossom theme song's lyrics, memorably sung by the great Dr. John. Which is to say: maybe this is (mostly) all we really need!* As a reminder:

I adore Vanessa and Jonah. I don't usually listen to or watch podcasts so late at night, but this episode was totally worth it. How Did We Get Weird gets me from VT to NH's North East Kingdom and back with a smile on my face the entire hour-long drive.
These are the women I find the most beautiful, attractive, and most interesting. I don’t get the attraction towards the cookie cutter Hollywood thing. Y’all are missing out

I watched this podcast and after Vanessa's raves about Blossom I've binged watched for several of the last 36 ish hours. I'm a little older than you Mayim and went back to college in the early 90s so I wasn't watching much TV when it was originally on. Great show!! 👍 love this podcast too!!
