Celine Dion has much better songs than that one (which, is not a bad song), but, of course, "My Heart Will Go On" was shoved down our ears as a marketing maneuver. 2. Meryl Streep does open the envelope. When she hugs Daniel Day-Lewis as he walks up to the center of the stage, you can clearly see the card, and she's holding both the card and the envelope with one hand. 3. You forget that when Joaquin Phoenix presented that Oscar, it was 2021, and we were in the MIDDLE OF A PANDEMIC! No one wanted to be there, there was no vaccine yet, and people were wary of each other. 4. Many of the moments you're criticizing involves elderly actors presenting awards. You say "Warren Beaty should've said this...", but you forget, not only is that moment really awkward, but Warren's thought processing is probably not the same as it was 10, 20, or 30 years ago. It's not only a big deal for them to be standing up in front of Hollywood's best, but it is also a huge effort they're physically and mentally making to be there. It doesn't take away the fact that it was a bad moment, but, don't expect elderly people to say what you're thinking.

I'm not sure if it's true but i read somewhere once, that Joaquin was really pulling for Chadwick to win. Also the fact that they allowed will Smith to stay in the building after what happened and made that long @$$ speech, but the academy claims they don't condone with violence. I completely agree with you when you talked about the cast of Pulp Fiction. Hollywood is a bunch of people with no backbone who are so afraid to maintain their image that they would give a standing ovation to a terrible person who just assaulted someone. They're all sick, in my opinion.
The Kathy/Catherine thing reminds me of at the 2002 Daytime Emmy Awards when two ladies named Susan (Lucci, Flannery) were nominated for Lead Actress. Flannery won but the presenters only said "Susan!!!!" and they played the wrong theme music so people thought Lucci won. It was a very embarrasing moment for daytime Emmy.
I thought of the same moment. I believe that Flannery's costars did say her last name, but the crew backstage insisted that Lucci (who was backstage) walk out. Lucci even mouthed "Susan Flannery?"
I remember that. The confusion stems from the presenter, Adrienne Frantz, and her shrill shrieking excitement over Susan Flannery (a castmate and real-life friend) winning. She said the full name but was literally shrieking it so you couldn't understand. The soap press took her to task for causing the confusion and "humiliating" Susan Lucci.
Good choice for #1. I would add when Paul Newman presented best cinematography in 1995. He didn’t read the nominees. The winner John Toll in his speech named the other nominees. It was really awkward for Newman. I’m sure that’s why the nominees are now recorded beforehand.
Same, one of my fave moments and a sweet one I somehow always remember, like a wink and a nod to people that they were in Entrapment. No one gaf about Kathy Bates besides Brian lol
I don’t know if that moment is entirely Joaquin Phoenix fault for how things ended during the 93rd Oscar ceremony. While I do think the way he presented the award didn’t help matters, but the ending structure of the show and the change of switching the categories around were the main issues above Phoenix’s presentation.
I have also heard or read somewhere that Will Rogers first called the actresses who had not won, and then announced the real winner for Best Actress 🤦🏽, the first two actresses thought they had won in a tie. 😱
Here’s an idea- worst Oscar nominated performances by great prolific actors What’s the worst nominated role from people like Meryl Streep, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Katharine Hepburn and Bette Davis?
I don't find Madonna's reaction disrespectful at all. She just spoke out what everyone knew from the moment the nominations where announced. B the way "My Heart Will Go On" kept her Single "Frozen" and the Titanic soundtrack kept her album "Ray of Light" from entering the No.1 spot on the Billboard Charts.
If Warren and Faye (really Faye) is among the worst, then I think Jordan Horowitz (the La La Land producer who grabbed the envelope out of Beatty's hand to prove that Moonlight really did win) should be among the best.
Good call on number 1. I was thinking about that moment when you opened the list with the Catherine confusion incident. Then I was wondering what could have topped the Moonlight/La La Land fiasco, but then you put the "Come up and get it, Frank" in its proper place at number one. Kudos.
I think, your choice with Madonna is a bit exaggerated. it is a nice add lip in a year, where it seemed all clear. if that is bad, then this means, the chance of doing it wrong is 99%. What should people say then, to not get it wrong ? just plain read the name and with not too much excitement and not too board? that by itself is boring
I would have included the 6th ceremony as well but for a different reason. Will Rogers invited Best Actress nominees May Robson and Diana Wynyard onstage, congratulated them for their "sparkling performances," probably leading everyone to think that there was a tie (there was the year before for Best Actor). He then announced the winner as. . . Katherine Hepburn. Ouch. I bet that stung. You make a great list, but this should have been near the top.
Yeah Entrapment was a really popular movie at the time, in fact I would argue that was the entire reason they had him present the award since she was expected to win. This was lost on no one except Brian apparently.
I don't think Kathy was confused. Her full name is Kathleen, not Catherine. I think she was just looking for Catherine to see her get up to accept her Oscar.
Interesting. When you called Lala Land/Moonlight as 2 I thought, what on earth could beat that? I had never heard the “Come on up and get it, Frank” story. My list would include, somewhere, Julia Roberts’ awarding of Best Actor to Denzel Washington for Training Day (“I love my life,” etc.).
One of the worst winner announcements in my opinion is when Denzel said “by a nose!” To Nicole Kidman. He was probably trying to make a joke but it has the connotation that she won because of her prosthetic and not her acting. 🤷🏻♀️
Given Nicholson made fun of her prosthetic nose at the GGs (high on Valium kind you), it’s not shocking that Denzel was gonna make a joke; you can see though he was happy for her win
This reminds me of the Daytime Emmys when they announced Susan Flannery as the winner, but the award show Directing team played the All My Children music and the camera went to Susan LUCCI backstage who starts walking out as if she just won her 2nd Emmy. Only to realize her name was never called. Shame on the Daytime Emmys for that one. Just awful.
Even though it's not Oscar-related, but worth mentioning is in 2001 when Elizabeth Taylor was fumbling with the envelope when presenting Gladiator as Best Picture - Drama in the Golden Globes, as well as during the 2019 Annies when Francis Fisher didn't even know how to pronounce Michael Giacchino's name after he won Best Original Score.
The funniest part of the "Adele Dazeem" thing was how they tried to make a moment out of it the next year by having Travolta and Idina Menzel present something together, and he was extremely strange and uncomfortable for that presentation too -- weirdly touching Idina's face?? Worth a revisit.
I'm SO GLAD you picked the Frank debacle for the number one choice! It has been brought up in several books about the Oscars I've read and it never ceases to be painful to read about.
At the 1970 Oscar ceremonies, Barbra Streisand plays coy after opening the Best Actor envelope. She says, "I'm not gonna tell ya." (Then the winner's name, John Wayne.)
I thought you'd also mention that Jack Palance mistakenly called Judy Davis English in his pre-reveal banter as part of a joke about the nominees' national backgrounds. Cringe!
The thing about the La La Land Best Picture announcement that always gets me is that when Faye Dunaway says “La La Land” the audience just screams. And I doesn’t sound like an enthusiastic yell of that everyone was so happy for the movie, it sound like a bomb just went off in the theater.
They showed clips from each Best Picture nominee so it was only fitting they announce the winner just like Best Original Song. Pacino did nothing wrong.
I think the academy leadership should have gotten together on a call and declared Smith ineligible due to assaulting a presenter and gone with the runner up ie the actor with the second most votes. Then they award him and it’s pretty sucky to see people standing and applauding.

OMG I just posted the same thing without reading your comment first. But YES that's the first thing that came to my mind too!!!
Good choice for #1. I would add when Paul Newman presented best cinematography in 1995. He didn’t read the nominees. The winner John Toll in his speech named the other nominees. It was really awkward for Newman. I’m sure that’s why the nominees are now recorded beforehand.
Another fantastic video! Never heard about that Will Rogers Oscar moment but to be honest it's kind of hilarious.
SHUT UP I LOVE THE CONNERY ONE it’s so cute and personal😂😂😂😂
Same, one of my fave moments and a sweet one I somehow always remember, like a wink and a nod to people that they were in Entrapment. No one gaf about Kathy Bates besides Brian lol
I don’t know if that moment is entirely Joaquin Phoenix fault for how things ended during the 93rd Oscar ceremony. While I do think the way he presented the award didn’t help matters, but the ending structure of the show and the change of switching the categories around were the main issues above Phoenix’s presentation.
The Oshkar goezh to Catherine
Well researched, thought out, and explained as always.
Thanks for going way back in the Oscar archives. That’s always fun! 😎
I have also heard or read somewhere that Will Rogers first called the actresses who had not won, and then announced the real winner for Best Actress 🤦🏽, the first two actresses thought they had won in a tie. 😱
Please do a video about Tomei’s win.
Here’s an idea- worst Oscar nominated performances by great prolific actors
What’s the worst nominated role from people like Meryl Streep, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Katharine Hepburn and Bette Davis?
I won’t go anywhere that far
Palsnce paused because he was unsure of pronunciation.
That's what I was thinking.
He is a hero. He clarified in the moment critical information and allowed Moonlight to take center stage.
I don’t think Madonna was condescending. “My heart will go on “ was the biggest song that year and everyone probably knew the song was winning it.
I love that the closed captioning calls him Walking Phoenix.
Worst announcement: Grace Kelly winning Best Actress instead of Judy Garland (1954/1955).
Good call on number 1. I was thinking about that moment when you opened the list with the Catherine confusion incident. Then I was wondering what could have topped the Moonlight/La La Land fiasco, but then you put the "Come up and get it, Frank" in its proper place at number one. Kudos.
you need to have a sharper sense of humor about madonna
Goddamn I love your lit videos, Bryan, and I especially love your scope - kudos for your unexpected but fitting number-one choice!
I remember the Adele Dazeem incident spawning an internet generator where you could "Travoltafy Your Name" 😂
I’d LOVE for you to do a video about the Marisa win. Always found that situation FASCINATING
This channel desperately needs Meryl Streep to earn click count 😂😂😂
But this one puts Meryl in a bad light... I'm heartbroken.
indeed, will smith is gross.
I really love this channel
oh please the catherine zeta-jones one isn’t bad at all, he wouldn’t have said catherine if it was kathy
I mean, Sean practically mumbled the name, so she might've been unsure what she heard.
@@AtlasBlizzard that's a fair point. I didn't think about that.
#1 was a real surprise. I also liked the symmetry with #10.
Yeah the Will Smith incident wrecked the Oscars. The way they still presented him with that award exposed the b.s. and hypocrisy of Hollywood.
Adèle Dazeem was robbed.
Has this become a Jack Palance hate channel? 😭😭😭
That annoyed me too, glad to see others have had the same thought. Felt a bit tasteless.
Yay new video!!
Surprised Bette Davis in 1987 wasn't mentioned. The Oscars page doesn't even list it
This reminds me of the Daytime Emmys when they announced Susan Flannery as the winner, but the award show Directing team played the All My Children music and the camera went to Susan LUCCI backstage who starts walking out as if she just won her 2nd Emmy. Only to realize her name was never called. Shame on the Daytime Emmys for that one. Just awful.
You are being very picky. Jack Palance, he was likely making sure he pronounced Tomei correctly.
Yeah, it's all a bit over thought.
13:14 You find Al Pacino's i see Oppenheimer, amusing?
Haha you are the best. Best videos ever!
Great show… thank you!
I love the Academy Awards. Best night of the year!☮️💟✌️🤗
That should have been Anthony Hopkins saying Marisa's name. 😮😅
They showed clips from each Best Picture nominee so it was only fitting they announce the winner just like Best Original Song. Pacino did nothing wrong.
Marisa Tomei DESERVED to win.
Sean Connery accepting his Oscar said "Well, it's about time!"
Bonnie and Clyde.
Marissa deserves every single accolade she achieved for that role. That Oscar was earned.
I think the academy leadership should have gotten together on a call and declared Smith ineligible due to assaulting a presenter and gone with the runner up ie the actor with the second most votes. Then they award him and it’s pretty sucky to see people standing and applauding.
