    Depression is something I'd thought I never get but it happened about 7 yrs ago because of my whole family feeling down as my father in law was dieing of cancer, worse time of my life, some people don't understand that you want to just shut everything and everyone out of your life in those very dark times, so I understand about Bill. One things for sure, I remember him being so funny on Springwatch and it was never the same when he left, stupid BBC!!

    I love Bill Oddie's wildlife programmes. I remember watching a birdwatching series he did with my grandparents, and I also enjoyed "Springwatch". He's a great presenter.

    I think, for me the magic in Bills comedy was his quest for fun with out harm to any person or animal. (excluding himself.)

    IMG - how long has it been since I last saw a Goodies episode on TV?? they were one of my most favourite British TV programes along with The Two Ronnies and the Bruce Forsyth show. Early to mid 1980s when I was watching these - 30 years ago now.

    It's difficult to decide whether or not he's a spoilsport for initially turning it down. On the one hand you could say he is, as he's shunning a compliment and the efforts of his family and friends. On the other hand, he has every right to decide what TV shows he wishes to be part of and This Is Your Life does take a liberty by effectively forcing its subject to take part.
    Awkward atmosphere when Tim & Graeme appear.

    It might have been difficult even for his family, to guage how he would feel about (and react to) being asked to do the show. Perhaps they felt it might be a good thing for him to do?
    Did you see the programme that covered Bil's journey to find out about his family history..."Who Do You Think You Are.....Bill Oddie", I think was the name of it. I was in tears.

    Bill oddie agreed to do a tour of Australia with Tim Brooke Taylor and Graeme garden. Graeme and Tim flew out to Australia where oddie said he would join them.
    On the first day graeme and Tim got a call to say that bill would not be joining them. They did the tour without him but Tim and Graeme did not forget how they were stood up by bill oddie. And it took a further 15 years before they agreed to work together again...
    For one off goodie special...

    @tenderheart17 It had crossed my mind that his reaction may have been infuenced to some degree by his mental health problems. I felt that the manner in which he refused was decent.
    It makes me question how aware or not the producers were of the way he'd react. I hope they didn't have any hint upon which they felt fit to exploit. Because it just seems a bit odd that nobody close to him didn't suspect he may not be happy to participate.
    Very uncorfortabe to see him forced into doing it.

      Michael Aspel: "He (Oddie) gave me a definite refusal. Disappointed, I bade him goodbye and said no hard feelings. Luckily for us, Bill's family told him they would kill him if he didn't appear, so he changed his mind."

    I think Bill's depression cast a grey shadow over all aspects of his life for many years, and affected the way he reacted not only to the general public, but to everyone around him including his family.
    I think one of the reasons why Bill became so heavily involved in bird-watching (besides his love of nature and the environment), is because it allowed him to escape from having to interract with other people.
    Did you find this difficult to watch? It made me very uncomfortable.

    • @raypsychodad
      @raypsychodad 4 роки тому +3

      A lot of people criticising bill either forget or don't know about his struggles with depression, or maybe lack the empathy. He's a genuinely nice man,but constantly fighting a battle many don't understand. Depression is an illness hugely misunderstood by people,because it's an invisible illness

    Is it not significant that Bill's initial reluctance came a year before the show's axing amongst rumours that "modern" celebrities were reluctant to take part in what they thought a corny concept (rumoured to include the Gallagher brothers)🎩

  • @verkaforever
    @verkaforever 13 років тому +2

    According to this is your life, there have only ever been three refusals, and Bill Oddie's was the latest. Author Richard Gordon refused in 1974, so maybe it's him you're thinking of. The only person to refuse and actually never appear though, was Danny Blanchflower.

  • @classicsportclassictiyl8547

    It really is astonishing to read some of these comments. How on earth does anybody have the right to rubbish a person they have not even met, or, even if met, have not got to know? It beggars belief! The really sad thing is that these same pillocks that express their 'informed' opinions so freely, are allowed to vote.

    Oddie - about as popular as a snake in a lucky dip. I can only think of one other I dislike more and that is Ben Elton , he's about as funny as toothache . Oddie though , he takes the biscuit , if you ever want to see him at his worst have a look at the time he did Celebrity Bargain Hunt , or was it Cash in the Attic , not sure , but anyway , all his items bombed and he was clearly not best pleased , l was laughing my bollocks off watching him trying to explain it . It was a classic .

      Yes, but you do realise, I hope, that both the programmes to which you refer are a 'fix.' A friend of mine went on one of these and was told exactly what to do. There was little left to chance in it. So any chagrin on the part of Oddie will also have come straight from the drama department. So please do not be taken in.
