- Utility blade knife sharpness test: blade edge integrity and frictional loss using cardboard, drywall, copper pipe and staple. Stanley, Stanley carbide, DeWalt Carbide, Milwaukee, Masterforce, Craftsman, Lenox, Husky, Kobalt, Hyper Tough, and Irwin tested. I highly recommend 2 blades, one for value and the other stands out as the best but it does cost the most.

Great Test.. Could you include maybe some of the Fiskar blades? I have the titanium blades from fiskar but I think they may be discontinued?
was wondering if you have ever used olfa utility blades
Like to see difference between dewalt regular vs their 3x, 5x, and 10x longer lasting blade.

This is great!
Can you please test and see if ceramic blades are better that traditional metal razor blades? They sell the “slice” brand ceramic blades on Amazon
I just picked up a 50 pack of Lenox carbide edge. I assume it would be comparable to the dewalt but only one way to find out. 🤙
Wonder when companies are going to start saying “ Project farm approved “ on packaging.

Don’t forget guys, this guy is always unsponsored, and spends a lot of money on each of these videos. He’s saving us money by making them so we should remember that this guy has a patreon
Thank you very much!
Yes, it is the main reason I love this channel
chris bro he spend at least 2days for a video of less than 800k meaning 800dollars. And he spend maybe half of it in cost. 200per day is not enough you should support.
Chris, Must be a Democrat. Someone helps us at their expense. They in turn make money from their hard work and dedication. Suddenly you’re upset because someone pointed out that he’s hard-working, dedicated to his goals and puts his own money into these tests. When we get off the couch and work, we have something bigger than success. We have significance..... whew that was the most aggressive comment I’ve ever written.
chris UA-camrs don’t make as much as you think. And even if he does make enough to cover the stuff he buys, what about the money for his efforts? You wouldn’t make someone work for you for free would you?
I'll bet the manufacturers of all the products you've tested, never dreamed there products would be scrutinized so thoroughly on UA-cam. It's great for the consumer. I hope you're being rewarded for all the hard work you put into everything you test. You deserve it.
Thanks!
But, that keeps them honest. You can't just say you're going to "last 10 times as long" or "our blades are 10 times as sharp" without Todd saying "we're going to test that"
Hello thanks for reviewing. I’m a drywaller and occassionally score metal studs. I’ve always bought husky or kobalt 2 for one packs and they’ll last me a year. I didn't think there was any significant difference in these, but after watching your vid, I see that there is. I went out and bought a huge pack of DeWalt blades. WOW - those things are durable!! Been using them for a drywall job, and I'm amazed how long they are lasting. Thanks so much for this one.
You are welcome! Thanks for sharing.
I usually buy these in 100 packs and it seems I go through a lot of them, because they just become frustrating (and dangerous!) after a short while of use. But I am down to the last 5 and thought "I'll check Project Farm" before buying my next 100 pack. You never fail! Thanks.
You are welcome!
so which one did you get?
I'm not sure why I watched this video, but I guess its because it's project farm. I still have about 30 blades left from the cheap blades that came with my blade handles. 30 blades last me 2 years...lol. Yep, I am addicted to this channel.
@@JKinLVN I use a lot of blades because in the work I do with utility knives I cut a lot of corrugated cardboard. I was interested in the economics of whether a more expensive blade may actually save me money.

As an engineer I can't appreciate enough your attention to details, custom test rigs and data compilation. Not to mention the time spent...
Great job as usual.

@@ProjectFarm do you test a number of blades though from each group? its hard to call it statistically significant data without a large sample size
I definitely appreciate the effort of his testing different thing, and his dedication to funding everything himself and being open with his results, now if the rest of the consumers of products followed his lead, the marketers of higher priced inferior products would have to make a choice... either put up, or shut up then shut their doors for good!
@@jacobwinters2593 You'd think that these companies would have quality control standards to make each batch of blades similar in quality and hardness. I'd call his data about as statistically significant as you can get without wasting hundreds of dollars to get a lower significance level. I'd probably avoid buying a certain brand if I knew they had poor enough quality control to warrant larger sample sizes in a test like this anyways.

Forgot to mention how I love and value your concise presentations. Max relevant info in the least amount of time. Priceless!!!

I have to say if you buy in bulk you SEVERELY drop the cost per blade though. I love the Irwin blades, and buy them in packs of 100...which ends up costing about 6-7 cents per blade.
Thanks for sharing.
Duwalt is better than Irwin. Irwin sucks. I wouldn’t care if I got them for 6 or 7 cents. I’d chuck them in the trash. Duwalt you can buy in bulk too, it’s a little more expensive but from my experience (I’m a contractor) you also won’t be changing them as often.
The real cost of the blades is walking around trying to find where the hell you have all your spare blades.
The blade is unbreakable and the cutting edge holds up. The value pack is the way to go
@@kevind1865 How true, how true!!
2:02 The Milwaukee says it has "carbides dispersed in a steel matrix" which is literally a description of high carbon steel, it's interesting how brands will use technical jargon to convince you that their product is somehow superior or better engineered
You'd hope that they mean carbides other than iron (cementite). But even that hope isn't much, as that again describes most alloys (e.g. Cr-V).
"Our cars come with adjustable windows!"...
@@T3sl4 In some cases certain types of carbides can do more harm than good if they are too large too. I've found a lot of cheap stainless steel won't hold an edge or even take a decent edge because the chromium/carbides are so coarse they chip out and leave a rough edge, or at least that is my understanding of what's happening at a microscopic level
You also have to think of heat treat. A steel can have perfectly adequate chemistry, but have a suboptimal heat treatment. This can cause many problems, including the issues you described. Chromium carbides are only one possible carbide, you also have vanadium, tungsten...none of them worth anything if the steel has a junk heat treatment!
As for utility blades...I have a 100 pack of the husky. They do the job. You can always sharpen them if you really want to get your money's worth!
@@T3sl4 I've heard of those, do they come with a door glass regulator or is it a separate purchase ?
@@TheBrewjo it's a separate purchase and good luck getting the door panel off without breaking all the fastener clips. We make sure to engineer them as single use, which can only be sources from the dealer at a cost of $15 each

The Milwaukee “iron carbide” blades... also known as steel
Thank you
Lmao
Hahaha the marketing is on fire
What?!? Steel is iron with a few percent carbon added?!???? LOL
I tried these the other day. Tbh, as far as "sharpness" goes, they were not as good as much cheaper brands, however they are definitely more durable.
I've been paying extra because I thought I was getting the best for almost a year at this point, I was paying even more mark-up just to buy them on Amazon at just over $1 a blade 🤡 I'll start getting DeWalt blades going forward
You can get the DeWalt carbides for $0.45 each at home Depot if you order a 50 count
Thanks for the feedback.
If you get the cheapest blades, you can swap them out faster and have a sharper blade at all times. In this test, cheap is the winner.
DeWalt it's okay for drywall I can cut like 30 sheets from each side of the blade ...
@@vipahman I think it really comes down to how much your using your blade. If you just have it around for once in a while type of thing then yea cheapest is best swap a new one out every time. If you have hundreds of feet of material to cut in a day then swapping a dull blade out every 2 minutes is going to be really irritating and you would rather have the 5x more costly blade that lasted longer.
That final test really shows it, the dull Dewalt is almost as sharp as the last place of the brand new blades. I'm gonna stick with Irwin personally, they rate right in the middle of the pack which is fine and they are incredibly cheap when you buy the 100 pack.
I watch these before I go to sleep, a majority of these brands don't exist in my country, but I'll still watch the video and leave a comment for the algorythm

This test is absolutely accurate. I am constantly using blades at work from cutting jackets and sheathing off of copper or fiber optic cables, to sharpening carpenter pencils. I have probably used every blade out there, I can honestly say that I have stuck with the new DeWalt Carbide due to me not having to change it out as often. I was impressed with the Milwaukee at first but I noticed the chipped edges came up a lot. Watching this video I was able to make accurate calls on which blades were going to outperform others and this test was spot on lol.

Think a blade can get to sharp and have no longevity to it i find the same if i sharpen my chisels to much they go dull quicker
I have a 100 pack of Milwaukee blades in my desk at work and I can't wait until I use them all up...the edges roll over and chip easier than any blades I've used before. I'll have to try some of the DeWalt carbide blades at some point.

So not even a minute in and I can already tell this is going to be a good comparison, the fact Project Farm has decided to use an actual sharpness tester instead of just newspaper really says how much effort he's put into the video straight away. All newspaper is good for testing is whether or not the edge is the right angle for cutting newspaper, once a blade gets used, that "perfect" edge starts getting lost and cutting paper doesn't give the information you actually want.

I love this. Great test designs. The only thing I'd like to ask for, if feasible, is to test a statistically significant sample of each blade model for the initial sharpness test; maybe ten pieces each. This would lend a lot more credibility to the results, because we'd understand how much variation there is from one blade to the next with the same model (at least within the same pack of blades). I do understand the cost and time impact of this request. I work as an automotive engineer for one of the big three, and making sure that the results we get our of our tests are meaningful is critical to our work. Again though, great test. Love it. I had to rewatch this one after I bought a Milwaukee utility knife and the blade it came with it cut up boxes much easier than the Stanley blades in a DeWalt knife I usually use. At home I mostly use them for boxes. At work it is a lot of plastic stretch wrap and banding. Not sure how hard that is on a blade, but the wrap is much easier with a fresh and sharp one. I'll probably get some of the MIlwaukee blades once I use up what I now have and see if I remain happy with them. I'm ok with changing blades more often in exchange for sheer effectiveness.
Thanks for sharing.

This is a great comparison. Very useful. What I've found is that there's also a great variety of durability among the utility knives themselves, not just the blades. I have one folding knife that's great for opening Amazon boxes, but almost loses the blade whenever it's stressed, while my DeWALT handle keeps a firm grip on the blade no matter the job and is much less tiring to use (though the form is less convenient to carry around in my pocket). A comparison of utility knives would be extremely useful - apologies if you've done one already, I just could not find it.

Yes. How about a few blades in the cylinder with the clear head on it.
Speaking of which, I have a bad story. When I was young I would ne mowing the yard. It would be toad season and there would be thousands of baby toads hoping around. I would pick one up and send it for a ride though the engine. I would remove the filler and stick them in the intake. Thanks so much for your great videos. You have become my go to before I purchase items. I love the way you come up with the creative testing methods.
I work with aluminum capping or trim coil and I have to change blades after a few cuts on either side I have been using the Milwaukee blades but I’ll be switching to Dewalt now.
Thank you for the feedback!
Can you update us on results?
@@Spanky00Cheeks the Dewalt blades last a lot longer and tend to be sharper in general you can just glide it to score it unlike other blades. Would recommend
I'd like to see a behind-the-scenes video to watch the process of designing and building your test jigs! Always impressed!
Thank you for the video idea!
I know. This dudes work ethic is through the roof
“In today’s episode, we find out which utility blade cuts through this lawnmower engine”
Lawnmowers : DAMNIT
"In today's episode, we find out how utility blades work as a lubricant in this small engine. Can you use utility blades instead of oil in a pinch if you're stranded in the woods? Let's find out!"
lol. I thought about it!
That is hilarious lol
I definitely laughed out loud.
😆
Stanley it is!! Again, thanks for your diligent testing!!!
You are welcome!
I tried Stanley blade in my MWK knife and it started coughing. Called store and they said it was CV-19. So, for giggles I tried MWK and coughing stopped. Go figure. 😂
@@joeboxter3635 c'mon man.. you expect me to believe that.. no effing way you got someone on the phone.. and i dont trust no automated systems after my last accident.. what a lier.. most likely your blade werent wearing face mask.
@@notmyrealname9504 Lol. But the Stanley blade was vaccinated. So I thought it didn't need to wear f/m.
I love your testing methodology. Thank you for making these videos. I have liked several and realized I had not subscribed yet. My apologies for not subscribing earlier.
Thanks! Thanks for watching and subscribing!
I'd like to see your take on a sharpening tool comparison.
Great suggestion! I'll do it
Yes!!
@@ProjectFarm As a knife guy, I'm looking forward to seeing an outsider's perspective :)
Spyderco Sharpmaker... (V-angle style, ceramic rods ) Easy, relatively safe... portable.. Comes with medium and fine grit, but has an ultra fine grit available, about $60...
Scott Crawford if he wants to test one of those I’ll send him mine. I’ve not got the patience for it. I went with a 1x30 and will never do it by hand again.
You should test gunk and gum removers like Goof off and the citrus based removers. thanks for the great content
Thank you for the video idea!
Goof off blue monster etc.
I use 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner.
Citrol. Game over
I'd love to see this. Because I've never had goof off work like expected
Great job! Not only were the tests practical, they were repeatable and measurable from blade to blade.
Thanks!
Great work man! Keep up the helpful reviews! 🙌🏼🙌🏼
I can't believe the work that is put into each and every video, its amazing. No clickbait, no forcing you to subscribe, like, turn notifications on, buy their merch, follow all their social medias. Just a good old UA-cam video.
Thank you very much!
YES ,AMEN !!!!! REALLY GOOD VIDEO !!
The dry wall test was the most needed for me as i hang it for a living
Thank you for the feedback
This is a level of rigour brought to testing that just makes me happy. Thorough. My compliments, sir!
Wow, thank you!
I appreciate you greatly for testing on copper because I'm a scrapper so that's my most common use for utility knives. I strip #1 wires all the time because it doubles or even triples the scrap value
binge watch 20 of these episodes while getting zooted
It’s absolutely amazing how much time he spends making videos not just editing but also creating the content itself. It’s also fascinating to me how he builds his own test equipment and these devices that re-create the same motions. GREAT WORK !!! I really enjoy your videos. I find myself watching your videos and then making a decision in purchasing something. Sometimes at the store before I buy some thing I look on your channel to see if you have done a video on it yet.
I appreciate that!
I'm on the same page now
Your videos and evaluations have affected my purchases of many different products. Love your videos!
These reviews have influenced my purchases also!!
It has taken buying stuff from just a crapshoot to knowing what you're getting!
So true! You can see his dedication to the craft.
Congrats for your awesome work on these tests. If you ever revisit this test, please consider including the fiskars blades. The brand has tested really well on your other comparisons and they claim 24x durability!
Thanks! Thanks for the suggestion.
Can I just say that we admire You sir. And we’re lucky to have You on UA-cam? Hell of a job! Hell of a channel!
Thanks so much!
New label: "PF Approved", the true of the things.
Thank you!!
What is PF APPROVED ????
@@ShelliLoop Project Farm Approved
Definitely make it easier to by the right thing first every time!!!
I've changed a few items or looked for ones I've seen tested. Makes a difference
I’m starting a running list of the top rated products for myself so I stop wasting money on crap
Thank you!
Post up the list on a Google doc!

at least they are honest; id buy them for that
theol31 only a ton?
@@ayrendraganas8686 I mean they have to be, its the law..Bet if it wasn't none of them would say it while still keeping the American flag on their packaging.
They stuff the blades into the blister pack in a warehouse in Detroit.
Only on Project Farm do we see staple being stapled with another set of staples! (9:04)
lol. Thank you!
Wow! So much work went into this! I just found a ton of Dewalt blades at work today! Looks like I scored, thanks for the great video
You are welcome!
I really enjoy these test videos, I can’t imagine how much time an work not to mention money that goes into all these test videos, thank you for these informative videos
Thank you!
Maybe as a followup video: what about the effects on sharpness when cutting plastic sheet (perspex, polycarbonate), window spline, window screen.
As part of my last job, I used to do IT procurement. One thing I noticed is that if buying utility blades through Amazon, a 5-10 pack of blades can cost the exact same as buying a 75-100 pack of the exact same blades.
Thirdly, your video reminded me of AvE's video "BOLTR: DEWALT Carbide | Knife Blades"
Thank you for the video idea!
Didn't need to watch this to know Stanley would be the winner. 10+ years of tile work proved it to me. Excellent video!
Thanks so much!
There's a reason that here in the UK they're just generically called Stanley Knifes.
.... But Stanley wasn't the winner
@@dalyclose7815 Was going to say the same thing. Dewalt was. Stanley was a good value blade though. And for cardboard specifically, Lennox seems to be the best.
Yeah Stanley didn't win but the standard are the best bang-for-the-buck, I use Stanley standard because they sell them everywhere and they're cheap. I haven't tried the FatMax carbide blades.
Commenting just to do what I can to reward you for taking the time to make this.
I appreciate that!
as usual an informative and useful video. I'm curious if you had a way to just have the tip of the blade (that was exposed to the brunt of the abuse) fixed when using the tester and if there was a method to keep where on the blade each blade was tested consistent?
