as a surface fan since 2012, your channel truly has become a comfort channel for me. thanks for the content!
ALL I WANNA DO IS ROTATE THE DAMN PHOTOSHOP CANVAS WITH THIS THING WHY IS THAT SO HARD
I do wonder if adding a screen to the front of it (perhaps a touchscreen with a pressure sensor behind the screen) would be an improvement
Do you have any video where you demo this or just audio book review?
Microsoft knows only two modes of development: stupid, and user-hostile. This one is both unfortunately, but there is hope (see below.) I've been staring at my Surface Dial for years not using it because having it do keystrokes only is silly and almost completely useless. It's mind-boggling how difficult they've made it to just get access to the raw messages (press, rotate left/right.) It's trivial to do in Linux with the right driver. If they made that easier, people could and would run with writing apps for this thing, and it would absolutely fly off the shelves. At the moment though, I'm taking advantage of the sale price as I've finally found some use for it.
As I have a Raspberry Pi display on my desk anyways, I ended up connecting the dial to it, and programming my own sort of "menu" selection (hold to open menu with haptic feedback, rotate to select mode.) I then use the current mode and direction of rotation to decide what to do, including sending OSC commands to my computer to control my audio interface, sending commands to home assistant to control lights, sending a command to Spotify to control volume or skip to the next track, etc...
As the price has dropped because M$ is stupid, I'll be picking up a few more of these dials to have around the house. It's unfortunate that an external device like a Pi is needed to get it to do what it should have done in the first place, but I'm happy to finally be using it as I had imagined.
I just bought it. Took me very little effort to create a custom action to scrub through video on Davinci Resolve.
Some time ago I create a software named Elephant, is for Durface Dial.
That's awesome! I'll check it out! Looks to be focused on music production, which I unfortunately have no experience in, but glad someone could breathe some life into it!
@@innoiso Elephant is amazing. Makes the Surface Dial everything Microsoft should have ar the time.
Brush Seize in Photoshop dosn't work anymore. Threw it into the bin.
I'm planning on getting this for programming as part of my emerging tech uni module - I want to intergrate it for Game Engine rendering states and similar
That's awesome! Such a cool use case
@@innoiso To use it, I'd have to create a hook between a UWP Application that runs alongside the non-UWP device. Microsoft does not expose inputs for the Surface Dial to native Desktop Applications, though for what reason I do not know.
Really nice video, thank you, good man! I hope your video helps prompt Microsoft to release a Surface Dial 2 offering better haptic especially for audio.
Thank you! That would be great to see!
I bought this a while back thinking it would help with all my creative apps (Premiere, Photoshop, After Effects, etc) and I was disappointed pretty quickly. I ended up buying a Tourbox and haven't lokoed back.
the stupid vlogger could have updated this content at least. Adobe says it's no longer supporting this device.
@@dyllangavinsucks You didn't have to call the man stupid.
@@jamessummers5936 you can tell this type vloggers are just here for monitization. I know a lot of vloggers who are passionate and responsible enough to update their vlog descriptions if there are relevant updates to the topic moreso if the updates are spoonfed in the comments.
Was hoping to see if, now that it ca be bought cheaper, there was some kind of great use for this, but the video confirmed that since I don't draw (and the rare times I edit videos I do it on lumafusion) I have no real use for this...
The radial menu is cool, but other than that it's not different from any other wheel you could get. And the delay in vibration is very distracting
Does it work on Mac?
Unfortunately no
Why wouldn't I just use the wheel in my mouse?
Some of us don't use mice as pens
we disigned a new product that may fit your needs, but don't know how to upload pics.
