  • Dragon Ball Dissection continues! Vegeta is gone, and the story gets a chance to breathe. Unfortunately, that just means things start getting confusing. Why can Piccolo do a dance nobody else can do? How many wishes do the Dragon Balls grant anyway? Can I put together a Bingo card of DBD tropes? Find out now!

As you may or may not know, the powers that be have taken issue with my using Dragon Ball music in the opening. I suppose that's certainly their right. As a result, I have made the difficult choice to replace the opening music in most of The Boo Arc videos with a new, UA-cam-friendly piece. I hope you like it. As a compromise, I have retained the original music in a few select Boo Arc videos scattered across the arc. For those who miss the original, follow this link to the opening as I uploaded it in 2020. Thanks so much for your support!

What's more confusing is the way the wish is worded in the first place. What they want is to bring back all those killed by Vegeta at the tournament and I suppose anyone else Bulma and Yamcha assume Vegeta may have killed that day. So they just wish to bring back all those killed by Vegeta. But Yamcha specifically asks to bring back anyone who died that day, barring evil people. From Toriyama's POV, this is done to revive Kibto who would then save Kaioshin and Gohan. Makes sense. But in-story, there's no reason why Yamcha is phrasing the wish in such a specific way, aside from maybe, for good measure, he wants to do save any other innocent people who died that day due to other circumstance.
Of course, that doesn't really excuse the obvious plot hole of everyone being convinced Gohan is dead despite the fact they just used the Dragon Balls. I guess, maybe, none of the characters, like some fans, put the dots together? Or I guess, since they could still not sense Gohan's power, they assumed he must still be dead and the wish didn't include them, but that would make no sense either, since Yamcha asked for everyone to be brought back.

Perhaps goku meant piccolo could stay and supervise the boys as they practiced the fusion. The dance itself is simple as is the concept of matching your ki, but in practice it’s obviously far harder, so I don’t think piccolo could have taught goten and trunks any more than Goku had already taught them during the short time he was on earth. Piccolo in this instance seems more like a study hall proctor than a teacher

    • @heatth1474
      @heatth1474 3 роки тому +41

Yeah, that is what I figured. There are two steps to learning the fusion technique: learning steps of the dance itself and being able to perform it correctly. Goku can teach Piccolo (and probably Gohan and Vegeta also) in half a day, but the whole practice to be able to do without mistakes is another matter.

I don’t think it’s the dance. At least in the anime it was stated that their energy, even breathing and I’m pretty sure thoughts had to be perfectly in sync. I always assumed that took the most time because obviously it would, and it’s what allowed them to fuse at all with the dance even when it was imperfect. Or to put it in other words, matched breathing, thoughts, and energy allowed a fusion in the first place while how well the dance was performed determined how strong the fusion would be.

Alternate explanation for the Fusion Dance debacle: Goku is an ADHD demigod and Vegeta would never bother learning the dance as he is in the Buu arc. Gohan is the only one studious and attentive enough to try, but Goku would have to greatly increase his son's power level to match his, which would take time (see the HBT before Cell.
Goku in his rare moment of combat genious recognizes that Piccolo is attentive enough and serious enough a trainer to not only pick up the basics of the dance, but also to be able to discipline Goten and Trunks through the steps while also working out the theoretical energy balancing problem for them, which Goku himself is too scatterbrained to do within a short timeframe.

    • @daymianhogue1634
      @daymianhogue1634 3 роки тому +15

This is what I'd always thought in the past; glad to see someone else thinks similarly.
BUT... Not sure if anime filler shortly after this; or actual canon manga material after this... Rather debunks that theory; Because it's explained even Goten and Trunks aren't quite similar enough in ki/power level; But they didn't have to train Goten to his level, they just tell Trunks to hold back a bit of his power and it works fine. If Trunks can just suppress his power down to Goten's level? There is no reason the prodigy learning Kamehameha in an instant; Goku wouldn't have been able to suppress himself to Gohan's level.
At this point more realistically; Goku just really didn't wanna fuse with anyone as shown with the way he later on denies fusing against Kid Buu. Nothing short of Buutenks/Buuhan really forced him to fuse personally as he thought with SSJ3 he could even just beat Fat Buu on his own as he states later.
Another realistic option: Goku doesn't actually wanna help take down Buu personally to toughen up the next generation: Which makes sense thematically. It's also why he claims he didn't use SSJ3 until he had to.

Granted you could argue Goku is Theoretically taller than Vegeta and they manage to do the fusion dance in several pieces of media (including the one tentatively "canon" appearance in the recent Broly movie). Of course, Vegeta has slowly been gaining height throughout the series and is pretty commonly depicted as tall as Goku now. (and that really bugs me).

Here's a proposed solution to the Fusion Paradox: The Fusion Dance is actually a lot easier to do than Goku makes it sound. The dance moves are indeed the most difficult part of the fusion. Rather, the reason it took Goku so long to master it is because ... he's Goku. He's a master of fighting, but a complete dunce at literally everything else. Dancing is as foreign a concept to him as math. This is evidenced in the movie "Fusion Reborn" (or "The Rebirth of Fusion!! Goku and Vegeta" in Japan). Whereas Goku had to practice for an entire week to master the moves, Vegeta is able to master the technique on his second try after only a few minutes, and he did so over his egregious protests of how stupid the dance made him look, so he probably wasn't even giving it his all.

Vegeta and Goku are a lot closer in level, so it was relatively simple. In fact you could also say that's why he scored the lowest on the punching machine, he's had a lot of practice at lowering his strength from his Fusion Dance training. It was never a factor of it being difficult to learn, but Goku's lack of viable partners made it harder for him to learn.

Doing the dance in synchronization was probably the most difficult part after all, and considering that characters other than Gokū tend to learn faster than him, it wouldn’t surprise me that Gokū just assumed Gohan and Vegeta are as slow as him.
Later on, Gokū even suggested the Metamorian Fusion with Gohan and Vegeta on two different occasions. The only objections being that Boo wouldn’t let Gokū and Gohan have the time to fuse (since he’s already familiar with it) or because Vegeta hated the dance. So, it doesn’t seem to be a big time problem after all.

Oh, and by the way, Vegeta wouldn't have been revived regardless of he was deemed a really bad guy, because Shenron already revived him back in the Freeza arc.

Goten and Trunks need to achieve that ideal with absolute precision through constant practice and, because they're kids, they need a strict adult supervising them. I don't see the problem.
I don't know if I'd be going on a tangent by trying to force a real life parallel into this but: If I describe the characteristics of a perfect Circle, you would understand what I mean even if you aren't able to draw one yourself. Kami could easily learn the 5-second dance within a few hours if he had to, and then oversee the kids try the most difficult part of fusion: matching Ki with your partner. Right place, right time. Could Popo have done the same thing? If he was present when Goku showed the dance, it could have been reasoned Tenshinhan knew the dance after seeing it once. So being able to help Piccolo train the children.
Of course, you could maybe say Tenshinhan only saw a dance and not the technique itself (although, the only extra thing seems to be an automatic event where both participants fuse). And we also saw Tenshinhan train the Mafuba after seeing it once, so maybe he booster when he claimen to be able to adapt an technique after seeing it once, and an attack like the Kamehameha is just super easy. Although, maybe his Mafuba training was only learning to aim the Mafuba into a rice cooker...
Man, I'm busy so long now, what was I trying to say again? O yeah, it possibly could be useful to have Tenshinhan in this scene.

I always just assumed that Piccolo would be superior to the Saiyans in mastering what seems like a “magic” based, matter bending ability, particularly being whole again with Kami, and that he and Kami together, each having been efficient martial arts and ki teachers, would exceed Goku in teaching ability, who... as far as we can tell, trained together with Gohan so they could each get stronger without reaching him much other than the Kamehameha, and has never really taught anyone anything important at that point.

I've always felt bad for the people who died due to Goku & Friends being careless and were NOT resurrected by the Dragon Balls ever. Or even those who died, were resurrected the first time, only to die yet AGAIN in the next big bad attack, and as we know, Earth's Dragon Balls can't resurrect the same person twice, so that means those people were never resurrected at all. How is that fair to them, when Goku & Friends have access to now THREE separate sets of Dragon Balls and use them to their own convenience?

I thiiiiiink I get the mindset the Piccolo dance thing was being written from, because I remember being taken along by it when I first watched the show. Like, obviously in real life, learning something to the level you can teach it to others takes much longer than just learning to do it yourself...but in the context of a fantasy magical technique, the flashiness of the actual fusion makes it seem like, oh, well, these kids are going to actually DO the magical fusing, that's a much bigger deal than Piccolo just learning to imitate the pose to instruct them...it doesn't actually make sense, but it's easy for me to see how it's the mindset you'd slip into if you didn't think too hard about it.

One thing I enjoy about this arc is the approach the heroes have taken to the civilian death toll. Basically, they aren't going to do anything to stop Buu from killing everyone on Earth, because realistically they cannot. They have to wait, prepare and plan on how to defeat Buu first. Then they can just revive everyone with the Dragon Balls. They're still essential to the story because none of the heroes plans can work without the Dragon Balls to fall back on when the time comes. I think this direction makes the most effective use of what the Dragon Balls have effectively become, i.e. the reset button to fix everything. It's interesting to see how this informs the characters actions.
When Evil Buu arrives at the Lookout, Piccolo offers to let him the rest of the humans to buy time. It's a questionable, though desperate move by Piccolo, but it makes sense because he knows they can brought back, so stopping Buu is the priority. Or when Goku tries to buy time to so they can get the Dragon Radar, but then Buu would still be free to destroy West City. So long as they defeat Buu and keep enough people alive to use the Dragon Balls, it doesn't really matter how much damage Buu can do. At this point, we know the Dragon Balls can fix pretty much anything, but it only works so long as the threat is stopped. The Dragon Balls are no longer any kind of challenge for the heroes, they are just a utility like the Senzu bean. I do like the way they become an significant part of the heroes own strategy

everyone else: talking about dragon ball rules and The Fusion Paradox
me: cooking up a whole essay about how annoying I find it that Toriyama decided that Piccolo did NOT in fact kill Babidi before
Like...seriously, I don't understand why Toriyama does this. Or to be more specific, I don't understand why he decided to bring Babidi's story to a pretty clear and natural end-point only to bring him back almost immediately afterwards. I appreciate that, as a whole, DBD looks at the series In The Moment rather than Jumping Ahead, because that's how audiences originally experienced the series and thus directly informed how it was being written. But even taken from that perspective, it doesn't make a ton of Narrative Sense to bring Babidi back. Never mind that we can already tell The Monster is going to turn on its Master here (a well-worn trope in Fiction PERIOD and at this point in "Dragon Ball" SPECIFICALLY), Babidi's already fulfilled the most important possible role he could have in the story: Majin Buu has been released. There is literally nothing else he can do that's going to be more important than that. Bringing him back now when he's both fulfilled his function AND been disposed of just feels weirdly redundant (not to mention it strips Piccolo of, like, the ONE Active Accomplishment he has for this entire arc).
And if you DO start taking the long view, it's not as if anything else that's going to happen from this point forward requires him to be there. Given how he consistently uses the threat of re-sealing Buu to keep him in line, the intent seems to be for Babidi to be The Leash that keeps Buu from running wild and just destroying the whole universe, but a.) most of what he and Buu get up to from here on in is still just Destroying Stuff At A Massive Scale, so that doesn't feel like a Dramatically Satisfying rationale
    and
b.) the story's going to eventually get around to saying the OPPOSITE, that WITHOUT Babidi to boss him around Buu can in fact be BENEVOLENT. Or at least LESS destructive.
All of which becomes even worse when you realize that Buu's personality thus far is still undefined enough that he could just as easily go either way REGARDLESS of Babidi's influence on him and it would still feel decently believable/consistent with what we know of the character at this point. AND EVEN *THEN*, when Babidi DOES in fact die (which I'd call a spoiler, but c'mon; the story's already laid the groundwork good 'n' thick even here), it'll be almost immediately BEFORE he could in fact have a Dramatically Meaningful Impact on the story again...but that much, at least, is a bridge we can cross when we get there.
Point is? I wish Toriyama had either let Babidi stay dead here, or else had a better, more compelling REASON for bringing him back to life.

I think the fusion learning part should be understood like this:
-You can learn the basics fairly quickly, the dance, the rules...
-But to make it works it will take a lot of practice, about a week to get the dance perfectly right.
So Goku says there is no time for him to fuse with anyone because it's too long to master the dance, but it's ok to pass the basic knowledge to Piccolo.
EDIT: oh you actually tackled that, spoke too soon.

To be honest. I really don’t care about the time it takes for Piccolo to learn the Fusion technique at all, since I always assume that he is a fighter prodigy so he might have been able to learn the technique in a short amount of time. And that it’s difficult for Trunks and Goten since they are new to this sort of thing.
But I’m really glad that you talked about the Dragon 2 to 3 wish thing that always confused me.
