- The switching action on the ToughBuilt Scraper Utility Knife is a hoot to play with. Three positions of closed, knife, and scraper are all accessed by the sliding lever. I was really close to buying one. Proprietary blades were strike one. But the real thing that made me not purchase is how thick it is. It's way too thick and especially with the blade so close, you can't get into any tight spaces and have to hold the handle too perpendicular to the surface. Not great geometry for a scraper. I prefer to have a much flatter angle in general and often need to get into tight spaces with my scraper.
I absolutely love the idea and the mechanism, if they could make a 2.0 with standart utlity blades and change the geometry it could be an absolute winner.
Oh thank you.. I couldn't get the blade out. Im left handed and when i saw this i was in the middle of redecorating a room.. i love it ,as a lefty its perfect.. and now i know how to remove the blade.. 🎉

I bought one and immediately took it home to start unscrewing stuff. It's pretty well built on the inside, bit there's lots of wasted space and unnecessary material. I think this tool could more than easily be revised and made lighter/more compact. I will say though, my adhd self absolutely loves the mechanism and I'll often find myself just playing with it on the job
Interesting concept for sure, the switch from utility to scraper is like the tool world version of a fidget spinner haha! 👍
Might not know this, but the back side of the calipers are used for depth (measuring your blade offset)
I second another commenter here about the knipex cutix knife which comes stock with a Tajima blades
I love tools that require the same tool to open the packaging. I hope this appeases the UA-cam algorithm.
I bought one and found out about the proprietary blades when I tried to load one of my favorite Lennox blade in it. And the really bad thing is that I preferred to use my Gerber poxket utility knife to cut drywall.

I got this knife maybe a year ago. Kind of gimmicky and clunky but when doing paint project its a pretty useful tool.
It's not a gimmick if it actually works and it does just that it works!

Proprietary blades... boo hiss, boo hiss.
There really is no way around it with the standard blade design. When you think about it, the standard should change to this as there is no purpose for a solid blade, not to mention the material savings.
Then we could get rid of the old rectangular blade style completely.

Good thing I saw your comment, I had just ordered one on Amazon but as soon as I realized I had to use their special blade it was a deal breaker lol shame.
I have this and from use, my take is the blade removal is sketchy, the cleaning is abit of a pain, cause theres lots of crevices for gunk to get into, once the gunk gets in there, its not vey easy to clean.
I thought this looked pretty neat until you confirmed they are proprietary blades, thats deal breaker for me espescally because the scraping end I was thinking of using for work to scrap grease off equipment I was working on (I repair commercial food service equipment) and I would go through blades pretty quickly especally because pretty often when trying to get pannels off equipment you will dig into the grease and not realize your hitting a screw head hidden under it guess I'll just stick to my sharpened putty knife.
I have a variant of the Stanley 28-100 scraper and its held strong for years. By no means is it the best tool, but the high vis color makes it easy to spot in my top drawer.
You focused on the major weakness of this tool which is the reduced angle of attack. If you can't get the right angle of attack, it's not good for scraping, It's also bulky, seems like it's not a good combo of the two types of blades.
I think they outsmarted themselves with that one. 😂

I've seen ads for this, too, and I was curious. Glad this video exists. Not a tool I'd consider buying after seeing it in action.
BTW, a significant tool day today. I'm expecting a Mitutoyo tenth DTI with 40 micron resolution, a Starrett 57S sleeve, and a set of Eklind ball hex screwdriver style (SAE). Very excited for the DTI. I've been eyeing it for a while.

if there was an easy way to convert regular utility blades into these proprietary ones, or be able to use generic ones, id consider getting this, still hesitant with how thick it is though.
It's OK, will probably be playing with it more than you will use it. Scraper is great on hard surfaces.
The blades are proprietary and not very sharp. Works great as a scraper, not so much a knife.

The more heavy, clunky, badly designed utility knives I see, the more I appreciate what an elegant design classic the old Stanley 99E is, though the newest ones are greatly inferior due to penny-pinching manufacturing.

1/. Use standard blades not only oem’s
2/. Have onboard blade storage
you should check out the NT snap blade cutter, adam savage did a video on it saying it was his favorite knife because it has a blade magazine that reloads itself

using another utility knife to gain access to the desired newly acquired 'cooler' utility knife. - proving if it gets the job done its a contender in the tool world hahaha
also for scraping what about being able to extend it (like when it goes between positions) can it be held in that extended fashion with a lock somewhere or would it need to be actively held in the extended position?
t a drimmel with a metal cut off wheel and a simple tracing of the area onto a generic blade would not be hard to cut out an area and use your blade of choice
I broke mine cutting cardboard just a couple weeks after owning it. Part of the mechanism got caught on the cardboard as I was cutting. Spring popped out. Bummed - thought it was a good idea.
It should be able to be warrantied. Good to know. I cut a pile of boxes and noticed the mechanism needed some cleaning to keep working smoothly. But I've has that happen with others as well.
what were the changes of the olfa utility blades fitting the design? it might not be exactly proprietary as long as it has a center punch which asian blades or Olfa has in particular... weirdly enough the utility knives are different across regions huh
Check out thr knipex cutix utility knife. It's basically your olfa knife but with the option of having a rigid back on the blade. It also has blade storage on board.

Hey Doc, I have a question regards to tools maintenance. How do you keep them from rusting!!? I need your help thanks 🙏
Clean and oil regularly (I use 3 in 1 PTFE), always dry them if the get wet. Also just using them because sitting in a drawer without use they just sit there and corrode so if you are going to store tools unused for a prolonged period dry and oil them before putting them into storage, how bad they rust from sitting depends on where you live too. Hope that helps.
