I am getting braver, though, with experience, and am able to resist changing the pot right away. The biggest temptation comes with succulents when the pots look so small. I bought a variegated ficus benjamina that had been in the plant shop for months. It was starting to drop its leaves a little bit, so I thought - well, the price is reasonable so I'll give it a try. When I got the plant home, I let it sit for an hour, and then I removed it from the pot. It was completely rootbound and soaking wet. Thankfully, the Swedish Plantguys have a video explaining how to dry out a plant. So, I did that overnight. This morning, it's a bit drier, but the potting soil is one of those fabric pots (I think) that was simply placed into a plastic nursery pot. I can remove some of the dirt on the top, but the plant is so root bound, I'm hoping if I wait til this afternoon, it will have dried out some more so I can try to get a little bit more of the soil off the top and maybe around the bottom. Interestingly, no more leaves fell off the weeping fig tree during the night, so that's good news. This is not a large tree - maybe 80 cm tall - and it's in the natural form, not shaped into a ball at the top. Repotting is what I hate the most because it's hard to get good potting mix here in Finland and the pumice sold is formed into little round balls which clog up the holes in the bottom of the pot. So, I buy Canna Terra Professional from Germany, add orchard bark, some perlite, and a small amount of vermiculite to make a fast draining potting mix. I really wish I could buy Miracle Grow products or potting soil from the Swedish Plantguys. SERIOUSLY!!!

My Mother rehomed a plant with me when moving…I’m realizing that plant hasn’t been repotted in at least 4 years, minimum. It’s always been a reliable happy plant, never a pest issue or a sad looking leaf. It never would have occurred to me to repot! You probably just saved my wonderful umbrella tree (Schefflera). I'm a BEGINNER gardener and up until now, the videos I've watched have instructed how to do things, but not why, so I struggle to follow the advice. Thank you for your concise explanations!! Unfortunately I have to repot plants almost right away since they often come in very bad soil or have parasites on them. It's incredibly frustrating because the prices are often very high too. Couple of times I just pinched a piece and grew it myself because I didnt want to bother with pests.

The easiest way to remove a plastic nursery pot is use scissors and make a small cut through the pot, starting at the top and cutting down a couple inches (3-5 cm). I had a plant that would not come out, no matter what. The nursery pot was bulging at the bottom and the plant inside had big tuberous roots. So, I carefully made a slit in the side of the pot, starting at the top of the pot and cutting down a few centimeters along the side of the pot, keeping the scissors against the pot and not cutting the roots. Because the plant was completely root bound with big fat roots, I think if I had continued to massage the pot to get the plant out, the roots could have been damaged. Here's the bad part - it came from the plant shop in that condition. I understand this video goes up 2 pot sizes, but I usually try to go up one pot size because I had bad luck with a bigger pot. But when you go up one size, there might not be much room between the sides of the pot and rootball. So, after I add soil, I gently tap the side of the pot to help the soil settle without compacting it. I like the stick idea, but I have a question - is it bad to tap the side of the pot? I've seen professional plant growers do this and it seemed to work for my fussy plant, but what do you think? I want to know the best way because after dealing with fungus gnats - I have no idea how they came into my 5th floor apartment and I always check plants very carefully before I purchase one - some of my plants had to be repotted. They were simply too wet, even though I was careful not to add too much of the solution with SF nematodes. Really, we need to be able to get Mosquito bits here in the EU because that's so much easier and cheaper. It's for sale in the UK, but time was of the essence and I could not risk the package being held up by Finnish Customs because the UK is no longer part of the EU.
Can you do a video on acclimating plants? I have some plants that have adjusted to their new environment and other that are being fussy. I don't really know what to do about it.
Third, and also about how long to acclimatise ones that are bare rooted. Alot of the plants I aquire are typically bare rooted because that's more beneficial to alot of Australian Natives and I'm curious if there's much difference.
I repot my plants when I see that the soil from the greenhouse is of poor quality, and stays wet for too long (like for weeks). So when I see that, I mix my own soil according to the type of plant I'm repotting. Also here in the tropics we don't have seasons, so we can repot all year long :D plants don't go to dormancy here as far as I know!

Great video & very informative.. I recently noted that my Chinese evergreen had a small plastic basket where it was sitting on top of the soil. (4 plants in the pot each had their own plastic basket) When I went to transplant it I noticed that roots had been growing and quite entangled. I struggled to cut off those plastic baskets in order to free the roots and watered it. Now the leaves have wilted. This was done on Feb.12. Will it recover and how long will it take? The soil is still moist...help!

Most of houseplants I bought this year (EU) are planted in death trap waste soil. If I wait 6 days they’d be gone. Garden plants are all fine so far. For example I bought succulent and found out at home it’s planted in soaked normal soil.

I find that I need to buy the less expensive small size plants. The problem is they are often root bound and also are planted in what appears to be pure hard peat moss and sometimes even a spongy material. I have always just slid the plants into another pot and fitted fresh soil around it. Now I wonder if I should be trying to break out some of the original soil disturbing the roots as I repot.

Look for a full spectrum, led growlight with a switch for the vegitative lights, and one for the flowering lights. Wattage and such depends on what size space.

Hi Sir, I have a question: I recently repot my Monstera adansonii into a bigger pot. There's generally no signs of wilting except for one or two yellowed very old leaves, otherwise all the leaves are firm and green. However, it seems that it had stopped growing as the developing new leaf stayed the same way for weeks. I had broken some roots when they got lodged in the old pot. How do I help it grow again, or should I just be patient and wait for it to grow again?
I'm expecting a sansaveria whale fin in the mail tomorrow. How soon do I water it in after potting it tomorrow? It was pricey and I'd hate to ruin it.thanks!
I wish you said something about the case when the roots are coming out from the drainage pot. The pot still fits but these roots... sometimes they touch the drained water in the planter and I'm afraid they can get rotten.

What do you advise if you feel like a plant is in soil that is too water retentive for the species in your particular space. For example, I bought a small ficus elastica tineke in a 4 inch pot. It is in what looks like almost pure peat moss. My home around 50% humidity even in the winter without a humidifier. I watered this plant two weeks ago and the top of the soil is still moist. This troubles me. I don't think the ficus will last long in this substrate. Is this a situation where you would repot sooner? I am trying to hold off until spring to repot, but I am trying to balance that advice with the advice not to keep this plant too wet.
@@kimtobey3085 for me it's not just big box stores. It's the nurseries that supply all of the stores. They small plant shops aren't any better most of the time. The ficus in question came from a small shop, but probably a big nursery. Ugh. 3 days til solstice. That's what I keep telling myself. The days are about to start getting longer.
I totally agree!!! I often want to give the new plant a healthier substrate with more drainage. Waiting six months is a stretch. At this very moment I have a new Sanseveria fernwood, a beautiful fan-shaped plant. It is from IKEA in a tiny pot of pure peat with the tip of a root grinning out from the top of the soil! Hello!!! I need help! I repotted my chillies into the self watering system made with pet bottles you demonstrated. But the soil is really wet. I removed the water and let it dry up a bit before adding the water again. Checked this morning and it is wet again! I use 2/3 standard planting soil (blomjord. Is that standard? They only had massive bags that said planting soil and I don’t need that much 😅) and 1/3 pumice. I checked the substrates video. Btw my pilea peperomioides cutting is loving the transfer from water to pumice. It looked sad for two days but now it is really perking up. I also repotted my Monstera Deliciosa. I know it might not be the best time of year, but I knew that the soil did not have enough drainage and was packed. The pot is also to big, but I though that’s to late to change. I noticed soft mushy roots and really wet soil around the center. But there was no smell so I didn’t go in and cut them away. I have used sticks to support it so maybe they had been cut of and was decaying naturally? But now I am anxious about that. I also reused the soil since it was relatively new. I just mixed it up with about 30-40% pumice. I den moved it to a better location in terms of lighting. Before it was standing between 3-4 meters away from a southern window but to the side. So it didn’t get that much light. Now it is in my kitchen 2m from a eastern window with lots of indirect sunlight instead. It also now has a mosspole(?) to climb on. One other thing was that 2 air roots was getting soft and mushy. I had 3, all about 4-5cm, and the 2 top most roots was soft and mushy while the lowest one was firm and more root-like. I will now leave it alone and just give mist it a couple times a day. But I am really concerned for it. I really did mess up this spring when I planted a lot of herbs. To big pots to fast, not adjusting the drainage for the plants, combining plants that want dry and wet in the same pot, no trimming to make them bushy, no nutrients and way to packed soil. Can’t even stick my finger into the pot to check the moisture. Thank you for giving me a chance to repot my perennials correctly when fall comes 🙏🏽 Also if you read the entirety of the comments you are the best!!
You say it's beneficial to remove something like 20% of the roots when repotting then you show a severely potbound plant and claim you prefer not to loosen its roots that have completely encircled themselves because you are afraid of injuring them. Maybe there is some contradiction over there? One could say this is exactly the case where it might be beneficial to remove some roots if it helps loosen them.
Thank you for the video - some good advises on the repotting time and the growing period. However- it would be more helpful if you show the roots cutting technique- many people would appreciate that. Also - there are a few plants that fo not require watering straight after repotting, as they need to get their roots settled first, such as Crassula Ovata and few others, this could be good to mention. And lastly - I do appreciate that this is business- but really - how many times can you recommend your other videos through you presentation? Just link them all in the description box and people will see. As well as asking for subscription, likes and shares - it was done no less than 6-7 times throughout the video, I guess once is enough - utbis very distracting. I heard that you must physically loosen the roots of a root-bound plant when repotting or the roots will remain bonded.
I find that I need to buy the less expensive small size plants. Hi Sir, I have a question: I recently repot my Monstera adansonii into a bigger pot. There's generally no signs of wilting except for one or two yellowed very old leaves, otherwise all the leaves are firm and green. However, it seems that it had stopped growing as the developing new leaf stayed the same way for weeks. I had broken some roots when they got lodged in the old pot. How do I help it grow again, or should I just be patient and wait for it to grow again?

when we buy plants Online they are usually mailed in 3 or 4 inch post. It's not possible to wait for 6 months. What's your opinion on this.

I wish you said something about the case when the roots are coming out from the drainage pot. The pot still fits but these roots... sometimes they touch the drained water in the planter and I'm afraid they can get rotten.

What do you advise if you feel like a plant is in soil that is too water retentive for the species in your particular space. For example, I bought a small ficus elastica tineke in a 4 inch pot. It is in what looks like almost pure peat moss. My home around 50% humidity even in the winter without a humidifier. I watered this plant two weeks ago and the top of the soil is still moist. This troubles me. I don't think the ficus will last long in this substrate. Is this a situation where you would repot sooner? I am trying to hold off until spring to repot, but I am trying to balance that advice with the advice not to keep this plant too wet.
I run into the same issue with purchasing plants in the wrong type of soil (in my environment and care), such as big box stores and online.
@@kimtobey3085 for me it's not just big box stores. It's the nurseries that supply all of the stores. They small plant shops aren't any better most of the time. The ficus in question came from a small shop, but probably a big nursery. Ugh. 3 days til solstice. That's what I keep telling myself. The days are about to start getting longer.
I totally agree!!! I often want to give the new plant a healthier substrate with more drainage. Waiting six months is a stretch. At this very moment I have a new Sanseveria fernwood, a beautiful fan-shaped plant. It is from IKEA in a tiny pot of pure peat with the tip of a root grinning out from the top of the soil! What should I do? Wait six months? Sounds too long for this plant.
@@judithlenzin7444 oh, lord. They love being tight in their pots, but that is not an appropriate substrate for that plant. Pot on!

Hello!!! I need help! I repotted my chillies into the self watering system made with pet bottles you demonstrated. But the soil is really wet. I removed the water and let it dry up a bit before adding the water again. Checked this morning and it is wet again! I use 2/3 standard planting soil (blomjord. Is that standard? They only had massive bags that said planting soil and I don’t need that much 😅) and 1/3 pumice. I checked the substrates video. Btw my pilea peperomioides cutting is loving the transfer from water to pumice. It looked sad for two days but now it is really perking up.
I also repotted my Monstera Deliciosa. I know it might not be the best time of year, but I knew that the soil did not have enough drainage and was packed. The pot is also to big, but I though that’s to late to change. I noticed soft mushy roots and really wet soil around the center. But there was no smell so I didn’t go in and cut them away. I have used sticks to support it so maybe they had been cut of and was decaying naturally? But now I am anxious about that. I also reused the soil since it was relatively new. I just mixed it up with about 30-40% pumice. I den moved it to a better location in terms of lighting. Before it was standing between 3-4 meters away from a southern window but to the side. So it didn’t get that much light. Now it is in my kitchen 2m from a eastern window with lots of indirect sunlight instead. It also now has a mosspole(?) to climb on.
One other thing was that 2 air roots was getting soft and mushy. I had 3, all about 4-5cm, and the 2 top most roots was soft and mushy while the lowest one was firm and more root-like. I will now leave it alone and just give mist it a couple times a day. But I am really concerned for it.
I really did mess up this spring when I planted a lot of herbs. To big pots to fast, not adjusting the drainage for the plants, combining plants that want dry and wet in the same pot, no trimming to make them bushy, no nutrients and way to packed soil. Can’t even stick my finger into the pot to check the moisture.

You say it's beneficial to remove something like 20% of the roots when repotting then you show a severely potbound plant and claim you prefer not to loosen its roots that have completely encircled themselves because you are afraid of injuring them. Maybe there is some contradiction over there? One could say this is exactly the case where it might be beneficial to remove some roots if it helps loosen them.
Thank you for the video - some good advises on the repotting time and the growing period. However- it would be more helpful if you show the roots cutting technique- many people would appreciate that. Also - there are a few plants that fo not require watering straight after repotting, as they need to get their roots settled first, such as Crassula Ovata and few others, this could be good to mention. And lastly - I do appreciate that this is business- but really - how many times can you recommend your other videos through you presentation? Just link them all in the description box and people will see. As well as asking for subscription, likes and shares - it was done no less than 6-7 times throughout the video, I guess once is enough - utbis very distracting. Could be also good if you interact with your viewers and those who visit your Instagram. Normally - this is what brings your subscribers in. Thank you for the video.
