The Complexity of Majin Boo - Dragon Ball Dissection: The Majin Boo Arc Part 20!

  • Majin Boo's temper tantrum becomes existential. Not only does he create a new Boo, that Boo eats the first Boo to become yet another Boo. On one hand, this puts the "transforming villain" trope back into action. But could it be that this character-motivated transformation gives us a better story than Freeza and Cell?

As you may or may not know, the powers that be have taken issue with my using Dragon Ball music in the opening. I suppose that's certainly their right. As a result, I have made the difficult choice to replace the opening music in most of The Boo Arc videos with a new, UA-cam-friendly piece. I hope you like it. As a compromise, I have retained the original music in a few select Boo Arc videos scattered across the arc. For those who miss the original, follow this link to the opening as I uploaded it in 2020. Thanks so much for your support!

Trunks being the leader of the two & Goten being so passive and just going with everything Trunks tells him reminds me of how Bulma and Goku’s relationship was in the first arc of Dragonball. Toriyama doubtfully did that on purpose but to me it’s a nice callback to the first arc in the final arc

At the very least shows character consistency to an extent. Goten is clearly sort of a mini-goku but more childish. Trunks is a mini Bulma with some "saiyan traits". It's the repetition of personalities that creates the repetition of the dynamic but it creates the effect of nostalgia... to better result, i'd believe.

the trunks and goten pairing to me has a similar vibe to the iconic Calvin & Hobbes duo. With Trunks embodying the assertive and machiavellian Calvin, and Goten embodying the more passive and analytical Hobbes.

Buu really feels like a character that's lesser than the sum of his parts. Each main form of Buu has a lot of cool character traits going for them to work well as villains, but they're all so separated from each other that I have trouble thinking of Buu as one coherent antagonist.

In my opinion, Super Buu is the primary antagonist of the Buu arc, while Fat Buu is more like a plot device.

Super Buu shines as a character when he retains elements of comedy mixed with magic that the Buu saga has a ton of (turning Chi-Chi into an egg, drinking a soda while waiting for Gotenks to resume fighting, not even knowing what an hour is, etc). When the story needs him to be another rendition of Frieza/Cell is where he’s replaced as a character.

The xenomorph form making Freeza more intelligent and allowing him to use very complex ki attacks, the ox form being very strong, ect. That would remove the idea of an "ultimate" form, and instead Freeza is demonstrating how sheer flexibility lets him exploit the weak points of his enemies.

I’d have liked that for all his earlier forms. I think it works for the final form to be superior, but then that he has trouble controlling the power of it and maintaining it… also creating a higher energy drain. Like his 100% power, but applied to the form itself. This would explain why he holds off on using it right away.

I feel like that is the case! At least to a certain extent. Obviously his first and fourth forms are the weakest and strongest, but he seems much more physical and brutal in 2nd, and his 3rd form (the little we saw of it) did come across as much more nimble plus it's where he unleashed his needle flurry ki blasts and nearly killed Piccolo.
I do agree forms are best when portrayed as side-grades with unique abilities rather than straight up power levels. It would've been great to have Frieza cycle through all his forms again in Ressurection F and the Tournament of Power as the situations called for it. (Third form vs Dyspo anyone??)

"Super" Buu feels more akin to what might have emerged from the cocoon had Toriyama had the wherewithal to realise not everyone shares his particular sense of humour. Whilst I do ultimately prefer the Majin Buu we got, this revised Buu at least retains some of the interesting, anarchic traits of his template. Things like a fixation on sweets and violent mood swings, only with this Buu it all comes through the prism of a complete brute as opposed to a child. He's still got that sense of "innocence" to a point.
He's also the last instance this arc has of anything halfway decent. Every revision made to Buu hereafter just lessens him.

I never understood the dislike for Piccolo's role in this arc. In my opinion his role in the Frieza and Cell arc was kinda infuriating. He gets a power up becomes the strongest for one fight and then gets instantly outclassed by the same villain he dominated before. It always felt like the story was saying "Know your place Piccolo." At least in this arc Toriyama didn't come up with a way to give Piccolo a power up beat Fat Buu then lose to Super Buu a day later and instead gave Piccolo a story relevant role that kinda continues his role from the Saiyan arc.

It more or less has to do with Piccolo not in an active fighting role in this arc. After re-reading this arc a while back, I enjoyed Piccolo taking on the mentor role throughout this part of the arc. He works as the straight man to the wildly inept Gotenks, and their chemistry together makes for my favorite scenes in this arc, but a small part of me does wish he got to have a fight, because I like the way Toriyama drew Piccolo's fight choreography.
Either way Piccolo is amazing, and a lot of the people don't like his role in the Boo arc because he's not an active fighter and being badass, while hating how he's basically Gotenks' babysitter, and has become the straight man in their comedy routine.

9:49 I don’t think the idea is that Buu could not sense energy before now, more so that he didn’t really think about doing it. You said before that Buu was just a creature of pure Id. Evil Buu(or Super Buu or whatever) is still mostly Id, but now he has some Ego to go with it. He takes more practical steps to get what he wants.
Remember, he can’t actually sense Gotenks at the Lookout because he’s not there. Evil Buu can just sense “powerful people” at the Lookout, so he concludes that the challenger is hiding there. He uses a simple, but plausible logic to achieve his goals. Which is funny, because there’s no indication that Evil Buu is any *smarter* than what he was before, he just thinks a little differently.
When he kills the people of Earth, it never feels like he was trying to out smart Piccolo who is stalling for time. Evil Buu thinks that if he kills everyone on Earth as fast as possible, he can fight sooner. Thus, he kills everyone on Earth at once. It’s fun dynamic because you have Piccolo’s cunning up against Evil Buu’s unpredictable simple mindedness.

9 year watcher since release of the 21st Budokai Part 1 video, first time commenter. The part about Chi Chi's death and how not even the non-combatants aren't safe is part of the reason for me why I feel the Boo arc was the best place to end Dragon Ball. Even if I feel the previous 3 arcs are better, they still feel like "just another fight" in these peoples' lives: fighters against other fighters and the other people who get caught up in it and killed are mostly unnamed bystanders who we'll never see again even if they're revived.
But here it's those like Bulma and Oolong who've been around from the beginning. They're characters who simply don't die, the fight never reaches them. I remember reading those parts in episode summaries back when the UK was waiting for the Boo arc to start on TV and even reading that they get killed just felt incredibly wrong. After that and the Earth being destroyed later there's nowhere to go for a new villain that would feel effective. The "safe" characters have been killed and the villain has accomplished the ultimate threat the last 3 villains have made but failed to do by destroying the planet. You just can't really do that again and have anywhere near the same impact.
I mean, they've tried to increase the threat in the revival era by going "nonono it's the entire UNIVERSE and the afterlife with it too", but to me it's just like, "who cares? I've seen the safe characters die and the planet go with it once before", expanding into just a vague "everything" doesn't really work because Earth and the characters on it is almost the "everything" that I care about in this series. To be fair, GT tried by tying it in with Piccolo's permanent death and even Super's retelling of 'F' improved that bit in the film by showing some of victims getting caught in the planet's explosion but the impact is one again lessened because I've seen them all die before.

Also Super Buu is a hell of a lot more terrifying than I remember, he was literally able to make “killing the population” their only option for survival. That ALONE is powerful!
Edit: I also always saw Super Buu's height as a way of showing how he’s above them all. Particularly in power, he’s gotten so much stronger than them all to the point where everyone is just an inferiority to him and what he’s doing now *shows* that.

Personally, I think Chi-Chi's death is really well done. She stands her ground and proves that she is the mother she always said she was. She is so out of her depth and yet she tries her hardest to confront the threat. Boo coming to the "safe" non combatants at the lookout was always going to lead to their eventual deaths but seeing it happen to Goku's wife first feels different because of how adjacent she is to the main characters (Goku and Gohan respectively) and it really creates a sense of "who's next?". I think this is only really replicated in the Battle of Gods movie when the God of Destruction, a person who can effectively defeat Super Saiyan 3 Goku shows up at a party with all of our heroes. It makes the characters and by extension the viewer feel unsafe. Especially in Battle of Gods because they don't quite know what they've gotten themselves into.

The Majin Boo Arc has a lot of the best moments of the series in isolation, but they're very messily put together as Toriyama was either trying to figure out what direction to take the story or was going back to his old ways he's been set in for so long. It's a shame because the chapters involving Majin Boo and Mr. Satan really play to Toriyama's strengths as a writer and it would have been better to stick with that instead of falling back on tired old tropes.

Oh cool, so we've reached the point where this story just breaks down completely for me. Like...I agree with Fusion that the tension they're able to get out of the Reset Terms that this new ("Super") Buu presents is Generally Good, but you can also FEEL the story getting shakier and shakier the longer it tries to keep that tension going, because the further into it we go the less the Character Stuff that makes it work at the outset really matters (indeed, Piccolo's attempt to use Videl to pacify Buu strikes me as fairly UNconvincing, because it requires us to accept that the mercurial Buu would not only care about that, but that he'd take Piccolo at his word that she is who he says she is). It's also hard to miss how this new Buu relates so thinly to the original; with Freeza and Cell, they remained fundamentally the same being throughout their transformations, regardless of how well you might've liked who that being was as a Character. New Buu is an almost COMPLETE reset, and one that happens so abruptly that it makes it VERY hard for me to invest in the character long-term because I have no reason to believe he won't just get arbitrarily reset AGAIN before this is all over (and indeed that is exactly what happens twice, arguably thrice). We still have juuuuust enough going on here that works, as Fusion says Piccolo's new role here is dynamic and engaging and the Genocide Blaster moment really is a great one, but this is also basically the last point at which I have ANYTHING nice to say about the Buu Saga.

I always considered him "The end of the fun" but he's just as silly, elastic and creatively malicious as Fat Buu was. Except he's WAY scarrier. Something about his sheer presence send chills down my spine. I'd argue he does a better job of copying Frieza than Cell does in that regard. Because at the end of the day, Buu isn't...that scary looking. (Neither is Frieza) but the presence he commands and the way his presence affects the people around him really brings that tension. When you see him looking at that hour glass you're scared because at any moment he could decide not to heed it and kill everyone there, like he promised. He's moody and impulsive and has enough power to get away with it. And yet he still hasn't quite lost that childish silly side of him. He took what Buu did and turned it even more nightmarish. I don't necessarily think it's a narrative problem that Frieza chooses not to transform until he absolutely HAS to. It's like Goku being too relaxed during fights and leaving himself open to attack. It's an obvious character flaw, in Frieza's case it's Pride. He doesn't feel he SHOULD have to exert himself so he holds back until he needs to get serious. There's also the case that once he hits 100% his stamina drains extremely quickly.
For all we know (and consider that Dragonball massively slows down the fights which often take place over the course of less than an hour - The ToP was under an hour in-universe) all his transformations have a power drain which only gets worse the more of his full power he taps into. For that reason his excuse for not transforming is twofold: Pride, and Practicality. Sure he can blow someone away with his full power, but then he is the Lord of the Universe. He really shouldn't have to exert himself. Pride.
That said I love your read and interpretation into why 'Evil Buu' shows up and the metaphor that violence urges and murderous desire can consume a person. In Buu's case his rage and violence literally eats him alive. I doubt even Toriyama thought of it that deeply and just used it as a way to raise the stakes.
As for Cell, you could argue it's a metaphor for *"be careful what you wish for"* , all Cell wanted was to reach perfection. He never planned on what he'd do once he became perfect. It's like *"Where do I go from here?"* , alot of us have dreams we want to achieve - but don't plan what to do once we reach them. Retirement is a goal many of us strive for all our working lives...But are left aimless and without goals once we DO retire.

I think the "problem" with Frieza is less that his pride holds him back from just getting the fight over with, but rather that it does so across multiple transformations. Frieza has not one, not two, but three transformations, and even after that his final full power buff could arguably qualify as a forth transformation.
It's a formula that gets stale when every time the heroes think they maybe have a chance, Frieza just whips out a new form, and it's a repetitiveness made all the worse because it's never even a shocking revelation. Frieze is constantly taunting the heroes about how much he's holding back. He's pretty much the granddaddy of every, _"This isn't even my final form meme."_

That’s good for keeping other characters relevant, but eventually it devolves into energy attacks and pretty much nothing else matters aside from your bloodline and skill at 1 type of combat.

Piccolo is my favorite DB character and I enjoyed Piccolo's role and how he keeps being the smartest person in the room. But I think there are a few things why I'm not 100% satisfied
    1) He's useful NOW, but soon everyone will die except for major fighters and him, and Piccolo will just hang around like a dummy. In all previous arcs and many movies, he gets to help from the side, one of my favorite moments being a single kick to Frieza, that allowed Goku to charge a spirit bomb.
He was already robbed from fighting Supreme Kai and Dabura, third time it's hard to ignore how sidelined he gets from fighting. A little "Tien slows down Cell" type of moment would help a lot. Frankly, he could just die earlier.
    2) I understand that the kids/Piccolo pairing is comedic, but considering the stakes, I just keep getting frustrated with two twerps (like you said, Goten watched his mother die, then he will goof) and I feel bad for Piccolo for being forced to endure it. It stark contrast to "beating Gohan into shape" days.
    3) This leads me to the fact that I don't like Trunks and Goten as "saviors". They were fine in the tournament when stakes were low, now that the world is on the line, I have no patience for their antics, the same way you don't have patience for Vegeta. (Both Fathers dead? Time to act like a stupid kid). So on a subconscious level I despise that Goku/Vegeta/Gohan are gone and Piccolo finally has the opportunity to take main stage... and it goes to those brats.
I know the arc was about the "next generation" but the concept will be abandoned anyway, plus those brats don't feel like they deserve to take Goku's mantle.
    4) Retroactively, this is the end of Piccolo. GT, Super and Dragon Ball Heroes will treat him like garbage. It's easy to point to this arc and say "Yep, this is the day that ruined Piccolo". And I know, Tien and Yamcha went through the same thing, but as much as you dislike this, many people care most about the "Z" part of the franchise. From their point of view, Piccolo was always the main player, Yamcha was always the background one. (And while I read all of Dragon Ball, I just found myself drawn to Piccolo more than Yamcha.)
Side note, most of the time I hate the "passing torch" trope because most time it means a character I like (Goku, Marvel Heroes, Optimus Prime) is being replaced a worse character, probably a lesser clone of OG or someone who goes through same motions of "gosh, how can I live up to legacy?"
It can work as proven in My Hero Academia, but the show is from Next Gen's perspective. Deku has the same power as All-Might, but is a unique and interesting character, working much better than Gohan, Goten or Trunks.

I've always preferred Super Buu (and Kid Buu) to Fat Buu, mainly because I like villain characters and he's more of an outright villain than Fat Buu was (I still like Fat Buu though). I like how those core Buu traits that Fat Buu displayed have now been twisted with him. His hedonism now manifests as an impatient demand for instant gratification, he no longer has a happy mode for his mood swings (replaced with being detached and creepy), and his silliness now primarily manifests when he's mocking his opponents (until the absorptions begin, more on that later). On that note, even his instant killing of the remainder of Earth's population feels like a low-key dark gag with a set up and then subversion of expectations as the punch line.
And I still like him when he starts absorbing people too. Yeah, he becomes more like Freeza and Cell in personality, but I view it more as Buu coming into his full potential as a fighter (which calls back to what Fusion noted earlier about Buu starting to recognize his own worth shortly before fighting Goku). "Buutenks" and "Buuhan" (I hate those names and am only using them here for expediency) represent what Buu is like when he approaches fighting as seriously as Goku and Vegeta do and not just as a hedonistic pleasure or something to do to people who anger him. Lastly, even "Buuhan" celebrates like a silly child both times he thinks he's beaten Vegetto, so the goofy manchild that Buu is at heart is still there even in that state, just hidden underneath all the Freeza/Cell-like bluster he gained through those absorptions. Plus he looks cool with the super long head tentacle and more human-like facial features.
As for him becoming more like Freeza and Cell in personality with these absorptions, keep in mind that the one constant character in all his absorption forms is Piccolo, the character that was originally the prototypical Dragon Ball supervillain. Taking that into account, it makes sense that he becomes more like a typical Dragon Ball supervillain after absorbing Piccolo: Piccolo's father/previous incarnation was the original template for Dragon Ball supervillains. Though Piccolo himself is far from being evil at this point, it's still his characteristics being filtered through an evil personality.
Lastly, ditto on Piccolo's role here being the best use of him in quite a while. People who complain about him not fighting anymore are flat out ignoring how skillfully he's used here, both as the defacto-leader of the group that has to treat with Buu and as a mentor figure/straight man to Gotenks. It's a far better role for him than the red-hearing cannon fodder roles he's had for a while now. Plus I like how even though Dende is officially God now, the dynamic we saw earlier with him deferring to Piccolo for godly decisions is still in play here with Piccolo being the one to take the reigns in negotiating with Buu. It's almost like he's stepped back into his old job as the God of Earth, but as the complete being he originally was before his good side took the position after casting out his evil side. Seeing Piccolo act in this capacity is a nice subtle way to bring his character arc full circle.

It seems like the people who complain about Piccolo not fighting here and being put in this babysitter/mentor role are apart of a crowd that not only values a character *only* because they fight, but also apart of a crowd who only ever wants to see the same thing happening over and over.
Piccolo twice has been put in a position of fake relevance by free power boosts that only allow him a few cool fights before he's totally wasted with nothing to do.
He gets to fight 2nd form Freeza for a bit, then Freeza transforms and wrecks him.
He gets to fight 1st form Cell in an even shorter confrontation, then Cell absorbs a bunch of people and wrecks him.
And people want him to fight Boo because? At this point he'd just get wrecked and you can't even potentially count on something like the Nappa fight happening with Boo because fights in late DB have long since stopped working like that. So all Piccolo fans would want to see here is Piccolo sandbagging to yet another villain and not even getting a decent fight out of it. It'd just be repetitive.

The scene where Piccolo barters the lives of the whole planet to buy some time was always one of my favorite scenes. I feel like he was just one of the only characters who could've believably attempted that without me disliking them for it. For example if the story was different and Goku tried to pull that, well it would feel less like "The right but unfortunate play" and more like "Goddamnit Goku! I KNOW you just wanna see a cool fight!" The only other character's I could see attempting that would be like... Tien.

I was about to say that Vegeta was the first transforming villain, but then I remembered Demon King Piccolo. He got a permanent transformation of sorts by going from old to young, which was a power upgrade. It took the dragonballs to do it and Vegeta's later transformation needed the moon/energy ball thing but in terms of the story, all of these transformations serve the same purpose: a narrative explanation for why the character is suddenly stronger.

Honestly, if you needed a more serious villain than Fat Boo to be the big Dragon Ball Z esque end boss, here’s a novel concept.
Have Enma send Bobbidi sent to purgatory upon his death, since he was killed by a demon (Majin Boo). While his soul wanders, he senses the souls of Dabra and Vegeta, each inhabiting Heaven and Hell respectively. Reaching out with his magic, which is far beyond Enma’s power due to him being weaker than _Kaio,_ he links the minds of both, which gives Vegeta a mind, and in turn his body back, and he starts a ruckus in Hell just as his soul is about to be cleansed. Dabra finds him in Hell per Bobbidi’s soul’s guidance, and once they do, Bobbidi’s soul merges their bodies into a new Madoushi named Akuishin, the God of Malice, who possesses power similar to Gohan’s due to being a Saiyan hybrid.
    Differences:
    - Fat Boo stays fused, with a merger of him and Gohan being the only one who could possibly stand up to Super Saiyan 3 Akuishin. Evil Boo doesn’t exist.
    - Gotenks only uses Super Saiyan 3 as a gag where the punchline is that his head comically bursts into a sparky explosion when he tries to use it. He only uses Super Saiyan 2 during the actual fight.
    - Ultimate Gohan is completely removed, being replaced by the Old Kaioshin’s ritual simply allowing Gohan to transform at will like Goku seemingly can rather than having to draw out that power like he did against Kibito.
    - Kibito gets character development by coming to trust Gohan, and becoming a member of the Dragon Team to fight for the good of the universe, regardless of Kaioshin tradition.
    - Goku comes back briefly when Akuishin breaks the barriers between the living world and Anoyo, and he ends up leaving the living world again by choice at the behest of his wife and kids after Goten and Trunks come to realize that he is the revered legend everyone told stories of.
    - Gohan, Videl, Goten, and Kibito become the next main cast, with Trunks as the rival figure.

Like, the entire reason Vegito and the Potara earrings even existed is because Toriyama wanted to have Goku and Vegeta fuse, but Fusion Reborn was already using that idea, so he retconned the Supreme Kai's earrings (that were originally just for decoration) into being fusion items and made Vegito.

Just a comment on Frieza's ability to transform at will, I think it actually works incredibly well. Frieza was the first and I mean the FIRST real big bad the series had, at least in my opinion. When we were introduced to Frieza he was a cocky, arrogant and prideful dictator who adores playing with the lives of those below him. His ability to transform at will only better serves his arrogance. I mean, what's more fulfilling than fighting someone with a hand tied behind your back knowing at any moment you wanted, you could untie your hand and obliterate them.
I'd say Frieza's ability to transform exceeds higher than Cells who, really only transforms because of Frieza anyways. Main point being, where Cell has a goal until his final form, the goal to be perfect, Frieza always has a goal, to toy with people in order to prove he is the best. The only time he fights seriously is when Goku manages to live up to the legend of the Super Saiyan, a legend Frieza not only feared but deemed impossible. Only by literally facing off against impossibility did Frieza drop his act and for the first time in probably his entire life, fought seriously.
If that isn't better than Cell wanting to achieve perfection and then, really not even achieving his goal anyways, I don't know what is.

Yeah the dread is done well with this Buu. I do love how Piccolo finally gets some time to show why he is among the smartest of the gang. I know he is pretty much just Kami but hey. So yeah fun to see him do this. And you know when you mentioned it is to bad this has to end with a big fight and etc. Just an What If idea. Let´s say Buu turns good the good guys don´t have to fight him. But then it appers that Dabura got sent to Hell and that was a misstake, he absorbs all the evil power and similar to Janemba Hell breaks apart and he returns to fight Buu but now as a creature not willing to fight Dabura takes the evil that was inside Buu and somehow merges kind of becoming a Janemba quallity character and that is who Gotenks and Gohan has to fight. But yeah just a funny idea but clearly not something I would have wanted from what we got.
