- This illegal driver is CRAZY and I can't get over the results of this shocking test. Have Golf Clubs REALLY Improved In The Last 20 YEARS, well this video is your answer. This is the Taylormade driver that changed golf forever...I tested this 23 year old driver and the results are SO strange and it is safe to say shocking! Taylormade have launched some unbelievable drivers over the past 25 years. We saw the TaylorMade Sim driver replaced by the TaylorMade Sim2 driver, whole new range of SIM2 golf clubs. The TaylorMade r7 quad driver was the first ever driver with adjustable weight technology, the Taylormade r9 driver, Taylormade r11 driver, Taylormade r15 driver, taylormade M1 driver, Taylormade M2 driver, Taylomade M3 driver, Taylormade M4 driver Taylormade M5 driver, Taylormade M6 driver, Taylormade Sim, could this 23 year old driver actually outperform the more recent drivers?! Does all this technology make any difference?!
2001 The R300 Series featured three separate drivers, the 300 Ti, 320 Ti and 360 Ti. These were the first TaylorMade drivers to meet or exceed the USGA COR limit..I test the 320 Ti!
So many golfers want to know what is the best driver on the market? what is the best driver, best driver ever, best taylormade driver, taylormade drivers, taylormade driver comparison, old vs new taylormade driver... could this be the best taylormade driver and we didn't even know it.

*Who remembers this driver? You may of even had it?! What do you think of the performance?*
Back in the 90’s I played a King Cobra driver! I’ve never had one of these! I was going to get a Burner mini driver, but they sold out!
This is crazy , I just dug one of the 360 heads 7.5 degree out of my old golf bag 3 days ago and dropped it off to have a shaft put in !! I've had it 20+ years and never played it , actually forgot about it !! It's basically a 20+ yr old new club lol
I think that would make a bargain 3 wood or driver off the deck on par 5’s.
I used the 300 for a fairway driver for a long time. Do one with the Nike Ignite. That was a good driver. And the Callaway Great Big Bertha
I still have mine, 300 ti if I remember correctly, but I don't use it anymore. But I did hit it ridiculously long, and it may be the best driver I have ever had. Had a very nice feeling with it. But the shaft loosened, and it didn't feel the same after I got it fixed.
My favorite drivers from the early 2000s were the Taylormade R580XD and Titleist 905R. I bet if you put a modern Tour shaft such as a Ventus Velocore in one these, they'd be within 5 yards of anything out today.
You need to try the Illegal Callaway E R C II driver, I used to have one just sold it last year !
They exceeded the limit 22 years ago but for the following 22 years clubs and balls have been getting longer? So if titanium could reach the limit, why use carbon fiber.... because they can charge more?
This is a great point!!!
Carbon fiber is lighter than titanium so it allows designers to move the weight (saved) to different areas of the clubhead to give it certain attributes for custom and /or production clubmaking.
My friend games one of these, I asked him if he wanted to try my stealth but hit further with this… now I know why, lol
Would love to see you hit my 1st real irons I ever gamed. Ram TourGrinds featherlites. Loved them even a hole on one!! Loved Rams then Kmart bought them out sad day in golf!!
It's because the USGA no longer use COR to measure drivers, they use CT now. If you can transfer more energy into the ball(COR) while staying within the CT limit using upgraded materials/technology you get more distance while staying within USGA limitations. TLDR: Materials matter, ALOT.
I recently threw about ten drivers I've bought over the last 25 years into a bag and took them to the range. I have some recent ones from the last five years, a Rogue, a Cobra and a few less than ten years old. I was surprised that the clear winner in terms of repeatable, long and straight shots was my Taylor-made R580. Probably the oldest of the bunch. I don't think drivers have improved much since then. Maybe they're a bit longer but I want a fairway finder.
Alex, great theme for the episode. Would love to see a test of the Callaway Hyper X driver. First new unused club I bought.
Great video, really enjoyed, interesting for sure..
Heard of this beast, hahaha great video mate.
I still have one in my shed. I cut down the shaft a little bit to make a mini driver out of it. It works about as well as a regular mini driver. If I can't seem to hit the regular driver I have it available.
Got 1 of those in my old stash of clubs, went like a rocket. The longest drive I ever hit up No4 at South Bradford GC was nearly 20 years ago with this club, it carried about 270/280y uphill and finished around 300/310y, I've never got within 30 yards of it since 😮
That's cause u r 20 yrs older now.
I played a 320 for 5 years. A great driver in it's day. Would work as a good mini driver just fine right now. If you find a nice one grab it and stick it in the bag. It won't disappoint !
Great video, I have a 360 Ti driver with a Fubuki shaft, bought it used with that shaft, I put it in the bag every now and then, a formidable driver. I wonder what yardages you'd get not using range balls? Thanks for a reviewing a blast from the past.
Hey Alex try the Callaway Big Bertha non conforming ERC II driver . I remember every body had one when it came out .
IIRC that club had a 0.86 COR, which was R&A, but not USGA legal. Some of them showed up in the States. In ‘03 Titleist moved from the 975 to the 983, which was the first series of drivers that were at the 0.83 limit. Between that and the relatively new ProV1, I picked up 25 yards pretty much overnight. They spun more than today’s stuff, otherwise you’d see the same yardages on center strikes. I’ve got a GCQ setup in my home, and you’ve got to go back to about 2012 to see any appreciable difference in distance, and even there it’s ~5 yards at 108 MPH. Every year I bring all the new stuff home from my club to demo it, and every year the manufacturers are proven to be liars. If you don’t care about money, go blow $640 on a QI10. Or you can find a 2016 M1 in great condition for $175 and get exactly the same performance.
Had a 360Ti as part of a Taylormade 360 set. Gave the set to a friend a couple of years ago, but had a go with the driver recently to show him it’s a cracking driver and he doesn’t yet need a more modern one.
I play a 9.5° Cleveland launcher 400cc, with an aldila NV 75g green shaft from 2002. I avg 317 total yds at 50 years old. It can shape shots with ease and cannot be replaced with anything else. I've tried at least 20 times.
Great review Alex. I love reviews of vintage clubs, especially drivers. Due to my age I’ve seen many advancements in drivers. However, Callaway was so significant in this area, I’d like to see you review one or better yet, all of the following. The Callaway Big Bertha Warbird Driver from 1995. The Callaway Great Big Bertha Driver from 1995 and the Callaway Biggest Big Bertha Driver from 1997. At the time these driver looked so massive. I still have these in my collection. Actually I have every Callaway Big Bertha Warbird wood released, Driver, Duece, 3,4,5,Heaven wood, Divine nine, and Eli wood.
I love my Warbirds too, I have 21 of them. A great many woods have been made that out perform and are perhaps more forgiving, but I love the look of that sole plate in my bag. You, sir have good taste 👍🏾
@@drewjames9167 The first time I saw the Callaway Big Bertha Warbird Driver I think I heard angels sing.
Love the warbirds and the Calloways from that era. Still play the Heaven wood
My primary driver is the 320ti 10.5 degree. For windy days I play a 300ti 9.5 degree.
I got tired of bowling ball sized drivers and went back to these a couple years ago and still get it out there 225-250 yds at 67 years old. Surprised they’d be illegal.
You should find the old Lynx Black Cat driver and try it out. I loved that driver so much back in the 90's!
late in the game but I saw in the R&A and USGA website and it says it's now legal! but great video!!!
I’d also like to see you review, what I think was the first true hybrid golf club. I think it was called the Adams Golf idea a1. Released in the mid 1990’s.
there were hybrids before Adams came on the scene the cobra baffler would be one of hte original, along with the stan thompson ginty
@@stevenbowers2429 you mean the Cobra laminated head with heavy railed sole? I do. It was viewed as a trouble wood as in getting out of trouble.
I’ve a set of Ping Zing 2 irons that no longer comply! The changes to rules on grooves in 2010 mean there’s loads of clubs that no longer comply. I wonder how many of the old drivers comply?
I still game the 360xd. Very similar bigger head. Amazing
Yes. Along with others ERC is one. Being 57 now there are so many that I've played and hit. Back in the HS and College days of the 80s you had to be center face or got punished. I still have my TM Tour spoon 13 degree fairway wood. Talk about SMALL. Drivers have evolved with size, shafts, faces allowing for various location hits. Center is still golden. My older burner bubble driver is about like a super strong 3 wood. Size and shaft length.
Still got my TM XR 3 which came out 2004 i think. 9.5 degrees, stiff shaft and its an absolute beast. Non-conforming but atill fun to hit in a casual round.
Love that!! I think I have to try this!!
I’ve had a lot of drivers but the longest one I ever used was the Ping Rapture. It had a metal matrix inner skeleton with a lightweight composite crown and was designed by a Cray Supercomputer. Maybe the forerunner of AI? It also had a powerful sound. I don’t know if the one I had was an anomaly, but I drove some greens I never came close to before or since. Also, it had the ping proprietary shaft and I loved that soft rubber stock grip. I would love to see you try it. New subscriber Barry Muller aka Goodmun
The Rapture 3 wood was a bullet too. Serious power from it
I've still got the Christie O'Connor Jnr driver I used in the 1990's but I upgraded to a driver I picked up at a cut price store which some random guy used to put together and it did a great job (Trident Dia Star). I had a break from golf for some years and when I returned all the heads had got bigger. At first I almost couldn't stop laughing it was such a strange experience. I have a Callaway XR which gives me as much distance now more or less as when I was about 17. lol I've never been anywhere near the numbers you were getting though but golf was always about control for me being significantly below 6ft. Great video. What was the loft on that? It looked about 11?
I have quite a nice story associated with that. I met a nice Irish lady and her husband at a coach station a while back. I had my clubs with me. She said "Do you play golf?". Her husband rolled his eyes 🙄😅 apparently this lovely lady used to caddy for Christie O'Connor JNR and she was his cousin I think. I told her I still have one of his signature Drivers and her eyes lit up. I might post a pic of it. It's still in great condition and it served me almost magically. 😊
I've got the TM XR-05. Very fun to hit.
The s90 was not 90 grams. It was 72 grams.
The 90 on the shaft was the recommended swing speed for that shaft. 80 was Regular, 70 was light, 100 was x-stiff.
I had the 460 of those and the irons when they first came out. 😱
I believe there was a Callaway E.R.C. Driver that was also illegal and a Cobra model that I don’t recall that was illegal.
Not sure how it would compare to modern drivers, but try the R540 XD TP. I had one and it went miles until it was banned.
I had a 320 about 15 years ago. It was a nice driver but ended up giving it to a friend.
The 300ti and 320ti are showing as conforming on the R&A site. Can’t see the 360ti or the R series you’re using. Perhaps you could check. The 320ti works very well as a mini driver with a bit off the shaft
How about the Callaway ERC II ?
That was the exact driver I had , brillant club
I had a Cobra Ti driver around 2003 went like a rocket.. I think it became illegal ..when new regs came in.
So...... a quick lesson about older taylormade shafts. Taylormade used to mark their shafts based on swing speed not weight. R80 was a regular shaft designed for 80mph to 90mph speeds. S90 was a stiff shaft designed for 90mph to 100mph and then they did an X100 for 100mph plus. Obviously fitting was limited back in early 2000's. A quick Google will tell you the shaft weight. I believe about 65/70g. Drivers like this, the R500 series and the Callaway ERC were the reason COR got limited. These were LEGAL until late 2000s early 2010s I believe. They wouldn't make a club that's illegal and sell it. It became illegal for competition use years after.
Have the exact same driver. Haven’t hit it for years - maybe I should!
I have that Driver in 7.5 loft! Just borrows through the wind
I would like to see you hit the old TM r7 460.
1620 EST (USA) ALEX CAN YOU TELL ME HOW HIGH TO TEE UP A R540 TAYLOR MADE AND THE WILSON RAM DRIVERS? THANKS...
I have the 300ti and 360ti in the garage. I also have a 3 wood and 5 wood. Perhaps I could send them to you if they are worth a whack. The 3 and 5 are minuscule :)
You should try the old Adams xtd
Remember it? I have one in my garage with some other old clubs, lol.
I have a TM ti 320 7° in stiff.. picked it up a few years ago on eBay.. interesting club to hit!
Nice!! Do you hit it well??
@@HowGoodGolf it’s a club I’ll take out on the range but wouldn’t put it into play .. I definitely need more loft!
titleist 905r was a monster when it came out
Please try the first M2, still a great driver...
How about testing a TSR 4 ..with a super light or Autoflex 405. shaft in it...?
I used to have a Taylor Made XR-03 and it went 40-50yds further than my Cobra Speed
Just proves Adam Scott’s argument about reducing the club head size instead of the ball. Premium on center of the club face hits. Get rid of these 460 cc where you can hit it anywhere on the face and swing as fast as you can. Reducing the ball hurts everyone .
Put it next to tve equivalent Titleist or csllaway from the same year and youll see the difference. Technology has changed the bar
Try a Yonex Nanospeed Cyberstar in 9 degree. I only sold in last year as the body cant swing it anymore but was long and straight
I still have an R580. I put a Fujikura Atmos shaft in it and play it from time to time. 😂
I still have a 320 driver , I have taken it out and used it to see the difference between old and new , I now have the ping 430 max..
That is a big change!!
The ball is going further because compared to the rivals clubs 22 years ago the trampoline face would have given it an advantage. However the drivers of today have such a large sweet spot that if you don’t hit the centre then you will not lose as much distance compared to the old drivers if 22 years ago. Also you had to be more accurate to hit the middle of the face as the driver heads were so much smaller compared to the enormous heads of the current models. So golfers of the past had to be , in my opinion, much better ball strikers than those of the present day as there was no forgiveness for off centre hits.
Love to see the ,
Wilson Killer Whale driver

Great content Alex 🏌🏿♂️
That’s a great idea 🙌🏼🙌🏼
I would like to see you hit a ping zing 2 . Do you think you can hit it the same distance as a new one
Only the ones with the red R where illegal. In fact they had 6 models in the market place
I had a R320Ti. Definitely the longest and loudest driver I have ever owned.
A truer comparison to might tell you why it was illegal would be to test it against the non-R version of the driver from the same era
I had a.r7 quad many moons ago, that was some driver
Oooo yes I remember this driver
In the interests of the game of golf, any driver bigger than 310cc and longer than 44" should be made illegal.
I had a 360t great driver not sure it would compare my new ping driver
Nice Keith!!
Oh Alex, before I forget again...more or less, what's the distance difference between using range balls and regular balls. My local driving range recently gone under new management and are only using range balls now, where previously it was a mix but mostly lost balls got used at the range.
range balls are thick surlyn blend covers with extra paint over low quality rubber, they vary greatly in material consistency which leads to lower ball speed and different spin rates than premium balls. they can be up to 40 yds shorter with a driver depending on how low quality the range balls are, some clubs buy higher quality range balls. srixon limited flight range balls are typically about 10% shorter than reg srixon, looks like that nay be what he is using
@@Tin5674 thanks so much mate...much appreciated
Try the cobra long Tom with a blackberry shaft
Oooo this is a good idea!!!
Titanium gets hotter when it approaches failure which would make it illegal. Or maybe the CT time is diff from cor
Get an aftermarket shaft in it
Hey Alex how about the first M1a Taylor made driver
Oooo what a great idea this is Jeff!!!
I had a 975j that was a rocket probably going to get another one since mini drivers ar super cool now
Still have my 975D 9.5 with a DG s300 steel shaft playing 43.5" and almost mint 975J 9.5 with a OG Diamana Whiteboard 73X at 44.5". Both of them are still amazing drivers.
Also, still have my 983K 9.5 with a Fujikura Pro 95 X at 44.5". Probably the longest driver I have hit when catch it.
@@benjaminberan7645 got a 905 t 9.5 coming
I had one of these and put a Graffaloy shaft on it. One of the best drivers I've ever owned. Three hundred and straight all say long. No exaggeration! It was a 300
The Biggest Big Bertha. It was the biggest, fattest driver when I was a kid. I bought it and was so proud, but the crap didn't work. I have never hated a driver that I loved so much before the purchase.
I would love you to hit the nike pro combo irons and how hard are they for a mid handicap golfers
Ooooo this is a great idea!!!!
@@HowGoodGolf thanks mate
I have a full set of them If you want me to send them to you
@@HowGoodGolf I have a full set of clubs if you want me to send them to you
How about trying the G400 ping
YOU WERE ALSO USING RANGE BALLS
Callaway ERC
Didn't Cobra also release a driver which became illegal?
Maybe they did… might be worth a try
Alex can you try out the Callaway FTI driver 9 degree, It seems to have a fast face also and a square head
interesting
Where the ERC legal drivers?
I have one hanging in my showroom, never hit it
Love it!!! Is it brand new still??
I have a 3 wood that looks exactly like that.
Do you still use it??
@@HowGoodGolf yes I do
It's a Mini.
its illegal @4:40 yw
another illegal driver fromyears ago. the original Callaway ERC
