It's hard to tell from the video because I can't see the screen of the machine, but it sure looks like you have turned off ferrous limits, which will make the machine call literally every target iron. Ferrous limits are not the same as FE and FE2 settings on the Equinox where having them at 0 is 'wide open'. Ferrous limits do not work the same way the FeCo graph works on the CTX 3030. Again, it's hard to see, so if I am incorrect on my assumption, please disregard this, but it sure seems to me that the detector is configured to assign a non-ferrous tone to all object.
Truly is amazing that every setting or change it still hits hard on iron even at 90 degree angles. Don’t take long to figure out that the machine hits way too hard on iron. And this was an honest first time out review as I stated that I only had 4 hours on it. As well as me demonstrating how it hits compared to the ctx. And others as well I learned have the same issue. For now this machine in my hunting conditions is not for me so far.
Great and honest video. After watching a number of videos from UK detectorists I came away with a strong belief that they were all dealers trying to sell a product. I recently tested a forty year old detector. It went extremely deep, far deeper than most modern detectors. It was simple to use and it lacked the annoying and in my opinion useless target ID numbers that so many detectorists religiously use to reject good targets. Just because a detector is the latest model is not a valid reason to buy it. The detector I tested was an old Nautilus, it really kicked ass but it's owner refused to sell it to me!
That is why I dont even detect here anymore. The sponsors for some of these companies buy views every upload to try and sell more detectors. The guys metal detecting here with the MOST subscribers can NEVER show anything income related. Ever wonder why nobody ever shows what they make here Dave? All those 100,000 plus subscriber metal detecting channels.........? None of them are making anything. And not 1 of them can show their RPM and monthly income. It would reveal them as frauds. Find one Metal Detecting channel here with 100k subs that will honestly show their income monthly.....................WONT HAPPEN
I am sticking with my Equinox 800 for now. You might like the Manticore better in the water, I hear it is better on deep and small gold. I think it is only marginally better from Equinox in performance. Equinox with big coil gets plenty of deep targets and does not leave much behind.
I agree Minelab has marketed this manticore. I sold mine after a few months and started working with the Deus 2. The CTX is a great machine but it's very heavy after swinging it for hrs. The Equinox is a fine machine as well other than it calls gold iron sometimes. If you're looking for the best preforming machine available The XP DEUS II is the one. XP WORKED FOR MANY YEARS PERFECTING THE DEUS II AND MAN DID THEY SUCCEED. By the way I've spent over 1,000 hrs with the D 2 and I'm just a simple country boy from North Carolina. I'm not getting paid a red cent to say this.
UK here with 40+ years of detecting under my belt. 😀. I am in a metal detecting club here and no word of a lie I have just upgraded to a new machine to me ( actually 2nd hand ) from my old Minelab Explorer II ( I purchased this machine brand new in 2005 ). Awesome machine but just to heavy for me now. 😌. Anyhow my new machine is a Minelab Equinox 800 and it has served me well in the 10 trips I have used it and iron doesn't seem to be a problem. 🙂. Now to the Manticore 🤔only 1 club member has one and yes he is finding things with it but nothing more that the Equinox and Deus users are finding. 😆. The concensus is that the Manticore is no better than the Equinox. 🤔. I will add that at least 3 Equinox uers in the club run them wide open and use the sounds to ignore iron. I have discrimination on because just getting to know the machine. Nobody else in my club is even thinking of getting a Manticore, they are happy with the Equinox and Deus. 🙂. Last point I unsubscribed from several UK detecting channels become yes they are full of bs and they are desperate for subs and clicks they have to constantly try beating other channels to better finds it makes me sick. 🤮. I have a very good collection and go detecting nearly every Sunday but I don't find good stuff every time far from it but miraculously all the UK you tube channels seam to manage good finds every trip 🤔. Keep up the good work, I like your no bs honesty. 🙂.
I felt exactly the same way as you do concerning the iron falsing for the first three days I used the Manticore. I was used to my XP Dues. My XP Dues is easier to use but not better. The Manticore can be exhausting because you need to listen in all metal and use your 2D screen. If you do not want to look at the 2D screen then you are correct that the Manticore is not the detector you want. To be successful with the Manticore I had to forget everything I previously knew about tones and VDI. Once I made these adjustments I cannot argue with the results. I dig zero iron in high trash and high mineralized soil. In fact I’m bummed that I cannot even find cool iron targets such as axe heads and horseshoes.
Its not easy switching to a new machine, but I have seen a lot of manticore users complaining about the iron falsing issues. Im happy I got the D2. XP updated quickly and I feel pretty dialed in with it. Best of luck to you!
As a day 1 user if the D2, nothing compares. Yes im a beach hunter minimal land. But i had to get rid of the manticore. I had to hunt soooo slow with it because nothing EVER sounded clear. I pulled 4 rings yesterday on the shoreline with a guy using his equinox and checked his holes. 10k ring and left it behind. D2 rung quick and clean. Nothing else needs to be said.
@@cappc12 I’m noticing the same shit. Took it to an old swimming site in the river and even the clear hits on 22 shell casings sounded like crap. Dug a ton of false signals, feel like I’m missing shit compared to the ctx. Tried beach low , deep general , nothing seems to help it. They put too much horsepower in it without upgrading the weak links like falsing.
Love the honest analysis even at 4 hours. I also ran the CTX exclusively for 6 years and had ALOT of success with it in areas that are absolutely terribly infested with iron AND modern trash. Last October I went to the Deus2 and was BLOWN AWAY. I didn’t believe the XP machine was going to compete with FBS2 but it did does, and more. I’ve seen a lot of your videos over the years and believe the D2 would fit your hunting, it’s unbelievable.
I got tired of waiting nearly 4 months for minelab to send my dealer the Manticores that they ordered. PISS PORE customer/small dealer service. They bent over for the big box stores. Thanks for your honest review.
I feel your pain. Hopefully time or maybe an update will help. Time and patience are what I'm counting on right now. You are right about some UA-camrs, not all. It's hard to figure out the truth with a lot of them.
When I first got mine I hated it, after you figure out what it's telling you you will love it. Start with factory settings and learn it, Then you can start to make small changes. The speed is awesome, cant believe the separation. Everyone that I know that got the Manticore started the the same way, just take time to learn it before you get rid of it. Us the 2d to check where the marking is at if it's not on the center of the middle line it's usually iron or Ferris metal. Where it is at to the left or right is where it corresponds to the VDI. Most of the time it will appear as a dot but if is straight up and down in the ground it will show up as a line. If it's blotchy or all over the place it maybe jewelry but the main thing is the tone. I don't recommend running with the horseshoe on all the time, when you get the target pin pointed then go over it with the the horseshoe on if you hear grunts directly over the target it's trash the manticore will almost always differentiate between close targets. You should hear a clear signal over the target and hear the grunt to the side. Also the Manticore will lock on to real targets if it's gust a blip and doesn't come back its falsing. When a target is not Ferris it will appear above and below the line on 2 D and I mean it could floating on top of it and be a nail. IF your looking for non-feris targets you need to open up where they show up on the 2D. Remember to do a continuous noise cancel holding down the Noise cancel button while it runs through cycles until the number stays the same. I've been watching you for years you'll get this, then you can decide to keep it or not. Happy Hunting
Thanks for the reply. But unfortunately when I’m in waist deep water the machine is underwater as well and was hoping to not having to look at the screen when detecting as little as possible. The target trace is basically the same instance as the ctx except the ctx seems more defined in iron.
I have CTX, Manticore, Deus 2, Legend, Sovereign, CZ21, Vanquish 540... and I agree. Deus 2, Legend, and Manticore false way too much on Iron, constantly have to stop to check iron falsing. CTX (and CZ21/Sovereign) is staying, the rest getting sold. They are sacrificing target id accuracy for extra sensitivity, and that is a bad move.
They don't false more. They're just very powerful..........with great power comes responsibility. YOU as the user are responsible for using the available options to get the machine running the way you want. I can tell you from my 15 years of experience.........if you're trying to find masked targets but won't accept anything but total silence on iron(especially old square nails) you're leaving a lot behind. More work..........more finds.
Very well put together, honest and to the point video. I'm so tired of all the UA-camrs that drink the Minelab Kool-Aid or whatever manufacturers Kool-Aid that buys them their machine or more behind-the-scenes perks going on and on about the awesomeness of the machine. Some people sell themselves and their word for next to nothing I guess. I, like you have been swinging the 30-30 exclusively for 6 years now. I received my manticore in early January I put down my CTX for the first time and started using the machine exclusively. It constantly gives non-ferrous multi-directional Center tone pinpoint must dig tones. I've seen the Minelab reps calling the Manticore "deadly accurate" it's not even close. I got lucky and was able to return my manticore for a full refund. The machine is literally a joke. Thanks to this experience now if they do come out with a 30-30 replacement you best believe I'm not jumping on that bandwagon anytime soon because I can't trust Minelab based on this piece of crap. I wasn't going to wait on an update based on the fact that Minelab still hasn't acknowledged any of the complaints with the machine. You've got the UK UA-camr Kool-Aid drinkers saying that Minelab told them they were doing an update. I want to know minelabs answer to why they used those guys as puppets to talk about an update they haven't even acknowledge the need for. I'm back with my 30-30 full-time and I'm happy detecting once again. Happy hunting and thanks again for the honest video.
Manticore is a beast I don’t have a problem with my and you can be on the wrong settings or yours that you bought could be broken somewhere my suggestion is sending it to Minelab they will fix it for you
Great and honest video. Thanks! I have used a nox 800 for years and just sold it. Bought a 600 for the free 15” coil. I would have bought a 700 if it came with the free coil as the new shaft and better water proofing would have been nice… would love to get a ctx it’s a beast!
Talk with Frank Lopergolo from Detect America on it. He was a doubter but now lives the Manticore. You have to rethink the entire thing. You can't run it hot. Frank and a few other guys have been working on setups and it is mind blowing when set right. As soon as you figure it out you will get it.
To go from 8 years to using the CTX to 4 hours on the Manticore, it’s nowonder you hate it… I upgraded from the Equinox 800 to the Manticore.. kept it basic… all metal mode… general all terrain…. after 70+ hours I love it
I agree, here in the UK I've used the Manticore 6 times upgraded from the Nox 800...it's is a better machine, deeper and more sensitive, the screen is the only thing that is taking a bit of getting used to, I'm finding small hammereds at least 2" deeper, the EMI reduction is superb...I love it! Steve
Still have my CTX and love it did purchase the D2 when it came out and love it also had to tweek a couple things like the lower shaft to a carbon fiber and a control case I had 3d printed out. It's a awesome piece of equipment no hype and you would be impressed 👍 ATB🦀
On the heels of MY previous, and less than professional comments,... I'm going to man-up here and say that I need to spend more time with the Manticore. I'm also going to say that I regret posting my negative comments about the Manticore and/or Minelab. Why the change of tune? Well, partly because I've been reading Dankowski's 'Manticore: Data & Performance' forum. It's great! In conclusion I'll say this: 1). This is a sophisticated machine with tremendous potential. 2). I'm a novice (very clear to me now), with a lot to learn about detecting... and detectors... AND the Manticore. 3). The more I learn and use the Manticore, the more I like it. Over and out!
I've owned a Legend for 1.5yrs. A $500 machine. Some folks badmouth it, but I love it! Not perfect, but, less Iron falsing, and better in EMI. Nokta listens to customers and modifies code often. Nevertheless, I decided to buy a top-of-the-line Manticore 2 mo ago. I do have good things to say about this machine. Iron Falsing is not on the list... neither is EMI. "Lower the sensitivity" some folks say. To what? 16, 17? That doesn't sit well w/me. Then there's the new "Stabiliser"..(I assume that feature was added after release of this vid). Does it reduce falsing? I've played around with it and I say no!. It simply modifies or "modulates" the tone....the non-ferrous tone! And frankly, I could live with the fact that I'm getting a NF tone for a large iron nail, but, when is shows up directly on the NF line with a friggin VDI of 90!!? For all you D2 owners out there, does your D2 do that?... and if so, how often? Minelab needs to get their thumb out of their ass and fix this! Meanwhile, I am looking forward to the release the Legend 2.0 🙂. And yes, there are MANY popular, likeable, money-grubbing Y-tubers out there of whom I trusted when I did my Manticore research. My bad! They should all get a job an MSNBC.
Like you, I'm a beach hunter in Tampa Bay. And I know exactly what my CTX is telling me all the time without having to look at the screen. Thanks for calling out all the UA-cam BS artists. The Influencers seem to think that were not onto their Bullshit.
Thanks for the video and honest opinion. If you decide to get rid of it, let me know. Maybe we can work a deal with my CTX for it. Love my CTX, but as I get older and the arthrits starts setting in, the weight is sometimes an issue. Plus, I love the idea of the super fast recovery, might breathe new life into the trashy areas I cant hunt with the CTX because of it being too slow with a carpet of pull tabs above the good old targets below.
4:28….It’s difficult to see your level of Ferrous limits on your screen because you’re in horseshoe (all metal) mode and the ferrous limits regions will be faded out in horseshoe mode.…. Your ferrous limits (upper and lower) settings on the Manticore will determine how much/little you hear the iron targets. You can’t have a “wide open” screen on the Manticore or iron will sound like a non-ferrous target. Remove all your prior knowledge regarding your need to have a wide open screen to maximize depth. That’s not true with these digital VLF machines…you could mask out over 80% of your VDI numbers and you’ll still be able to detect a quarter at the same depth as you can a wide open screen, as long as you don’t mask out the vdi #’s your quarter is producing at any depth.
ok here are my 2 cents. im a ctx user and a full time beach metal detectorist on south florida beaches. ive been using the ctx on the beach for the last 6 years, 4-7 hours a day and 5-8 times a week...a lot. i got my manticore on late january, ive never used the ctx again. the manticore gets deeper on wet sand, and salt water hunting except the surf were is still too unstable and theres no way in hell to do more than 19 sensitivity in the surf, wet sand you can go 23-24 if the water is quiet, i managed to do 22 in deep water and ignoring all falsing and going for the solid sounds, theres an iron falsing issue for sure, theres a sensitivity issue on the beach for sure too, the manti has up to 35 sensitivity for those who still dont know and down here you cant go up than 22 in water, theres no auto ground balance in any beach mode(another big issue). Minelab has to address those probs with the manti. A big FO to all but a few metal detecting channels on youtube that never said those thing when testing the machine, i found super weird when no one showed the machine on salt water and those early testers were putting a little gold chain and a earring and detecting it with the sensitivity cranked to 30 on wet sand, try that trick with the normal 19 sensitivity and youll see the results. The Ctx is the best overall beach metal detector. manticore is going to be a good replacement for the ctx crown on the beach, its giving me a lot of gold but i cant say all the gold i got wouldnt be caught by the ctx, its a lighter and solid machine, there are issues(important ones) to address on a software update if they ever release one, dont forget they never did with the ctx. Happy hunting.
Me also! I was very unimpressed with the Manticore coming from owning the CTX. I was also use to running a full open screen and didn’t want to run decriminalisation in fear of missing signals. As soon as I started to use discrimination it was a total game changer! I’m now finding more gold and silver jewellery, Australian pennies and Australian silver coins then ever before. I’m sure the more I get to know the machine, the more my finds will increase. I absolutely love the Manticore now! It’s Awsome, I’m actually thinking of selling my CTX as I don’t seem to want to use it now, I never thought I would say that. No matter how experienced you are in the hobby, you need to use this machine for at least a couple of months before you can write it off. That’s just my opinion. I also have a feeling Minelab will eventually do a update on the Manticore to tidy up any glitches this machine might have. This will make me fall in love with the machine even more! I’m not sponsored, I’m not a “fanboy” I have no reason to lie about this machine as I don’t do Metal detecting videos either. This is just my honest observation and opinion.
@@hiluxyota7200 hey mate, no worries! My settings are pretty basic, I’m switching between Beach Deep and beach low conductors. Beach deep hits some super deep targets on a high sensitivity. Beach deep works better then low conductors in the water as it runs more quiet. I just got back from another water hunt using this and pulled a deep silver ring and another chunky stainless men’s ring in a really short period of time. It’s much easier to swing in the water due to the weight difference. I’m running my recovery speed at 4, discrimination pattern is custom, ferrous limit is set at preset, ferrous tones is set at Ferrous Volume, Ground balance I run tracking on, Full Volume ( I don’t want to miss anything!) Audio Theme is set at Depth and obviously frequency is set at Multi IQ. I was using the full 35 sensitivity today on a busy beach with hardly any issues! However, I mostly run my sensitivity at 23 as it’s all this machine needs! Sometimes I’ll go as high as 29 for the super deep targets! Don’t forget to long press the noise cancel! I count to 14 like most people are saying. I hope this helps mate! Don’t loose hope just yet. I know how you feel spending so much money on another machine! The hype was all there at the start and that’s why I took the plunge too. You’ll end up loving this machine bro! Best of luck with it and I’m looking forward to seeing your future videos killing it with the Manticore!
@@hiluxyota7200 im good friends with your pal mark sinkman. hes impressed with my coin recoveries and you know it takes alot for him to comment on your finds lol i pulled over 5000 siver coins in 11 years with the etrac but im going back to all spots I POUNDED with the etrac and ipulled 300 silver since march 4th no joke. the manticore brings sites back to life. my name is JOE
I was ready to throw my manticore in the trash after I got it coming from nox 800. I had to play with The sounds to figure out what works for me. I did a test garden with 11 coins all but one with nails in the hole. After that I quit paying attention as much to the 2D screen and I don’t turn on targets as much now. The nox couldn’t hit 4 of the targets. One is a silver dime at 13 1/2 inches. Seems the deeper the iron is the more it sounds like a good target. After I did the garden and saw how bad square nails mess up good targets I went back to old spot and dug every decent sounding target. 28 square nails and one large cent that day. I really hope they come up with a good update. But most of the time now i usually know it’s a nail and not a coin. Had it for three months now.
On recommendations and such, I did purchase an equinox 800 after they have been out for a while and got rid of the bugs, so I was on generation 2. I will say that I sold my 800 after two years due to the excessive noise. That is what I call it, noise. Emi and iron falsing made it unbearable. Although I was able to quiet it down, the machine was still a pain in the ass. Mind you, I came from an Etrac and that thing is amazing, but then I purchased the CTX, and just switch between the two machines depending on the weight and how I'm feeling that day. Both of my machines are very similar obviously but again, the CTX is the Cadillac of the two. A friend of mine purchased the Manticore and has had nothing but connection issues and such with the coil. The company he purchased through is giving him static about him doing something wrong, but this guy is very anal about putting his machines together, so I'm sure he was very careful. Now, he has to deal with Minelab. What I have seen with the machine and watching Detect NYC UA-cam channel,, he has gone back to the Equinox for the most part but still uses the Manticore now and then. He was excited in the beginning, but that excitement wore off kind of like a shiny new car, all shiny in the beginning but Fades over time. Good luck to Minelab. I do not see how they can improve upon the CTX other than making it faster. If they did that, I would purchase that machine in a heartbeat.
Once you get your head round the 2d screen you can set tones and ferrous tones accordingly so you can hear the iron as well as non ferrous targets....and no need to use any vertical disc pattern at all...as for those headphones they are shite...I have an original CTX from day 1...and it took me longer than 3 hours to get use to it.....
Am in UK, had my name down for one when they first hit the screen, but bumped into a tester one morning using one, when I enquired about it his exact words were "it's nowhere near ready" and from what I've seen its still not.
I have a 900 and I had a similar problem but if you adjust the iron bias up so it isn’t as sensitive to iron it works well then, totally agree with the utubers kissing ass about the machine 👍
Besides the cursing I agree with you 1000% the CTX is still the champ. I’ve been the Nail Digging King since swinging the Manticore. The Manticore I hear has a MASSIVE learning curve, which I don’t understand why, Minelab is going backwards not forwards, I wouldn’t be surprised if Minelab loses the lead with Nokta coming out.
Thats right. Fully grown people got weak and demanded a 2k broomstick with usb cable. Abandoned the future of the more sofistikerad but heavier square wave machine in favor for the much older common sine wave mashine. Madness.
I have found targets that the 800 has missed. I think you will find you need to look at the screen that’s why you have paid extra for it. It is very sensitive as I can no longer detect with steel cap boots on lol 😆. Someone in Australia runs there’s in all metal mode this could also be setup in a profile to mimic the ctx
The ctx has the same display and I never use it. In waist deep water the machine is under water so looking at a screen is not an option. The sounds are not as smooth as the ctx. I think they put too much horsepower in it without upgrading the weak links. Like putting a thousand horsepower engine in a half ton mud truck using the stock Dana 44 front axle. And pulling a couple plug wires off will still run like turning the sensitivity way down but it’s not at its full performance. This manticore has certain issues that only an update will fix.
I’m going to have to play with it in a non iron infested site and get the tones the way I want them before I hit an iron site again. Yes emi didn’t seem much better than the ctx. What is your Ferrus numbers set at and are you in normal or enhanced. Seems like the enhanced setting makes everything sound even worse.
@@hiluxyota7200 I’m in normal the machine does not like EMI in no discrimination mode goes nuts I always ran my equinox 800 no discrimination way I like to detect I have Mede some killer finds with mine got a 1847 seated half dime on my river spot that’s been hammered with a bunch of 800’s
Im using an equinox 900 and experiencing a little of the same. I can't get over seeing the manticore as a 900 with a different screen. Double the price but certainly nowhere near double the performance of the 900.
The Equinox Falses A lot on Iron Too And People never complain blaming the User Now Deus 2 has an update And all the falsing comes out I been dealing whit this specially on minerlized ground gets worst
My Equinox 800 was a big disappointment coils Box leakage, you name it it was in the shop more than in the field while I was waiting for it to get fixed I purchased the legend to hold me over and I'll be damned a property that I had pounded over and over with the equinox the legend pulled a Seated dime almost 10in down a friend let me use the Manticore for a couple of weeks definitely better than the 800 but I'm not really impressed at this point specially for the money
CTX 3030, E-trac, Explorer (SE), Safari, Excalibur series, Sovereign series and so on belongs to BBS/FSB/FSB2 breed of modern machines using very complicated square waves. Much newer and more complicated and heavier. Manticore is, like Nox, a classic and much older type sine wave mashine but can switch frequencies and has inherited the faults that this machine type has. Pushed to hard or too deep will always ID iron. It is in its DNA. Demands for a lighter machine had consequences.
Man that is a good explanation you’re right everybody try to look good on UA-cam and you are really honest. I really appreciate what you’re doing in your video I was ready to buy one but now I see this you open my eyes so I will look at my other options. Thank you.
So was myself. Nothing but positive reviews and videos so I ordered it. Yes I only have 4 hours of field time but I don’t think I need any more than that to know that it has an iron false issue. I’m going to go back to the same site and try a couple other settings and video it. It looks like this machine is too overpowered and didn’t make up for it in other features in the machine.
I agree with you buddy. These promoters don’t care about our hard earned money we make. They will say whatever just to get themselves 💰 UA-cam is the new fake media 😂
I'm looking to get my first detector machine in a couple weeks from detector warehouse. What are your thoughts on the Garrett AT Pro for a first machine? I've thought of the Garrett ACE 400 as well. Thoughts anyone ??
@@michaelhargis7036 don't get the Simplex +and it's a EMI Magnet and from the owner of one and the Tone's of the Simplex are A little bit Tinney and will eventually get tired of it, like I have and go look at the Minelab X-TERRA Pro and as soon as I can get the money for the Minelab X-TERRA Pro and the X-Terra Pro is adjustable and your stuck with the Simplex and what they think you need to go detecting and it's cheaper than the Simplex+ than what I paid for the Simplex At the time and I wished that I would have saved my money for anything Minelab and If you can get yourself to a store and try them out before you just trust anyone you haven't met and you will have to live with your decision to buy whichever detector and but do go to the store and try them out for yourself and being that I'm looking to get rid of the Simplex and get a Minelab X-TERRA Pro Soon but I haven't the money for it yet but at $269. It's ALOT cheaper than the Simplex +and I have a Permission that I can't use the Simplex and I have to send a video of the EMI Problem with the Simplex to Notka Macro Headquarters And to the Tech Center here in the States also I will post it on my UA-cam Channel but it will be a few weeks before I can get back to that permission and make the video, but look at anything Minelab...... From a Simplex + Owner....
And forget anything from Garrett as far as Metal Detector but the Garrett Carrot is a good Pinpointer and also the XP 4 Pinpointer from what I have watched other's using but I have the Garrett Carrot and but go to the Detecting Stores and try Everything Out Before you make your own decisions to Buying and Also I have a Garrett GTI 2500 that is Collecting ALOT of Dust and very low hours and Still looks New, cause I I haven't used it that much and Anything Garrett love's iron And Trash And you will be digging up ALOT of it and The Minelab X-TERRA Pro is Cheaper than the Garrett AT Series Detector's and Ace Series Detector's.... And not My opinion but User Facts and I will be getting a Minelab X-TERRA Pro Soon....
I've been running a used 800 (with the housing completely inundated with water twice from river hunts, which I fixed) for the last 4 years and it separates iron from non ferrous pretty good. It's a tough call, but it works half the time. I know your frustration. I have friends with CTX's and those machines are the Cadillac's. It seemed to me that Minelab rushed the development of both the 900 and the Manticore to grab market share in lieu of the XP II, And, I own a XP I, to clarify my statement. But you and I live in ground that is LOADED with iron. I think Minelab just doesn't understand that. I hope your quest is fulfilled by Minelab and I am simply holding my cards until I see more than just hype.
Stop your bitching and use the machine. Yes, it falses more iron but it also hits tons more targets (sideways and masked), has less EMI and goes deeper with lower sensitivity. I've dug 119 silver coins and 2 gold rings with it since March 16th all in parks I used my Equinox 800 in. I dig hundreds of silver per year and this is the best machine I have ever used.
The emi doesn’t seem much different at all compared to the ctx. Maybe a little more quiet but not much of a difference. This machine just has a falsing issue plain and simple way more than the ctx. It’s just not for me or the types of iron infested places and rivers I hunt it.
@@pomiller1972 was in general mode. Was in normal and enhanced profile simple didn’t try the medium upper ferrus 10 lower 5 but mostly in all metal. Had the sens at 19 and 23 Recovery at 6 or 7. @@hiluxyota7200 try running recovery at 4 and 5. much better, try sens from 23 to 29. just things i picked up. You can also set your iron tone to something you like better than what you have now. It actually sounds like its not on at all.
@@hiluxyota7200 I find lowering the sensitivity and recovery speed helps in iron infested places and swinging slow. Like 18 and 4 and noise cancel often. The separation is what Manticore does best. Pulled a capped bust half dime surrounded by iron and bottle caps a few weeks ago with those settings in a city park.
The Equinox 800 is notoriously bad for this issue, regardless of updates performed. In fact, the last update they did made it worse, and many of us reverted back to the previous update. Many of us made the necessary adjustments and the machine has been decent to most of us since. With the Manticore, what will happen is people will be making their adjustments as well, and finding their own programmatic settings, and in doing so, this will make it near impossible for anyone to really run this machine out of the box without issues. The biggest challenge I'm finding is that the VDI interpretation is all over the place with certain metals that should be ringing in at a higher numeric value, and this makes adjusting according to VDI problematic. Here in Canada, we have Large Cents (LC's) that are made of copper, bronze and in some instances a brass mixture, and if yoiu try to discriminate, you have to be careful that you don't exclude those made of bronze, becuase they ring in unusually low (Equnox had them ring in at 18, while our other LC's rang in the 30's). Some of them make no sense. For instance, I found a silver ring that rang in at 53 on the Manticore. Assigniing higher elevations in pitch on non-ferrous becomes highly impractical. As an example, the "Silver Coin" programs being pushed on UA-cam are usually working with ranges of 70-100 on the Manticore, and discriminates out the entire 40-69 ranges. So unless you alter those ranges to suit relics, coins and certain jewellery, you will miss stuff. This is one way to solve the way this machine interprets square nails, but it's not ideal as I've described above. And more importantly, this is also why people will find a way to make it work for them, and suggest anyone with problems suck it up and program it according to their requirements. This is the answer you will especially hear from any ML cheerleaders. Now as a CTX owner myself, this is eerily reminiscent of the amount of copper/pennies you had to dig to chase silver - except, everything developed by Minelab after the CTX became more fixated on old forged, rusted iron, and including it in the high non-ferrous pitch ranges. It was frustrating back then when people would say the CTX is a great machine for pennies (and if you weren't subject to this, you didn't own it like I did from the very beginning). The CTX has aged gracefully, and it can be frustrating at the beginning, but I can also say rather confidently that as a relic hunter, other machines have had this issue, and I actually can identify old forged iron with my AT Pro best, which is great when I'm discerning modern forged axes from trade axes. And I realize this is impractical to someone that doesn't hunt relics, but I'd rather find a Biscayne trade axe over silver or gold any day of the week and twice on Sunday's, so I'm not hard on those machines for doing things a little differently for these reasons. With the ML generation of machines after the CTX, there's no reason for them to be ringing in modern rusted nails as high non-ferrous. I don't believe any update will solve this unless they completely reconfigure the VDI assignment according to metal signature, there's no reason for silver to be ringing in below mid-tone, or even in the 45-53 VDI range (our old 5 cent "fishies' ring in between 47-56 on the Manticore) - on any legacy metal detector that uses 100 as it's VDI range, ANY silver should ring in 70-100, not on the Manticore. Don't get me started on gold. Anyhow, I'm one of the people who has always been straight up about the equipment I buy and use, have a stop-by and check my last two vids on the Manticore. I will be running some tests on the Manticore against it's power claims in the near future, but in the meantime, as far as field tests, I want to get more hours on mine before I do a proper dress down of the issues I've encountered.
I hear ya. I never do reviews but I decided to give honest non biased opinions and thought through the experience of owning this machine. There definitely seems to be a false issue but time will tell how bad it will be once I start figuring out what works for me and the conditions I detect in. I noticed the same thing with the vdi setup. Everything is all over but I know I can adjust the sounds and move things around. In waist deep water the screen is always under water so going by sound is what I’m use to. Because looking at a screen is out of the question do me.
@@hiluxyota7200 that is the real key here. I spend my entire summer in water, and being able to work by sound is key, because the head is submerged, visualization is not an option. This is not going to be a machine you could adjust for that situation without making programming adjustments unfortunately.
Turn your sensitivity down. I run about 20. I leave iron on. I hated it when I first got it. I love it now. I hated my 800 when I first got it. It's definitely an adjustment going from a fbs to a multi frequency machine. It's definitely way better in emi than the 800.
I tried with the sensitivity also. It just seems to love iron it seems to me. I am going to play with it a little more in a non iron infested area first and get the tones set and dialed in first before I try it in iron again before I sell it or wrap it around a tree.
I know your a tone guy, but I believe the new 2D screen on the manicore would show the targets as iron. Hard to go to visuals when you have trained your ears
It is apparent you love the ctx . So use it that's great. There are too many out there that like the manticore and I guess all these people on UA-cam that like the Manticore are part of a damn conspiracy. 😄 oh and your vocabulary is something I would expect from a smart mouthed 16 year old. CTX is a great machine just heavy.
It still sucks in Iron. Hits hard on gold. Putting the range all the way to 100 was a mistake also. I’m not a coin shooter so vid and display is useless to me. Just like the ctx .. and I bet you voted for Biden!
Four hours on the machine and your saying it's no good. I felt the same way when I got my first Sovereign. After I learned it, I would never part with it even though it weights a ton. I still have it. I just can't see how you can make that judgement. Not a fair assessment at all. You couldn't figure it out so you say it's no good. Grrrr
And I come away from this machine, wondering what the hell is going on in the minds of people who designed it, tested it and started selling it? Were they deaf?
Minelab over sold their bullshit. Four new machines in less than 6 months. They can't keep up with demand. I'm about to sell my 900 and go back to the 800. -20 to 99 vdi numbers is insane. 😂😂
The problem is not with manticore, its with your personal preference!!!. The whole point of manticore is the target ID graph display.. its not the machines fault that YOU don't want to use the feature the whole detector was build for... its like buying a pickup truck and then you complain that is a long truck and you can't find parking and you don't care it has a bed in the back cause you're not using it!!! Duh!!!
You obviously are an amateur or a numbers guy who only is a hi toner looking for silver coins. Every machine should be able to read by sound. Since the machine is always underwater , what gold ring hunters do you know of who constantly looks at the display!!!! The ctx is a visual machine with the stupid 2 d display but how many times in 9 years have i used it ??? Zero. I have over 100 antique gold rings I pulled from iron in river sites. Not to mention modern gold from the local beaches. So yes you can use this manticore by sound. It does have an iron false issue. So have fun in the wood chips for coins
I sold all of my Equinox’s and bought the Nokta Legend and never looked back. I don’t care if it costs me 1500 dollars as long as the price reflects the performance. The Legend is killer my friend, check it out👍
It's hard to tell from the video because I can't see the screen of the machine, but it sure looks like you have turned off ferrous limits, which will make the machine call literally every target iron.
You have a WHOLE 4 HOURS!....Amazing alaylsis!
@@hiluxyota7200 I'll still take the 70 challenger
Find one Metal Detecting channel here with 100k subs that will honestly show their income monthly.....................WONT HAPPEN
conspiracy theories 😂😂😂
I am sticking with my Equinox 800 for now. You might like the Manticore better in the water, I hear it is better on deep and small gold. I think it is only marginally better from Equinox in performance. Equinox with big coil gets plenty of deep targets and does not leave much behind.
I want to get out with a mate to see if it is better than a 800 might save him some money 😂
So how do you run the machine? Thanks…
@@neilsbluesky8027 All terrain general, all metal, sensitivity 18-22.
I have had ctx since it came out 11 years ago , i love it so much , dont need no other machine
@@MrBottlecapBillI've never had my Deus 2 false on iron even with stock settings. The Equinox falses on gold calls it iron that is a fact.
Holy crap lol thanks. Now I feel better about holding on to my 1/2 ton Ctx. I still love to using it. :)
I like the follow up you did about this video. Thanks for the explanation, and good success on your following digs.
That thing will wear your back out and get you a killer bottle cap collection 😎⚡️🍀
False! If you know what you're doing you only have to dig a bottle cap, if you want to.
I agree wholeheartedly sir
Thank you for your honest opinion!!! I really appreciate it!!! God Bless!!!
I have the same thing with the 800 nox. Sqeaky iron that sounds so good. Hope it works out for you. Good luck
Steve
True words!
Thanks for vid.
Love an honest review
I said the same thing when I got it. I was a 10 year etrac vet hard. The manticore truly is unreal
@@jasonandrews4750 thank you. What are your settings for ferrus upper and lower. ? And what audio themes are you using
@@hiluxyota7200 hey mate, no worries! I was ready to throw my manticore in the trash after I got it coming from nox 800. I had to play with
The sounds to figure out what works for me.
Once you get your head round the 2d screen you can set tones and ferrous tones accordingly so you can hear the iron as well as non ferrous targets....and no need to use any vertical disc pattern at all...as for those headphones they
are shite...I have an original CTX from day 1...and it took me longer than 3 hours to get use to it.....
Am in UK, had my name down for one when they first hit the screen, but bumped into a tester one morning using one, when I enquired about it his exact words were "it's nowhere near ready" and from what I've seen its still not.
Omg, that's crazy on the iron. I've watched videos where the testers lived it out of the air but hated using it in actual sites.
Madness.
There definitely is a falsing issue and hopefully they will address it
Dam well good video bro 👏👏👏
Four hours?? I hated my 800 for more than the first four hours, much more.
Exactly...I wonder how long it took him to get use to the ctx...
Right on I also use the D2 which is a great machine
Well this is disappointing, Maybe you can customize the sounds profile to sound more grunty on iron without filtering it out
Im using an equinox 900 and experiencing a little of the same. I can't get over seeing the manticore as a 900 with a different screen. Double the price but certainly nowhere near double the performance of the 900.
So does the equinox nine hundred falses on nails big tide
Thanks man
I always wanted a at max but I would love to have any one of the good machines and I like the way you tell it how it is so plz do my friend
Buddy had the max and sold it and got another pro instead
The Equinox Falses A lot on Iron Too
And People never complain blaming the User
Now Deus 2 has an update
And all the falsing comes out
I been dealing whit this specially on minerlized ground gets worst
Had mine about a month. Dug a lot of iron. Way more than equinox. It will sniff out nickles tho. Hoping for a good update
Good to see someone not afraid to tell their honest opinion good and bad. Thumbs up my friend.
The Manticore is a mix between the equinox and the e-trac.... Not the CTX 3030. Good info though.
Thank you.
I am interested in it
So was myself.
I'm buying one for in the salt water and I'll keep my equinox for dirt
I agree with you buddy. These promoters don’t care about our hard earned money we make. They will say whatever just to get themselves 💰 UA-cam is the new fake media 😂
I'm looking to get my first detector machine in a couple weeks from detector warehouse. What are your thoughts on the Garrett AT Pro for a first machine? I've thought of the Garrett ACE 400 as well. Thoughts anyone ??
Simplex easy turn on and go. And better that at pro
@@dusty1498 thanks for your input. Simplex I've never heard of but will definitely look into it.
@@michaelhargis7036 No problem what kind of detecting are you planning to do? Old coins. Beaches for gold rings, old relics?
You try xp deus by any chance to compare
Love this video but the biggest issue is the BULLSHIT PRICE!!!!!
What kind of settings are you using?? I guess I just rely on numbers to much to dig a target
@@pomiller1972 was in general mode. Was in normal and enhanced profile simple didn’t try the medium upper ferrus 10 lower 5 but mostly in all metal. Had the sens at 19 and 23 Recovery at 6 or 7. Even dropped it down to 5. Ground Val 0 changed the channel several times and still hits hard on iron even at 90 degrees
Lol I was right there with you. First 3 or so hunts it was crap but I have it diled in now.
@@turdferg100 I'm having issues with it not locking in on good targets...idk
Nox800 is the best I’ve used
Need to see the 2 d screen
I know your a tone guy, but I believe the new 2D screen on the manicore would show the targets as iron. Hard to go to visuals when you have trained your ears
Good tell it how it is stuff anyone saying you got to do this that and the other toget it to work
Every deep coin I buried for testing shows deep iron on manticore !!! Not like ctx where show clean positive target !!
Deus II might fit you better for the speed you want
Oh boy...the fan boys are going to be upset with this video...
After 4 hours
900 is just as bad. Looking for a technique like the 7 method that worked with 800.
Grrrr
😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
User error
Probably wasn’t holding the mail the correct way , that’s why it wasn’t grunting on iron ….
And I come away from this machine, wondering what the hell is going on in the minds of people who designed it, tested it and started selling it? Were they deaf?
basic skills. use the whole detector.
You’re setting are not right
Thanks for sharing your opinion. I like how you tell it like it is!! No bull shit. Good luck with updates on that thing.
Happy hunting
Minelab over sold their bullshit. Four new machines in less than 6 months. They can't keep up with demand. I'm about to sell my 900 and go back to the 800. -20 to 99 vdi numbers is insane. 😂😂
I actually like the number spread but i didn't have an equinox before
The problem is not with manticore, its with your personal preference!!!.
