its really insulting to me as a woman when media tries to portray a "strong woman" as just a woman acting like a man. instead of focusing on how real women in history have been strong, not by just acting like a man, but by being a strong feminine. being confident, caring, a good leader, just and fair. i mean just look at the statue of liberty. its of a woman for a reason. my childhood hero was Amelia Earheart, she never once tried to act as a man or tried to be "one of the guys" she didnt need to for her to live her dreams. im just sick of the shallow portrayals in movies and games. EDIT: i really love these comments in the replies! especially the ones giving amazing examples of strong women throughout history! love yall

When human's are literally biologically wired to have our attention drawn to signs health/reproductive fitness? I'd argue you're not of sound mind if you prefer ugly characters to attractive ones.
@nicr1159 for as long video game existed, female characters tends to be drawn/modeled as pretty/above average attractive and feminine in a way. I don't remember these whole uglification and masculiniazation of female character even happened before 2014 (2015-2016 imo was when this trend started to gain traction). The first game that i played where i think most of the female cast was not quite as attractive as it before, was Dragon Age Inquisition (2014) but even then most of the women in that game still has a lot of feminity in their character (except red jenny...she is the only one that i feels badly designed and stand as some sort of proto-veilguard character). Why do people keep championing feminism when they keep gradually erasing Feminine feature and feminine attitude in female character?
@nicr1159 I demand characters in video games be attractive or I'm not buying. Waifu or not. No one wants to play an ugly character, ever. (Unless it's an already known character like Gollum) I find it funny that you think the modern devs wouldn't touch waifu or gotcha game characters. To me, this comment feels like complaining a game has multiple environments. Games can have creative looks. If you don't like it, that's fine. However, it's sad that looks of a character make you abandon a game. If I did that, I would never play some really good games.

Ok, ok, with all due respect, Sifu is basically that, but minus the sci-fi. And, that game is pretty popular. Although I do wonder how many people actually picked the female character, though. I did, and I said what the fuck out loud, and I went back to the start and created a male character. There is also a fun fact where it's not that unpopular for players to mod the game so that the female character is replaced with Tifa. This game is an interesting case people should look at.

13:25 This is the biggest reason these studios and games fail. They want to appeal to a niche audience but continue to use big budgets and huge IPs. And they think all these people who are supporting them on social media will help support the game and make it a success. Video games are $70+, a Tweet is free. If those 73 thousand likes actually translated to sales they would have a point. Problem is the majority are probably woke activists trying to own the "incels/chuds" who don't actually care about this type of game either and won't bother playing it. Although now that I think about it these big budget games need millions of copies sold to even break even so 73 thousand sales would actually be abysmal.
While the appearance of these characters certainly draws attention, I think a big part of the problem is that characters like this often have insufferable personalities too. Being critical of other peoples' "offensiveness" while being more offensive themselves. Being jerks to friends, enemies and strangers alike as the default. Being unconvincing/inconsistent about their motives. Acting like a child despite the responsibilities trusted to them. Their personalities could even be more significant than their appearance when it comes to pushing away the actual gaming audience. If a female character with a muscular appearance acted like a "friendly gym bro" or a "stoic demon slayer" rather than an "insufferable child", I don't think it would face such a strong rejection. Similarly, a conventionally attractive woman could face rejection if they acted like a jerk as the default. But these two traits often go hand-in-hand, which thankfully makes it easier to avoid this media in the first place. (And it certainly doesn't help that the writing often glorifies the "insufferable child" simply because they're the main protagonist. If they sufficiently got called out on it, it might not be so bad but that never happens, while instead they get to call out the other characters on even the slightest opposition. Just terrible writing)
There is a division, but it's not a 50/50 split. It's 30 million copies vs. 1 million copies, and studios are on the wrong side of the split. It's obvious what true gamers want. And to the people who die on the 'characters don't matter' hill: do you think the person making the horrible decisions makes this one call, then mic-drops and quits? No, they hang around for the free avocado toast and to make sure 'the message' doesn't get buried under some kind of great story plot.
I think also that there is a difference between beautifying and sexualizing. Like I don't think we need to sexualize every female character but you can still make them beautiful/pretty/attractive. Or, at least, simply not ugly. Similar idea for men. I don't need a game to see ugly people. Could just leave my home.
Designing them to be even remotely attractive will open the door for the internet to sexualize and r34 them to high heaven. For whatever reason these new age developers fear that for some reason. Maybe the developers are jealous that attractive characters get more attention than themselves? I remember a Concord dev saying they deliberately designed the characters to overt the male gaze. Why do that for any sane reason. Like who do you think your game's audience was going to be? Insanity.
When and why did it become the norm for people to not be allowed to have preferences. ESPECIALLY for recreational activities/the ways people choose how they want to spend their money? I personally think buying expensive jewelry or shoes is stupid. That doesn't mean I think other people shouldn't be allowed to do it. I personally don't like overly sexualized characters with overly revealing outfits, but doesn't mean I think others shouldn't be able to want it. Anyone who thinks they should have a say in how another grown person spends their hard earned money or time, is straight up mental. Where is the tolerance from the "oh so tolerant"? Can anyone make it make sense. 😐
Puting Ciri next to that genderbent Krillin is a fucking insult wtf? Someone took the time to draw that meme too…I believe social media was a mistake 😐
I am hyped to play W4 as Ciri. She was trained to and built for the role. She has badassery in her own right and has been part of the story since day 1. Geralt picked right to pass the torch to her. That Krillin needs to be Namek'd again, because he needs his free Icecream Sundae.

Today I've seen some podcast with scientist(which was a woman btw) that was talking about how hierarchies of women work and also how bullying is a tool to enforce it. Much of it was against sexier or attractive women. Now I feel like people in the gaming world want us to compel to the same kind of thinking and surrender to the bullying.
I'd say it's more covert with attractive women and overt with unattractive women. As an unattractive woman people will be more overt about their bullying and distaste of my existence, men and women. But for my attractive friends I see a lot more of the "frenemy" type deal, where average women wanna be their friends to look 'cool' but hate them on the inside because they're jealous. Also I prefer to be attractive in game too 😂
What if I told you the reason we want attractive characters in video games is the same reason we want cool looking weapons, cool looking vehicles, badass looking guns, etc etc. What if someone made a racing game where all the cars were ugly? Who would play that shit? Why is wanting things or people that look good suddenly wrong?
It's like wrestling. Wrestling was awesome when the guys were larger-than-life characters. Having average-sized wimps come out in jeans and wifebeaters, whining and complaining, destroyed the whole thing. We don't want our entertainment to be like us; only the self-hating losers need that validation.
They always try to trivialize it like that guy saying gamers just want to fap to the female characters but I doubt anybody actually does that while playing. We just want to look at something attractive/cool and have fun as we play. Very simply.
When I was a kid rooting for Hulk Hogan, it was because he was big and strong and could beat the bad guys. I never thought, "I can't relate to the Hulkster; I wish a seven-year-old boy was champion." We want heroes to be awesome, not normal like us. This should be obvious.
As a woman, I want to play as a pretty girl with nice hair and cute outfits, if you give me a choice bewteen conservative or modern clothing, I'm gonna choose the more exposing option.
Every female lead is already masculine. Why make her ugly to boot? Make the physics realistic, make the weapons and environment realistic, make the story realistic; leave the fantasy in the story. You won't find a romance novel with an ugly manlet on the cover.
Its the characters personality that is off-putting to me. The way she looks is just doubling down. She was arrogant and threatened to fire her cooler looking agent because she was being reasonable 😂
Plot leak; TLDR - no space travel (it was a cutscene) - game described as open world uncharted with sci-fi elements - Jordan the protagonist is looking for her former gang leader - crashes on this planet her crew is on (EMP Wave caused by the atmosphere) - robots show up and aliens who are actually humans who can grow bug legs show up (??) they made the robots to invade earth - Luis is a bug lover kills all Jordan's old crew to lure the feds there - It's a set up to jack their EMP proof rides - You kill Luis and get to decide if you wanna side with the bug people or the space cops - you leave the planet roll credits
Dude everyone loved Ellie in Last of us 2, she wasn’t “hot” just a badass with a pretty face. Up to 17:36. So let me see if I have this right, as someone who is usually on this side of things, but is finding the reaction towards the Witcher 4 and ND's Intergalactic to be way too extreme and click-baity in its own right. We are critical of people for saying games like Stellar Blade shouldn't exist because Eve's character design is "disg-sting" and "unnat-ral" and "women don't want to keep seeing this kind of thing." On top of that, criticising this mindset for the fact that Eve is based upon a real model, therefore not unrealistic. Yet the criticisms our side are putting forward for why ND's Intergalactic is bad and shouldn't exist hinges on the idea that Jordan's character design is "disg-sting," "unnat-ral" and "men don't want to keep seeing this kind of thing," despite the fact that Jordan is based 1:1 on a real actress and no stereotypical ugl-fication even took place here. The actress is identifiable because the model the character is based on is so accurate. This is why you start to lose people's sympathies, because you are becoming the thing you hate and you don't even see it. All for clicks, which is also why the journos do what they do. It's tiresome. I come here and I watch these channels to get away from this kind of non-logic from the other side, but now we're just mirroring them. Great. Love that. As Asmon said, people can't say whether the game will be good because we haven't seen any gameplay yet, we haven't seen much of the story etc. In the same vein, we can't say the game will be bad either. We can be cautious, that the game will be bad based on certain red flags, and others can be optimistic the game will be good based on the points that appeal to them, but we can't know either way until we see more of the game. A short teaser isn't enough. Anyway, I'm stopping the video here and moving onto the next vid in my watch list, since this specific topic is becoming so wildly boring now. Everyone is saying the same NPC lines over and over and I'm done w/ it for now, at least until we actually have more information on the game. If it really is bad, I'll come back and laugh at it with you guys, but this being performatively and pre-emptively offended stuff is just tiresome. (Had to censor some words because YT is ducked and I have no clue which word triggered it so badly lmao.)

@nicr1159 Objective sales numbers and consumer sentiment seems to be against you. 'Sound mind' because they want to see attractive characters?

The kardashians have conditioned 90% of todays women to look like them, but if we put it in a game, all hell breaks loose?

All they know how to do is virtue signal, for example, rap culture is shown to have a much more negative effect on girl’s exposed to it and creates more self image issues and increased anxiety, but they don’t want to look bad for criticizing black culture
The women who work on video games will never look like the kardashians.

But they keep listening to the loud mouths, Those people don't play games! They are to busy being triggered by everything.
Same! And why wouldn’t they let us make our own character? I can spend hours in character creator sometimes. Some games it makes sense you can’t change the main character, but I see no reason why this game won’t allow it.
Agreed! Freedom is needed, options and all. If not? Make good characters that fit to players tastes or one that fits the universe.
Ugh same let me choose. I play DnD all the time. I don’t always want to play a pretty character. Sometimes I do want to explore my more masculine side and be the tough woman. Let me choose.
@@MeiseptemberxI said the same thing in a previous video about this. Why can't they take some of that inflated budget and put it toward character creation via player? It could be the most basic gender/feature/hair choices and ppl would be much happier. 😅
Same. I feel far more connected to a character that actually looks like a feminine woman. It's as if these people think a woman can't be strong, heroic, independent or brave unless she looks and acts just like a man. Its like they see beauty and femininity as a weakness. Its quite a sexist way of thinking.
Many of these people also can't seem to tell the difference between being attractive and being sexualized. A female character being attractive is not the same as a female character being sexualized. Beautiful women exist and many don't dress provocatively. Calling feminine women with curves unrealistic is just a form of body shaming.

You can masculinise my womens,, as long as they stay feminine in their character and don't try to make them something unique.
An example is comparing Karlach and Laezel.
One is much more manly in looks (Karlach is jacked) but has the some of the most princess like views in life.
The other (Leazel) is much closer to a typical woman's body type but acts like a typical guy soldier.

The problem with Alan Wake 2 is that he's a secondary character in his own game. He has less screentime than the race swapped (Saga Anderson was white but they changed her race) female character.

Yea and they race swapped a character so it’s bad when we do it(black to white) but it’s fine when they do it(white to black) WTF?
Honestly, I think Alan Wake 2, is hampered more by being an Epic Store exclusive on PC, than anything to do with the Alan Wake screen time or a black secondary protagonist. I did buy it on Epic, it's literally the only game I own on Epic Game Store. But I'm a Remedy-verse fan. I wasn't going to sit out on it. Most people aren't that deep into the Remedy-verse. @Martin-qb2mw I think there should always be an option especially in RPG games to customize your character, coz having both options just adds more playability and some people enjoy making ugly characters.
If no one cared about how their characters looked in a video game, there wouldn't be character customization options at the start of a video game.
Insanity.
Could just look in the mirror

Much of it was against sexier or attractive women. Now I feel like people in the gaming world want us to compel to the same kind of thinking and surrender to the bullying.
What podcast was this?
Al Bundy was right all along
I'd say it's more covert with attractive women and overt with unattractive women. As an unattractive woman people will be more overt about their bullying and distaste of my existence, men and women. But for my attractive friends I see a lot more of the "frenemy" type deal, where average women wanna be their friends to look 'cool' but hate them on the inside because they're jealous.

I want to play a character that either makes me want to be the character, or be in the character.
im already ugly IRL, why would i play ugly in-game too?
What's wrong with unhumanly attractive characters? If I want to play an ugly character I'll just play me in real life😂
If all the people who blame Asmon for woke games failing actually bought the game they'd probably at least make their money back.
