    Imagine my disappointment in seeing you didn't rank Shyamalan's ACTING performances. The Academy and SAG awards have been criminally negligent in snubbing M Night and his 'kid-being-forced-to-read-a-textbook-in-class' line delivery that we all know and love.
    My favorite M Knight role was 'Emotionless Monotone Doctor spends 20 minutes telling patient he wasn't injured in train wreck.' That incredible scene set the tone for 90% of the movie dialogue being excruciatingly drawn-out exposition, and Shyamalan's heart-wrenching performance left me dozing off in amazement. It was truly one of the movie roles of all time.
    I can't even fathom the courage and dedication required for a filmmaker to awkwardly shoehorn a role for themselves into every single one of their movies. M Night Shyamalan is the thespian we deserve, but not the one we need.

      Isn't that the plot for the movie 'Taking Lives?' I haven't seen it in a while, but I'm pretty sure that's the movie in a nutshell, down to the flat tire. You have to get up pretty early in the morning if you think you can plagiarize a crappy unpopular movie from 20 years ago and sneak it by me undetected.

    He overused the twist ending formula after it worked on Sixth Sense, to the point it became his self identity as a director.

    • @evanthompson4186
      @evanthompson4186 Місяць тому

      Overused is an understatement. His movies never have the effect of a twist ending because you know going in there will be a twist ending so you're subconsciously putting the pieces together and usually figure it out pretty early on. The real subversion would be for him to not have a twist even though he led us to believe there was. The twist would be there was no twist.

    • @michaelme1548
      @michaelme1548 Місяць тому +1

    • @evanthompson4186
      @evanthompson4186 Місяць тому +1

      @michaelme1548 no he definitely started doing it because of the success of the Sixth Sense. Have you seen the first major movie picture he directed "Wide Awake"? Because it's a completely different movie it's like a family movie. After the Sixth Sense, which is was catapulted him into overnight success, he started making movies that tried to mirror that movie. It was 100% the reason he started making movies the way he does. Now it's his "signature" so he continues. I'm sure he enjoys them, but to say that movie didn't encourage it is to not know his background.

    It arguably all went down hill with The Village. He kept on trying to be a one-trick in cinema with his twist gimmick but the twist in that movie wasn’t great. I admit I like The Village more now than I did when it came out. At the time, however, we all came to the theater expecting something big and it just didn’t happen. After that it was Lady in the Water and I think most of us that went in were still hopeful he’d pull it off but that film was so atrocious that it spoiled any good will left we had for him. I think it was when The Happening came out that my expectations were so low that I at least found comedy in that film. All of my friends and I would then go to M Night Shyamalan films expecting to just laugh at the poor writing. Here and there he’s had some better films, but for every Split there’s an Old coming up right behind it. He just can’t create the lightening in a bottle that he did with his first 3 films, no matter how hard he tries to chase it.
    I also wholeheartedly disagree with your list with the exception of Signs. but it’s only your opinion, so I’ll respect it.

    As a Shyamalan hater, I feel some clarity is needed. I don't think anyone hates him as a director or for coming up with ideas. His films all look great, he gets good performances out of people, and he has wonderful premises. The reason I am a hater is because I think he is an objectively terrible writer. His dialogue is atrocious and he is god-awful at putting together a plausible string of plot points. I even retroactively dislike his earlier stuff because of it. 6th Sense makes no F****** sense whatsoever. Once you get past the surprise factor, it's really hard to look past.
    It's sad because I want to like his films on the basis of his premises and directing talent. But he cannot write and refuses to collaborate with others. The nepotism and ego don't help either.

      How does a ghost really know they're a ghost. The boy saw dead people. So he summons Bruce because actually Bruce was the one that needed help. A grieving wife. Every scene she grieved, she summoned her late husband. He was trapped in limbo. He didn't really exist outside of these occurrences. She needed help letting go. So sixth sense is a master class.

    • @mike9512
      @mike9512 Місяць тому

      @thereviewartistrrp5493 I don't remember every detail, but Pitch Meeting covers it pretty well. There are many scenes in the movie that make absolutely no sense once you realize he is a ghost.
      One of them is the scene where the kid comes home and his mom and Bruce Willis are sitting across from each other. Given that Bruce Willis is supposed to think he is alive and a doctor, that scene makes no sense. There is just no way he got into the house and sat down thinking he was a living, breathing person when the mom is right there in front of him.
      I could have let that slide if it weren't for the fact that Night is, and always has been, a terrible writer.
