Canon EOS R50 review: For content creators ready to step up from a smartphone

- Canon’s 24-megapixel EOS R50 is the company’s third APS-C camera to launch in the EOS R mount ecosystem, and it’s mighty for the size and price. Weighing just 375 grams and packing a built-in flash, it’s extremely portable so it’s great for travel, parties, street photography and more. At the same time, it can shoot images at up to 15 fps, outputting high-quality, skin-friendly photos. It’s capable for video as well, with 4K 30p supersampled from 6K, with 10-bit capability via HDR PQ. It doesn’t have all the latest AI features of other models, but it’s a great value at the $680 price point.

I’m happy to see your post on the M50 camera especially since you have the same lens, canon Ef 15-85mm lens. I have taken some photos since I just got this camera but I need to find a way to upload the photos in to my computer, I have been used to do that with a USB cable on my old M50 camera and I know there is the wireless way but I don’t know how to do it, I playing to spend some time and accomplish that. If you watch UA-cam reviews, they'll tend to focus on video because that's what's relevant to them. It reminds me of when I was buying a computer monitor and a lot of the UA-camr reviews referenced using the monitor for video editing, which is irrelevant for most people.
12800 iso is usable on this camera if you use a fast cinema lens, something like 24mm t1.05 looks good in low light on this camera and keeps noise at manageable levels to where its easy to remove in post.
I think the R50 looks great in white.

I just do not understand why the kit lens is no longer 18-55 and currently instead 18-45 i just don't get it. also canon actually do a 15-85mm lens that should be the actual kit lens I think.

It seems to be missing "miniature movie" mode. The m50 m2 has that feature.
The hot shoe is a deal breaker. Why canon?? Create a problem and you sell the solution by selling an adapter for hot shoe

Hi, I am a newbie.. can you help me to choose which lens I should buy? I want to buy the Canon R50, but I don't know which lens I should buy. I need to do manly photos to my family.. so for example to a person (bokeh effect) or to group of persons. Which one of these lens you recommend to me?
1) CANON RF-S 55-210MM F5-7.1 IS STM
2) Canon RF 50mm F1.8 STM
3) CANON RF 24MM F1.8 MACRO IS STM
4) Canon RF-S 18-45mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM

Get a 16mm OR the 28mm AND the 55 - 210
If you want the bokeh effect youll need low aperture, so the 50 mm would be the best option
For groups, hte 24 would be the best

Canon R-series cameras have a hot shoe problem. PetaPixel wrote a detailed article about it recently.
I hate to ask, but without reading the article, what is the problem? I am buying this camera Friday....I like to use a bigger external flash, and not the one on the camera...thanks alot.

Which camera is better, the Canon EOS R50 or Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra ?
I own the S23 Ultra and it takes some pretty sick pictures. I haven't even played around with expert raw mode either. The Camera Assist app that comes with it opens the door to a bunch of different camera options. The zoom option is pretty impressive too.
With a proper lens ? Hands down Canon !!

@@CrossfeetGaming As this review mentioned, the small size makes so many things worse that I wouldn't want to deal with or be constrained by. And the price seems a bit high to me as a result.
I'm too contemplating to upgrading to a 200D or better from my older (reliable and bullet proof and 14+ year old) 500D. The Mirror-less ones are too small / barely any proper lens / not proper lens stops / the electronic view finder is just not my thing. I like the older ones better. But I'm still thinking what to do, considering DSLRs are going away or they at least seem to at this point, they many come back ! fingers crossed.
Why Canon R&D team make 18-45mm??? (I own an R10). I am surprised to see the performance of R10 with 18-45mm kit lens. I never have a worse lens like this. This 18-45mm could be ranked as the worst kit lens in the century. The kit lens of M50 or ZV E10 or Z30 is much better than this 18-45mm f4.5 to 6.3. Canon could adopt the M50 lens which could make R50 better than its rivals as its rival has so many lens options. And RF-S system does not have a fast prime with IS.

How is the battery backup? How many shots in a single charge
Everyone forgets to mention if this camera can be operated while being charged through the USB cable. Why is it so hard to find this info? Absolutely useless!!!

A bargain for beginners
Then this camera is not made for you. This is clearly aimed at beginners, or first time camera buyers. It's not meant to be the best of the best. And it's meant to be small and light for people who want to travel with it.
