The Moody Blues are an English rock band formed in 1964. This song was released in 1967 on their album Days of Future Passed. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.
Also, the lead singer, Justin Hayward wrote this when he was 19 years old! He's now 77 and still touring! His voice is still as beautiful and compelling as ever.

This song is from the fully orchestrated, concept album called “Days of Future Passed”. It wonderfully illustrates a day in the life, from morning to night. Definitely worth a full album reaction!

The following (spoken word) verse is called "Late Lament"...
    Breathe deep the gathering gloom
Watch lights fade from every room
Bedsitter people look back and lament
Another day's useless energy is spent
    Impassioned lovers wrestle as one
Lonely man cries for love and has none
New mother picks up and suckles her son
Senior citizens wish they were young
Cold-hearted orb that rules the night
Removes the colors from our sight
    Red is grey and yellow-white
But we decide which is right
    And which is an illusion

Justin Hayward wrote this song when he was 19 for a girl he loved but he had not the guts to tell her.
In the end they found each other and to this day, tbey are still together!
This was 100% how the original record sounded in 1969, in fact a bit longer with a beautiful intro as well. It can be found on You Tube as well : ua-cam.com/video/lAl_awesPLY/v-deo.htmlsi=A1NJzZ3R2hazjRcT

I suspect you would really enjoy "Lucky Man" by Emerson, Lake and Palmer released in 1970. Similar vibe.
Also, the studio version of this leads into a spoken poem that is cool enough to track down for you own edification.

Big and warm greetings from Turkey. I am an old school rocker. Playing drums and guitar since long long years. Ofcourse you can imagine that music is a part of my life. Heavy metal, rock etc. i like the way how you doing. I love to watch you. You are so cute, she sweet and so emotional. Ofcourse I am surprised how your generation doesn’t know about so so so many songs which were written with feelings, pain and emotions. But I am so glad how you choose the songs. Your comments are lovely, your emotions are touching me. I watch your videos with a big smooth mood. You make me always calm. Your voice is so calming. Thank you for this channel. Thank for all what you are doing. I don’t know you hear about them, I would recommend you a real legendary song ; Eagles - Hotel California. Has also a nice story. I guess you will like the song. Eagles are one of the Legend in music history. Wish the best. Please continue as you do. Sorry for my English. Best greetings 👋👋👋

The Moodies are my favorite band, with dozens upon dozens of gorgeous songs. What's sad is that back then all the way up 'til now, they're underappreciated. Stacey, whether on video or not, do yourself a favor and go back to so many of their beautiful songs from the late '60s and early '70s... Thanks for checking on Justin and his buddies!

i saw the Moodies in concert back in the mid 70's. It was the most unusual rock concert I had ever been to. I was in my mid 20's and there were people there in their 30's and 40's who had their kids with them. The crowds reaction when the show was over was unique. Everyone just sat there stunned, like "what, we never left where we started"? Everyone just looked around in amazement at what they had just experienced. Magical is the word that fits. Perfect reaction to this band.

Great, iconic song! A timeless classic I have heard 1,000s of time, what happened to you just now made me cry at the Unbelievable beauty, both the song and how it affected you, as gorgeous as any art made by man. The Moody Blues have been part of soundtrack of my life. You so need to hear that original, studio album, Day of Futures Past, it comes from, it is pioneering prog rock merged with a classical orchestra as they did an early concept album based on the various segments of a typical day. Masterpiece album, made me an instant fan for life, most fans back in the day considered them on a level close to the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the WHO as being one of the best bands ever. Every album they did from this one in 1967 (a magic year in music) to 1972 (more of the same magic) is worth a full review, all are semi concept albums made to be heard in their entirety, their songs flowed into each other seamlessly to universal acclaim. To see the reactions of modern reactors to their stuff gives me a feeling of euphoria, we had the same feelings way back when. They were perfect for soothing out an acid trip starting to go sideways, calming me down into a much better state of mind, their music is awesome therapy, I put them on often when feeling down and they bring me up. They are great musicians, songwriters, singers and arrangers of music at its peak of creativity, melody, harmony, with the lyrics and chops to make it all legendary. Start with Tuesday Afternoon from Days of Futures Past for you next reaction, but please do the whole album when you can, a musical experience like no other. Enjoy!
(I love your authentic reactions, you get my heart racing as I feel so lucky to have been around when these great songs were happening. I saw them 3 times, once with the full orchestra, we cried at the end of this song each time, beyond emotional).
    🔥🎵🎸🎤🎹🎻🎺🎶🔥

Google told me that I’d seen Deep Purple and Nazareth, at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, on January 18, 1976…and they included newspaper articles, pictures, and what the ticket 🎫 stub looked like‼️

Along with Pink Floyd, The Moody Blues were one of the bands I discovered that showed how rock music could be high art. This version of the song is so good, although the studio version has a spoken poem at the end of the song from drummer, Graham Edge, may he rest in peace. Pink Floyd put to music the perfect blend of hope and reality, leading to something ultimately positive, and The Moody Blues did something similar, except with deeper, more painful longing, leading, also, to an optimistic perspective. I know you're getting a lot of suggestions, so I'll throw in my hat for "Question," "Voices in the Sky," and "The Story in Your Eyes," although there are a lot of other worthy songs too. I'm so glad you're checking this band out.

"Nights in White Satin" by The Moody Blues was a hit in multiple years. It first gained chart success in 1967, reaching number 19 on the UK Singles Chart and number 103 in the US in 1968. However, when reissued in 1972, it became the band's most successful single in the US, reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and hitting number one on the Cash Box Top 100, earning a gold certification for sales of over a million copies.

According to Justin Hayward, the song was written between two love affairs. I'm not sure if he had met his wife, Marie, at this point, but he wrote it when he was 19. It was, in part, inspired by some white satin sheets he received as a gift. The song was written around the time the band was creating a new stage show after they dropped the R & B act the band had been doing when Justin joined the band (there's a whole history of the band prior to 1967, but that's quite a digression. It is worth the discussion if you ever react to Moody Blues' first hit, "Go Now").
When Justin first presented the song to the rest of the band, their first reaction was lukewarm. However, their keyboardist, Mike Pinder, came up with the accompaniment on the Mellotron, things changed, and they got the first inkling that they had something special. How the song became a part of Days of Future Passed (and indeed the album itself) is a story of wild serendipity.

There's something you have to keep in mind: these songs became classics for a REASON. Back then there was no autotune, looping could only be done by physically splicing tapes, and so on. Since there were little to no computers the music relied much, much more on the actual skill of the musicians and singers. Too many musicians have become dependent on electronics but it's making their sound more and more generic, and too often the exceptional musicians get drowned out by the background noise of this generic music. Conversely it has become much easier to search for music but I still feel that back then, the exceptional musicians stood out more. I'm glad you enjoyed this song because a true classic never becomes Jurassic. 🙂 And if you liked this one, I think you'll also enjoy "Old and wise" by Alan Parsons with Colin Blunstone singing: ua-cam.com/video/-4HI1_LTWIk/v-deo.htmlsi=dN4XbZVzrkDueQ84

Staci, the back story of this album is that when stereo was invented by Phillips they needed a demo album to send to audio shops to demonstrate the stereo sound. They got the London Philharmonic Orchestra to play and needed to add something for younger people. They found an unknown British band and ask them to write songs on the theme of one day. Nights in White Satin is obviously the night. People hearing this album in audio shops were astounded and wanted to buy it only to be told it was a demonstration album only and was not for sale. Phillips was inundated with thousands of request to buy the demo so Days of Futures Past was released as the first Moody Blues album. Please check out the 1967 hit Whiter Shade of Pale by Procol Harem Denmark 2006. You won’t be disappointed.

Hi Stacey…I have enjoyed your channels journey and your journey into this amazing world of music. The Moody Blues are a truly original band who created such ground breaking music in a time when music was expanding from early R&R into the music you focus on on your channel. The creativity was seemingly endless and their recording of Days Of Future Past incorporated elements rarely used on “rock” records of the day…full orchestra being one example. Another would be the concept of the record which was one day, from rising out of your slumber to falling asleep. I would suggest that you listen to the whole record in one sitting, whether that is on the channel or in your personal life. There is one more “hit” from the recording which is called “Tuesday Afternoon” if you want to react to that one before the full album listen.
Keep up your good works, Stacey. Your journey is worthy and I look forward to your posts…living vicariously through your eyes and ears as I grew up with this music and experienced it with all of the same emotions so many years ago. Thank You!

The song was released in 1967, but the single was cut down to a little over three minutes and didn't include the soaring orchestra in the second half of the song. Five years later a DJ in Seatle decided to play the longer version to be able to take a smoke break. The phone rang off the hook after the song played and Nights in White Satin went viral, 1972 style. It became a hit, five years after being released. The live performance that you saw was close to the album version minus the "Late Lament" poem mentioned below.
The album Days of Future Past includes some songs that are quite dated along with a couple of songs that are timeless. Tuesday Afternoon and Nights and White Satin are the highlights. Since Nights and White Statin ends with a gong, the album begins with that same gong apparently played in reverse to let the album signify the cycling of the day. Those kids were quite clever in 1967. :)

Now, that you know what the Moody Blies are about. And you hopefully decided to go down that path, Prepare yourself for a wonderful, exciting journey. I've been fortunate enough to see them live 3 times now. What's exciting also is the fact that this is not an unusual experiencewatching this particular song because they have another dozen equal to and as good as this one. These guys are no one hit wonder and they are in the rock and roll hall of fame. And actually, this specific performance that was conducted live at. I believe Albert hall in England the rest of this concert can all be found on UA-cam also. I would like to point out that the remainder of the songs at this concert are a bit more psychedelic. I point this out because if you have decided that you want to hear More of these guys. I wanted you to be aware that they have more songs from this particular performance. Which might convince you to check them out rather than their studio albums. There is nothing better than live music. Anyway, I hope you have a lot of luck with your UA-cam channel and I hope that you enjoy the future as much as you just enjoyed today.

This was the theme of so many high school proms in the early 1970s, lol. And yes, the singer is Justin Hayward.

Such a classic. I read that the lead singer, Justin Hayward, wrote this song after being dumped by his girlfriend.

...yes, an amazing love song, Stacey - one of the best for me too, and its also their best song overall IMHO, so you went in straight to the top of their game, this one stand alongside with another brilliant classic, performed also live decades later, also with orchestra, and that one is as mind blowing and emotional as this one. Its Procol Harum: 'A whiter shade of Pale', live in Denmark in 2006... bring your tissues! 🥲

Stacey, the Moody Blues made concept albums. They were the first band that played a fusion of classical and pop/ rock music. Just dive deeper into the music of this band and enjoy.

Try TuesdayAfternoon, from the same concept lp, Stacey.

We keep telling you that the 60s and 70s were a very magical and emotional error. If you keep on listening to this music somethings going to click in your mind. at some point, and you’re going to truly experience the meaning behind that statement of watch, do you listen to Pink Floyd and many many others, poco harem, and the moody, blues no exception this music was meant to be epic. Something you couldn’t possibly ever forget once you hear it and it was all 100% raw talent. I think I remember mentioning one time before but we would love to see you in a 70s get up bellbottoms ring belt floppy hat with a peace sign button. And a pair of round rose colored visual sunshades you would fit right in can you go on?

Have you honestly never heard this before? I'm wondering because of its popularity and constant playing on the radio. When the Moody Blues appears in concert and they're going to do parts of "Days of Future Past" album, they have an orchestra behind them. I saw them do the entire album at Red Rocks outside of Denver and it was EPIC! You should listen to the entire album because it tells a story of a day in the life.

They didn't always have the orchestra behind them. I've seen them five times, but only once with an orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl. They played with the LA Philharmonic that night. The Red Rocjs show was probably the one they made a DVD of. I've watched it many times.

Moody Blues were one of the first groups to fuse rock and orchestral music. And they did this back in the 1960s! Here, we are watching a performance of a song they made popular in the latter part of the 1960s.

Here. Fixed the ending for you:
    Breathe deep the gathering gloom,
Watch lights fade from every room.
Bedsitter people look back and lament,
    Another day’s useless energy spent.
    Impassioned lovers wrestle as one,
Lonely man cries for love and has none.
New mother picks up and suckles her son,
Senior citizens wish they were young.
Cold hearted orb that rules the night,
Removes the colours from our sight.
Red is grey and yellow white.
But we decide which is right.
    And which is an illusion?

Bands like The "Moody Blues" like "Yes" like "Pink Floyd" all from a certain era where there was no auto-tune and they sound brilliant because they are!!! The next song you should do from The Moody blues would be "Tuesday Afternoon"!! It kind of has the same feel as this song but it's just simply about what the title says it's about Tuesday afternoon! But again done brilliantly and beautifully!!

Romantic is a very good word to use to characterize the music of the Moody Blues. To get the full impact try to listen to the full album: Days of Future Past. It takes you through an entire day starting with the moonlight which precedes the dawn and culminates with Nights in White Satin and finally concludes with a spoken poem by the drummer Grahame Edge which is an another invocation to the “cold heated orb that rules the night.”

Gorgeous reaction. Loved to see the emotion pulled out of you. This is what music used to sound like, complete with epic lyrics and vocals and various instrumental accompaniment from masters. Good to see you exploring it. This era of music will change your life, and you will be drawn to it over the current era of music for the same reason as those who grew up with Moody Blues and other artists from that era.

The orchestration on this is identical to the album. Basically, prior to the release of this album the only stereo records were classical. All pop and rock was released in mono. Decca wanted to test the water to see if there was a market for stereo pop, so they wanted to hire an orchestra to play instrumental covers of the odd pop song. The guy in charge of the project happened to have seen the Moody Blues in his local pub, so he decided to orchestra them instead. Decca were furious, but the money was spent, so they released the album. Luckily it was a hit, otherwise we'd still be listening in mono. The entire album, like Dark Side Of The Moon, needs to be listened in one sitting.
